يٰۤـاَهۡلَ الۡكِتٰبِ قَدۡ جَآءَكُمۡ رَسُوۡلُـنَا يُبَيِّنُ لَـكُمۡ كَثِيۡرًا مِّمَّا كُنۡتُمۡ تُخۡفُوۡنَ مِنَ الۡكِتٰبِ وَيَعۡفُوۡا عَنۡ كَثِيۡرٍ ؕ  قَدۡ جَآءَكُمۡ مِّنَ اللّٰهِ نُوۡرٌ وَّكِتٰبٌ مُّبِيۡنٌ  ۙ‏

 

Yaa-auh-lul-kay-taa-bay                                                                                                                      Qud-jaa-aa-koom-ra-soo-lo-naa                                                                                                          Yo-buy-yay-no-la-koom-ka-thee-ru-mim-maa                                                                          Tookh-foo-na-may-nul-kay-taa-bay                                                                                                  Wa-yau-foo-un-ka-thee-r                                                                                                                  Qud-jaa-aa-koom-may-nul-laa-hay                                                                                                  Noo-roon-wa-kay-taa-boom-mo-bee-n

 

Listen! People of the Book,                                                                                                    Our Messengers surely came to you                                                                                    He explains to you a lot of what                                                                                            You conceal from the Book                                                                                                        And he by-passes from a lot.                                                                                                    From Allah surely came                                                                                                             The Light and a crystal-clear Book

            

  • يٰۤ — Yaa — Listen (= Be attentive; hearken; pay attention; O!)
  • اَهۡلَ — Ah-lul — People of (= Masters; Owners; possessors)
  • الۡكِتٰبِ — Kay-taa-bay — Book (= Scriptures; former books revealed to the Messengers. A/t/a, ‘Scripture (Jews and Christians’)           
  • قَدۡ — Qud — Surely (= Certainly; definitely; indeed; surely. See Note 004:049 and our Commentary titled the 2 Words of Emphasis used together Multiply Effect)
  • جَآءَ — Jaa-aa — Came (= v., past., s., 3rd person. Arrived; reached; returned. Also, in different contexts the word can mean achieved, brought, delivered, settled or succeeded. A/t/a, ‘There has come,’ ‘has come,’ ‘Now hath come’ and ‘now has come’)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person., You. A/t/a, ‘unto you’)
  • رَسُوۡلٌ — Ra-soo-lo — Messengers (= pl., Apostles; God’s messengers; prophets; sages; saint)
  • نَآ — Naa — Us (= pro., m & g., pl., 1st person. Our; We; Us. Also, used with God’s name it is the authoritative way a higher-up talks to a subordinate)
  • يُبَيِّنُ — Yo-buy-yay-no — Explains (= v., pres., s., m., 3rd person. Clarifies; clearly states.  elaborates; espouses; expounds; informs; makes things crystal clear, obvious, plain and known well; sets limits for permissible activity. A/t/a, ‘revealing,’ ‘making clear,’ ‘expounding,’ ‘who makes clear,’ ‘unfolds,’ ‘unfolds many teachings,’ ‘revealing,’ ‘to reveal’ and ‘explaining’)
  • لَ — La — For (= For the object, person, purpose or reason of; intended for; meant for; on account of; concerning; regarding; relative to. A/t/a, ‘to’)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person., You. See  كُمۡ   above)
  • كَثِيرً۬ا — Ka-thee-raa — A lot (= Adj., Abundant. Ample. Plump. Plentiful. Without stint      Also, the word refers to any multitude, overflowing, repeated or repetitious goodness.    A/t/a, ‘much’)
  • مِمَّا — Mim-maa — Out of what    (= Combination of two words. The first word  مِنۡ (min) means ‘among, from or out of the class, category, kind count or several persons or things.’ The second word  مَاۤ  (maa) means ‘all that, what, whatever, any time, when,  whenever.’ The combination of both words means ‘for what; out of what; concerning, regarding, relative to; thereby. A/t/a, ‘of what,’ ‘that,’ ‘of that’ and ‘that which’)
  • كُنۡتُمۡ — Koon-toom — You had been (= Since the past were and have been continuously. A/t/a, ‘ye used to’ and ‘you used to’)
  • تُخۡفُوۡنَ — Tookh-foo-na — You conceal (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Give secretly; hide. Keep private, under cover, secret or surreptitiously. A/t/a, ‘hide.’ But translations as ‘concealed,’ ‘had kept hidden,’ ‘have kept hidden’ and ‘have hidden’ in the past tense are no translations of the word that the Holy Qor-aan has stated in the present tense)
  • مِنَ — May-nul — From (= Among, from or out of the class or category of several. A/t/a, ‘in’ and ‘of’)
  • الۡكِتٰبِ — Kay-taa-bay — Book (= Scripture; former books revealed to the Messengers)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet)
  • يَعۡفُوۡا — Yau-foo — By-passes (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. Excuses; ignores; omits. A/t/a, ‘passing over,’ ‘passes over,’ ‘pass over (i.e. leaving out without explaining,’ ‘forgiving,’ ‘forgives … of your faults,’ ‘pardoning’ and ‘forgive’)
  • عَنۡ — Un — From (= About; concerning; regarding; relative to. A/t/a, ‘over’)
  • كَثِيۡرٍ — Ka-thee-r — A lot (= Adj., Abundant. Ample. Plump. Plentiful. See كَثِيرً۬ا above. A/t/a, ‘much (That is now unnecessary’)

Author A Yusuf Ali carved out the following words as a separate verse # 17 of this Soorah

  • قَدۡ — Qud — Surely (= Certainly; definitely; indeed; surely. See قَدۡ  above)
  • جَآءَ — Jaa-aa — Came (= v., past., s., 3rd person. Arrived; reached. See جَآءَ above)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person., You. See كُمۡ  above)
  • مِّنَ — May-na … (ul) — From (= Among, from or out of the class or category of several
  • اللّٰهِ — Laa-hay — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
  • نُوۡرٌ — Noo-roon — Light (= n., Beam; brightness; glow; luminosity; radiance. A/t/a,  ‘a (new) light,’ ‘Light’ and ‘light (Prophet Muhammad s.a.w)’
  • وَّ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • كِتٰبٌ — Kay-taa-boon — Book (= Scripture; former books revealed to the Messengers. A/t/a, ‘Book (- the Qur’an’ and ‘Book (this Qur’an)’
  • مُّبِيۡنٌ — Mo-bee-n — Crystal clear (= adj., Conspicuous. Crystal-clear. Elaborate. Evident. Fully expressed. Manifest. Obvious. Open. Proven. Straightforward. Unmistakable. Visible with no blemish, doubt, hindrance or obstruction to fog one’s view because of having been explained elaborately. Well-explained. A/t/a, ‘clear,’ ‘perspicuous,’ ‘plain,’ ‘manifest’ and ‘glorious’)
