Phrase Aa-lum-ta-ra-ail-lul …

Phrase Aa-lum-ta-ra … meaning Why not you look at ….

 اَلَمۡ تَرَ اِلَى

Aa-lum-ta-ra-aiy-la…(ul)                                                              Why don’t you look at

  • أَ — Aa — Why (= Question mark like are, can, have, shall, why or will?)
  • لَمۡ — Lum — Don’t (= Absolutely never; no, not at all)
  • تَرَ — Ta-ra — You look         (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. This word is a combination of         two words and means look, observe, ponder, see, view, watch or witness. See Note 002:244a)
  • اِلٰٓى –Aiy-la … (ul)  At (= In the direction of; to; towards. In some situations, this word can also mean for, till or until)

Note 002:244a. Various authors have translated the phrase اَلَمۡ تَرَ اِلَى differently from each other. Some authors stated it differently from their own translations in other verses. Examples of such difference are in several verses.

The segment  اَلَمۡ (= aa-lum = don’t)   is a combination of two words. The first word أ (= aa) is a question mark. The second word لَمۡ  (= lum) means no, not, not at all, never. Jointly the combination means can’t, don’t, hasn’t, haven’t, shan’t or won’t as in verses

The segment تَرَ  (= ta-ra = you see) is a combination of two words. The first word  تَ  (= ta) means ‘you’ which some authors just mimicking the Western renditions of other scriptures have translated as thou or thy. The second word رَ  (= ra = v., pres., pl., 2nd person) means find, look, observe, ponder, see, view, watch or witness. Some situations can justify translating this word as consider, evaluate, know, notice or realize. The simple straightforward translation of this verb includes all the readers and addressees of this verse.

Why don’t you look at …                                                                                                      002:244  “ those who came from their homes in thousands but feared death.                          002:247  “ those Israelites who asked for appointment of a king to lead them.            002:259  “ him who argued with Abraham about his God since Allah gave him a kingdom.  003:024  ” those given part of the Book called to the Book of Allah to decide among them. 004:045  “ those given a part of the Book but erred and wished you too lose the right road.  004:050  “ those who pretend to be pious but it is Allah who cleanses whom He wills.  004:052  “ those given a part of the Book but believe in evil things and evil persons.  004:061  “ those who pretend to believe in what’s entrusted to you and those before you.  004:078  “ those told to observe prayer, pay Zakaat and fight in the cause of Allah.

Partial of this Phrase appears as follows.

005:063  “ To

105:002  “ How

** Note 005:058: The word    تَّخِذُوۡٓا  has a kasra (  ِ ) under the letter khay ( خِ ). It is a verb in the present tense for a 2nd person, a command to do a specified act, and the effect that means ‘You’ take, adopt, bring in, catch, consider, construe, seize or treat the commanded act.

The other word  تَّخَذُوۡا  has a fataha (  َ ) upon the letter khay ( خَ ). It is a verb in the past tense for a 3rd person, describes disbelievers who had done the wrong and the cause that means They’ took, acted upon, adopted, committed or practiced the proscribed prohibition. It is this word that has been mistranslated by many authors. Only some authors translated it correctly.

Placement of a single vowel makes these two words different. One is in the present tense for 2nd person. The other is in the past tense for 3rd person. See Commentary Arabic Grammar 5 – Punctuations and vowels.

The mistranslation of the word  تَّخَذُوۡا  describes disbelievers’ ridicule of Moslem prayer. It should have been translated in the past tense as the feat accompli that resulted in the command to the believers. Translating it in the present tense is plainly wrong.

The mistranslation shows failure to distinguish the two words. One is the result or effect. The other is the reason or cause. Perhaps they look alike to an eye not well-versed in the Arabic language of which every root produces several dozens of words as its derivates. Each derivative is a different word and has different meanings.

The mistranslation is by several following authors, perhaps some by just duplication.

  • Maulawi Sher Ali and M Zafrulla Khan translated it as ‘Who make.’
  • M Muhammad Ali, Amatul Rahman Omar, Dr Zidan Ahmad, M Mohsin Khan and Taqi-uddin Al-Hilali translated it as ‘Who take.’

The mistranslation in the present tense shows failure to know (a) the Arabic grammar (see Arabic Grammar 2 – Basics to ArabicNote 002:031 and Grammar 6 – Material Mistakes), (b) the impact of vowels (see Arabic Grammar 5 – Punctuations and vowels) and (c) the distinction between two different words that mean differently and must be translated differently.

The Holy Qor-aan gives Rules of Universal Application. A failure to follow these rules results in inequities. This verse shows the appropriate sequence. The wrong done earlier must be stated in the past tense. The resulting Command of obedience follows in the present tense. This site strongly disavows wrong meanings implanted on the Holy Qor-aan.

Listen you all who have believed!                                                                                        If one of you gets out of his religion                                                                                Then Allah will soon come with a nation                                                                            That He loves them, and they love Him                                                                          Humbly gentle to the Believers                                                                                            Harshly stern to the Disbelievers                                                                                      They strive hard in the cause of Allah                                                                                  And do not fear any accuser’s accusation
