The Holy Qor-aan                                         078:028                               اِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوۡا لَا يَرۡجُوۡنَ حِسَابًا

                 In-na-hoom-kaa-noo-laa-yur-joo-na-hay-saa-bun

                They certainly had not been expecting any reckoning

  • اِنَّ — In-na — Certainly (= Absolutely; definitely; doubtlessly; earnestly; indeed; positively; really; seriously; surely; truly; verily)
  • ھُمۡ‌ — Hoom — They (= pro., pl, .m., 3rd person. Refers to earlier stated person)
  • كَانُوۡا — Kaa-noo — Had been (= v., pl., m., 3rd person. Refers to those who were used to)

The Holy Qor-aaan                                      078:029                                            ؕ وَّكَذَّبُوۡا بِاٰيٰتِنَا كِذَّابًا

                Wa-kuz-za-boo-bay-aa-yaa-tay-naa-kiz-zaa-ba

                And they belied with Our signs as a total lie

The Holy Qor-aan                                         078:030                                    وَكُلَّ شَىۡءٍ اَحۡصَيۡنٰهُ كِتٰبًا ۙ‏‏

                 Wa-kool-la-shai-in-ah-sai-naa-ho-kay-taa-ba

                And everything We have recorded it in a register

The Holy Qor-aan                                         078:031                                فَذُوۡقُوۡا فَلَنۡ نَّزِيۡدَ كُمۡ اِلَّا عَذَابًا

               Fa-zoo-qoo-fa-lun-na-zee-da-koom-il-laa-azaa-baa

               So taste, as a result of your evil deeds We won’t increase you except in punishment.

The Holy Qor-aan                                         078:032                                              اِنَّ لِلۡمُتَّقِيۡنَ مَفَازًا ۙ‏

                 In-na-lil-moot-ta-qee-na-ma-faa-zaa

                Certainly for the pious is the success

                 Ha-daa-eqa-wa-au-naa-bun

                Gardens and vineyards

               And the youthful companions, truly compatible

* Note 078:034. Several translations of the word كَوَاعِبَ (a plural) are expressed with the words like females, maidens and virgins. But this word really reflects only a qualification that “when applied to a girl, means youthful … nearing maturity.” Lane / M Muhammad Ali).  We avoided using several luscious terms that some translations have used such as the following.
o “Full-breasted (mature) maidens of equal age” as per Dr Khan and Dr Al-Hilali.
o “High-bosomed maidens” as per N J Dawood.
o “Perfected maidens of equal age and beauty” as per Ahmad Zidan.

The Holy Qor-aan                                         078:035                                                   وَّكَاۡسًا دِهَاقًا ؕ‏

                Wa-kau-sun-de-haa-qaa

                And a cup overflowing with clean and pure drink

  • دِهَاقًا — De-haa-qaa — Over-flowing (= Filled and spilling out; full to the brim. The Arabic word دِهَاقًا is best translated in English with words like clean and pure, holy, or nice and pleasant which also conform to its translation in Urdu as paak aor tuy-yub. Some translations have added the word ‘wine’)

The Holy Qor-aan                                          078:036                             لَا يَسۡمَعُوۡنَ فِيۡهَا لَـغۡوًا وَّلَا كِذّٰبًا‌ ۚ‏

                 La-yus-ma-oo-na-fee-haa-lugh-won-wa-laa-kiz-zaa-ba

                They will not hear in it any vain talk, and no lie either

  • يَسۡمَعُوۡنَ — Yus-ma-oo-na — They hear (= The act of sound being audible through one’s ears; heed listen; pay attention; respond)
  • فِىۡ — Fee — In (= 1. Amidst, among, contained or inside a duration, event time, place, period, thing or situation. 2. Concerning; in reference, regarding; relative to)
  • هَا — Haa — It (= pro., s., f., 3rd person. Refers to aforesaid ‘Success and Winning situation’)
  • لَـغۡوًا — Lugh-won — Any vain talk (= Dirty, evil, false or foul talk. Idle, unproductive and useless conversation, discourse or discussion of frivolous topics)
  • وَّ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وّ above)
  • لَا — Laa — No (= Absolute denial; never; not at all; total negation)
  • كِذَّ ا بًا — Kiz-zaa-baa — As a total lie (= Entirely, impudently, loudly, openly, really, roundly, strongly, totally and whole-heartedly denied and treated as a lie and falsehood)

The Holy Qor-aan                                          078:037                              جَزَآءً مِّنۡ رَّبِّكَ عَطَآءً حِسَابًا ۙ

                Ja-zaa-un-min-rub-bay-ka-ataa-un-hay-saa-baa

                A reward from your God, a grant accurately measured.

  • جَزَآءً — Ja-zaa-un — Reward (= n., Award, reward or trophy. Also consequence, result or follow up since the word celebrates the appreciation, honor, joy or jubilation for good deeds like those referred to in the verses 003:137055:061 and 078:037. For other meanings see the Note 004:094)
  • مِّنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of the class, category, count, kind or several persons or things)
  • رَّبِّ — Rub-bay — God (= The Almighty Allah who fills needs of all creatures;
    Cherisher; Creator; Guardian; Master; Lord Provident. The Only One Who provides all that sustains life. The Ultimate Provider of air, water, food and whatever we and all other creatures need to live and subsist)
  • كَ — Ka — You (= pro., s., m., 2nd person. You single male. The addressee of this divine message is initially the Holy Prophet s.a.w and secondarily every Moslem, in fact every human being. See the Note under 002:005)
  • عَطَآءً — Ataa-un — A grant (= Bestowing; giving; grant)
  • حِسَابًا — Hay-saa-bun — Measured * (= Accounted; adjusting all credits and debits; amply sufficient; balanced; calculated; finalized gives and takes; full payment; reckoning; settled account; sufficiently commensurate and proportionate to the deeds done, effort put in and actions performed; taking count. See above 078:028 for a different shade of the meanings of this word)

*Note 078:037. The word حِسَابًا (hay-saa-baa) literally means ‘appropriately, equally or properly counted and balanced account’, ‘in equal balance commensurate with the work done.’ The same one word has been used to convey two different shades of its meanings as given in the verses 078:028 and 078:037.

And there is another, almost opposite meanings of this word as a ‘characteristic of the spoken language or of writing that is used to create the effect of conversation.’ Colloquially and customarily it conveys being ‘Beyond measurements’ and ‘over and above the balanced, equal or normal reward.’ In this sense it conforms to the Hadeeth that Islam dismantles and demolishes the previous evil deeds and so do the migration for Allah’s sake and Hujj (pilgrimage to Makkah) as reported in the Sahih Muslim. Other Hadeeth have reported that sincerely embracing Islam begets rewards from ten to seven hundred times.
