The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                                 007:078

 

فَعَقَرُوا النَّاقَةَ وَعَتَوۡا عَنۡ اَمۡرِ رَبِّهِمۡ وَ قَالُوۡا يٰصٰلِحُ ائۡتِنَا بِمَا تَعِدُنَاۤ اِنۡ كُنۡتَ مِنَ الۡمُرۡسَلِيۡنَ‏

 

Fa  aa-qa-roo  n-naa-qa-ta  wa  aa-tao
Aun  aum-ray  raub-bay  him  wa  qaa-loo
Yaa  saa-lay-ho  e-tay-naa  bay  maa  ta-aiy-do  naa
In  koon-ta  may-na  ul-moor-say-lee-n 

 

Then they hamstrung the camel and disobeyed
Regarding the order of their God and said,
“Listen Saaleh! Come to us with all that you threatened
If you are among the Messengers.”

 

  • فَ — Fa — Then (= Consequently; so; thereafter; therefore; then; thus; yet)
  • عَقَرُوا — Aa-qa-roo … (n) — Hamstrung (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. The word hamstrung – strung as ham – signifies smaller animal like a pig killed for roasting on a coal-pit. Killing a big animal like a camel that way shows tribe Thamud’s revulsion and public indignation against letting it graze freely as informed by their Prophet Saleh. The term in English is stated as tied at the knees, confined, cramped, hamstrung, obstructed, restricted or stymied or thwarted. A/t/a, ‘ham-strung,’ hamstrung,’ ‘slew,’                  ‘slaughtered’ and killed’)
  • النَّاقَةَ — Naa-qa-ta — She Camel (= n., A female camel; she-camel)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., It links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet)
  • عَتَوۡا — Aa-tao — Disobeyed (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Abused or misused concession.  Committed excess. Crossed the red line. Disobeyed. Exceeded limits. Flouted the command. Overstepped. Transgressed. Went beyond fairness, justice and truthfulness; A/t/a, ‘disobeyed,’ ‘insolently defied,’ ‘rebelled,’ ‘revolted,’ ‘flouted’ and ‘defied’)
  • عَنۡ– Aun — Regarding (= About; concerning; from; regarding; relative to. A/t/a,  ‘against’)
  • اَمۡرِ — Aum-ray — Order (= n., s., 1. Authority; command; control; decision; decree;  direction; instruction; judgment; responsibility; rule. 2. Affair; issue; matter; situation. A/t/a, ‘the order,’ ‘command’ and ‘commandment’])
  • رَبِّ  — Raub-bay — GOD / LORD (= The Almighty Allah who fills all needs of all creatures. Cherisher. Creator. Guardian. Lord Provident. Master. The Only One Who provides all that sustains life. Ultimate Provider of air, water, food and whatever we and all other creatures need to live and subsist. See 001:002)
  • هِمۡ — Him — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; theirs)
  • وَ   — And (= Conj., It links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above
  • قَا لُوۡا — Qaa-loo — They said (= v., past., pl., 3rdperson: All those men announced;            called; declared; told. See Notes 112:002. A/t/a, ‘challenged …  saying’ and ‘saying’)
  • يٰۤ — Yaa — Listen (= Be attentive; hearken; pay attention; O!)
  • صٰلِحُ — Saa-lay-ho — Saa-leh  (= n., The name of a Messenger / Prophet of Allah)
  • ائۡتِنَا — Aiy-tay-naa — Come to us (= v., pres., pl., 1st person. Bring; carry; cause; fetch; generate; get; produce. The past tense verb for single 3rd person is converted into that of plural 1st person as explained in Note 001:007. A/t/a, ‘bring about,’ ‘bring us,’ ‘bring down on us’ and ‘Bring down the scourge’)
  • بِ — Bay — With (= Literally the word بِ means with. A/t/a, ‘with’)
  • مَاۤ — Maa — All that (= What; whatever; whatsoever; which; at such time; when. A/t/a ‘which,’ ‘the punishment’ and ‘that’)
  • تَعِدُ — Ta-aiy-do — You promise (= v., pres., s., 2nd person. Assure; confirm; guarantee;  pledge; swear; vow; undertake. A/t/a, ‘thou threatenest,’ ‘thou dost threaten’ and ‘you threaten us.’ But the noun in the ‘threats’ and verb in the past tense in ‘you used to threaten us with’ have not translated the verb in the present tense used in the Holy Qor-aan)
  • نَآ — Naa — We (= pro., pl., 1st person. Our; Us)
  • اِنۡ — In — If (= In case; under the circumstances; when; whenever. A/t/a, ‘if,’ ‘indeed’ and ‘if  … indeed’)
  • كُنۡتَ — Koon-ta — You had been (= v., past., s., m., 2nd person. You had been since the past and were continuously. A/t/a, ‘you are’ and ‘thou art’ )
  • مِنَ — May-na … (ul) — From (= Among, from or out of the class or category of several. A/t/a, ‘of,’ ‘one of,’ ‘truly one of’ and ‘truly’)
  • الۡمُرۡسَلِيۡنَ — Moor-sa-lee-n — The Messengers (= n., pl., Apostles; God’s messengers; prophets; sages; saints. A/t/a, ‘Messengers,’ ‘messengers (of Allah)’ and ‘those sent from Allah.’ But the verb as in ‘the sent ones (by God)’ and the singular noun as in ‘an apostle (of God),’ ‘apostle’ and ‘a Messenger’ are no translations of the plural noun in the Holy Qor-aan text)
