The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                     111:001 to 006

Verses of the Holy Qor-aan are quoted on this site with the numbers, the first set of three being the number of Soorah (Chapter) followed by the last set of three being the number of the verse. The numbers include بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ‏‏ as the verse #1 in every Soorah except the Soorah #9. The original Arabic word is shown first, or in Col #1. The phonetic transliteration in English is shown next, or in Col #2, and is based upon words commonly pronounced like bat, cat, sat → fate, gate, hate → bait, trait → bay, nay, say → be, he, she → bet, pet, wet → bit, fit, sit → cot, dot, rot → boot, hoot, root → bout, rout → but, cut, hut, ultimatum. The English equivalent to the Arabic words (shown first, or in Col #1) are provided next, or in Col #3. Some other alternates in English used in other translations are given last, or in Col #4.

Chapter # 111                              Soora-Lahb / Al-Masad                   سُوۡرَةُ لهب / المَسَد

بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ

تَبَّتۡ يَدَاۤ اَبِىۡ لَهَبٍ وَّتَبَّؕ‏ ○ مَاۤ اَغۡنٰى عَنۡهُ مَالُهٗ وَمَا كَسَبَؕ‏ ○ سَيَصۡلٰى نَارًا ذَاتَ لَهَبٍ ۖۚ‏   وَّامۡرَاَ تُهٗ ؕ حَمَّالَةَ الۡحَطَبِ‌ۚ‏

فِىۡ جِيۡدِهَا حَبۡلٌ مِّنۡ مَّسَدٍ‏ 

  1. Bis-mil-laa-hir-rah-maa-nir-ra-heem
  2. Tub-but-ya-daa-abee-la-ha-bin-wa-tub
  3. Maa-ugh-naa-un-ho-maa-lo-hoo-wa-maa-ka-sub
  4. Sa-yus-laa-naa-run-zaa-ta-la-hub
  5. Wa-um-rau-to-hoo-hum-maa-la-tul-ha-tub
  6. Fee-jee-day-haa-hub-loom-mim-ma-sud

  1. With the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful I begin
  2. Destroyed* are both hands of the father of flames** (= Abee Lahb) and he is ruined
  3. Neither all he owns nor what he earned will avail him ***
  4. Soon he will burn in a fire with flames
  5. And his wife is the carrier of fuel
  6. In (= there is and will be around) her neck a twisted rope made from palm-fiber

The Holy Qor-aan                                         111:001                                           ○بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ‏‏

Bis-mil-laa-hir-rah-maa-nir-ra-heem

With the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful I begin.

  • بِ — B…(is) — With (= This Arabic word literally means ‘with’. Its translation in English is more accurate with ‘with’ than with ‘in’)
  • سۡمِ — Ism…(il) — The name of (= The way to be addressed or called)
  • اللهِ — Laa-h…(ir) — Allah (= The Almighty God; the One Only worthy of worship)
  • الرَّحۡمٰنِ — Rah-maa-n(ir) — The Most Beneficent (= The One who fully, totally and wholly benefits all, to the maximum, with no condition, limitation or restriction. Compassionate. Gracious)
  • الرَّحِيۡمِ — Ra-heem — The Most Merciful (= The One who fully, totally and wholly showers mercy, to the maximum, again and again, continually, indefinitely and perpetually like the endlessly incoming waves from the oceans)

Holy Qor-aan                                                 111:002                                            تَبَّتۡ يَدَآ أَبِى لَهَبٍ۬ وَتَبَّ

                 Tub-but-ya-daa-abee-la-ha-bin-wa-tub

                Destroyed are both hands of the father of flames (= Abee Lahb) and he is ruined

  • تَبَّتۡ — Tub-but — Destroyed (= Perished; ruined. a/t/a “May .. he perish”) **
  • يَدَآ — Ya-daa — Both hands (= Supporters on both sides of a man; two big supporters; all powers; full power)
  • أَبِى — Abee — Father (= Master; owner; person with power over) *
  • لَهَبٍ — La-ha-bin — Flames (= Of fiery anger; points to all haughty enemies)
  • وَ —  Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • تَبَّ — Tub — Ruined (=Annihilated; destroyed; doomed; perished) **

* Note 111:002a. The verse give an historical account of an individual. He had amassed a lot of wealth, muscle power and gathered supporters covering his flanks. He was an uncle of Holy Prophet s.a.w and his staunchest opponent and named Abee-Lahb. The name Abee-Lahb is also one phrase which speaking literally is comprised of two words. The first is أَبِى which means the father, master, owner or person with power and control. The second is لَهَبٍ which literally means the flames and refers to the hot-tempered person. The combination of two words reflects a person who has a fiery temper and a short fuse. Such men usually attract more of their kind around them and form gangs to reflect leaders. The phrase as a name portrayed him accurately

** Note 111:002b. The verse provides the historical account about an individual who had a lot of muscle power and supporters covered his flanks. They perished when they opposed the Messenger of God. Similar utter ruin awaits those who oppose those engaged in the work of God. It is a rule of universal application.

Holy Qor-aan                                         111:003                                     مَآ أَغۡنَىٰ عَنۡهُ مَالُهُ ۥ وَمَا ڪَسَبَ

                Maa-ugh-naa-un-ho-maa-lo-hoo-wa-maa-ka-sub

                Neither all he owns nor what he earned will avail him

  • مَاۤ — Maa — Neither (= Never; no; nor; not; not all; total negation)
  • أَغۡنَىٰ — Ugh-naa — Would avail (= v., Benefit; dispense with; ended the need of; exempt. No benefit or profit would accrue)
  • عَنۡ — Un — From (= Concerning; regarding; relative to)
  • هُ — Ho — Him (= pro., s., m., 3rd person.  Refers to Abee-Lahb type person)
  • مَا — Maa — All that (= All that and whatever assets, gains, money, property, richness, sources and wealth one owns. a/t/a children. Much wider meanings spring up by seeing this word as a combination of two words. Firstly, مَاۤ meaning ‘all that; whatever or whatsoever.’ Secondly لَ meaning ‘Belongs to, is owned by, is for the benefit, purpose or reason. Thus the combination includes everything one owns) *
  • لُ — Lo — Has / Owns (= For, for the benefit, purpose or reason; owned by)
  • هٗ — Hoo — His (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to Abee-Lahb type person)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • مَاۤ — Maa — Nor (= Neither; never; no; not all; total negation)
  • ڪَسَب — Ka-sub — Earned (= Accomplished; accumulated; acquisitions; gatherings)

* Note 111:003. There is a clear distinction betweenمَا لُهُ ۥ and مَا ڪَسَب. The former means the assets, property, wealth and fortune a person may have inherited. The latter includes all that he may have himself earned and added to aforesaid inheritance. The moral is that whoso abuses his resources will see them wasted if not put to good use. The rule of universal application is that failure to serve mankind results in real destruction.

Holy Qor-aan                                                  111:004                                        سَيَصۡلَىٰ نَارً۬ا ذَاتَ لَهَبٍ۬

                Sa-yus-laa-naa-run-zaa-ta-la-hub

                Soon he will burn in fire with flames

  • سَ — Sa — Soon (= In near term; in the near future; in a short while)
  • يَصۡلَى — Yus-laa — He will burn (= Enter; plunged in; roast; scratch)
  • نَارً۬ا — Naa-run — A fire (= Hell; anger, punishment or wrath of Allah, purgatory. Literally the source of light and heat)
  • ذَاتَ — Zaa-ta — Of (= Giving rise to; with)
  • لَهَبٍ — La-hub — Flames (= Blazing; leaping; of fiery anger)

Holy Qor-aan                                                  111:005                                          وَٱمۡرَأَتُهُ ۥ حَمَّالَةَ ٱلۡحَطَبِ

                Wa-um-rau-to-hoo-hum-maa-la-tul-ha-tub

                And his wife is the carrier of fuel

  • وَ   — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • ٱمۡرَأَتُ — Um-rau-to — Wife (= Female of mankind; female associate; lady; woman)
  • هُ — Ho0 — His (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to Abee Lahb)
  • حَمَّا لَةَ — Hum-maa-la-ta…(ul) — She Carrier (= v., s., f., She-carrier of wood used to burn as fuel. Woman loaded with or carrying wood to burn as fuel. Also, in medical field, carrier of germs or infested)
  • ٱلۡحَطَب — Ul- ha-tub — Fuel (= Crackling wood; fuel in the form dry wood that easily catches fires and burns fast; wood to burn. a/t/a “Thorns of sadan (a bush with thorns that cause lot of physical pain) which she used to put on the way of the Prophet s.a.w. Reference generally is to slandering and defaming by gossip)

Holy Qor-aan                                                  111:006                                        فِى جِيدِهَا حَبۡلٌ۬ مِّن مَّسَدِۭ

                Fee-jee-day-haa-hub-loom-mim-ma-sud

               In (= there is and will be around) her neck a twisted rope made from palm-fiber

  • فِىۡ — Fee — Round / In (= 1. Contained in or amidst a duration, event, time, place, period, thing or situation; inside 2. Concerning; for the sake of; in reference, relative or pursuant to; regarding)
  • جِيدِ — Jee-day — Neck (= Part of the body between head and body which is always fully exposed to and visible to others)
  • هَا — Haa –Her (= pro., s., f., 3rd person., Refers to the wife of Abee Lahb)
  • حَبۡلٌ۬ — Hub-loon..(m) — Twisted rope (= Halter made of thick twine)
  • مِّن — Min…(m) — From (= From the class, category, count, kind, persons or out of)
  • مَّسَدِ — Ma-sud — Palm fiber (= Coir; fibrous material; fiber in the palm-leaves that is very tough to break; twisted strands. a/t/a faggots)
