وَاَقۡسَمُوۡا بِاللّٰهِ جَهۡدَ اَيۡمَانِهِمۡ لَٮِٕنۡ جَآءَتۡهُمۡ اٰيَةٌ لَّيُؤۡمِنُنَّ بِهَا‌  ؕ  قُلۡ اِنَّمَا الۡاٰيٰتُ عِنۡدَ اللّٰهِ‌ وَمَا يُشۡعِرُكُمۙۡ اَنَّهَاۤ اِذَا جَآءَتۡ لَا يُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ‏

 

Wa-uq-sa-moo-bil-laa-hay-jauh-da-aiy-maa-nay-him                                                                La-in-jaa-ut-hoom-aa-ya-toon-la-yoe-may-noon-na-bay-haa                                                 Qool-inna-mul-aa-yaa-to-in-dul-laa-hay                                                                                          Wa-maa-yoosh-aiy-ro-koom                                                                                                              Unna-haa-ezaa-jaa-ut-laa-yoe-may-noon

 

And they swore by Allah their strongest of oaths, saying:                                      Most certainly they would believe in it if a Sign came.                                             Say, “Surely Signs come from Allah.                                                                               And what would make you realize for sure                                                                        That when that Sign came, they won’t believe.

  • جَهۡدَ — Jauh-da — Strongest (= Adj., The best, highest, earnest, strongest or tops. A/t/a, ‘most  earnest,’ ‘solemn’ and ‘solemnly’)
  • اَيۡمَانِ — Aiy-maa-nay — Oaths (= n., Affirmations; declarations; pledge; promise; vow;  statements of truth, trust and confidence. A/t/a, ‘Oaths’ and ‘oath’)
  • هِمۡ — Hoom — Their (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; theirs)
  • لَ  — La — Certainly (= Absolutely; assuredly; categorically; clearly, definitely;  doubtlessly; earnestly; indeed; positively; really; truly; seriously; sincerely; specifically; surely; verily)
  • اِنۡ — In — If (= In case; under the circumstances; when; whenever.  A/t/a, ‘that’)
  • جَآءَتۡ  — Jaa-ut — Came (= v., past., s., f., 3rd person. Arrived; came; had come; reached; returned. In a different context the word may mean achieved, brought, delivered, settled or succeeded. A/t/a, ‘came,’ ‘there came,’ ‘there come,’ ‘there comes,’ ‘should come,’ ‘come’ and ‘be given’)
  • هُمۡ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; theirs. A/t/a,  ‘unto them’ and ‘to them’)
  • اٰيَةٌ —  Aa-ya-toon — A sign (= n., s., An argument, corroboration, indication, pointer, insinuation, portent, proof, sign, suggestion, symbol or token. See Note 002:074. A/t/a, ‘a sign,’ ‘A (special) Sign,’ ‘a (particular) sign’ and ‘a portent’)
  • لَ — La — Certainly (= Surely. See  لَ  above.. A/t/a, ‘invariably’)
  • يُؤۡمِنُنَّ — Yoe-may-noon-na — Believe (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. Accept, admit, believe, have faith or recognize truthfulness. of the Holy Qor-aan and become Moslem. See Commentary Believe and Disbelieve. A/t/a, ‘they will believe,’ ‘they would believe’ and ‘they would … believe’)
  • بِ — Bay — With (= Literally the word بِ  means with. A/t/a, ‘by’ and ‘in.’ This word jointly with the next one have also been translated as ‘therein’)
  • هَا — Haa — It (= pro., s., f., 3rd person., Refers to aforesaid Sign)
  • قُلۡ — Qool — Say (= v., s, 2nd person. Admonish; announce, argue; assure; broadcast; call; convey; elaborate; explain; inform; instruct; maintain, persist; preach; proclaim; profess; propagate; state; teach, tell. See Notes 112:002 and Commentary ‘You say’ means.” A/t/a, ‘Say to them’ and ‘Say, (not to speak of a single sign)’
  • اِنَّمَا — In-na-maa — Most certainly (= Combination of two words. The first word اِنَّ (inna) means absolutely; definitely; doubtlessly; earnestly; indeed; positively; really; seriously; surely; truly; verily. The second word  مَاۤ  (maa) means all that, what; whatever. whatsoever. Thus  اِنَّمَا  (inna-maa) lays great emphasis on the statement that follows it as absolutely, positively and most certainly accurate’. A/t/a, ‘Surely’  and ‘indeed’)

The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                                    006:109

 

وَلَا تَسُبُّوا الَّذِيۡنَ يَدۡعُوۡنَ مِنۡ دُوۡنِ اللّٰهِ فَيَسُبُّوا اللّٰهَ عَدۡوًاۢ بِغَيۡرِ عِلۡمٍ ‌ؕ كَذٰلِكَ زَيَّنَّا لِكُلِّ اُمَّةٍ عَمَلَهُمۡ  ثُمَّ اِلٰى رَبِّهِمۡ مَّرۡجِعُهُمۡ فَيُنَبِّئُهُمۡ بِمَا كَانُوۡا يَعۡمَلُوۡنَ

 

Wa-laa-ta-soob-bool-la-zee-na-yud-oo-na-min-do-nil-laa-hay                                                  Fa-ya-soob-bool-laa-ha-aa-doo-wun-bay-ghai-ray-il-min                                                        Ka-zaa-lay-ka-zuy-yun-naa-lay-kool-lay-oom-ma-tin-aa-ma-la-hoom                                Thoom-ma-elaa-rub-bay-him-mur-jay-o-hoom                                                                          Fa-yo-nub-bay-o-hoom-bay-maa-kaa-noo-yau-ma-loo-n

 

And do not scorn those who call upon things other than Allah                                  Lest they then scorn Allah in enmity without knowledge.                                        This is how We have beautified for all people their work.                                          Then their return is to their Lord Provident                                                                    Then He will inform them of what they were practicing.

  • يَدۡعُونَ  — Yud-oo-na — They call (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. Address; appeal; beg; beseech; call on or upon; draw attention; invite; invoke;  plead; pray; request. A/t/a, ‘call upon’ and ‘they (disbelievers) worship’)
  • مِنۡ دُوۡنِ  — Min-do-n(il) — From other than (= Combination of two words. The first word مِنۡ (min) means among, from or out of the class or category of several articles, counts, kinds, things or person. The second word  دُوۡنِ  (do-nay) means besides, beyond,  except, excluding or save. Jointly the two words mean apart from, exclusive of, other than, instead of, in place of, in preference to, rather than, to the exclusion of. A/t/a,  ‘besides’ and ‘beside’)
  • اللّٰهِ — Laa-hay — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
  • فَ — Fa — Then (= After all this; at the end; consequently; finally; hence; in conclusion; so; thereafter; therefore; thus. A/t/a, ‘lest’ and ‘or’)
  • يَسُبُّوا — Ya-soob-boo(la) — They scorn (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. Abuses. See تَسُبُّوا  above. A/t/a, ‘they abuse,’ ‘they .. abuse,’ ‘They …  revile,’ ‘they should revile,’ ‘they should … revile,’ ‘they will insult’ and they insult’)
  • ٱللَّهَ — Laa-ha — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
  • عَدُوًّا — Aa-doo-won — In enmity (= Adv., With animosity, enmity, grudge or hostility. A/t/a, ‘out of spite,’ ‘exceeding the limits,’ ‘wrongfully,’ ‘in … revenge,’ ‘spitefully’ and transgressingly’)    

             The text in the next couple of words is repeated in 006;109 and 006:120                  

  • بِغَيۡرِ — Bay-ghai-ray — Without (= Separately the word  بِ  means with and غَيۡرِ means out of, other or else. The combination means without. A/t/a, ‘through’ and ‘lack of’)
  • عِلۡمٍ — Il-min — Knowledge (= n., Awareness; experience; expertise; familiarity with  facts; intellect; intelligence know-how; power of mind; solid information accumulated based upon wisdom; intelligence, perfect knowledge, total awareness and appropriate instruction. A/t/a, in ‘ignorance’ and as ‘ignorant’)
  • كَ — Ka — Like (= Identical; resembling; similar to the one stated earlier. Take the example or similitude of. A/t/a, ‘just as’)
  • ذٰلِكَ — Zaa-lay-ka — This is (= Here; refers to an aforesaid fact, person or statement. A/t/a, ‘Thus’)
  • زَيَّ — Zuy-yun — Beautified (= v., past., s., 3rd person. Made or turned to appear fair  seeming, attractive, beautiful, captivating, charming,  covetous, decorative, desirable, enchanting, enticing, look good, lucrative, luring, nice or tempting. A/t/a, ‘made alluring,’ ‘made fair-seeming,’ ‘have … caused to seem fair,’ ‘made … seem fair,’ ‘made their deeds fair-seeming to them so have We made to each people fair-seeming what they do’ and ‘have planned’)
  • نَآ — Naa — We (= pro., pl., 1st person. Our; Us. Used with God’s name this plural is the authoritative way a higher-up talks)
  • لِ — Lay — For (= For the object, person, purpose or reason of; intended for; meant for; on account of; concerning; regarding; relative to A/t/a, ‘unto’)
  • كُلِّ — Kool-lay — Every (= n., All; altogether; everyone; everything without any  exception; in every manner; total; very much; whole. A/t/a, ‘each’)
  • اُمَّةٍ —  Oom-ma-tin — People (= Community; group; large body; nation.  A/t/a, ‘all men’)
  • عَمَلَ — Aa-ma-la — Work (= n., s., Act; action; deed, doing; effort; hard work;  performance, practice, rendition; work. A/t/a, ‘doing’ and ‘conduct.’ Some authors have translated this singular word into a plural as ‘doings,’ ‘deeds’ and ‘actions’)
  • هُمۡ‌ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; theirs. A/t/a, ‘own’)
  • ثُمَّ — Thoom-ma — Then (= After that; further more; subsequently; thereafter. A/t/a, ‘Then’ and ‘In the end’ )
  • اِلَى — Elaa — To (= In the direction of; to; towards. A/t/a, ‘unto’)
  • رَبِّ — Rub-bay — Lord Provident (= The Almighty Allah who fills all needs of all His creatures. Cherisher. Creator. Guardian. Lord Provident. Master. The Only One Who provides all that sustains life. Ultimate Provider of air, water, food and whatever we and all other creatures need to live and subsist)
  • هِمۡ — Him — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; theirs)
  • مَّرۡجِعُ — Mur-jay-o — Return (= n., Come back; reversal. A/t/a, ‘will they Return,’ ‘shall they return’ and ‘shall return’)
  • هُمۡ‌ — Hoom — Their (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; theirs)
  • فَ — Fa — Then (= After all this; at the end; consequently; finally; hence; in conclusion; so; thereafter; therefore; thus)
  • يُنَبِّئُ — Yo-nub-bay-o — He will tell (= v., pres., s., 3rd person. Bring to notice; inform; make aware; spell out; tell. A/t/a, ‘He will inform,’ ‘He will declare to’ and ‘He shall … inform.’ But author A Yusuf Ali used 1st person in translating this word as ‘We shall … Tell … the truth’ although the Holy Qor-aan described this act of Almighty God with a word in the 3rd person)
  • هُمۡ‌ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; theirs)
  • بِ — Bay — With (= Literally the word بِ  means with. A/t/a, ‘Of’)

  • يَعۡمَلُون — Yau-ma-loon — They practicing (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. This word includes doing the same thing again and again continually. Also, act, do, execute, exercise, implement, operate, perform or work. See Note 002:075b.  A/t/a, ‘do,’ ‘doing’ and ‘they were doing,’ But ‘they did’ and ‘done’ in the past tense is not a good translation of the text of the Holy Qor-aan stated in the present tense)

وَلَوۡ شَآءَ اللّٰهُ مَاۤ اَشۡرَكُوۡا ‌ؕ وَمَا جَعَلۡنٰكَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ حَفِيۡظًا‌  ۚ وَمَاۤ اَنۡتَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ بِوَكِيۡلٍ

 

Wa-lao-shaa-ul-laa-ho-maa-ush-ra-koo                                                                                      Wa-maa-ja-ul-naa-ka-alai-him-ha-fe-zaa                                                                                      Wa-maa-un-ta-alai-him-bay-va-kee-l

 

And they would not have set up equals if Allah chose.                                                  And we have not made you a protector over them.                                                        And you are not with the Watch over them .

Worshiped deities or anyone other than Him Alone. See Note 003:187 and Note 004:037. A/t/a, ‘They would … have taken False gods,’ ‘they would … have associated partners with Him,’ ‘set up others (with Him),’ ‘they had … been idolaters,’ ‘they would … have set up partners with Him,’ ‘they would … have taken others besides Him in worship,’ ‘they would … have been polytheists’ and ‘worshipped idols’)

  • عَلَيۡ — Alai — Over (= Above; against; before; during; for; on; on top of; over. A/t/a, ‘for’)
  • هِمۡ — Him — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they. A/t/a, ‘their’)
  • بِ — Bay — With (= Literally the word  بِ  means with)
  • وَّكِيۡلٌ — Va-kee-l — Watch (= n., Controller; guardian; in-charge; responsible; watch. It is inappropriate to translate this attribute of God Almighty as a representative, speaker on other’s behalf or trustee. A/t/a, ‘guardian,’ ‘in-charge,’ ‘responsible,’ ‘to dispose of  their affairs,’ ‘disposer of their affairs,’ ‘disposer of affairs, guardian or trustee’ and  ‘trustee’)

اِتَّبِعۡ مَاۤ اُوۡحِىَ اِلَيۡكَ مِنۡ رَّبِّكَ‌‌ۚ  لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا هُوَ ‌ۚ  وَاَعۡرِضۡ عَنِ الۡمُشۡرِكِيۡنَ‏

 

It-ta-bae-maa-oo-hay-ya-elai-ka-min-rub-bay-ka                                                                        Laa-elaa-ha-il-laa-hoo-wa-au-ridz-aa-nil-moosh-ray-kee-n

           

Follow what is revealed to you from you Lord Provident.                                            There is no God except Him Alone and turn away from the idolaters.

 

  • اِتَّبِعۡ — It-ta-bae — Follow (= v., pres., 2nd person., Carry out; confirm; obey; observe; submit)
  • مَاۤ — Maa — All that (= What; whatever; whatsoever; at such time; when. A/t/a, ‘that which’)

This word is for a good thing being directed, disclosed, dispatched, given, inspired, intensified, kindled, revealed, roused or stirred up. A/t/a, ‘has been revealed.’ But ‘thou art taught By inspiration,’ ‘is revealed’ and ‘is inspired’ in the present tense are not the translation of what the Holy Qor-aan has described in the past tense)
  • اِلَيۡ — E-lai — To (= In the direction of; to; towards)

وَكَذٰلِكَ نُصَرِّفُ الۡاٰيٰتِ وَلِيَقُوۡلُوۡا دَرَسۡتَ وَلِنُبَيِّنَهٗ لِقَوۡمٍ يَّعۡلَمُوۡنَ

 

Wa-ka-zaa-lay-ka-no-sur-ray-fool-aa-yaa-tay                                                                          Wa-lay-ya-qoo-loo-da-rus-ta                                                                                                              Wa-lay-no-buy-yun-na-hoo-lay-qao-min-yau-la-moo-n

 

And like this We display the signs                                                                                        And for their saying, “You taught (yourself and others very) well,”                        And for Our explaining further for people knowing the basics.

قَدۡ جَآءَكُمۡ بَصَآٮِٕرُ مِنۡ رَّبِّكُمۡ ‌ۚ فَمَنۡ اَبۡصَرَ فَلِنَفۡسِهٖ‌ ۚ وَمَنۡ عَمِىَ فَعَلَيۡهَا‌  ؕ وَمَاۤ اَنَا عَلَيۡكُمۡ بِحَفِيۡظٍ

 

Qud-jaa-aa-koom-ba-saa-aiy-ro-min-rub-bay-koom                                                                    Fa-mun-ub-sa-ra-fa-lay-nuf-say-he                                                                                                  Wa-mun-aa-may-ya-fa-aa-lai-haa                                                                                                    Wa-maa-aa-na-aa-lai-koom-bay-ha-fee-z

 

Visions surely came to you from your God.                                                                    So, whoever saw them was for his own self.                                                                And whoever turned blind was to his detriment.                                                        And I am not a protector covering over you.

  • رَّبِّ — Rub-bay — Lord Provident (= The Almighty Allah who fills all needs of all His creatures. Cherisher. Creator. Guardian. Lord Provident. Master. The Only One Who provides all that sustains life. Ultimate Provider of air, water, food and whatever we and all other creatures need to live and subsist)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — Your (= pro., pl., 2nd person. You all men. See  كُمۡ  above)
  • فَ — Fa — So (= After all this; at the end; consequently; finally; hence; so; thereafter; therefore; thus. A/t/a, ‘then’ and ‘If’)
  • مَنۡ — Mun — Whoever (= Anyone; whomever; whoso. A/t/a, ‘He that’)

No eyes reach Him.                                                                                                                    And He does reach the eyes.                                                                                                  And He is the Most Subtle, Most Informed.

ذٰ لِكُمُ اللّٰهُ رَبُّكُمۡ ‌ۚ لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا هُوَ ‌ۚ خَالِقُ كُلِّ شَىۡءٍ فَاعۡبُدُوۡهُ ‌ۚ وَهُوَ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَىۡءٍ وَّكِيۡلٌ‏

 

Zaa-lay-ko-mool-laa-ho-rub-bo-koom                                                                                            Laa-elaa-ha-il-laa-hoo.                                                                                                                        Khaa-lay-qo-koo-lay-shai-in-fau-bo-doo-ho                                                                                Wa-ho-wa-all-kool-lay-shai-in-va-kee-l

 

This is your Allah, your Lord Provident.                                                                         No God except Him Alone.                                                                                                       He is the Creator of everything; so worship Him.                                                          And He is the Watch over everything.

 

  • ذٰلِكُمۡ — Zaa-lay-koom — This for you (= This word is a combination of three words. The first  ذٰ   (zaa) means here, this fact or person who is right here, this or that is how it is, etc. The second  لِ  (lay) means for, belonging to, or is meant for. The third  كُمۡ  (koom)  is [pro., pl., m., 2nd person] a pronoun for the plural, masculine in 2nd person means You. The combination means this or that is for you. Ba-de-oos-sa-maa-waa-tay-wul-ur-dzay                                                                                          Un-naa-ya-koo-no-la-hoo-wa-la-doon                                                                                              Wa-lum-ta-koon-la-hoo-saa-hay-ba-toon                                                                                        Wa-kha-la-qa-kool-la-shai-in                                                                                                              Wa-ho-wa-bay-kool-lay-sha-in-alee-m

 

The Originator of the heavens and earth!                                                                          How come there is a son for Him                                                                                          And there has never been a wife for Him?                                                                          And He has created everything.                                                                                            And He is the All-Knowing with everything.

  • كُلِّ — Kool-lay — Every (= n., All; altogether; everyone. See  كُلَّ  above. This and the next word have also been jointly translated as ‘everything’)
  • شَىۡءٍ — Shai-in — Thing (= n., s., Anything at all however little. See  شَىۡءٍ   above. A/t/a, ‘things’)
  • عَلِيۡمٌ‏– Alee-m — All-Knowing (= superlative form indicates the greatest, the highest, the  most, and highlights that none more than Him knows. See 001:001. Informed to the maximum. The One with total knowledge and nothing out of sight. Knows all. Most Knowledgeable. Well-Acquainted. Well-Aware. A/t/a, ‘knower,‘ ‘Aware’ and ‘All-knower.’  But some authors translated this noun inaccurately as a verb by saying ‘hath full knowledge,’ ‘has knowledge’ and ‘has perfect knowledge’)

The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                                006:101

 

وَجَعَلُوۡا لِلّٰهِ شُرَكَآءَ الۡجِنَّ وَخَلَقَهُمۡ‌ وَخَرَقُوۡا لَهٗ بَنِيۡنَ وَبَنٰتٍۢ بِغَيۡرِ عِلۡمٍ‌ؕ  سُبۡحٰنَهٗ وَتَعٰلٰى عَمَّا يَصِفُوۡنَ

 

Wa-jaa-aa-loo-lil-laa-hay-sho-ra-kaa-ul-jin-na-wa-kha-la-qa-hoom                                      Wa-kha-ra-qoo-la-hoo-ba-nee-na-wa-ba-naa-tin-bay-ghai-ril-il-min                                    Soob-haa-na-hoo-wa-ta-aa-la-um-maa-ya-say-foo-n

 

And they made the Jinn partners of Allah and He had created them.                      And they alleged for Him sons and daughters with no knowledge.                        He is Holy and way above relative to what they attribute to Him.

  • اللّٰهِ  — Laa-hay — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
  • شُرَكَآءَ — Sho-ra-kaa-aa — Partners (= n., pl. Associates; participants; peers; sharers. A/t/a, ‘partners of Allah,’ ‘partners in worship with Allah,’ ‘to be partners with,’ ‘as (His) associates,’ ‘as associates’ and ‘equals’)
  • الۡجِنَّ — Jin-na — The Jinn (= n., Djinn; Jin. Secret beings; hidden from being seen by naked eye; fiery-natured haughty individuals. A/t/a, ‘the Jinns’)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above. A/t/a, ‘though,’  ‘although,’ ‘whereas’ and ‘while’)
  • خَلَقَ — Kha-la-qaa — He created (= v., past., m., s., 3rd person. Brought into being; created from a scratch and out of nothing before; formed; gave forms and faces in due proportions; originated; produced; shaped. See 003:060.   • عِلۡمٍ– Il-min — Knowledge (= n., Awareness; experience; expertise; familiarity with   facts; intellect; intelligence; know-how; power of mind; accumulated information based upon wisdom; intelligence, perfect knowledge)
  • سُبۡحٰنَ — Soob-haa-na — Holy (= adj., Being holy. Beyond earthly sentimentality. Glorious. Holy. Praiseworthy. With no blemish. A/t/a, ‘Holy,’ ‘Praise and glory be,’ ‘Glory be to,’ ‘Glorified be,’ ‘Glorified’ and ‘Glory to’)
  • هٗ — Hoo — Him (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to the Almighty God, A/t/a, ‘is He’ and ‘for He is’)
  • وَ  —  Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • تَعٰلٰى — Ta-aa-la — Way above (= adj., Exalted; lofty. A/t/a, ‘highly exalted is He above,’ ‘High Exalted is He above,’ ‘exalted far above,’ ‘High exalted above (all), ‘exalted be He above,’ ‘far beyond and above,’ ‘exalted above’ and ‘above’)
  • عَمَّا– Um-maa — Relative to what (= This is a combination of two words. The first word عَنۡ (un) means about, concerning, regarding, relative to. The second word مَاۤ (maa) means all that or what. عَمَّا means about, concerning, regarding that or what. A/t/a, ‘what,’ ‘that which,’ ‘all the things,’ ‘that’ and ‘all that (evil)’
  • يَصِفُوۡنَ — Ya-say-foo-n — They attribute (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. Allege; assert; say; state. A/t/a,  ‘they attribute to Him,’ ‘they attribute to Him,’ ‘they ascribe (unto Him),’ ‘ascribe (to Him),’ ‘ascribe to Him’ and they ascribe,’  However, the noun in ‘their imputations’ is no translation of the verb that the Holy Qor-aan has used)
