Wa-la-qud-sa-da-qa-ko-mool-laa-ho-wau-aa-da-hoo                                                                  Iz-ta-hoos-soo-na-hoom-bay-iz-nay-he                                                                                      Hut-taa-ezaa-fa-shil-toom-wa-ta-naa-zau-toom-fil-um-ray                                                    Wa-asai-toom-min-bau-day-maa-araa-koom-maa-to-hib-boon

Min-koom-mun-yo-ree-dood-doon-ya-wa                                                                                    Min-koom-mun-yo-ree-dool-aa-khay-ra-tay

Thoom-ma-sa-ra-fa-koom-un-hoom-lay-yub-ta-la-ya-koom                                                Wa-la-qud-afaa-un-koom                                                                                                                    Wul-laa-ho-zoo-fudz-lin-alul-moe-may-nee-n

And most certainly Allah always fulfilled His promise to you                                When you make them feel things according to His plan                                              Until when you flinched, and you disputed the Order,                                                  And you disobeyed after He had shown you what you love.

Among you is he who seeks the goodness of the present life and                              Among you is he who seeks the benefits of the later life.

Then He turned you away from them so that He tests you.                                   And most certainly He pardoned you.                                                                                And by God Allah is the Master of Benevolence for the believers.

** Note 003:153. This verses is among those that are interpreted to relate to the Battle of Ohd (mostly stated as Uhud) although that battle-field has not been named like the Badar in the verse 003:124. Historically these verses could have been revealed after the Ohd skirmish.

Rules of universal application both implied or specified are set in the Holy Qor-aan as assurances to the believers. Rules materialized in the events of the battles of Badr and Ohd are:                                                                                                                                                The divine help comes to believers [003:123 to 127] against disbelievers [003:128/129]. The definition of the believers and what they should expect [003:130 to 137].                    The description of things that happen to the combatants in wars [003:138 to 144].                 The distinction between supporters of the prophets and their opponents [003:145 to 150].

One Rule of universal application is stated in the verse 003:153. Certainly Allah has fulfilled His promise to you whenever you make them feel you as He has planned — by giving you mastery over your opponents — until you have slipped, disputed and disobeyed the Commands after He has shown you some of what you love. The distinct and obvious milestones are:-

  • God has planned that you will gain strength, superiority and mastery on your opponents.
  • One sign of your mastery is that the opponents will feel your practices produce results.
  • Gaining the upper hand would lure some of you to greed, power and worldly goodies.
  • You will fall to temptations after seeing God-given gifts and bounties within your reach.
  • You will initially slip, then dispute what was commanded, and finally disobey out right.
  • God does all this for the purpose of testing and trying you out.
  • God will nevertheless forgive you even after you have committed all those follies.

Violating the Rule of universal application stated in the verse 003:153 was illustrated in the past event of the Battle of Ohd in which believers suffered several painful experiences.

  1. Initially they struck effective blows and it looked like they were about to win the battle.
  2. The prospects of winning made them greedy and the temptation caused them lot of grief.
  3. They argued with each other and disregarded instructions to stay on a key position which was necessary to close the event with a total victory but which opportunity they lost.
  4. At that time the enemy noticed how the lure of an almost-win distracted the believers. It took advantage of the flaw, successfully carried out a come-back, and hurt the believers.
  5. Finally the Almighty God helped the believers as He always does. In this case also He forgave them and saved them from the humiliation of a total defeat as He always does.

Some inaccurate translations and additions inserted without any corresponding word in the original text of the verse 003:153 are stated below. Some ill effects of such inaccuracies have been detailed in several Commentaries including the Preciseness – Hallmark of the Arabic.

— Words “on the day of Uhud” were added by a translator though the Holy Qor-aan neither mentioned Ohd nor any words correspond to them in the original text.

— The word تَحُسُّوۡنَ    (ta-hoos-soo-na) is a verb in the present tense that can mean you make them feel you or you kill and destroy. Its translation in the past tense as ‘you slew,’  ‘were killing,’ or ‘were slaying’ is inaccurate.

— The  word  تُحِبُّوۡنَ‌ (to-hib-boo-na) is a verb in the present tense and means you cherish, covet, desire, love, want or wish. Its translation in the past tense as ‘you loved’ is inaccurate.

— Some works reflect (a) a disregard of the present for the past and past for the present tenses, (b) inconsistency in translations, and/or (c) additions engineered by the author. One work stated that “After He had shown you that which you loved, He withdrew His Help. Among you were those who desired the present world and among you were those who desired the next.”  Another copied the above word-by-word but changed the last word ‘next’ with ‘Hereafter.’ Another stated that “… He withdrew His support from you. Some of you desired the goods of this world and some of you desired the Hereafter.” Another stated “… He had shown you that for which ye long. Some of you desired the world, and some of you desired the Hereafter.” Nevertheless they all translated the verb in the present tense with that in the past tense.

— The word يُرِيۡدُ (yo-ree-do) is a verb in the present tense for the 3rd person and can mean he aims, seeks, seeks, etc as detailed in Note 002:186.  It is correctly translated as ‘that hanker.’ Inaccurate translations of the same in the past tense as ‘who desired’ and also in the 2nd person as ‘you desired’ are extremely unfortunate. Giving past tense to the operative word makes the entire clause wherein it is used a mere narration of a past event and so timed. Such poor translations are not just wrong but also strengthen the theorists of Abrogation who claim that portions of the Holy Qor-aan are now obsolete as they related to those who were involved in just that one event, i.e., the warriors of Ohd Battle. The fact is that the verb يُرِيۡدُ (yo-ree-do) is in present participle form which means that the reality mentioned in it is unendingly true — for all times including the periods yet to come, for all people including the people yet to be born, for all occasions covered by a rule of universal application. Every inaccurate translation of Holy Book is the greatest disservice that anyone can render.

003:150

The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                              003:150

يٰۤـاَيُّهَا الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡۤا اِنۡ تُطِيۡعُوا الَّذِيۡنَ كَفَرُوۡا يَرُدُّوۡكُمۡ عَلٰٓى اَعۡقَابِكُمۡ فَتَـنۡقَلِبُوۡا خٰسِرِيۡنَ‏

Yaa-auy-yo-hul-la-zee-na-aa-ma-noo                                                                                               In-to-te-ool-la-zee-na-ka-fa-roo                                                                                                    Yo-rud-do-koom-alaa-aa-qaa-bay-koom                                                                                      Fa-ton-qa-lay-boo-kjaa-say-ree-n

Listen you all who believed,                                                                                                   If you follow those who disbelieved                                                                              They will turn you back on your heels.                                                                        Thus you become losers.

The Holy Qor-aan has used the Phrase Yaa-auy-yo-hul-la-zee-na-aa-ma-noo many times

  • يٰۤ — Yaa — Listen (= Be attentive; hearken; pay attention; O!)

  • تُطِيۡعُوۡا — To-tee-oo — You follow (= v., Intentionally or voluntarily carry out instructions, copy, duplicate; imitate, immolate, obey, or yield to)

  • كَفَرُوۡا — Ka-fa-roo — Disbelieved (= v., past, pl., 3rd person. Denied, refused and rejected the Faith and belief in Allah, the Holy Qor-aan, Islam and become Moslem. See the Note 002:007 for more meanings. The Holy Qor-aan has stated this fact in the past tense; so it is not accurate to translate the word in the present tense as ‘who disbelieve’)
  • يَرُدُّ وۡ — Yo-rud-doo — Turn back (= v., pres., pl., Arbitrarily, compulsorily or forcibly made to betray, defect, desert, get out, recant, renounce, return, reverse, revert or turn back. **Note 003:150. Inconsistency is apparent in many translations of the Holy Qor-aan.

The verse 003:150 used the word اٰمَنُوۡا (Aa-ma-noo = have believed) and stated the fact in the past tense. Its translation in the present tense as ‘who believe’ is inaccurate [and, daz, mmk, mmp, mzk tda]

The verse 003:150 also used the word كَفَرُوۡا (Ka-fa-roo = have disbelieved) in the past tense. This time the same translator [mzk] correctly translated it, though inconsistently with his translation of another part of the same verse.

The verse 003:152 also used the word كَفَرُوۡا (Ka-fa-roo = have disbelieved’) in the past tense. Again the same translator correctly translated that.

The verse 003:152 used the word اَشۡرَكُوۡا (Ush-ra-koo = They associated) in past tense. But the same person [mzk] translated it inaccurately in the present tense as ‘they associate.’

His translation of the word كَفَرُوۡا (Ka-fa-roo = have disbelieved’) in the past tense in both verses 003:150 and 003:152 is correct. Do such correct translations mitigate other inaccuracies in his translations of the verses? At the very minimum the inconsistency colors the translations.

Another example is reproduced as follows.

“Note 003:152. Inconsistency in the translation [by mmk, tda] of the verse 003:152 is in total disregard of the text of the Holy Qor-aan.

  • Correctly translated is the word سَنُلۡقِىۡ   [Sa-nool-qee =We will cast] in the present tense for use in the present participle form.
  • Incorrectly translated is the word كَفَرُوا [Ka-fa-ro = They disbelieved] in the present tense as ‘those who disbelieve.’
  • Correctly translated is the word اَشۡرَكُوۡا[Ush-ra-koo = They ssociated] as ‘who joined others in the worship.’
  • Incorrectly translated is the word يُنَزِّلۡ [Yo-nuz-zil = Is revealed] in the past tense as ‘had sent.’ “

Everyone cannot be fully aware of all intricacies of the entire language used in the Holy Qor-aan. It is easy to use an earlier translation as the base and make some changes here and there. Minimum knowledge of the language and its grammar by the original translator is a prerequisite.

Applying an independent mind can thwart earlier misunderstandings from perpetuating in subsequent works. Yet this site too may have unwittingly failed to filter out some inaccuracies.

In fact this phenomenon hits hard to anyone who sees the on-line criticisms of The Holy Qor-aan and Islam which almost always is based upon an inaccurate translation of the original. Our effort to count such ill-informed criticisms grew so large and so quickly that we finally gave it up. We condensed the said sad fact in a just aforesaid two-worded phrase almost always.

“On the morning when the Prophet died, Abu Bakr came into the mosque at Al-Madinah and found the people all distracted, and Omar telling them that it was a sin to say that he was dead. Abu Bakr went and ascertained the truth, and coming back into the mosque, cried” “Lo! as for him who worshipped Muhammad, Muhammad is dead but as for him who worshippeth Allah, Allah is alive and dieth not.” Then he recited this verse “and it was as if the people had not known till then that such a verse had been revealed.”

Our Commentaries titled as “LAW – Succession (Caliphate)” and “ISLAM – MULLAH’S Modifications are NOT the True Teachings of Islam” among others enumerate the events which followed the above narration of facts.

  • تَنۡظُرُوۡنَ — Tun-zo-roo-n — Looking for (= v., pres., pl. 2nd person. Beholding. Gazing. Looking, surveying and watching with a commanding view of all you could see. Observing.  Seeing with naked eyes.  Taking notice of.  Watching right before your eyes. Within your sight as you looked on.  You witnessed dazed as you gazed.  Also, this word in different context means awaiting, considering, contemplating, having regard, looking for, reflecting, thinking about, waiting and watching for. A/t/a with some additions:-  ‘While you were actually looking for it,’  ‘With your own eyes,’  ‘What it is like,’  ‘You will see yet (many more wonders happen),’  ‘Why do some of you seek to avoid it,’  ‘You were looking on,’  ‘Now ye have seen him with your own eyes (and ye flinch!’)
