وَاِذَا جَآءَهُمۡ اَمۡرٌ مِّنَ الۡاَمۡنِ اَوِ الۡخَـوۡفِ اَذَاعُوۡا بِهٖ‌ ۚ  وَلَوۡ رَدُّوۡهُ اِلَى الرَّسُوۡلِ وَاِلٰٓى اُولِى الۡاَمۡرِ مِنۡهُمۡ لَعَلِمَهُ الَّذِيۡنَ يَسۡتَنۡۢبِطُوۡنَهٗ مِنۡهُم ۡ‌ؕ وَلَوۡلَا فَضۡلُ اللّٰهِ عَلَيۡكُمۡ وَرَحۡمَتُهٗ لَاتَّبَعۡتُمُ الشَّيۡطٰنَ اِلَّا قَلِيۡلًا‏

 

Wa-ezaa-jaa-aa-hoom-um-roon                                                                                                      May-nul-um-nay-aa-wil-khao-fay-azaa-oo-ba-he

Wa-lao-rud-doo-ho-aiy-lur-ra-soo-lay                                                                                          Wa-elaa-olil-um-ray-min-hoom                                                                                                        La-aa-lay-ma-hool-la-ze-na-yus-tun-bay-too-na-hoo-min-hoom

Wa-lao-laa-fudz-lool-laa-ha-alai-koom-wa-rah-ma-ta-hoo                                                        La-ut-ba-aa-to-moosh-shai-taa-na-il-la-qa-lee-laa

 

And when came to them the Order                                                                                        Of peace or fear, they spread it all around

And if they had turned it over to the Messenger                                                              And to those among them with the Order                                                                     Surely those of them interpreting would have known it

And if Allah’s munificence and mercy were not on you                                                You certainly would have followed the Satan except a few

  • الۡاَمۡنِ — Um-nay — Peace (= n., Peace, prosperity and tranquility; safety; security. A/t/a, ‘touching (public) safety,’  ‘peace’ and ‘good’)
  • اَوِ — Aa-w(il) — Or (= Alternatively; in substitution)
  • الۡخَـوۡفِ — Khao-fay — Fear (= n., Any condition or state of being afraid or feeling sad or scared of any real, imagined or perceived danger or peril. A/t/a, ‘causing fear,’  ‘of fear’ and ‘bad’)
  • اَذَاعُوۡا — Azaa-oo — They spread (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. Fanning or spreading a gossip, misinformation or confirmed or unconfirmed hearsay. A/t/a, ‘spread it,’  ‘bruit it about,’  ‘divulge it,’  ‘noise it abroad,’  ‘at once make it known to all and sundry’ and ‘make it known (among the people)’
  • بِ — Bay — With (= Literally the word بِ  means with)
  • هٖ‌  — He — It (= pro., s., m; 3rd person., Refers to the aforesaid news)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above. A/t/a, ‘whereas’)

  • لَ — La…(ut) — Certainly (= Absolutely; assuredly. See  لَ  above) )

اَفَلَا يَتَدَبَّرُوۡنَ الۡقُرۡاٰن َ‌ؕ  وَلَوۡ كَانَ مِنۡ عِنۡدِ غَيۡرِاللّٰهِ  لَوَجَدُوۡا فِيۡهِ اخۡتِلَافًا كَثِيۡرًا

 

Aa-fa-laa-ya-ta-dub-ba-roo-nul-qor-aan                                                                                          Wa-lao-kaa-na-min-in-day-ghai-ril-laa-hay                                                                                La-wa-ja-doo-fee-hikh-tay-laa-fun-ka-thee-raa

 

Then why don’t they ponder over the Qor-aan?                                                                And if it was from anyone besides Allah                                                                              Surely they would have found in it a lot of conflict

 

  • اَ — Aa — Do (= Question mark like  Are, Can, Have, Shell or Will?)
  • فَ — Fa — Then (= After all this; at the end; finally; hence; in conclusion; resultantly; so; thereafter; therefore; thus)

وَيَقُوۡلُوۡنَ طَاعَةٌ   فَاِذَا بَرَزُوۡا مِنۡ عِنۡدِكَ بَيَّتَ طَآٮِٕفَةٌ مِّنۡهُمۡ غَيۡرَ الَّذِىۡ تَقُوۡلُ‌ ؕ  وَاللّٰهُ يَكۡتُبُ مَا يُبَيِّتُوۡنَ‌ ۚ  فَاَعۡرِضۡ عَنۡهُمۡ وَتَوَكَّلۡ عَلَى اللّٰهِ‌ ؕ  وَكَفٰى بِاللّٰهِ وَكِيۡلًا‏

 

Wa-ya-qoo-loo-na-taa-aa-toon                                                                                                          Fa-ezaa-ba-ra-zoo-min-in-day-ka                                                                                                      Buy-ya-ta-taa-aiy-fa-toon-min-hoom                                                                                                Ghai-rul-la-zee-ta-qoo-lo                                                                                                                    Wul-laa-ho-yuk-to-bo-maa-yo-buy-yay-too-na                                                                              Fa-au-ridz-un-hoom-wa-ta-wuk-kul-alul-laa-hay                                                                          Wa-ka-faa-bil-laa-ha-va-kee-laa

 

They say, “Obedience is our goal.”                                                                                        Then when they went out from your presence                                                                  A group from among them spent the night                                                                        Doing other than what you preach.                                                                               And Allah records how they spend night(s).                                                                     So, turn away from them and trust on Allah.                                                                   And Allah has always sufficed as a real Guardian.

A/t/a, ‘plan by the night,’  ‘spends the night scheming,’  ‘spend the night scheming,’  ‘spend the night in planning,’  ‘spends all night planning,’  ‘plot in secret’ and ‘meditate all night on’ but that translation as a verb in the present tense is contrary to what the Holy Qor-aan has stated in the past tense)
  • طَّآٮِٕفَةٌ — Taa-aiy-fa-toon — Group (= n., f gender. Assembly; band; bunch; crowd; faction;  gathering; group; mass; part; party; section; some of; throng. A/t/a, ‘a number’)

مَنۡ يُّطِعِ الرَّسُوۡلَ فَقَدۡ اَطَاعَ اللّٰهَ ‌ ۚ  وَمَنۡ تَوَلّٰى فَمَاۤ اَرۡسَلۡنٰكَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ حَفِيۡظًا  ؕ‏

 

Mun-yo-tay-ir-ra-soo-la-fa-qud-ataa-ul-laa-ha                                                                        Wa-mun-ta-wul-laa-fa                                                                                                                        Maa-ur-sul-naa-ka-alai-him-ha-fee-zaa

 

Whoever obeys the messenger has indeed obeyed Allah                                              And whoever turned around must then know that                                                        We have not sent you as a guardian on them

مَاۤ اَصَابَكَ مِنۡ حَسَنَةٍ فَمِنَ اللّٰهِ‌  وَمَاۤ اَصَابَكَ مِنۡ سَيِّئَةٍ فَمِنۡ نَّـفۡسِكَ‌ ؕ  وَاَرۡسَلۡنٰكَ لِلنَّاسِ رَسُوۡلًا‌ ؕ  وَكَفٰى بِاللّٰهِ شَهِيۡدًا‏

 

Maa-asaa-ba-ka-min-ha-sa-na-tin-fa-may-nul-laa-hay                                                          Wa-maa-asaa-ba-ka-min-suy-yay-aa-tin-fa-min-nuf-say-ka                                                Wa-ur-sul-naa-ka-lin-naa-say-ra-soo-laa                                                                                    Wa-ka-faa-bil-laa-hay-sha-hee-daa

 

Whatever good reached you was from Allah                                                              And whatever evil struck you was from your own self                                                And We have sent you to the people as a Messenger                                                      And Allah has sufficed as a witness

اَيۡنَ مَا تَكُوۡنُوۡا يُدۡرِكْكُّمُ الۡمَوۡتُ وَلَوۡ كُنۡتُمۡ فِىۡ بُرُوۡجٍ مُّشَيَّدَةٍ‌  ؕ  وَاِنۡ تُصِبۡهُمۡ حَسَنَةٌ يَّقُوۡلُوۡا هٰذِهٖ مِنۡ عِنۡدِ اللّٰهِ‌ ۚ  وَاِنۡ تُصِبۡهُمۡ سَيِّئَةٌ يَّقُوۡلُوۡا هٰذِهٖ مِنۡ عِنۡدِكَ‌  ؕ   قُلۡ كُلٌّ مِّنۡ عِنۡدِ اللّٰهِ‌ ؕ   فَمَالِ ھٰٓؤُلَۤاءِ الۡقَوۡمِ لَا يَكَادُوۡنَ يَفۡقَهُوۡنَ حَدِيۡثًا‏

 

Aina-maa-ta-koo-noo-yood-ray-ko-mool-mao-to                                                                      Wa-lao-koon-toom-fee-bo-roo-jim-mo-shuy-ya-dah

Wa-in-to-sib-hoom-ha-sa-na-toon-ya-qoo-loo-haa-zay-he-min-in-dil-laa-hay              Wa-in-to-sib-hoom-suy-yay-aa-ton-ya-qoo-loo-haa-zay-he-min-in-day-ka                          Qool-kool-loon-min-in-dil-laa-hay

Fa-maa-lay-haa-o-laa-il-qao-may                                                                                                Laa-ya-kaa-do-na-yuf-qa-hoo-na-ha-de-thaa

 

Whatever you have been, the death will reach you                                                      And even if you have been in strong fortresses

And if a goodness reaches them, they say, “This is from Allah.”                              And if a bad thing reaches them. they say, “This is from you.”                              Say, “All this is from Allah.”

So what is wrong with these people that                                                                    They don’t come close to understand a clear message

 

  • اَيۡنَمَا — Aina-maa — Whatever  **   (= This phrase is a combination of two words. The first word is  اَيۡنَ  (= aina) that has two meanings.  Firstly, in re a person it means what, whatever, whatsoever, who, whoever, whoso or whosoever.  Secondly, in re a place it means where, wither or whichever direction, origin or destination. The second word is مَاۤ  (= maa) and means what, whatever, whatsoever, when, any time or at such time. The combination اَيۡنَ مَا retains the meanings of its components and means what, whatever, whatsoever,  who, whoever, whoso, where or wherever. A/t/a, ‘Whosoever’ and ‘Wherever’ )
  • تَكُوۡنُوۡآ — Ta-koo-noo — You have been (= v., past., pl., 2nd person. You have been or grow to be. This verb shows the stated action has been happening or occurring since the past or present that will go on continuing into the future. A/t/a, ‘you are,’ ‘you may be,’ ‘ye are,’ ‘ye may be’ and ‘you be’)
  • يُدۡرِكْ — Yood-ray-ko — Will reach (= v., pres., m., 3rd person. Arrive; come; get to; land on. A/t/a, ‘will find .. out’ and ‘overtake’)
  • كُمُ — Ko-mo(ol) — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person., You. The Holy Qor-aan states that way when addressing both men and women jointly)
  • الۡمَوۡتُ — Mao-to — Death (= n., After life has ended; downfall; end of life on earth; extinction; stupor. Total desolateness, demolition, destruction or ruin)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet)
  • لَوۡ — Lao — If (= In case; under the circumstances; wish; would. A/t/a, ‘though’ and ‘even though’)
  • كُنۡتُمۡ — Koon-toom — You have been (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person. You have been since the past; were continuously + The Holy Qor-aan states this way when addressing both men and women jointly. A/t/a, ‘are,’ ‘be’ and ‘you put yourself’)
  • فِىۡ  — Fee — In (= Inside a duration, event, place, period, person, etc. Also, about; concerning, etc. See Note at 002:028)
  • بُرُوۡجٍ — Bo-roo-j..(im) — Fortresses (= n., pl. Castles. A/t/a, ‘towers’ and ‘fortresses’)
  • مُّشَيَّدَة — Mo-shuy-ya-dah — Strong (= Adj. Lofty; secure; superior; towering; high ceilinged.  A/t/a, ‘raised high,’ ‘strongly built,’ ‘built up strong and high,’ ‘lofty’ and ‘fortified’)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • اِنۡ — In — If (= In case; under the circumstances; when; when situation arises; whenever)
  • تُصِبۡ  To-sib — Reaches (= v., pres., f., 3rd person. Affects; afflicts; arrives; befalls;  comes; engulfs; falls on; gets to; gets hold of; hits; lands upon; is delivered; overcomes; overpowers; overtakes; reaches; smites; strikes; touches.   • عِنۡدِ — In-di(l) — From (= At; close at hand; from; in; in close proximity of; with. In the counting, esteem; estimate, eyes, front or near. Within the presence, precincts, seeing or sight of)

** Note 004:079. The phrase well-built castles that comes in the verse further on implies that the simple and straightforward translation of this section is whatever or whoever you may have been.

However, some authors have translated this section as whoever you are and wherever you have been.

 اَلَمۡ تَرَ اِلَى الَّذِيۡنَ قِيۡلَ لَهُمۡ كُفُّوۡۤا اَيۡدِيَكُمۡ وَاَقِيۡمُوا الصَّلٰوةَ وَاٰ تُوا الزَّكٰوةَ ۚ   فَلَمَّا كُتِبَ عَلَيۡهِمُ الۡقِتَالُ اِذَا فَرِيۡقٌ مِّنۡهُمۡ يَخۡشَوۡنَ النَّاسَ كَخَشۡيَةِ اللّٰهِ اَوۡ اَشَدَّ خَشۡيَةً‌ ۚ  وَقَالُوۡا رَبَّنَا لِمَ كَتَبۡتَ عَلَيۡنَا الۡقِتَالَ  ۚ  لَوۡلَاۤ اَخَّرۡتَنَاۤ اِلٰٓى اَجَلٍ قَرِيۡبٍ‌  ؕ  قُلۡ مَتَاعُ الدُّنۡيَا قَلِيۡلٌ‌ ۚ  وَالۡاٰخِرَةُ خَيۡرٌ لِّمَنِ اتَّقٰى  وَلَا تُظۡلَمُوۡنَ فَتِيۡلًا‏ 

 

Aa  laum  ta-ra  aiy-la  ul-la-ze-na  qee-la  la  hoom
Koof-foo  ai-day-ya  koom  wa
Aa-qee-mo  os-sa-laa-ta  wa  aa-tooz  za-kaa-ta

Fa  laum-maa  ko-tay-ba  aa-lai  hay-mo  ol-qay-taa-lo
Aiy-zaa  fa-re-qoon  min  hoom  yaukh-shao-na  un-naa-sa
Ka  khaush-ya-tay  il-laa-hay  auo  aa-shaud-da  khaush-yah

Wa  qaa-loo  raub-ba  naa
Lay  ma  ka-taub-ta  aa-lai  naa  ul-qay-taa-la
Lao  laa  aukh-khaur-ta  naa  aiy-laa  aa-ja-lin   qa-ree-b

Qool  ma-taa-o  od-doon-ya  qa-lee-loon
Wa  ul-aa-khay-ra-to  khai-roon  lay  ma-nay  it-ta-qaa
Wa  laa  tooz-la-moo-na  fa-tee-laa

 

Have you not looked at those for whom it was said,
“Hold back your hands and
Observe the prayer and pay the Zakat.”

Thereafter surely when the fighting was prescribed for them
A group among them fear people
Like the fear of Allah or even a stronger fear.

And they said, “God of us all!
For what reason you mandated on us the fighting?
Why did You not delay that for us for a short term?  

You say, “The fun of pleasures of life is short.
And the Hereafter is best for whoever feared God.
And you won’t be wronged a bit.”

اَلَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا يُقَاتِلُوۡنَ فِىۡ سَبِيۡلِ اللّٰهِ‌‌ ۚ  وَالَّذِيۡنَ كَفَرُوۡا يُقَاتِلُوۡنَ فِىۡ سَبِيۡلِ الطَّاغُوۡتِ فَقَاتِلُوۡۤا اَوۡلِيَآءَ الشَّيۡطٰنِ‌ ۚ اِنَّ كَيۡدَ الشَّيۡطٰنِ كَانَ ضَعِيۡفًا

 

Ul-la-zee-na-aa-ma-noo-yo-qaa-tay-loo-na-fee-sa-bee-lil-laa-hay                                          Wul-la-zee-na-ka-fa-roo-yo-qaa-tay-loo-na-fee-sa-bee-lit-taa-ghoo-tay                                Fa-qaa-tay-loo-auo-lay-yaa-ush-shai-taa-n                                                                                  In-na-kai-dush-shai-taa-nay-kaa-na-dza-ee-faa

 

Those who believed fight in the cause of Allah.                                                                And those who disbelieved fight in the cause of the Devil.                                          So you fight the friends of Satan.                                                                                          Surely the scheming of Satan has always been week.  

 

  • ٱلَّذِينَ — Ula-zee-na — Those who (= m., pl., Refers to ‘all those men’)

وَمَا لَـكُمۡ لَا تُقَاتِلُوۡنَ فِىۡ سَبِيۡلِ اللّٰهِ وَالۡمُسۡتَضۡعَفِيۡنَ مِنَ الرِّجَالِ وَالنِّسَآءِ وَالۡوِلۡدَانِ الَّذِيۡنَ يَقُوۡلُوۡنَ رَبَّنَاۤ اَخۡرِجۡنَا مِنۡ هٰذِهِ الۡـقَرۡيَةِ الظَّالِمِ اَهۡلُهَا‌ ۚ  وَاجۡعَلْ لَّـنَا مِنۡ لَّدُنۡكَ وَلِيًّا ۙۚ وَّاجۡعَلْ لَّـنَا مِنۡ لَّدُنۡكَ نَصِيۡرًا  ؕ‏  

 

Wa  maa  la  koom
Laa  to-qaa-tay-loo-na  fee-sa-bee-lay  il-aa-hay
Wa  ul-moos-taudz-aa-fe-na  may-na  ur-ray-jaa-lay
Wa  un-nay-saa-aiy  wa  ul-wil-daa-nay  il-la-ze-na  ya-qoo-loo-na
Raub-ba  naa  aukh-rij  naa  min
Haa-zay-hay  il-qaur-ya-tay  iz-zaa-lay-may  ah-lo  haa
Wa  uj-aul  naa  min  la  doon  ka  wa-lee-yaun
Wa  uj-aul-la  naa  min  la-doon  ka  na-see-raa

 

And what is with you (= reason you have)
That you don’t fight in the cause of Allah
And the weak seeking help from among men                                                                And women and children who say,                                                                                    “God of us all! please get us out of                                                                                          This town whose residents are oppressors,                                                                    And set up for us a Friend coming surely from You Alone.
And appoint for us a Helper coming surely from Only You.”

فَلۡيُقَاتِلۡ فِىۡ سَبِيۡلِ اللّٰهِ الَّذِيۡنَ يَشۡرُوۡنَ الۡحَيٰوةَ الدُّنۡيَا بِالۡاٰخِرَةِ‌  ؕ وَمَنۡ يُّقَاتِلۡ فِىۡ سَبِيۡلِ اللّٰهِ فَيُقۡتَلۡ اَوۡ يَغۡلِبۡ فَسَوۡفَ نُـؤۡتِيۡهِ اَجۡرًا عَظِيۡمًا 

 

Ful-yo-qaa-til-fee-sa-bee-lil-laa-hil-la-zee-na                                                                          Yush-roo-nul-ha-yaa-tud-doon-yaa-bil-aa-khay-ra-tay                                                            Wa-mun-yo-qaa-til-fee-sa-bee-lil-laa-hay                                                                                    Fa-yooq-tul-auo-yugh-lib                                                                                                                    Fa-sao-fa-noe-tee-hay-uj-run-azee-maa

 

So let him fight in the cause of Allah who                                                                      Sell the life of this world for that of the Hereafter                                                        And he who fights in the cause of Allah                                                                              And then is killed or conquers                                                                                          Then soon We will give him a great reward

  • فِىۡ  — Fee — In (= In; concerning; regarding; in reference; relative to. Also, amidst, during or inside a time, place or event)
  • سَبِيۡلِ — Sa-bee-l … (il) — Cause (= n., s., Action; alternative; cause, course; escape; line;  means; measure; method; path; pretext; remedy; road; way. See Note 004:089  & Phrase fee-sa-be-lil-laa-hay)
  • اللّٰهِ‌ — (i) Laa-hay..(il) — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)
  • ٱلَّذِينَ — (i) La-zee-na — Those who (= Reference is to ‘all those men, masculine gender. A/t/a,  ‘those (believers)’
  • يَشۡرُونَ — Yush-roo-na(ul) — Sell (= v., pres., m., 3rd person. Acquire; barter; exchange; get; purchase; sell; trade. A/t/a, ‘would sell’ and ‘would prefer’)
  • ٱلۡحَيَوٰةَ — Ha-yaa-ta(ud) — Life (= Time between one’s birth and death)
  • الدُّنۡيَا — Doon-yaa — This world (= n., Close at hand.  Life … on earth, of near, short term or of this world. The near one. The World at hand with its benefits, happiness or pleasures. The Hither, that is the opposite of Hereafter or Life after death. A/t/a, ‘present’ and ‘this world’)
  • بِ — B…(il) — With (= Literally the word بِ  means with. Also in exchange for. A/t/a, ‘for’)
  • الۡاٰخِرَةِ — Aa-khay-ra-tay — The Hereafter (= Life yet to come; next life; far, distant, other world. A/t/a, ‘the other’)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but;  also; more over; though; when; while; yet. A/t/a, ‘to’)
  • مَنۡ — Mun — Whoso (= What; which; who; whoever; whosoever)
  • يُّقَا تِلۡ — Yo-qaa-til — Fights (= v., pres., m., 3rd person. Acts in self-defense; attacks  fights back; resist; retaliate. A/t/a, ‘fighteth.’  See يُقَا تِلۡ  above.)
  • فِىۡ — Fee — In (= Concerning; during; for; in reference; regarding; relative to)
  • سَبِيۡلِ — Sa-bee-l…(il) — Cause (= n., Cause; line; path; road; way. Also, for the sake of.  See  سَبِيۡلِ   above)
  • اللّٰهِ‌ — (i) Laa-hay — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)
  • فَ — Fa — Then (= Consequently; resultantly; so; thus. A/t/a, ‘Whether.’  See فَ above)
  • يُقَـٰتِلۡ — Yooq-tul — Is killed (= v., pres., pass., s., 3rd person. Is martyred, slaughtered or slain in battle, combat or war.  Destroyed, ruined, murdered or massacred in a fighting back, oppression, persecution, push back, resistance, self-defense, strife, struggle or suppression.   • يَغۡلِبۡ — Yugh-lib — Conquers (= v., pres., s., 3rd person. Attains victory; conquers; overcomes; overpowers; prevails; wins;. A/t/a, he ‘gets victory’ and ‘be he victorious.’     A/t/a, ‘they … conquer’ which is a translation by N J Dawood in the plural of what the Holy Qor-aan has stated in the singular)
  • فَ — Fa — So (= Consequently; resultantly; so; thus. See  فَ  above)
  • سَوۡفَ — Sao-fa — Soon (= In the very near future)
  • نُؤۡتِي — Nou-tee — We will give (= v., pres., s., 1st person. Award; bless; bestow; bring; gift; grant. A/t/a, ‘shall We give him,’ ‘We shall … give,’ ‘we shall reward’ and ‘we shall bring’)
  • هِ — Hay —  Him (= Refers to him who fought and gave life or overcame. A/t/a, ‘them’ which is a translation by N J Dawood in the plural of what the Holy Qor-aan has stated in the singular)
  • أَجۡرًا — Uj-run — Reward (= n., s. Award; compensation; good result; prize; recognition; reward; success; trophy.
  • عَظِيۡمًا‏ — Azee-maa — Great (= Adj., Awesome; colossal; enormous; great; magnificent; mighty; rich; tremendous; valuable. A/t/a, ‘of great value,’ ‘vast’ and ‘richly.’ See also the Note to the verse 003:173)
