The Holy Qor-aan                                      030:002                                                              الٓمّؕ‏

Alif. Laam. Meem.

I am Allah.  I Know All (I Know the best).

  • ا           Alif                     Abbreviation (one of the Haroof-e-Mo-qut-te-aat) for the word Allah
  • لٓ          Laam-meem     Abbreviation (one of the Haroof-e-Mo-qut-te-aat) for the word Aa-lum meaning “I know all”.
  • مّ           Meem                  Abbreviation (one of the Haroof-e-Mo-qut-te-aat) for the word Au-lum meaning “I Know the best”

Note: Opinions differ regarding alphabets used here and in the beginning of many other chapters of the Holy Qor-aan.  Allegation that they were the initials of the scribes who wrote them down is downright preposterous for insinuating human hands adding to what was really revealed by Allah, the God Almighty. And when you said, “Listen Moses! we can’t be content with just one food.
So pray for us to your God to bring us out of earth what it grows (**)
Its herbs and its cucumbers and its kernels
And its lentils and its onions.”
He said, “Do you seek to change and get what is inferior with that is superior.
Go to any town. Surely then for you is what you asked for.”
And humiliation and destitution were inflicted on them.
And they bought from the wrath of Allah.
This was because they had been rejecting the signs of Allah
And they had been persecuting Prophets without justification.
This was because they had disobeyed and had been transgressing.

* Note: 003:036. In instant case the translation ‘Woman’ is better than the translation ‘Wife’. The reason is that Amran or Imraan is said to be the father of prophets and brothers Moses and Haroon who were known to be some 600 years before the lady Mary was born. And Imraan was the forefather of the tribe in which over 600 years later the lady Mary became the mother of Jesus Christ.

* Note 003:008. This highlights two aspects regarding the translation of Holy Qor-aan.

I – Effect of Punctuation Marks

There are two clauses and a punctuation mark between them. The mark dictates that the reader pauses after the first clause. The reader then goes on to the next clause and the meanings are clear. There is no need for a prosumer to presume the existence of a word in order to squeeze out any non-existing meanings that he wants.

The two clauses are “None knows its interpretation except Allah.  And the deeply-rooted in knowledge say …”  Drs Khan and Al-Hilali and Dr Khan among others have correctly translated this verse this way.

By not pausing at this punctuation mark, by presuming that there was the word ‘who’ that connected the first clause with the next clause, and by linking the prior and the later clauses together as one sentence, it produces drastically different meanings, i.e.,  “None knows its interpretation except Allah and the deeply-rooted in knowledge who say, “Our Lord …”

Such wrong translations present meanings which are not proper for the following reasons.

1. Such meanings convey that the scholars deeply-rooted in knowledge are equals of Allah in knowing what the Holy Qor-aan means. No Moslem in his right mind can proclaim, profess or practice such idolatry meanings.

2. Such meanings necessitate presuming the word who between the deeply-rooted in knowledge andwho say. Let us be very clear about this point.

— Without presuming the non-existing aforesaid word ‘who’, the meanings would be “None knows its interpretation except Allah. And the deeply-rooted in knowledge say, “Our Lord …” And this is the right translation.

—  By assuming the existence of aforesaid word ‘ who’, the meanings would be “None knows its interpretation except Allah and the deeply-rooted in knowledge who say, “Our Lord….” This is palpably the wrong translation that contradicts Laa Elaha Illa Allah.

— Presuming the existence of non-existing word ‘who’ is the tell-tale key that shows that the two independent clauses are different, distinct and separate. It’s improper to continue and construe them as one single continuing sentence.

II – Duplication of earlier translations

Duplication of words, concepts and even errors in the earlier translations in later works shows only that the later translations are no independent works but just copy-cat reproductions of earlier works. Chronological dates of translations contradict or justify any criticism of them.

One concrete example is the translation of word  تَأۡوِيلِ  (tau-vee-l). This noun means a fact that ends another continuation or process as its after-effect, apex, climax, conclusion; consequence, ending, follow up, finality, outside limit or result. It is the ultimate extreme, height, depth or length to which the meanings of a statement can be elasticized by way of its elaboration, explanation, exposition, extension, extrapolation and interpretation. It includes the following.

  1. Genuine explanation, exposition and meanings that can be inferred and insinuated.
  2. True detail, elaboration, extrapolation and extension by slicing and splitting each word.
  3. Any concoction, fabrication, making up or pursuit of one’s own agenda done by willfully misconstruing, misrepresenting and twisting the real meanings under the pretext of trying to fathom out some concealed, hidden, invisible, unobvious or veiled meanings of a statement.

The earliest translation of this word  تَأۡوِيلِ  that we saw were just copied by subsequent translators, sometimes exactly in those words and sometimes with slight variations as following.

  1. In verse 003:008, “Interpretation.”
  2. In verse 004:060, “final determination’ [aya, mmk, tda], ‘more suitable to (achieve) the end’ [mma], ‘in the end’ [msa, mmp, mgf, mzk] and ‘in the long run’ [aro])
  3. In verse 007:054, “fulfilment of warnings’ [msa, mgf], ‘fulfilment of that of which it warns’ [mzk], ‘fulfilment’ [mmp, daz, njd], ‘final fulfillment of’ [mmk, tda], ‘final fulfilment of the event’ [aya], ‘final sequel’ [mma] and final sequel (of the warning)’ [aro])

Prayers for Forgiveness

(Please read our Commentary titled the PRAYERS, All Are In the Qor-aan

as a prelude to the following prayers)

Prayers for Forgiveness

Forgiveness in American Heritage Dictionary is defined as (1) to excuse for a fault or offense, (2) to stop feeling anger or resentment against, and (3) to absolve from payment of.

Forgiveness in common parlance conveys an act, behavior, conduct or dealing by a person wronged who forgoes certain rights created in him by a wrongdoer’s actions, behavior, conduct, dealings, prohibitions or violations.   It is running afoul against certain laws, rules, regulations or societal orders by a wrongdoer that entitles the wronged person or victim to impose a penalty or accept compensation in exchange.   Stated simply, everyone has the right to be not violated and that puts all others under an obligation to acknowledge, honor and respect it by not violating that right.

The essential aspect of forgiveness in the worldly scenarios is that the person adversely affected and victimized has the right to avenge for the wrong done by the wrongdoer.   All societal orders stand sanctified with the authority to take revenge from the wrongdoers based upon the common sense that every victim of a wrongdoing does not have the ability, capability or suitability to enforce the culpability for wrongs done.

Primitive as well as modern governments are empowered to penalize the violators.   Crimes against individuals are recognized as wrongs against the society and avenged by imposing penalty on the criminals.   Penalties in criminal cases entailing capital sentence stretch all the way to forfeiting wrongdoer’s life.    Lesser sentences including banishment, chastisement, exile, incarceration, hard labor and lashing are recognized and imposed based upon various cultures, countries and creeds.   Appropriateness, harshness or severity of a penalty for a crime is not the issue here – since legislatures in civilized world and judges in common law decide that.

Some jurisdictions, laws, religions and societies offer alternatives to the physical punishment being carried on a wrongdoer.   This phenomenon moves the conflict from the arena of a criminal trial to the annuls of civil laws where give-and-take and negotiations settle controversies.   The negotiated settlements determine the amount of damages which then are compensated customarily with some specified cash or in kind that the wrong-doer pays the victim.   One such alternative provided by the Holy Qor-aan (002:179 & 180) as the Law of Compensation or Que-saas is one of the cardinal principle of Islaam.

In spiritual scenario the person wronged by violating fellow human beings right is considered to be a wrong committed against the Creator, the Almighty God.   Naturally the forgiveness must also come from that One and the Only One Almighty.   The forgiveness by the Almighty is not the same as the Clergy of almost every schools and religions dispense, sell and exploit by misleading the wronged and wrongdoers to believe.

Clergy’s declaring one class of people as holy while condemning another huge majority to eternal menial labor as the Untouchables, or lauding a suicide-bomber killing innocents as a martyr entitled to 70 virgins in heavens, or attempted execution of one person as a martyred savior for all sins of all people for all times, are examples of extreme ignoramus.   On the rational and reasonableness basis, few construe those foul acts as the genuine forgiveness from God.

No one can deny the action – the absolute minimums of developing remorseful attitudes, adopting corrective measures and demonstratively taking actions to compensate the victims of one’s wrongs.   But such action when accompanied by personal prayers, sincere supplications and innermost beseeching by using the following prayers provided in the Holy Qor-aan goes a long way.

Some of these prayers are the direct commands by the Almighty God who as the Creator knew best what His creations would forever in future need during their happy or sad times, hours of need or problem, and occasions and opportunities to develop and progress.   Some of these were initially cried out and submitted by the prophets and their followers during their hours of need, distress, sickness, opposition, persecution or other problems that needed miraculous solutions.   Everyone can enjoy the blessings that blossom out as a result of these prayers.   Trillions of Moslems and those not-yet-Moslems have tried these prayers throughout the history of mankind.   I have tried them.   Try them.

** Note 003:005. A criticism is levied against various translators who have included the first part of this verse and/or its translation as a part of the preceding verse.  Doing so may produce some academic hair-splitting differences in the over-all interpretation of the verses when translated separately or collectively.

In reality, however, placing a part of this verse in the preceding verse neither changes the Text nor materially influence its meanings. That’s why this site decided not to post these verses together as 003:004 and 005. Instead, following the general consensus this site has put them up  separately as two verses numbering 003:004 and 003:005.

  • Imam A. Yusuf Ali (USA 1977) in his work presented both the subject text and its translation as a part of the preceding verse.
  • Dr. Ahmad Zindan (London 1989) in his work did not provide the Text, but he presented its translation as a part of the preceding verse.
  • Dr Al-Hilali and Dr Khan (Saudi Arabia – Revised Edition January 2001)  in their work presented both the subject text and its translation as a part of this verse.
  • M Zafrulla Khan Khan (India 2012) presented in his work the Text as a part this verse and presented its translation in one continuation of both the verses.
  • Mirza B. D. Mahmood Ahmad (IIPL 1957) presented in his work the Text as a part this verse but its translation as a part of the preceding verse.
  • Malik Ghulam Farid (IIPL 1988) presented in his work the Text is as a part this verse but provided its Translation as a part of preceding verse.
  • Maulana A. A. Maodoodi (Lahore 1989) presented the Text as a part this verse and its translation as a part of the preceding verse.
  • Mermaduke Pickthall (Print Taj Co Print) placed both the text and its translation as a part of just this one verse.
  • Maulana Muhammad Ali (Lahore 1985) placed both verses [cited mostly in above works as #4 and #5] in their entirety as only one verse and numbered it #3. Thus he eliminated any difference between whether the subject text and its translation were part of one verse or that of the other.
  • Dr. Muhammad Mohsin Khan (Riyadh 2001) presented in his work both the text and translation as a part of this verse.
  • N. J. Dawood (1974) in his work did not provide the Text, but presented its Translation as a part of the preceding verse.
  • Maulwi Sher Ali (QPR Ed 1966) presented both the Text and Translation as a part of the preceding verse, but in a later edition (12th Ed 1979) presented the Text as a part this verse and provided its Translation as a part of preceding verse.

There may have been some criticism against various translators (mentioned below alphabetically) who have included the first part of this verse and/or its translation as a part of the preceding verse. Doing so may produce some academic hair-splitting differences in the over-all interpretation of the verses when translated separately or collectively, but in reality there is no change in the Text or its meanings.
