002:146

The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                               002:146

Wa-la-in-aa-tai-tul-la-zee-na-oo-tool-kay-taa-ba-bay-kool-lay-aa-ya-tin
Maa-ta-bay-oo-qib-la-ta-ka
Wa-maa-un-ta-bay-taa-bay-in-qib-la-ta-hoom
Wa-maa-bau-dzo-hoom-bay-taa-bay-in-qib-la-ta-bau-dzin
Wa-la-ee-nut-ta-bau-ta-ah-waa-aa-hoom-min-bau-day-maa-jaa-aa-ka-me-nul-il-may
In-na-ka-ezul-la-may-nuz-zaa-lay-mee-n.

And surely if you bring all signs to those given the Book
Even then they won’t follow your Qibla.
And you are not a follower of their Qibla
And some of them are not followers of others Qibla
And surely if you followed their fancies after the knowledge has come to you
Then you too will be one of the wrongdoers (and so no better than them).

* Note 002:146. The people before Islam followed different scriptures. They turned to different directions for their worships and did not agree on a common Qibla. The verse 002:121 states that the Jews and Christians had desired Moslems to follow their religions. Then verses 002:145, 002:150 and 002:151 came and repeated thrice to Moslems were directed to change their Qibla and they obeyed; see our Commentary ‘Qibla Changed’. The People of the Book differed with each other and did not agree when Islam fixed a Qibla. The Moslems had followed the Holy Prophet s.a.w in implementing the Commandment right away. The verse 002:146 states that the disbelievers didn’t accept the Qibla that was fixed for Moslems. The 002:121 and 002:146 had a common assurance that the Holy Prophet s.a.w had the knowledge. But the consequences for flouting the teachings in these two verses are different and pretty severe. The 002:121 warns a flouter to get no help from God and 002:146 that he will be of the wrongdoers. The initial addressee كَ (you) was the Holy Prophet s.a.w who could not violate a Command. But really the recipients of this change are all human beings whether or not they follow him. The others wanted to stop Moslems from worshiping by facing towards the Qibla in Kau’ba. Moslems have been told to distinguish the right from the wrong and not be the wrongdoer.
