The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                             004:131

 

 وَاِنۡ يَّتَفَرَّقَا يُغۡنِ اللّٰهُ كُلًّا مِّنۡ سَعَتِهٖ‌ ؕ وَكَانَ اللّٰهُ وَاسِعًا حَكِيۡمًا

 

Wa-in-ya-ta-fur-ra-kaa                                                                                                                    Yoogh-nil-laa-ho-kool-lun-min-sa-aa-tay-he                                                                                  Wa-kaa-nul-laa-ho-waa-say-un-ha-kee-maa

 

And if they both split                                                                                                              Allah will make all self-sufficient from His own plenteousness                                And Allah has always been Munificent, Very Wise

 

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet)
  • اِنۡ — In — If (= In case; under the circumstances; when; whenever)
  • يَّتَفَرَّقَا — Ya-ta-fur-ra-kaa — They split (= v., pres., 2pl., 3rd person. The two … disagree, differ, dissent, go different ways, separate or split. A/t/a. ‘they disagree (and must part),’ ‘they separate,’ ‘they separate (by divorce)’ ‘they (- the husband and the wife) choose to separate (through divorce obtained by either of them),’ ‘the spouses do separate, (after all efforts for reconciliation have been exerted)’ and ‘you separate’ **)
  • يُغۡنِ — Yoogh-n…(il) — Self-sufficient (= v., pres, s., 3rd person. Dispenses, makes or causes being …. indifferent, independent, not in want, needing no avail, benefit, heed, help or use or profit; get rid of; provide release or satisfaction. A/t/a. ‘Will provide,’ ‘will render them both free from want,’ ‘will compensate,’ ‘will make them independent,’ ‘will make both independent,’ ‘will  make each one of them independent of the other,’ ‘will make them both independent and free from want,’ ‘provide abundance’ and ‘compensate you both’ **)
  • اللّٰهُ — Laa-ho — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
  • كُلًّا — Kool-lun — All (= All; all and every one, time or place; entirely; wholly. A/t/a. ‘For all,’ ‘them both,’ ‘both,’ ‘each’ and ‘each one of them’)
  •  مِّنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of the class or category of several) 
  • سَعَتِ — Sa-aa-tay — Plenteousness (= n., Ability; abundance; bounty; grace; plentiful. A/t/a, ‘All-reaching bounty,’ ‘ampleness,’ ‘abundance,’ ‘bounty’ and ‘vast resources)
  • هٖ‌ — He                  His                   (= pro., s., m; 3rd person. Refers to Allah)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • كَانَ — Kaa-na(ul) — Has been (= v., past., s., m., 3rd person., Continued doing; had been; used to; were, went on doing. Indicates the continuity from the past to the present and leading into the future. A/t/a, ‘is’)
  • اللّٰهُ — Laa-ho — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
  • وَاسِعًا — Waa-say-un — Munificent (= superlative form indicates the biggest, the greatest and the highest highlighting that none more than Him is Amply giving, Bountiful, Charitable, Enormous, Filler of all needs, Free-handed, Generous, Infusing,   Liberal, Magnanimous, Munificent, Openhanded, Sufficing, Unimaginably and Widely Expansive. A/t/a, ‘That careth for all,’ ‘ever Ample-giving,’ ‘Al-Embracing,’ ‘Bountiful,’ ‘Ever Bountiful,’ ‘Ever All-Sufficient for His creatures’ and ‘Infinite.’ See Note  001:001)
  • حَكِيۡمًا‏ — Ha-ke-maa — Very Wise (= superlative form indicates the greatest, the highest, the most, and highlights that none more than Him is Exalted in wisdom. Possessor of wisdom. Extremely Wise. The Wisest. A/t/a, ‘All-Knowing,’ ‘Wise’ and ‘All-Wise.’ See Note 001:001)

 

** Note 004:131. The words يَّتَفَرَّقَا  (ya-ta-fur-ra-kaa referring to the spouses) and يُغۡنِ  (yoogh-nay referring to Allah) begin with the letter  ي  pinpoints that the doers of these verbs are in the 3rd person.

Both these words should have begun with the letter ت   to deduce that the doers thereof were in the 2nd person as was translated by the author N J Dawood. Thus his incorrect translation shows disregard or ignorance about this fundamental element of the Arabic grammar.
