The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                                     007:011

 

وَلَقَدۡ مَكَّـنّٰكُمۡ فِى الۡاَرۡضِ وَجَعَلۡنَا لَـكُمۡ فِيۡهَا مَعَايِشَ ؕ قَلِيۡلًا مَّا تَشۡكُرُوۡنَ

 

Wa  la  qaud  mauk-kaun  naa   koom  fee  il-ur-dzay                                                                    Wa  ja-ul  naa  la  koom  fee  haa  ma-aa-yay-sha                                                                      Qa-le-lun  maa  taush-ko-roo-n

 

And We most certainly had established you in Earth                                                    And set up for you in it means to live.                                                                                Yet little is that you thank.

 

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet)
  • لَ — La — Certainly (= Absolutely; clearly, definitely; doubtlessly; earnestly; indeed; positively; really; surely; verily)
  • قَدۡ — Qaud — Surely (= This word lays emphasis like very definitely; surely. See Commentary ‘2 Words of Emphasis used together Multiply Effect.’ A/t/a, ’certainly,’ ‘it is We,’ ‘indeed’ and ‘surely’)
  • مَكَّـنّٰ — Muk-kun-naa — Established (= v., past., pl., 1st person. Dug deep; firmed up; given a firm holding; located; punched; set; strengthened. A/t/a, ‘have placed … with authority,’ ‘did … establish,’ ‘have … established … (giving you power therein),’ ‘have established … entrusted … with power,’ ‘given … power’ and ‘gave … authority’)
  • نَآ — Naa — We (= pro., pl., 1st person. Our; Us. Used with God’s name this plural is the authoritative way a higher-up talks)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., 2nd person. You. A/t/a, ‘(People!) … you’ and ‘you (mankind)’
  • فِىۡ — Fee … (il) — In (= Among. Inside a person or place. A/t/a, ‘on.’ See Note 002:028)
  • الۡاَرۡضِ — Ul-ur-dzay — The Earth (= n., Planet Earth which is a part of the solar system)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ   above)
  • جَعَلۡ — Ja-ul — Set up (= v., past., pl., 1st person. Appointed; brought into being; caused. Did. Made A/t/a, ‘made,’ ‘provided’ and ‘appointed’)
  • نَآ — Naa —  We (= pro., pl., 1st person. Our; Us. . See  نَآ  above)
  • لَ — La — For (= Because of; concerning; due to; for the object, purpose  or reason of; intended for; on account of; regarding; relative to. A/t/a, belonging to; to; towards)
  • كُمۡ —  Koom — You (= pro., pl., 2nd person. You all men. See  كُمۡ  above)
  • فِىۡ — Fee — In (= Among. Inside a person or place. See  فِىۡ  above. A/t/a, ‘with’)
  • هَا — Haa — It (= pro., s., f., 3rd person., Refers to the Earth. A/t/a, for this and the prior word jointly ‘therein’)
  • مَعَايِشَ — Ma-aa-yay-sha — Means to live (= n, pl., Means and sources to earn livelihood, subsisting and sustenance. A/t/a, ‘means for the fulfilment of your life,’ ‘means of livelihood,’ ‘means of subsistence,’ ‘provisions (for your life),’ ‘(various) means of subsistence.’ But the singular as in ‘a livelihood’ and ‘sustenance’ is inaccurate translation of the plural that the Holy Qur-aan has used)
  • قَلِيۡلًا — Qa-lee-lun — Little (= Adj., A bit; a few; little in quality or quantity; paltry in  price or value; short while in time; small or tiny in number; comparatively insignificant; less, miserably; low; meager; trifling. See 002:175. A/t/a,  ‘Small.’ ‘But little,’ ’how little,’ ‘seldom’ and ‘but you are seldom’)
  • مَّا — Maa — That (= What; whatever; whatsoever. For this and other meanings … See 004:067)
  • تَشۡكُرُوۡنَ — Taush-ko-roo-n — You thank (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Acknowledge with asserted, repeated, insistent and tremendous feelings of being grateful. Appreciate. Express gratitude. Render thanks. Give recognition. See 002:186. A/t/a, ‘the thanks that ye give,’ ‘thanks do you give,’ ‘you give thanks,’ ‘thanks you give,’ ‘you are thankful’ and ‘you are … grateful.’ But translation ‘ye thanks’ is incorrect because English grammar requires using the word thank and not thanks with the subject in second person.
