(*) The Addressees.

The addressees in this verse are the recipients of other directions which are similarly laid down in verses like 002:026,  002:083,  002:278,  085:012,  095:007, 098:008, etc.

(**) The Mandate.

Reproduced is Note 002:044.  The Holy Qor-aan has repeated this particular direction to the mankind very frequently.  It is stated in the 2nd person format that ‘you’ اَقِيۡمُوا الصَّلٰوةَ وَاٰتُوا الزَّكٰوةَ and in the 3rd person that ‘they’  اَقَامَ الصَّلٰوةَ وَاٰتَى الزَّکٰوةَ.  It means to Establish and observe regularly the Prayers and pay / bring about the Purification, Zakaat.  It is stated among others in the verses 002:044, 002:084, 002:111, 002:178, 002:278, 022:079, 073:021.  It is reiterated in essence among others in the verses 005:056, 009:011, 009:071, 019:056, 098:006.  Its significance is that man must express his love for God and fellow beings by these physical actions.  The direction underscores why the Arabic word for man is  اِنۡسَا ن  (In-saan) meaning one with two loves.

(***) The Reward.

Reproduced is Note 002:039c. The Almighty Allah has stated one of His Rules of Universal Application in the words لَا خَوۡفٌ عَلَيۡهِمۡ وَلَا هُمۡ يَحۡزَنُوۡن (They shall have no fear and will not grieve).  Anyone can label it as an assurance, consolation, guaranty, promise, reward or whatever name one chooses.  But in nutshell He has established His rule that He rewards the good deeds and has repeated it for several groups of people including the following.

  • Who get guidance from Allah and then follow it – 002:039
  • Who believe in Allah, Day of Judgment and do good deeds – 002:063, 005:070
  • Who focus all their attention to Allah and focus on doing the good deeds – 002:113
  • Who spend their wealth for Allah and do not follow it with taunting or injury – 002:263
  • Who spend their wealth night and day, secretly as well as openly – 002:275
  • Who believe, do good deeds, establish prayer and pay the purification – 002:278

See the significance of such repetitions in our Commentary Repetitions in the Holy Qor-aan have benefits.
