The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                       104:001 to 007

Verses of the Holy Qor-aan are quoted on this site with the numbers, the first set of three being the number of Soorah (Chapter) followed by the last set of three being the number of the verse. The numbers include بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ‏‏ as the verse #1 in every Soorah except the Soorah #9. The original Arabic word is shown first, or in Col #1. The phonetic transliteration in English is shown next, or in Col #2, and is based upon words commonly pronounced like bat, cat, sat → fate, gate, hate → bait, trait → bay, nay, say → be, he, she → bet, pet, wet → bit, fit, sit → cot, dot, rot → boot, hoot, root → bout, rout → but, cut, hut, ultimatum. The English equivalent to the Arabic words (shown first, or in Col #1) are provided next, or in Col #3. Some other alternates in English used in other translations are given last, or in Col #4.

Chapter # 104                                Soora-tol-Homo-zauh                                   سُوۡرَةُ الهُمَزة

بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ

وَيۡلٌ لِّـكُلِّ هُمَزَةٍ لُّمَزَةِ ۙ‏ ○ اۨلَّذِىۡ جَمَعَ مَالًا وَّعَدَّدَهٗ ۙ‏ ○ يَحۡسَبُ اَنَّ مَالَهٗۤ اَخۡلَدَهٗ‌ ۚ‏ كَلَّا‌ لَيُنۡۢبَذَنَّ فِى الۡحُطَمَةِ ۖ‏ ○ وَمَاۤ اَدۡرٰٮكَ مَا الۡحُطَمَةُ ؕ‏ ○ نَارُ اللّٰهِ الۡمُوۡقَدَةُ ۙ‏ ○ الَّتِىۡ تَطَّلِعُ عَلَى الۡاَفۡـــِٕدَةِ ؕ‏ ○ اِنَّهَا عَلَيۡهِمۡ مُّؤۡصَدَةٌ ۙ○‏ فِىۡ عَمَدٍ مُّمَدَّدَةٍ‏ 

  1. Bis-mil-laa-hir-rah-maa-nir-ra-heem
  2. Wai-loonl-lay-kool-lay-ho-mo-za-tinl-lo-mo-zauh
  3. Ul-la-zee-ja-ma-aa-maa-lunw-wa-ud-dauh
  4. Yuh-sa-bo-un-na-maa-la-hoo-ukh-la-dauh
  5. Kul-la-la-yoom-ba-zun-na-fil-ho-to-mauh
  6. Wa-maa-ud-raa-ka-mul-ho-to-mauh
  7. Naa-rool-la-hil-moo-qa-dauh
  8. Ul-la-tee-tut-ta-le-o-alul-uf-aiy-dauh
  9. In-na-haa-alai-him-moe-sa-dauh
  10. Fee-aa-ma-dinm-mo-mud-da-dauh

  1. With the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful I begin.
  2. Woe onto every backbiter, slanderer
  3. He who hoarded wealth and kept counting it
  4. Thinking his wealth will certainly immortalize him
  5. Certainly not. He surely will be flung in the Crusher
  6. And what (or who) will tell you what the Crusher is?
  7. (It is) Allah’s fire, blazing in a big way
  8. That rises over the hearts
  9. Most certainly on them it is encircling
  10. In columns – stretched, extended and towering.

The Holy Qor-aan                                         104: 001                                   ○بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ‏‏

Bis-mil-laa-hir-rah-maa-nir-ra-heem

With the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful I begin.

(Beginning, commencing, starting)

  • بِ — B…(is) — With (= This Arabic word literally means ‘with’. Its translation in English is more accurate with ‘with’ than with ‘in’)
  • سۡمِ — Ism…(il) — The name of (= The way to be addressed or called)
  • اللهِ — Laa-h…(ir) — Allah (= The Almighty God; the One Only worthy of worship)
  • الرَّحۡمٰنِ — Rah-maa-n.(ir) — The Most Beneficent (= The One who fully, totally and wholly benefits all, to the maximum, with no condition, limitation or restriction. Compassionate. Gracious)
  • الرَّحِيۡمِ — Ra-heem — The Most Merciful (= The One who fully, totally and wholly showers mercy, to the maximum, again and again, continually, indefinitely and perpetually like the incoming waves from the oceans)

The Holy Qor-aan                                        104: 002                                       وَيۡلٌ۬ لِّڪُلِّ هُمَزَةٍ۬ لُّمَزَةٍ

Wai-loonl-lay-kool-lay-ho-mo-za-tinl-lo-mo-zauh

Woe onto every backbiter, slanderer

  • وَيۡلٌ۬ — Wai-loon(l) — Woe (= How sad or unfortunate; painful chastisement; sadness; what a misfortune)
  • لِّ –Lay — Onto (= For; for the purpose or reason; concerning; regarding; relative to; directed toward; with intent to or object of)
  • كُلٌّ — Kool-lay — Every (= All; altogether; everyone)
  • هُمَزَةٍ۬ Homo-za-tin(l) Back-biter* (= One who derides; defamer without evidence; insulter; one who cuts jokes on; one making innuendo, mimicry, sarcasm; scandal-spreading; slanderer; slander-mongering;)
  • لُّمَزَة — Lo-mo-zauh — Slanderer* (= Accuser with or without proof; defamer; insulter; rumor monger; traducer; teller of truth with bad intent and ulterior motive)

* Note 104:002. Malik Ghulam Farid’s translation quoted the Arabic dictionary Uq-rib that has defined هُمَزَةٍ as ‘finding fault in others behind their backs’ and لُّمَزَة as ‘finding fault in others behind their backs as well as on their faces.’

The Holy Qor-aan                                         104: 003                                      ٱلَّذِى جَمَعَ مَالاً۬ وَعَدَّدَهُ ۥ

Ulla-zee-ja-ma-aa-maa-lunw-wa-ud-dauh

Who hoarded wealth and kept counting it

  • الَّذِىۡ — Ulla-zee — Who (= s., m, 3rd person. Refers to aforesaid slanderer)
  • جَمَعَ — Ja-ma-a — Hoarded (= Accumulated; amassed; assembled; collected; gathered; kept adding; piled up; stored; treasured; warehoused)
  • مَالاً۬ — Maa-lun — Wealth (= Assets; money; property; riches)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conjunction that connects words, phrases or clauses)
  • عَدَّدَ — Ud-da-dauh — Kept counting (= Continually adding up; counting time after time; kept sedulously arranging and re-arranging; laid aside)
  • هُ — H(oo) — It (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to the wealth hoarded)

The Holy Qor-aan                                         104: 004                                     يَحۡسَبُ أَنَّ مَالَهُ ۥۤ أَخۡلَدَهُ ۥ

Yuh-sa-bo-un-na-maa-la-hoo-ukh-la-dauh

Thinking his wealth will certainly immortalize him

  • يَحۡسَبُ — Yuh-sa-bo — Thinking (= Conjecturing; estimating; guessing; imagining)
  • اَنَّ — Un-na — Certainly (= Definitely; doubtlessly; positively; surely; verily)
  • مَال — Maa-la — Wealth (= Assets; money; property; riches) *
  • ه — Hoo — His (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to the hoarder of wealth)
  • أَخۡلَدَ — Ukh-la-dauh — Immortalize (= Add perpetuity; make one abide and live forever; make him eternal; render perpetual)
  • هُ — H(oo) — Him (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to the hoarder of wealth)

* Note 104:004. Most translations of مَالَهُ construe it as a combination of two words and state as shown above, and that logically does get connected to the word مَالاً۬ in the previous verse. However, a much broader, more comprehensive and enormously rich meanings come up when مَالَهُ is construed as a combination of three words — being مَا meaning ‘all that or whatever’ plus لَ meaning ‘belonging to, for, or owned by’ plus هُ meaning ‘his or him’ — because then مَالَهُ will mean ‘All that belongs to him’ — not just the wealth he has stored.

The Holy Qor-aan                                         104: 005                                        كَلَّا‌ۖ لَيُنۢبَذَنَّ فِى ٱلۡحُطَمَةِ

Kul-la-la-yoom-ba-zun-na-fil-ho-to-mauh

Certainly not. He surely will be flung in the Crusher

  • كَلَّا — Kul-laa — Absolutely not (= Fact is; instead; nay; the reality is. The word كَلَّا combines 2 Arabic words ( كَ meaning ‘like or as if’ and لَّا meaning ‘not’) that when joined mean ‘like it was not’ or ‘absolutely never’; Nay; the fact is that)
  • لّ — La — Surely (= Absolutely; certainly; definitely; positively; truly; verily)
  • يُنۢبَذَنَّ  — Yoom-ba-zun-na — He’ll be flung (= Cast; discarded; dumped; hurled; put; plunged; thrown)
  • فِى — Fee…(l) — In (= Contained inside or amidst a duration, event, time, place, period, thing or situation)
  • ٱلۡحُطَمَةِ — Ho-to-mauh — The Crusher (= Thrasher. A device, instrument, means or mechanism used to break up solid hard materials into tiny pieces; something that will consume all and everything; the crushing disaster; the crushing torment; destroying flame; punishment that will break up and crush)

The Holy Qor-aan                                         104: 006                                      وَمَآ أَدۡرَٮٰكَ مَا ٱلۡحُطَمَةُ

Wa-maa-ud-raa-ka-mul-ho-to-mauh

And what (or who will) tell you what the Crusher is

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • مَآ — Maa — What / Who (= All that; whatever; whatsoever)
  • أَدۡرَٮٰ — Ud-raa — Tell (= Add to knowledge; clarify; convey; explain; expound; inform; make one realize; make another person aware, comprehend and understand; reveal; show)
  • كَ — Ka — You (= pro., s., m., 2nd person. You single male. The addressee of this divine message is initially the Holy Prophet s.a.w and secondarily every Moslem, in fact every human being. See the Note under 002:005)
  • مَا — Ma…(ul) — What is (= All that; whatever; whatsoever)
  • ٱلۡحُطَمَةِ — Ho-to-mauh — The Crusher (= Thrasher. A device, instrument, means or mechanism used to break up solid hard materials into tiny pieces; something that will consume all and everything; the crushing disaster; the crushing torment; destroying flame; punishment that will break up and crush)

The Holy Qor-aan                                 104: 007                                              نَارُ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُوقَدَةُ

Naa-rool-la-hil-moo-qua-dauh

 (It is) Allah’s fire, blazing in a big way

  • نَارُ — Naar(ol) — Fire (= Anger, punishment or wrath of Allah; hell; pit of fire; purgatory)
  • اللّٰهِ –Laa-hi(l) — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)
  • ٱلۡمُوقَدَةُ — Moo-qa-dauh — Blazing (= Burning; fired up; kindled; lit up; set in ablaze)

The Holy Qor-aan                                         104: 008                                          ٱلَّتِى تَطَّلِعُ عَلَى ٱلۡأَفۡـِٔدَةِ

Ul-la-tee-tut-ta-le-o-alul-uf-aiy-dauh

That rises over the hearts

  • ٱلَّتِى — Ul-la-tee — That (= s., f., 3rd person. Refers to aforesaid ‘fire’)
  • تَطَّلِعُ — Tut-ta-le-o — Rises (= Climbs up; engulfs; grows; leaps; overpowers; grows; leaps up; rages reaches up; takes up the control)
  • عَلَى–  Ala…(ul) — Over (= Above; against; for; on; on top of; upon)
  • ٱلۡأَفۡـِٔدَةِ — Uf-aiy-dauh — The hearts (= Minds; souls; feelings in the hearts)

The Holy Qor-aan                                         104: 009                                          إِنَّہَا عَلَيۡہِم مُّؤۡصَدَةٌ۬

In-na-haa-alai-him-moe-sa-dauh

Most certainly on them it is encircling

  • اِنَّ — In-na — Most certainly (= Absolutely; definitely; doubtlessly; indeed; positively; really; surely; truly; verily)
  • هَا — Haa — It (= pro., s., f., 3rd person. Refers to the ‘fire’)
  • عَلَيۡ — Alai — On (= Above; against; for; on top of; over; upon)
  • هِمۡ — Him — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Refers to aforesaid slanderers)
  • مُّؤۡصَدَةٌ — Moe-sa-dauh — Encircling (= Enclosing, encompassing and wrapping all around. Closing in, confining and surrounding from all sides. Circled and vaulted over entirely, totally and wholly)

Fee-aa-ma-dinm-mo-mud-da-dauh

  • عَمَدٍ۬ — Aama-din(m) — Columns (= Bars of an enclosure; pillars)
  • مُّمَدَّدَة — Mo-mud-da-dauh — Towering (= Enormously expanded; outrageously extended; wildly stretched out; out-stretched; very high, long or tall)
