Soon you will find others. They seek that                                                                  They be at peace with you and at peace with them.                                                        Every time they returned to mischief, they fell deeper into it.

So if they do not leave you alone                                                                                        And offer you peace                                                                                                                      And hold back their hands from hurting you                                                                  Then you catch them and fight them wherever you found them

Il-lul-la-zee-na-ya-say-loo-na-elaa-qao-min                                                                                    Bai-na-koom-wa-bai-na-hoom-me-thaa-qoon                                                                                Auo-jaa-oo-koom-ha-say-rut-so-do-ro-hoom                                                                                  Un-yo-qaa-tay-loo-koom-auo-yo-qaa-tay-loo-qao-ma-hoom

Wa-lao-shaa-ul-laa-ho-la-sul-la-ta-hoom                                                                                    Alai-koom-fa-la-qaa-ta-loo-koom

Fa-aiy-nae-ta-za-loo-koom-fa-lum-yo-qaa-tay-loo-koom                                                          Wa-ul-qao-elai-ko-moos-sa-la-ma                                                                                                Fa-maa-ja-aa-lul-laa-ho-la-koom-alai-him-sa-be-laa

Except those who are linked with the people                                                          Between you and between them there is a Pledge                                                           Or they came to you with their hearts constrained                                                    That they fight you or they fight their own people

And if Allah chose He would have imposed them                                                          Over you and then they would have killed you

Wud-do-lao-tuk-fo-roo-na-ka-maa-ka-fa-roo                                                                            Fa-ta-koo-noo-na-sa-waa-oon                                                                                                            Fa-laa-tut-ta-kha-zoo-min-hoom-auo-lay-yaa-aa                                                                      Hut-taa-yo-haa-jay-roo-fee-sa-bee-lil-laa-hay

They love that you disbelieve like they had disbelieved                                          Thus you all will become exactly the same.                                                              But you do not take among them friends                                                                      Until they make a move in the cause of Allah

But if they turn back then you catch them                                                                     And you fight them wherever you found them                                                            And never take from them any as a friend nor as a helper

** Note 004:089. The word  سَبِيۡلًا  (sa-be-laa) is a noun. It has also been frequently used as an adjective or adverb. Its meanings include the following.

  1. Course; lines; path; road; way.
  2. Cause; excuse; means; measure; pretext.
  3. Direction; lifestyle; mission; religion; way of life.
  4. Action; alternative; relief; remedy; solution.
  5. Argument; justification; logic; rationale; reason.
  6. Means; measure; methodology.
  7. Authors have used the reference to the context of this word to add prefixes like appropriate, correct, good, linier, proper, right or straight right as well as bad, evil, improper or incorrect in translating it.

** Note 004:089a. The word  اَضَلَّ  (aa-dzul-la) is the past tense that means means lost or misled. The word يُّضۡلِ   (Yoodz-lay) is its present tense that means loses or misleads.

Only some translators recognized the difference between these two words. M M Pickthall translated the former as sent away and the later as sendeth astray. M Sher Ali, M Zafrullah Khan and M Ghulam Farid translated the former as caused to perish and the later as causes to perish.

But other authors just ignored the different meanings that each word really conveys.

A Yusuf Ali translated both the words the same in the past tense as ‘hath thrown out of the way’ — the first word correctly but the second word incorrectly.

M Muhammad Ali translated both the words similarly in the present tense as ‘leaves in error’ — the first word incorrectly but the second word correctly.

M Muhsin Khan and T D Al-Hilali translated both the words similarly in the past tense as ‘made to go astray’

N J Dawood translated both the words similarly in the past tense as ’caused to err’ and ‘led astray’ — the first word correctly but the second word incorrectly.

Sadly, such mistranslations by disregarding Arabic grammar are quite rampant in many translations on the market.

** Note 004:085. Rules generally start by negating a negative.  That is how the five words   لَا تُكَلَّفُ اِلَّا نَـفۡسَكَ‌  are structured in the Holy Qor-aan. They are best translated as stated above, i.e., You are not made responsible except for yourself

Authors who stated ‘Thou are held responsible only for thyself’ [aya] and ‘you are only accountable for yourself’ gave just the gist and not full translation of the five words by omitting to translate two words لَا and اِلَّا .

Paraphrasing only the essence of a text is one thing. But this site is committed to provide a simple and straightforward translation of the text of the Holy Qor-aan.
