The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                                    007:029

 

وَاِذَا فَعَلُوۡا فَاحِشَةً قَالُوۡا وَجَدۡنَا عَلَيۡهَاۤ اٰبَآءَنَا وَاللّٰهُ اَمَرَنَا بِهَا‌ ؕ قُلۡ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ لَا يَاۡمُرُ بِالۡفَحۡشَآءِ‌ ؕ اَتَقُوۡلُوۡنَ عَلَى اللّٰهِ مَا لَا تَعۡلَمُوۡنَ

Wa  aiy-zaa  fa-aa-loo  faa-hay-sha-taun  qaa-loo                                                                  Wa-jaud  naa  alai  haa  aa-baa-aa  naa                                                                                      Wa  ul-laa-ho  aa-ma-ra  naa  bay  haa                                                                                         Qool  in-na  ul-laa-ha  laa  yau-mo-ro  bay  il-fauh-shaa-aiy                                                  Aa  ta-qoo-loo-na  aa-la  ul-laa-hay  maa  laa  tau-la-moo-n

 

And when they did a lewd act, they said,                                                                          “We found our forefathers did that                                                                                      And by God Allah had ordered us about that.”                                                                Say, “Allah never commands with lewdness.                                                                    Do you say about Allah what you don’t know?”

 

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet)
  • اِذَا — Aiy-zaa — When (= At the time or event; call to mind; recall; remember; think of the time, event, occasion or opportunity)
  • فَعَلُوۡا — Fa-aa-loo — Did / Done (= v., past., m., pl., Acted; committed; dealt; did; fared;  performed; reacted; returned; proceeded; treated. A/t/a,  ‘they do,’ ‘commit’ and ‘they (- the disbelievers) commit’ but using this verb in the present tense is an in accurate translation of the verb in the past tense that the Holy Qor-aan has used)
  • فَاحِشَةً — Faa-hay-sha-ton — Lewdness (= n., s., Abomination . Illegality. Immorality. Indecency. Inherently bad, evil, foul, immoral, improper, lewd, obscene, repulsive, shameful, sinful or unseemly act, conduct, deed, practice or thing. Open foul infraction. Sexual perversion. Violation. Wickedness by doing in public view any of the outrages. A/t/a, ‘aught that is shameful,’ ‘a foul deed,’ ‘an indecency,’ ‘an evil,’ ‘act of indecency,’ ‘some lewdness,’ ‘Fahisha (evil deed, going round the Ka’ba in naked state, every kind of unlawful sexual intercourse,’ ‘abomination’ and ‘indecent act’)
  • قَالُوۡا — Qaa-loo — They said (= v., past, pl., m., 3rdperson: All those men announced;        called; declared; told. See our Commentary ‘You say’ means … A/t/a, ‘they say’ say’ [all] but using this verb in the present tense is no translation of the verb in the past tense that the Holy Qor-aan has used)
  • وَجَدۡ  — Wa-jaud —  Found (= v., past, pl., 1st person. Got; discovered; reached; received)
  • نَآ — Naa — We (= pro., pl., 1st person. Our; Us)
  • عَلَيۡ — Alai — On (= Above; against; before; for; on; on top of; over. A/t/a, ‘doing,’ ‘used to do’ and ‘(practicing) on’)
  • هَا — Haa — It (= pro., s., f., 3rd person., Refers to aforesaid lewd act. A/t/a, ‘this’ and ‘so’)
  • اٰبَآءَ — Aa-baa-aa — Forefathers (= n., pl., Elders; fathers; grandfathers h.h.s. The word also means parents and grandparents. A/t/a, ‘fathers’)
  • نَآ — Naa — Our (= pro., pl., 1st person. Ours; Us)
  • وَ — Wa  — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. Seeوَ   above)
  • اللّٰهُ — Laa-ho — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
  • اَمَرَ — Aa-ma-ra — Commanded (= v., past., s., m., 3rd person. Decreed; dictated; directed; instructed; laid down; mandated; ordained; ordered; taught. See Note 002:211. A/t/a, ‘enjoined’ and ‘hath enjoined’)
  • نَآ — Naa — Us (= pro., pl., 1st person. Our; Us)
  • بِ — Bay — With (= Literally the word بِ  means with. A/t/a, ‘on’ and ‘upon’)
  • هَا‌ — Haa — It (= pro., s., f., 3rd person., Refers to aforesaid lewdness. A/t/a, ‘this’)
  • قُلۡ — Qool — Say (= v., pres., s., 3rd person. Announce; broadcast; call;   convey; declare; inform; explain; state; tell. See 002:031. A/t/a, ‘say to them)
  • اِنَّ — In-na … (ul) — Certainly (= Absolutely; clearly, decidedly; definitely; doubtlessly; indeed; positively; really; surely; truly; verily. A/t/a, ‘certainly’)
  • ٱللَّهَ — Laa-ha — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
  • لَا — Laa — Does not (= Naught; neither; never; none; nor; not at all; absolute denial and total negation without exception. A/t/a, never’)
  • يَاۡ مُرُ — Yau-mo-ro — He mandates (= v., pres., s., 3rd person. Here this word describes God Almighty’s actions towards man. See Note 002:211 and 007:029 below. A/t/a, ‘commands,’ ‘enjoins,’ ‘enjoineth not’ and ‘enjoin’)
  • بِ — Bay — With (= Literally the word بِ  means with. A/t/a, ‘what is’)
  • الۡفَحۡشَآءِ — Fauh-shaa-aiy — Lewd acts (= n., pl., Abomination. Illegality. See  فَاحِشَةً above. A/t/a, ‘indecencies,’ ‘indecency,’ ‘evil,’ ‘foul deeds,’ ‘shameful, ‘lewdness,’ ‘abomination’ and ‘what is indecent’)
  • اَ — Aa — Do (= Word asking a question like are, can, could, do, did, have; had, shell, should, will, would, what, etc. A/t/a, ‘Do,’ ‘how can’ and ‘would you’)
  • تَقُوۡلُوۡنَ — Ta-qoo-loo-na — You say (= v., pres., pl, 2nd person. Announce, argue; broadcast;  call; convey; declare; inform; insist; instruct; maintain, preach; proclaim; profess; propagate; state; teach, tell; train or tutor. See قَالُوۡا  above. A/t/a, ‘Tell ye,’ ‘do you  attribute’ and ‘you tell’)
  • عَلٰى — Alaa — About (= Above; against; before; during; for; on; on top of; over; to; upon. A/t/a, ‘of,’ ‘to,’ ‘concerning’ and ‘about’)
  • اللّٰهِ‌ — Laa-hay — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
  • مَاۤ — Maa — What (= All; that; whatever; whatsoever; at such time; when. A/t/a,   ‘that which’ and ‘which’)
  • لَا — Laa — Do not (= Naught; neither; never; none; nor; not at all; absolute denial and total negation without exception. A/t/a, ‘not’)
  • تَعۡلَمُوۡنَ — Tau-la-moo-n — You know (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Aware. Coach. Help to know. Instruct. Teach; Train. Tutor. Benefitting from the process of  عَلَّمَ. A/t/a, ‘you … know (that it is from Him),’ ‘you … know’ and ‘you know not’ )

 

**  Note 007:029:

  1. The word  يَاۡمُرُ (Yau-mo-ro = v., pres., s.,3rd person) used in verses 002:170 and 002:269 describes Satan’s actions towards man. These actions can be translated into saying that he arouses, bids, breeds, brings about, causes, directs, eggs on, enjoins, entices, exhorts, goads, incites, inflames, instigates, instructs, motivates, moves, prompts, provokes, pushes, rouses, spurs, spurts, stimulates, stirs up, tempts, urges, whips up or whispers. And Satan always acts deviously, secretly, sneakily and underhandedly and generally through Man’s actions.
  1. The same word  يَاۡمُرُ  (Yau-mo-ro = v., pres., s., 3rd person) in verse 003:081 and 004:059 describes the Almighty God’s actions towards man. Man cannot praise the Almighty God enough and so can describe His actions by any superlative he can find. It is not proper to translate actions by man or Satan by adding superlatives which are appropriate for use with the name of the Almighty God. Only God’s actions can be justifiably translated with additional words such as authoritatively, forcefully, judicially and manifestly.
  1. The plural of the word يَاۡمُر (Yau-mo-ro) is  يَاۡمُرُوۡنَ  (Yau-mo-roo-na = v., pres., pl., in 3rd person format in 003:105  and 003:115  or 2nd person format in 003:111). The translation of this word when used to describe Man’s actions which are good can be to admonish, administer, bid, bring forth, cause, command, compel, dictate, direct, educate, enforce, enjoin, exhort, force, impose, instruct, lay down as law, lead down the path, mandate, motivate, move, order, preach, profess, prompt, push, spur, stimulate, teach, train, tutor or urge. However, these acts are best if done fairly, gently, persuasively and not arbitrarily since the Holy Qor-aan requires in the verse 016:126 to ‘call to your God’s way with wisdom and goodly exhortation.’
