The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                  105:001 to 006

Verses of the Holy Qor-aan are quoted on this site with a 6-digit number; the first three digits tell of Soorah (Chapter) and the last three tell of verse. Numbering includes بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ‏‏ as verse #1 in every Soorah except Soorah #9. The phonetic transliteration in English is based upon words commonly pronounced like bat, cat, sat → fate, gate, hate → bait, trait → bay, nay, say → be, he, she → pet, pet, wet → bit, fit, sit → cot, dot, rot → boot, hoot, root → bout, rout → but, cut, hut, rut. An Arabic word with the vowel Fatah is best shown with a ‘u’ as in cut, rut, hut, but letter ‘a’ is often placed before ‘u’ to make it doubly sure that it is read as in cause, pause and clause and not with the sound of  ‘oo’ as in hoot, root, shoot or put. All Arabic words are translated in American English and are followed by alternates which other  translators have used.

Chapter # 105                                        Soora-tool-Feel                        سُوۡرَةُ الفِیل                  ‏‏

بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡم

اَلَمۡ تَرَ كَيۡفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِاَصۡحٰبِ الۡفِيۡلِؕ‏ ○  اَلَمۡ يَجۡعَلۡ كَيۡدَهُمۡ فِىۡ تَضۡلِيۡلٍۙ‏ ○  وَّاَرۡسَلَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ طَيۡرًا اَبَابِيۡلَۙ‏ ○  تَرۡمِيۡهِمۡ بِحِجَارَةٍ مِّنۡ سِجِّيۡلٍۙ‏○ فَجَعَلَهُمۡ كَعَصۡفٍ مَّاۡكُوۡلٍ

1. Bay  iss-may  il-laa-hay  ir-rah-maa-nay  ir-ra-heem
2. Aa  laum  ta-ra  kai-fa  fa-aa-la  raub-bo  ka  bay  aus-haa-bay  il-feel

2. Have you not looked at what your God did with the owners of elephants?
3. Did He not make their scheme turned into a total disaster?
4. And sent upon them flying birds, tiny aa-baa-bee-l
5. Striking them with stones made from baked clay
6. Thus He made them like the eaten fodder.

The Holy Qor-aan                                          105:001                                      ○بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ‏‏

Bay  iss-may  il-laa-hay  ir-rah-maa-nay  ir-ra-hee-m

With the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful I begin

(Beginning, commencing, starting)

• بِ — Bay … (is) — With (= The best translation of the word  بِ  is ‘with’ but some contexts may warrant its translation as ‘in’)
• سۡمِ — Iss-may … (il) — The name of (= The way to be addressed or called)
• اللهِ — Laa-hay … (ir) — Allah (= The Almighty God; the One Only worthy of worship)
• الرَّحۡمٰنِ — Rah-maa-n … (ir) — The Most Beneficent (= adj., Compassionate. Gracious. None more than Him benefits. As n: The One Who fully, totally and wholly benefits all, to the maximum without any condition, limitation or restriction. The Greatest and Highest Benefactor Who wills goodness and mercy to all His creation See Note 001:001)
• الرَّحِيۡمِ — Ra-hee-m — The Most Merciful (= adj., Superlative form indicates the Greatest Merciful. Merciful Forever. The word floodlights that none more than Him shows kindness and mercy, again and again, continually, incessantly, like perpetually coming waves from oceans)

The Holy Qor-aan                                        105:002                           أَلَمۡ تَرَ كَيۡفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِأَصۡحَـٰبِ ٱلۡفِيلِ

Aa  laum  ta-ra  kai-fa  fa-aa-la  raub-bo  ka  bay  aus-haa-bay  il-feel

Have you not looked at what your God did with the owners of elephants?

• اَ — Aa — Have (= Word asking a question like are, can, could, do, did, have, had, shell, should, will, would, what, etc.)
• لَمۡ — Laum — Not (= Absolutely never; no, not at all; nothing)
•  تَرَ — Ta-ra — You looked (= v., past., pl., 2^nd person. Discovered; found; looked; observed; pondered; seen; searched; viewed; watched; witnessed. See Note 002:244a. A/t/a ‘bethink ye’)
• كَيۡفَ — Kai-fa — What (= How or what about. How could, would or should it be, do, fare or look. In what fashion, manner, method or way)
• فَعَلَ — Fa-aa-la — He did (= v., past., s., 3^rd person. Acted; committed; dealt; did; fared; performed; reacted; returned; proceeded; treated)
• رَبُّ — Rub-bo — GOD / LORD (= The Almighty Allah who fills needs of all creatures; Cherisher; Creator; Guardian; Lord Provident; Master; The Only One Who provides all that sustains life. The Ultimate Provider of air, water, food and whatever we and all other creatures need to live and subsist)
• كَ — Ka — You (= pro., s., m., 2^nd person. You single male. The addressee of this divine message is initially the Holy Prophet, s.a.w., and secondarily every Moslem, in fact every human being. See Note 002:005)
• بِ — Bay — With (= The best translation of  بِ  is with. See  بِ  above)
• أَصۡحَـٰبِ — Aus-haa-bay … (il) — Owners (= pl, Army; controllers; masters; people; possessors. For other meanings of this word, see 002:083)
• ٱلۡفِيلِ — Feel — Elephants (= n., Huge animal with thick skin and big-wide four feet used by the medieval armies to trample over enemy soldiers without much fear of getting hurt by their arms)

** Note 105:002a.  A simple straight forward translation of this verse includes all readers of the HolyQor-aan as its addressees.

History is that an army of riding elephants commanded by Abraha raided Kauba. He was the viceroy of Yemen under the Abyssinian King Negus who had amassed the elephants as an undefeatable instrument of war.

Correctly stated by Dr Khan was the fact that “The Elephant Army which came from Yemen under the command of Abrahah Al-Ashram [was] intending to destroy the Kau-bah in the town of Makkah.”

Incorrectly narrowed are the meanings of this Soorah by some authors who:-                       1. Translated the pronoun  كَ  as ‘O Mohammad’ and limited this verse to only one man.     2. Narrowed the scope of this verse to just the narration of only one event in history.           3. Ended the universal application of this verse by confining it only one past time.               4. Treated this verse as an abrogated verse and so a part of the nearly 16% of the Holy Qor-aan that has become non-practicable.

No part of the Holy Qor-aan has become nonpractical and abrogated. Ahmadi Moslems correctly profess that no part of the Holy Qor-aan has become nonpractical and abrogated. Punjab High Court judicially held that Ahmedis believe that no part of the Holy Qor-aan has become nonpractical and abrogated. At this Site we maintain that  (Note 106:003 and our Commentary Abrogation Theory) no part of the Holy Qor-aan has become nonpractical and abrogated . Not a word, clause, verse, message or teachings of the Holy Qor-aan has by now or will ever become obsolete. Any translation, implication, assertion or conclusion to the contrary is unwarranted.

The Holy Qor-aan                                         105:003                                       أَلَمۡ يَجۡعَلۡ كَيۡدَهُمۡ فِى تَضۡلِيلٍ۬

Aa  laum  yauj-aul  kai-da  hoom  fee  taudz-lee-l

Did He not make their scheme turned into a total disaster?

• أ — Aa — Do (= Word asking a question like are, can, could, do, did, have, had, shell, should, will, would, what, etc.)
• لَمۡ — Laum — Not (= Absolutely never; no, not at all; nothing)
• يَجۡعَلۡ — Yauj-aul — He makes (= v., pres., s., 3^rd person. Appoints; brings out; causes;  converts; creates; directs, grants; makes out; places; renders; sets up; turns up; wills. See Note 002:031)
• كَيۡدَ — Kai-da — Scheming (= n., Design or planning mixed with acrimony, hatred and treachery. See Note 003:121)
• ھُمۡ‌ — Hoom –Them (= pro., pl., m., 3^rd person. Ref is to the army that had elephants)
• فِىۡ — Fee — In (= Contained inside a duration, event, time, place, period, person. Inside. Within. See Note 002:028)
•  تَضۡلِيلٍ۬ — Taudz-lee-l — Total loss (= n., Annihilation; bewilderment; cataclysm; confusion; disaster; destruction; gone astray; loss; miscarriage; nothingness; ruin. Total, utter and wholesome failure)

** Note 105:003. The basic root ج ع  ل includes the meaning of actively taking steps to make a change. The change can be for the better results or worse consequences, just as the doer may have intended.

The derivative  يَجۡعَلۡ   used in verse 105:003 is its present-participle. The context shows asking the addressee about God Almighty’s rule of universal application. He eventually downs and defeats the terribly rude and crude ruffians.

The derivative  جَعَلَ  used in verse 105:006 is its past tense. The context is to inform the addressee about God Almighty’s implementation of aforesaid rule. He destroyed the powerful army. He frustrated their design to demolish Kaubah so that people stop pilgrimaging there.

The Holy Qor-aan                                        105:004                                        وَأَرۡسَلَ عَلَيۡہِمۡ طَيۡرًا أَبَابِيلَ

Wa  aur-sa-la  aa-lai  him  tai-raun  aa-baa-bee-l

And sent upon them flying tiny aa-baa-bee-l

• وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., Links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
• أَرۡسَلَ  — Aur-sa-la — Sent (= v., past., s., 3^rd person. Cast; dispatched; flung; hurled; threw. A/t/a, throwing something at someone to strike)
• عَلَيۡ — Alai — On (= Above; against; for; on; on top of; over; upon)
• هِمۡ — Him — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3^rd person. Ref is to the army that had elephants)
• طَيۡرًاۢ — Tai-raun — Flying (= adj., Fliers. Flying birds (unlike chicken, turkey or ostrich). Flying creatures. Living birds. Soaring beings. Those flying, floating and sailing in air with wings spread out)
• أَبَابِيلَ — Aa-baa-beel — Tiny birds (= Flocks, swarms or large number of small birds. See Note 105:004 below)

** Note 105:004.  Sparrow-like tiny black bird named Ababeel. They fly fast, in swarms and in ever-changing odd loops. It is almost impossible for even a quality marksman soldier on the ground to hit one with an arrow, leave anyone strike them all down. They resemble modern day drones, sent by regional states like Iran and Ukraine, computer-controlled and in swarms that confuse air-defense systems of nations like USA, USSR or Israel with known air superiority)

The Holy Qor-aan                                         105:005                                       تَرۡمِيهِم بِحِجَارَةٍ۬ مِّن سِجِّيلٍ۬

Taur-me  him  bay  hay-jaa-ra-tin  m-min  sij-jee-l 

Striking them with stones made from baked clay

• تَرۡمِي — Taur-mee — Striking (= v., pres., s., 3^rd person. Hitting; pelting; throwing at. A/t/a, ‘which tore off flesh from their bodies to eat it by striking them against stones of hardened and petrified  clay’)
• هِمۡ — Him — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3^rd person. Ref is to the army that had elephants)
• بِ — Bay — With (= The best translation of  بِ  is with. See  بِ above)
• حِجَارَةٍ۬ — Hay-jaa-ra-tin … (m) — Stones (= Lumps of clay; pebbles; rocks; dried up clay)
• مِّنَ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of the class or category of several articles, counts, kinds, things, persons or phenomenon)
• سِجِّيلٍ۬ — Sij-jeel — Baked Clay (= n., Baked, dried up or hardened clay pebbles that when dropped from the bird-flying heights hit those on the ground like pellets shot from a 12-guage gun. Small rolled-n-dried balls of wet dirt are used in sling-shots to hunt down birds for food in many Indo-Pak areas. A/t/a Branded, decreed or marked stones)

The Holy Qor-aan                                           105:006                                         فَجَعَلَهُمۡ كَعَصۡفٍ۬ مَّأۡڪُولِۭ

Fa  ja-aa-la  hoom  ka  aus-fin  m-mau-kool 

Thus He made them like the eaten fodder.

• عَصۡفٍ۬ — Aus-fin … (m) — Fodder (= n., Cattle feed. Crops. Greens. Straw. A/t/a, ‘chaff’  and ‘empty field and stalks from which cattle has already eaten the corn’)
• مَّأۡڪُولِۭ — Mau-kool — Eaten (= adj., Devoured, discarded, half-eaten and trampled left-overs. A/t/a, ‘rotten’)
