The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                                   006:043

 

وَلَقَدۡ اَرۡسَلۡنَاۤ اِلٰٓى اُمَمٍ مِّنۡ قَبۡلِكَ فَاَخَذۡنٰهُمۡ بِالۡبَاۡسَآءِ وَالضَّرَّآءِ لَعَلَّهُمۡ يَتَضَرَّعُوۡنَ

Wa  la  qud aur-saul-naa  aiy-laa  oma-mim  min  qaub-lay-ka
Fa  aa-khauz-naa  hoom  bay-il  bau-saa-aiy  wa  udz-dzur-raa-aiy
La-aul-la  hoom  ya-ta-dzaur-ra-oo-n

 

And We surely sent messengers to communities before you.                                    Then We caught them with adversity and affliction                                                        That they may grow humble.

 

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., It links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet)
  • لَـقَدۡ — La-qud — Surely (= Two words  لَ  (La) and  قَدۡ  (Qaud) both mean absolutely, certainly, definitely, indeed, obviously, positively,  surely, truly and verily. See Commentary ‘2 Words of Emphasis used together Multiply Effect.’ A/t/a, ‘already’ and ‘indeed’)
  • اَرۡسَلۡنَاAur-saul — We sent (= v., past., pl., 1st person. Appointed; dispatched; deputed;  empowered with the authority; raised; set up. The past tense verb for single 3rd person is converted into that of  plural 1st person as explained in Note 001:007. A/t/a, ‘sent (messengers),’ ‘sent Messengers,’ ‘have … sent (Messengers),’ ‘sent (Apostles)’  and ‘sent forth apostles’)
  • اِلَى — Aiy-laa — To (= In the direction of; to; towards)
  • اُمَمٍ — Oma-mim — Communities (= n., pl. Flocks; folks; groups; nations; people. A/t/a, ‘peoples,’ ‘different people,’ ‘many nations’ and ‘other nations’)
  • مِنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of the class or category of several articles, counts, kind, things, persons or phenomenon)
  • قَبۡلِ — Qub-lay — Before (= Earlier, former, older, past or prior times. Aforetime. Ahead. Something that happened or occurred in prior periods antecedently, historically and previously)
  • كَ — Ka — You (= pro., s., m., 2nd person. You single male. A/t/a, ‘you (O Muhammad s.a.w) and ‘thee.’  See the Note 002:005)
  • فَ — Fa — Then (= After all this; at the end; consequently; finally; hence; so; thereafter; therefore; thus. A/t/a, ‘and’ and ‘then (on their rejecting (Messengers)’
  • اَخَذۡ نٰ — Aa-khauz-naa — We caught (= v., past., pl., 1st person. Got; grabbed; grasped; hit;  seized; snatched; struck; took. The past tense verb for single 3rd person is converted into  that of plural 1st person as explained in Note 001:00.  A/t/a, ‘afflicted’ and ‘visited’)
  • هُمۡ‌ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they. A/t/a, ‘the nations’  and ‘the disbelievers’)
  • بِ  — Bay … (il) — With (= Literally the word  بِ   means with)
  • الۡبَاۡسَآءِ — Bau-saa-aiy — Adversity (= n., Destitution, homelessness, indigence, insolvency, poverty, penury, etc. See Note 002:215. A/t/a, ‘poverty,’ ‘poverty (or loss of wealth),’ ‘distress,’ ‘tribulation,’ ‘suffering,’ ‘destitution, calamities’ and ‘calamities’)
  • وَ — Wa … (udz) — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • الضَّرَّآءِ — Dzur-raa-aiy — Affliction (= n., Ailment, calamity, disease, distress, hurt, illness, injury, pain, sickness, suffering or weakness due to a disability, infirmity or other perilous situations. See Note 002:215. A/t/a, ‘affliction,’ ‘loss in health with calamities,’ ‘adversity,’ ‘adversities’ and ‘misfortunes’)  
  • لَعَلَّ — La-ul-la — That may (= Haply; hopefully; perchance; perhaps; possibly; maybe; wanting and wishing the result to be. A/t/a, ‘so that … might,’ ‘that … might’ and ‘in order that … might’)
  • هُمۡ‌ — Hoom — They (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; theirs)
  • يَتَضَرَّعُوۡنَ — Ya-ta-dzaur-oo-n — Grow humble (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. Be meek, modest, servile, obsequious and unassuming. A/t/a, ‘become humble (before Us),’ ‘humble themselves,’ ‘humble themselves (believe with humility)’ and ‘learn humility’)
