The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                                004:078

Aa-lum-ta-ra-aiy-lul-la-zee-na-qee-la-la-hoom-koof-foo-ai-day-ya-koom                              Wa-aqee-moos-sa-laa-ta-wa-aa-tooz-za-kaa-ta

Fa-lum-ma-ko-tay-ba-alai-hay-mool-qay-taa-lo                                                                        Ezaa-fa-ree-qoom-min-hoom-yukh-shao-nun-naa-sa                                                                  Ka-khush-ya-til-laa-hay-auo-aa-shud-da-khush-yah

Wa-qaa-loo-rub-ba-naa                                                                                                                        Lay-ma-ka-tub-ta-alai-nul-qay-taa-la                                                                                              Lao-laa-ukh-khur-ta-na-elaa-aa-ja-lin-qa-ree-b

Qool-ma-taa-ood-doon-ya-qa-lee-loon                                                                                          Wul-aa-khay-ra-to-khai-roon-lay-ma-nit-ta-qaa                                                                        Wa-laa-tooz-la-moo-na-fa-tee-laa

Why don’t you look at those to whom it was said, “Hold back your hands            And observe the prayer and pay the Zakaat.”

But surely when the fighting was prescribed for them                                                  A group among them fear people                                                                                      Like the fear of Allah or even a stronger fear.

And they said, “God of us all!                                                                                              Why did you dictate on us the fighting?                                                                          Why did you not delay it for a near term (= short time)?”

You say, “Delight of this life is short                                                                                 And the Hereafter is best for him who feared God                                                         And you will not be wronged even a bit.”

The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                        004:073

Wa-inna-min-koom-la-mun                                                                                                               La-yo-but-tay-un-na                                                                                                                              Fa-in-asaa-but-koom-mo-se-ba-toon-qaa-la                                                                                    Qud-un-aa-mul-laa-ho-aa-luy-ya                                                                                                        Iz-lum-a-koon-ma-aa-hoom-sha-he-daa

And most certainly among you is                                                                                          He who definitely stays behind.                                                                                          Then if a misfortune struck you, he said,                                                                      “Certainly Allah conferred blessings on me                                                                    When I was not present with them.”

Thus A Yusuf Ali’s translation ‘men who would tarry behind’ and others as ‘tarry behind,’ ‘lag behind,’ ‘linger behind from fighting in Allah’s cause)’ and ‘hang back’ in the plural is not correct)
