وَّالۡمُحۡصَنٰتُ مِنَ النِّسَآءِ اِلَّا مَا مَلَـكَتۡ اَيۡمَانُكُمۡ‌ۚ   كِتٰبَ اللّٰهِ عَلَيۡكُمۡ‌ۚ   وَاُحِلَّ لَـكُمۡ مَّا وَرَآءَ  ذٰ لِكُمۡ اَنۡ تَبۡتَـغُوۡا بِاَمۡوَالِكُمۡ مُّحۡصِنِيۡنَ غَيۡرَ مُسَافِحِيۡنَ‌ ؕ  فَمَا اسۡتَمۡتَعۡتُمۡ بِهٖ مِنۡهُنَّ فَاٰ تُوۡهُنَّ اُجُوۡرَهُنَّ فَرِيۡضَةً‌ ؕ  وَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيۡكُمۡ فِيۡمَا تَرٰضَيۡـتُمۡ بِهٖ مِنۡۢ بَعۡدِ الۡـفَرِيۡضَةِ‌ ؕ  اِنَّ اللّٰهَ كَانَ عَلِيۡمًا حَكِيۡمًا‏

 

Wul-moh-sa-naa-to-may-nun-nay-saa-aiy                                                                                      Il-laa-ma-ma-la-cut-aiy-maa-no-koom                                                                                            Kay-taa-baul-laa-hay-alai-koom

Wa-o-hil-la-koom-maa-wa-raa-aa-zaa-lay-koom                                                                          Un-tub-ta-ghoo-bay-um-waa-lay-koom                                                                                            Moh-say-nee-na-ghai-ra-mo-saa-fay-he-na

Fa-mus-tau-toom-bay-he-min-hoon-na                                                                                          Fa-aa-too-hon-na-o-jo-ra-hoon-na-fa-re-dza-ton

Wa-laa-jo-naa-ha-alai-koom-fee-maa                                                                                              Ta-raa-zai-toom-min-bau-dil-fa-re-dza-tay                                                                                    In-nul-laa-ha-kaa-na-alee-mun-ha-key-maa

 

And forbidden to you are already                                                                                    Chaste from among the women                                                                                              Except what your right hands had owned.                                                                       Allah’s Commandment is upon you.

And allowed for you is what is beyond                                                                                So that you seek with your assets                                                                                            Being virtuous without fornicating

Thus because of what benefits you seek from them with it                                          So you give them their dowers as an obligation.

And no sin on you in what                                                                                                          You both be pleased after filling the obligation.                                                              Surely Allah has always been Very Knowing, Very Merciful 

 

  • وَّ — Wa…(ul) — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon. A/t/a ‘You are also forbidden to take in marriage’)
  • الۡمُحۡصَنٰتُ — Moh-sa-naa-to — Chaste women (= n., f., pl., Faithfully pure, spotless, unblemished, uncorrupted and unsullied women. This word has become synonymous with the married women whom marriage has taken to higher moral levels, to become chaste, pious and virtuous, and has harnessed to them their urges for procreation and surges for recreation. A/t/a, ‘already married women who are in a wedlock’ and ‘all married women’)
  • مِنَ — May-na…(un) — From among (= Among, from or out of the class or category of several articles, counts, kind, things, persons or phenomenon)
  • النِّسَآءِ — Nay-saa-aiy — The women (= Females of the mankind. A/t/a, ‘(captives)’)
  • اِلَّا — Il-laa — Except (= Apart from; but; besides; excluding; save; unless)

{The next 4 words are in several verses: See 004:004}

  • مَاۤ — Maa — What (= All that; whatever; whatsoever; whom; whomever.  Everything of value including one’s time, talent, energy, abilities, potentials and every kind of physical assets, money, property, possessions and wealth. A/t/a, ‘Yet those’ and ‘such’
  • مَلَكَتۡ — Ma-la-kut — Had owned (= v., past., f., 3rd person. Held in ownership or some sort of servitude. The phrase made up four words is used in the Holy Qor-aan in verses such as 004:004, 004:025, 004:026, 023:007, 024:034 and 070:031. The simple and straightforward translation of this phrase is given above. The Holy Qor-aan described the action in this phrase by a verb in the past tense, but some authors translated it wrongly in the present tense. The disgrace of slavery deprecated universally is discussed in our our Commentary The Slavery, but its continuation has been insinuated by translating this phrase as follows:-                                                                         — ‘whom your right hands possess,’                                                                                               — ‘such as your right hands possess,’                                                                                              —  ‘(slaves) … your right hands possess,’                                                                                        — ‘those who have passed into your hands as prisoners,’                                                          ‘such as your right hands possess (taken as Holy war  captives),’                                        — ‘captives whom you own as slaves,’                                                                                            — ‘(captives) whom your right hands possess,’                                                                            — ‘captives whom you own as slaves,’ and                                                                                     — ‘(captives in war) whom your right hands possess (are permitted to you for marriage even if not formally divorced by their husbands, since their captivity is equivalent to divorce).’
  • اَيۡمَانُ –Aiy-maa-no — Right hands (= n., pl., The word refers to all that one owns, possesses, controls or over what one has the controlling authority. Since everyone can have only one right hand, the word ‘right hands’ in plural really reflects two persons who have mutually agreed and confirmed by shaking their right hands and acknowledged as to what each of them had owned or would do. See also 004:004)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — Your (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person., You all men)
  • كِتٰبَ — Kay-taa-ba(ul) — Commandment (= n., The Divine directive of commands. Holy Scripture. A Directive that holds good and is operative eternally. Decreed part of a religion. Spiritual Code codifying the rules of universal application.  2. The Collection of mandated, ordered, prescribed, preserved, recorded, written Do’s and Don’ts.  3. Authentic penned down material in black and white.                                       The reading of the next three words along with its correct translation as a noun is as follows.                                                                                                                                                — ‘This is the Commandment of Allah,’                                                                                        — ‘Such is the decree of Allah,’                                                                                                        — ‘It is a decree of Allah,’                                                                                                                  — ‘(this is) Allah’s ordinance to you,’                                                                                              — ‘these are the Commands of God,’ and                                                                                      — ‘This is the law prescribed,’                                                                                                   The  reading of the next three words along with its incorrect translation as a verb in the past tense is as follows.                                                                                                                     — ‘Thus hath God ordained (Prohibitions),’                                                                                 — ‘Thus has Allah ordained for you’ and                                                                                     — ‘This has Allah enjoined on you.’)
  • اللّٰهِ — Laa-hay — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
  • عَلَيۡ — Alai —  Upon (= Above; against; before; during; for; on; to; over; upon)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person. You all men. You / your)
  • وَ  — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • اُحِلَّ — O-hil-la — Allowed (= v., pass., past., 3rd person. Accepted; allowed; approved; authorized; legalized; licensed; permitted; made lawful. Also, declared appropriate, kosher or proper. A/t/a, ‘lawful’ which is a noun and not the translation of what the Holy Qor-aan has used a verb in the past tense in the passive voice)

Also, contacts, influences, resources and valuables.  A/t/a, ‘wealth (-by granting dowers),’ ‘properties’ and ‘Mahr (bridal-money given by the husband to his wife at the time of marriage) from your property.’ See also Note 002:262)

  • مُّحۡصِنِيۡنَ — Moh-say-nena — Being virtuous (= n., m., pl. Being righteous and marrying. Going after chastity and piety. Becoming faithful, pure, spotless, unblemished or unsullied. A/t/a, ‘desiring chastity,’ ‘chastity,’ ‘marrying properly,’ taking them in marriage,’ ‘in marriage,’ ‘in modest conduct’ and ‘in honest wedlock.’ See الۡمُحۡصَنٰتُ  above) )

Also, the Holy Qor-aan has used this noun but inaccurate translations as a verb are ‘as appointed,’ ‘as prescribed,’ ‘as fixed,’ ‘as have been fixed’ and ‘as a duty’)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • لَا — Laa — No (= Naught; neither; never; none; nor; not at all; absolute denial and total negation without exception. A/t/a, ‘will be no’)
  • جُنَاحَ — Jo-naa-ha — Sin (= Blame; inappropriate conduct; crime; illegal; misdeed; harm; offence; wrong; violation of a Prohibition)
  • عَلَيۡ — Alai — On (= Above; against; before; during; for; over; to; upon)

  • فِىۡ — Fee — In (= About; concerning; in reference, regarding; relative to. The word also means amidst; among; belonging; inside or contained in a duration, event, time, place, period, thing or situation. A/t/a, ‘concerning (the provision for)’ and ‘in respect of’)

  • حَكِيۡمًا‏ — Ha-key-maa — Very Wise (= superlative form indicates the greatest, the highest, the most, and highlights that none more than Him is Exalted in wisdom. Best Possessor of wisdom. Extremely shrewd. Full of wisdom. The Wisest)

Translations With Additions or Subtractions  

 

The translators of the holy scriptures must not add to or subtract from the meanings of the original text even if deemed necessary or by writing explanatory notes.

 

The translations of the Holy Qor-aan by Moslem authors generally abide by this rule and any occasional departure from it can be found an innocent, honest or unintended mistake.

 

But since those who don’t know Arabic also have the right to know what the Holy Qor-aan states, this site provides its simple and straightforward translation and of necessity must point out the errors even if a translator did not knowingly misrepresent the original text.

 

This site selected ten well-respected translations with huge circulation. Full names of the eminent translators are in several of our Commentaries such as The Holy Qor-aan is no Joke, Translations With Grammar Violated and Acknowledgement- 4. Here we chose to state only from their works and to contrast that with our Translation Simple Straightforward.

 

Other kinds of quotes are in Translations with the Authors’ Whims, Different Ideas, Different words or with No Human Assist. Just a few of the Additions or Subtractions are as follows.

 

Two authors translated the word سُنَنٌ (so-na-noon as ways) in verse 003:138 and then added “(and mishaps of life) were faced by nations (believers and disbelievers) that have passed away” although the Holy Qor-aan.had not used any words in its text that correspond to them.

 

Many authors translated verse 002:040 by adding ‘ever-lasting and perpetual’ to the punishment of Hell. But Hell is like a hospital or correction facility intended to clean, purge and improve a sinner until he becomes fit to be admitted to the Paradise. Hell is not the perpetual residence.

 

Two authors translated verse 002:098 by adding “Let him die in his fury” to the text that stated “Whoso has been an enemy to Gabriel.’

 

Two authors translated verse 002:102 by adding “They (the Jews of the Prophet’s time) pursue (the same tactics) which the rebels had followed against the empire of Solomon” to the already highly slanted translation of ‘they’ (= the Satan) as “the Jews of Madinah.”

 

One author translated verse 002:106 by adding “They forget that” to the text that stated “Allah chooses …. (whom) He pleases.”

 

One author translated verse 002:159 by adding “as the pagan custom is” to Oomra (= Pilgrimage to Kaaba performed at times other than the designated Hujj in three days every year).

 

One author translated verse 002:267 by adding helpless children to support to the text that did not state so.

 

Two authors translated the word سَلَفَ (sa-la-fa = has passed) in verse 002:276 by adding that the doers ‘shall not be punished for the past.’

 

Two authors translated the word سَلَفَ (sa-la-fa = has passed) in verses 004:023 and 004:024 by adding “(-you shall not be called to account for what you did in the past, only you have to divorce them now).” Also, this addition supports those who claim that some verses of the Holy Qor-aan have become obsolete as the prior marriage-with-two-sisters custom had ended by the life-span of those who were alive when the Holy Qor-aan was revealed several centuries ago.

 

Several authors translated verse 003:141 by adding contradictions.

  1. The word يَـعۡلَمَ (yau-la-ma = makes known) is a verb in the present tense for a single male in 3rd person and can mean Allah ‘may test,’ ‘may distinguish’ [and] and ’cause to be known.’ But exactly the opposite was translated as ‘Allah may know’ and one in his Note #494 argued that his saying ‘Allah may know’ did not contradict the correct translation.
  2. One author translated this present tense verb into a past tense verb as ‘caused to be distinguished.’
  3. Two authors translated it as a consolation: “If you have received an outer injury (in the battle of Uhud), surely, the (disbelieving) people have already received a similar injury (in the same battle).”
  4. Two authors used it as an assurance: “If a wound (or killing) has touched you, be assured a similar wound (and killing) has touched the others (disbelievers).”

 

Several authors translated verse 003:153 by inserting additions that had no corresponding word in the original text. Some ill effects of their inaccuracies are also detailed in our Commentary Preciseness – Hallmark of the Arabic.

 

Two authors translated verse 004:004 in words that clearly distort the original text, subtract what is disliked, add personal bias, violate international law like Geneva Conventions regarding prisoners of war or taking females prisoners, and fail to differentiate the meanings of the words  تُقۡسِطُوۡاِ  and تَعۡدِلُوۡا used in the verse. The additions made as if necessary explanations are as follows.

“And if (you wish to marry them and) you fear that you will not be able to do justice to the orphan girls then (marry them not, rather) marry of women (other than these) as may be agreeable to you, (you may marry) two or three or four (provided you do justice to them), but if you fear that you will not be able to deal (with all of them) equitably then (confine yourselves only to) one, or (you may marry) that whom your right hands possess (- your female captives of war).”

 

One author translated the words يَقُوۡلُوا قَوۡلًا سَدِيۡدًا  (ya-qoo-loo qao-lun sa-de-daa = they say the right word) in verse 004:010 as “speak for justice” and added further as follows:

  • To those of يَخۡشَ (yukh-sha = fear), he added “take care not to wrong orphans,”
  • To those of  مِنۡ (min = from), he added “after,” and
  • To those of ٱلَّذِينَ  (ul-la-zee-na = those who), he added “those who are solicitous about the welfare of.”

 

Two authors translated verse 004:012 by adding after the word ٱلثُّلُث (tho-luth = one-third) “(and the rest two thirds is for the father).” Such extrapolations of an interpreter’s conjecture may be implied by someone’s unwritten words but they definitely are not justified as a correct and accurate translation of God’s words in the Holy Qor-aan.

 

One author translated verse 004:012 by adding “You may wonder whether” although the Holy Qor-aan has used no words to that effect.

 

One author translated verse 004:013 by adding “only on the mother’s side” though the words brother and sister linguistically mean full as well as half brother and sister.

 

Authors’ translations of verse 004:017 has differed in more than one ways as follows.

  1. The word الَّذٰنِ (ul-la-zaa-nay = , m., 3rd person = those two) has been translated as the ‘two of you,’ ‘two persons (man and woman)’ among you who commit illegal sexual intercourse,’ ‘such of your men,’ ‘two of your males commit the same (act of indecency)   and ‘two men from among you commit indecency.’
  2. The word  تَابَا (taa-baa = repented) was translated cryptically by one author as they ‘should repent,’ but by two others elaborately as ‘they repent (promise Allah that they will never repeat, i.e. commit illegal intercourse and other similar sins.” Also as noted in our commentary Translations With Grammar Violated, they translated this verb in the present tense when the Holy Qor-aan had used this verb in the past tense.
  3. The word اَصۡلَحَا (us-la-haa = reformed) was translated as ‘mend,’ ‘mend their ways,’ ‘amend,’ ‘amend (keeping their conduct good),’ ‘do righteous good deeds,’ ‘improve’ and ‘reform themselves.’ Also as noted in our commentary Translations With Grammar Violated, they translated this verb in the present tense whereas the Holy Qor-aan had used this verb in the past tense)

 

One author translated the word بِ (bay = with) in verse 004:025 as ‘with gifts from your property.’

 

Two authors translated verse 004:025 and added, “(captives in war) whom your right hands possess (are permitted to you for marriage even if not formally divorced by their former husbands, since their captivity is equivalent to divorce).” With those words the authors added in their so-called translation a concept which clearly…

  1. Negates the teachings of the Holy Qor-aan,
  2. Perpetuates the abomination of Slavery,
  3. Violates law and the Geneva Conventions about the rights of prisoners of war, and
  4. Shocks the human decency to its very core.

 

Two authors [mmk, tda] translated verse 055:040 and added ‘as to his sin [because they have already been known from their faces either white (dwellers of Paradise — true believers of Islamic Monotheism) or black (dwellers of Hell — polytheism; disbelievers, criminals)].’

 

The above examples are compiled to just show – as stated in our Commentary Translations With Inaccuracies – the tip of the iceberg of the problem with many translations sold in the market at this time and how the Simple and Straightforward translation on this site differs from them.

Translations With Grammar Violated

 

Translating Arabic by violating the rules of its grammar changes the meanings — diminishing or enhancing the effects, emphasis and thrust of the original message. A unique characteristic of its grammar is its precision shown in our Commentary Preciseness – Hallmark of the Arabic

 

One mistranslation can be a human mistake. Repeated mistakes show a pattern. And repeated patterns duplicated time and again in several works strongly suggest a lack of knowledge. They obviously show that the later translators had blindly and unknowingly copied the predecessorsAs an example See Note 005:086  

 

This site is translating the Holy Qor-aan accurately. It shows inaccuracies in its Commentaries Translations Simply Inaccurate, those Using Different Words, those With Different Ideas and notes such as Note 004:053.

 

Translations violating grammar is inexcusable. Past tense must be translated in the past tense, and a present tense in the present tense. This kind of frequently repeated inaccuracy is shown in Notes to 003:113 (6 times) and 003:136 (5-times) and the following additional examples.

 

The Holy Qor-aan used the words  لَمۡ يَمۡسَسۡنِىۡ  [lum-yum-sus-nee = won’t touch me] in its verse 003:048. Those words in the present participle form show that the stated action is occurring at the present and will keep on occurring in the future, and do not reflect that the action has taken place in the past already. Thus the translations ‘have not touched’ or ‘have not had’ conjugal relations by Muhammad Muhsin Khan and Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali (2001) are inaccurate, and also contrary to and below the piety and virtuous dignity of a Prophet’s mother.

 

The Holy Qor-aan used the word  نُصۡلِيۡ [noos-lee = We will burn] in its verse 004:031 which is a word for the plural and 1st person active voice. But N J Dawood translated it ‘shall be burnt’ which is in singular and 3rd person passive voice. He further repeatedly translated it in the plural what the Holy Qor-aan stated in the singular in verses 004:073, 004:074 and 004:075.

 

The Holy Qor-aan used the verb تَمَنَّوۡنَ [ta-mun-nao-na = wishing] in the verse 003:144 in the present tense but Maulana Muhammad Ali (1917) translated it in the past tense as ‘you desired.’

 

The Holy Qor-aan used two words اَحۡسَنُوۡ  and  اتَّقَوۡا in verse 003:173 in the past tense. It is not accurate to translate them in the present tense. The context also shows that those actions in the past makes more sense as they described a feat accompli, i.e., those who did the good [اَحۡسَنُوۡ] and acted righteously [ اتَّقَوۡا ] had thus deserved to get the great rewardاَجۡرٌ عَظِيۡمٌ ].

 

The Holy Qor-aan used the verb  يَمِيۡزَ  [ya-me-za = distinguishes] in the verse 003:180 in the present tense.. N J Dawood and Marmduke Pickthall translated it correctly as separate but Maulawi Sher Ali Sher Ali and Malik Ghulam Farid translated it in the past tense as separated.

 

The Holy Qor-aan used the following several words in its verse 003:181. Inaccurate translations of nouns as verbs and verbs as nouns by many authors including N J Dawood appear as follows.

  • The word يَبۡخَلُوۡنَ  (yub-kha-loo-na = behave stingy) is a verb but the author translated it as ‘misers’ as if it were a noun.
  • The word اٰتٰ  (aa-taa = gave) is a verb but the author translated it as ‘gifts’ as a noun.
  • The word مِيۡرَاثُ  (me-raa-tho = ownership) is a noun but the author translated it as ‘will inherit’ as if it were a verb.
  • The word تَعۡمَلُوۡنَ  (tau-ma-loo-na = you do) is a verb but the author translated it as ‘all your actions’ as if it were a noun.

 

The Holy Qor-aan used the verb  تَرَكَ  [ta-ra-ka = he left as inheritance] in the past tense in the verses 004:008, 004:012 and 004:013 but many authors translated it as inheritance or legacy which are nouns, and as what the deceased leaves or leave which are verbs in the present tense.

 

The Holy Qor-aan used the verb  تَابَا  [taa-baa = repented] in the verse 004:017 in the past tense but authors A Yusuf Ali, Dr Ahmad Zidan, Muhammad Muhsin Khan, Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali and Muhammad Zafrulla Khan translated it as an act to be done in the future.

 

The Holy Qor-aan used the verb  اَصۡلَحَا  [us-la-haa = reformed] in the verse 004:017 in the past tense. But authors Malik Ghulam Farid, N J Dawood, A Rahman Omar, A Yusuf Ali, Maulana Muhammad Ali, Muhammad Zafrulla Khan, Muhammad Muhsin Khan, Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali, Dr Ahmad Zidan and Marmduke Pickthall translated it as an act to be done in the future.

 

The Holy Qor-aan used the noun  التَّوۡبَةُ  [tao-ba-to = repentance] in the verse 004:018 as a noun but many authors translated it as a verb as follows.

  • ‘Allah accepts the repentance of only those’ – Malik Ghulam Farid (1955)
  • ‘Allah accepts only the repentance’ – M Muhsin Khan, Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali.
  • ‘Allah would accept the repentance’ – Muhammad Zafrulla Khan (1975),
  • ‘Allah undertakes to accept the repentance’ – Maulawi Sher Ali (1955),                   
  • ‘Allah forgives’ – N J Dawood (1916),
  • ‘God accepts the repentance of those who’ – Yusuf Ali (1934); Dr Ahmad Zidan (1991)

 

The Holy Qor-aan used the verbs  حَضَرَ [ha-dza-ra = appeared] and  قَا لَ  [qaa-la = he said} in the verse 004:019 in the past tense but many authors translated them in the present tense,.

 

The Holy Qorr-aan used the verb  اٰتَيۡ  [aa-taiy-to-moo = Gave] in the verse 004:020. It must be translated as ‘gave or ‘had given.’ But its translations in the present tense are less than accurate.

 

The Holy Qor-aan used the verb  يَجۡعَلَ  [yuj-aa-la = turns] in the verse 004:020 in the present tense.. But authors M Marmduke Pickthall, Maulana Muhammad Ali, Maulawi Sher Ali, Malik Ghulam Farid and Muhammad Zafrulla Khan translated it in the past tense as ‘placed.’

 

The Holy Qor-aan used the verb  اَرَدتّ  [aa-rud = intended] in the verse 004:021 in the past tense. But authors M Marmduke Pickthall, Maulana Muhammad Ali, Maulawi Sher Ali, Malik Ghulam Farid and Muhammad Zafrulla Khan translated it in the present tense as ‘desire to take.’

 

The Holy Qor-aan used the verb  يَّقۡتُلُوۡنَ  [yuq-to-loo-na  = they fight] in the verse 005:071 in the present tense. But many authors incorrectly mistranslated it in the past tense as shown in Note 005:071.

 

The Holy Qor-aan used the word  يُؤۡفَكُوۡنَ  [yoe-fa-koo-n = they disregard by deceit] in the verse 005:076 in the present tense. But many authors incorrectly mistranslated it in the past tense as shown in Note 005:076.

 

The Holy Qor-aan used the verb  تُحۡشَرُوۡنَ [toh-sha-roo-n = you will be gathered] in the verse 006:073 using a word pointing towards you in the 2nd person. But the author A Yusuf Ali translated it with the one pointing towards the 1st person as ‘we shall be Gathered together.’

 

The Holy Qor-aan used the pronoun هٖ  [he means His for the singular and 3rd person] in the verse 055:046 but the flagrant mistranslations in the plural as ‘their’ by author A Yusuf Ali and in the 2nd person as ‘you’ by  author A Rahman Omar are just not excusable

.

The Holy Qor-aan has used the words نَفۡسًا …. كَسَبَتۡ فِىۡۤ اِيۡمَانِهَا in its verse 006:159. The words mean ”she, the soul, earned what is in her Belief .” The pronoun  هَا obviously refers to its subject  نَفۡسًا  which means soul. This must be translated as ‘her’ or ‘its’ like authors Marmaduke Pickthall and Malik Ghulam Farid did. It was wrong to have translated that as ‘his’ like authors M Zafrulla Khan and A Rahhman Omar have done.

 

Wikipedia states that one early translation had “blatant inaccuracies,” one by Alexander Ross (1649) was from a French work, and one by George Sale (1734) had “a number of mistakes of mistranslation and misinterpretation, which brings into question their primary aim.”

Inaccurate translation so rampant and enormous makes one wonder if the authors knew the rules of Arabic Grammar or their mistranslations they flooded in this multi-million dollar market.

Prohibited on you for marriage are your mothers, and you daughters,                And you sisters, and your fathers’ sisters, and your mothers’ sisters,                    And daughters of the brother, and daughters of the sister,                                         And your mothers who had breast-fed you,                                                                        And your sisters from the process of breast-feeding,                                                    And mothers of your wives,

And your step-daughters who are in your guardianship                                          From among those of your women in whom you have entered,                                But if you have not entered them                                                                                      Then there is no sin on you,

And the wives your sons who are from your spines,                                                      And that you assemble two sisters except what has passed.                              Certainly Allah has always been Most Forgiving, Most Merciful

وَ كَيۡفَ تَاۡخُذُوۡنَهٗ وَقَدۡ اَفۡضٰى بَعۡضُكُمۡ اِلٰى بَعۡضٍ وَّاَخَذۡنَ مِنۡكُمۡ مِّيۡثَاقًا غَلِيۡظًا

 

Wa-kai-fa-tau-kho-zoo-na-hoo-wa-qud-uf-dzaa                                                                            Bau-dzo-koom-elaa-bau-dzin-wa                                                                                                        Aa-khuz-na-min-koom-me-thaa-qun-gha-lee-zaa

 

And how could you take it back and surely                                                                        Some of you had benefited from the other and                                                          They (the wives) took from you a Pledge

وَاِنۡ اَرَدتُّمُ اسۡتِبۡدَالَ زَوۡجٍ مَّكَانَ زَوۡجٍ ۙ  وَّاٰتَيۡتُمۡ اِحۡدٰٮهُنَّ قِنۡطَارًا فَلَا تَاۡخُذُوۡا مِنۡهُ شَيۡـــًٔا‌ ؕ   اَ تَاۡخُذُوۡنَهٗ بُهۡتَانًا وَّاِثۡمًا مُّبِيۡنًا

 

Wa  in  aa-raud  to-mo  os-tib-daa-la  zao-jin  ma-kaa-na  zao-jin                                            Wa  aa-tai  toom  aih-daa  hoon-na  qin-taa-raun                                                                          Fa  laa  tau-kho-zoo  min  ho  shai-aa                                                                                                Aa  tau-kho-zoo-na  hoo  boh-taa-naun  wa  ith-maun  mo-be-naa

 

And if you have intended to change a wife in place of a wife                                      And you had given to one of them a heap of gold                                                    Then do not take back from it anything.                                                                            Will you take it back as a false promise and obvious sin?

يٰۤـاَيُّهَا الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا لَا يَحِلُّ لَـكُمۡ اَنۡ تَرِثُوا النِّسَآءَ كَرۡهًا‌ ؕ  وَلَا تَعۡضُلُوۡهُنَّ لِتَذۡهَبُوۡا بِبَعۡضِ مَاۤ اٰتَيۡتُمُوۡهُنَّ اِلَّاۤ اَنۡ يَّاۡتِيۡنَ بِفَاحِشَةٍ مُّبَيِّنَةٍ‌ ۚ  وَعَاشِرُوۡهُنَّ بِالۡمَعۡرُوۡفِ‌ ۚ  فَاِنۡ كَرِهۡتُمُوۡهُنَّ فَعَسٰۤى اَنۡ تَكۡرَهُوۡا شَيۡــًٔـا وَّيَجۡعَلَ اللّٰهُ فِيۡهِ خَيۡرًا كَثِيۡرًا‏

Listen, those who have believed!                                                                                            Not allowed for you is                                                                                                          That you forcibly inherit women.

And do not coerce them to take away some of                                                                  That you gave them unless they come                                                                                  With a glaring lewdness.

And live with them gracefully.                                                                                                And if you abhor them, then it’s possible                                                                          That you loathe something but                                                                                        Allah makes in it a lot of good.   • اِنۡ —  In — If (= In case; under the circumstances; when; whenever. A/t/a, ‘even if’)
  • كَرِهۡتُمُو — Ka-raih-to-moo — You abhor (= v., pres., m., pl., 2nd person. The Holy Qor-aan used this word to reflect extreme hate and so we have translated it with the strongest available word abhor. Also, hate, disapprove; loathe. Feel or find disgusting,  loathsome, non-palatable, repugnant, tasteless, troublesome, unacceptable, undesired, unpleasant or unwanted. A/t/a, ‘you do not love them,’ ‘are averse to,’ ‘dislike’ and ‘take a dislike to)
  • هُنَّ — Hoon-na — Them (= pl, f, in 3rd person. Women. Reference is to the wives)
  • فَ — Fa — Then (= Hence; so; thus; finally; therefore. See فَ  above)
  • عَسٰۤى — Aa-saa — Possible (= It could happen; quite close; very near. A/t/a, ‘it may be’)
  •  اَنۡ — Un — That — (= Also, absolutely; certainly; definitely; positively; verily
  • تَكۡرَهُوۡا — Tuk-ra-hoo — You loathe (= v., pres., m., pl., 2nd person. Abhor; disapprove; dislike; hate; loathe. See كَرِهۡتُمُو above)
  • شَيۡـــًٔا‌ — Shai-aa — Anything at all (= Anything at all however little or insignificant. A whit. Not the least. Smallest part of an article, item, object, material, thing, matter, type, phenomenon or stuff. To the least extent. Also, Some, something or somewhat.
  •  وَّ —  Wa — But (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • يَجۡعَلَ — Yuj-aa-la(ul) — Makes (= v., pres., s., 3rd person. Appoints; brings out, causes, converts, creates; directs, grants, makes, places, renders, sets up; turns up; wills. See Note 002:031.  A/t/a, ‘assign’ or ‘designs to assign’)A/t/a, ‘has placed’ or ‘has meant’ are inaccurate translations for they are in the past tense when the Holy Qor-aan has used the verb in the present tense)
  • اللّٰهُ — Laa-ho — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
  • فِىۡ — Fee — In (= About; concerning; in reference, regarding; relative to)
  • هِ — Hay — It (= pro., s., m; 3rd person., thing or article stated earlier)
  • خَيۡرًا — Khai-run — Good (= n., s., Happier and more pleasant occasions, persons, results and things. Also, comparatively superior; of greater, higher or more value)
  • كَثِيرً۬ا — Ka-thee-raa — A lot (= Adj., Abundant. Ample. Bigger, greater or larger in number. Good deal. Great favor. Much more. Of exceeding quality and quantity. Of several times higher height. Plump. Plentiful. Without cease. Without stint. Also, the word refers to any multitude, overflowing, repeated or repetitious goodness. A/t/a, ‘much,’ ‘good deal of’ and, ‘for your own.’  The last ten words have also been translated as ‘ye dislike a thing, and God brings about through it a  great deal of good,’ ‘you may be averse to a thing, and God brings about from it much good’ and ‘you dislike a thing through which Allah brings a great deal of good’)

 

** Note 004:020. Another plausible translation is as follows.

And do not coerce them to take away part of                                                                    What you gave them unless they come                                                                          With a glaring lewdness                                                                                                          But live with them gracefully.

And if you abhor them, then it’s possible                                                                      That you abhor something but                                                                                            Allah turns it into plump good.

The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                                     004:019

 

وَلَيۡسَتِ التَّوۡبَةُ لِلَّذِيۡنَ يَعۡمَلُوۡنَ السَّيِّاٰتِ‌ ۚ  حَتّٰۤى اِذَا حَضَرَ اَحَدَهُمُ الۡمَوۡتُ قَالَ اِنِّىۡ تُبۡتُ الۡـــٰٔنَ وَلَا الَّذِيۡنَ يَمُوۡتُوۡنَ وَهُمۡ كُفَّارٌ ‌ؕ  اُولٰٓٮِٕكَ اَعۡتَدۡنَا لَهُمۡ عَذَابًا اَ لِيۡمًا‏

 

Wa-lai-sa-tit-tao-ba-ta-lil-la-ze-na-yau-ma-loo-nus-suy-yay-aa-tay                                      Hut-taa-ezaa-ha-dza-ra-aa-ha-da-ho-mool-mao-to                                                                      Qaa-la-in-nee-toob-tool-aa-na                                                                                                          Wa-lul-la-ze-na-ya-moo-too-na-wa-hoom-koof-faa-roon                                                            Olaa-aiy-ka-au-tud-na-la-hoomazaa-bun-alee-maa

 

And turn in repentance is not for those who keep doing the evil                          Until when the death has come to one of them                                                                  He said, ‘Now certainly I turn repentant.”                                                                          And nor for those who die and they are disbelievers.                                                    They all are for whom We have prepared a painful punishment

  • لَيۡسَتِ — Lai-sa-t(i) — Not (= Absolute denial; never; not at all; total negation. A/t/a, ‘of no effect,’ ‘is of no avail,’ ‘is not for’ and ‘Allah will not forgive’)
  • التَّوۡبَةُ — Tao-ba-to — Turn in repentance (= n., Asking for forgiveness; expressing regret, remorse and repentance; turning in penitence. A/t/a, as ‘acceptance of repentance’ and ‘forgiveness.’ See also Note  002:038 and 004:018)
  • لِلۡ — L…(il) — For (= Concerning, regarding; relative to; intended for. A/t/a, ‘of’)
  • ٱلَّذِينَ — La-ze-na..(us) — Those who (= pl., m, 3rd person. Refers to those in masculine gender that include all articles, things, persons or phenomenon
  • يَعۡمَلُون — Yau-ma-loo-n(us) — Keep doing (= v., pres., pl., m., 3 rd person. Act; commit; perform; practice; render. A/t/a, ‘continue to do evil,’ ‘continue,’ ‘go on doing’ and ‘who do evil all their lives’)
  •  السَّيِّاٰ تِ‌ — Suy-yay-aa-tay — The evil (= n., pl., Bad or evil consequences, results or things. Stains of bad acts, crimes, errors, sins and wrongs. Ill deeds. Illegalities. Iniquities. Misdeeds. Mistakes. Occurrence of wrongs done accidentally or forgetfully without much premeditated intention. Vices. A/t/a ‘evil deeds’ and ‘evil courses’)
  • حَتّٰى — Hut-ta — Until (= By the end of the period or term; till the time)
  • اِذَاۤ — Ezaa — When (= At the time or event; now that; whenever)
  • حَضَرَ — Ha-dza-ra — Has come to (= v., past, s, 3rd person. Appeared; arrived. Manifested. Occurred. Presented. Reached.  A/t/a, ‘comes,’ ‘faces,’ ‘attendeth upon’ and ‘visits’ but such translations are inaccurate because they are in the present tense verb whereas the Holy Qor-aan has used this verb in the past tense)
  • اَحَدَ — Aa-ha-da — One (= n., Individual; single)
  • هُمُ — Ho-mo..(ol) — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3 rd person. Refers to aforesaid people)
  • الۡمَوۡتُ — (Ol)-mao-to — Death (= n., After life has ended; downfall; end of life on earth; extinction; stupor. Total desolateness, demolition, destruction or ruin)
  • قَا لَ — Qaa-la — He said (= v., past, s., m., 3rd person. Announced; begged; called; claimed; conveyed; declared; explained; informed; insisted; maintained; professed; stated. Also, argued; asserted; contended; objected; protested.  A/t/a, ‘says,’ ‘saith,’  ‘say’ and ‘exclaims,’ but they all are inaccurate because they are in a verb in the present tense whereas the Holy Qor-aan has used the verb in the past tense)
  • اِنِّىۡ — In-nee — Certainly I (= Combination of two words. The 1st word  اِنۡ  (in) means  absolutely, clearly, decidedly, doubtlessly, positively, indeed, really, surely, truly or verily. The 2nd word ىۡ  is the pronoun for one in 1st person)
  •  تُبۡتُ — Toob-to — I turn repentant (= v., past., s., m & f, 1st person. Asked for forgiveness; turned in penitence; turned to Allah expressing regret, remorse and repentance)
  • الۡـــٰٔنَ — Ul-aa-na — Now (= At this time; at this point; at this juncture. A/t/a, ‘now… indeed’ and ‘indeed…now’)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • لَا — Laa — Not (= Naught; neither; never; none; nor; not at all; absolute denial and total negation without exception. A/t/a, ‘nor it is of any use to,’ ‘nor yet for’ and ‘nor will he forgive’)
  • ٱلَّذِينَ — Ul-la-zee-na — Those who (= pl., m, 3rd person. Refers to those in masculine gender that include all articles, things, persons or phenomenon)
  • يَمُوۡتُوۡنَ — Ya-moo-to-na — They Die (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. Are at the end of life)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above. A/t/a, ‘while’  and ‘whilst’)
  • هُمۡ‌ — Hoom — They (= pro., pl., m., 3 rd person. Refers to the doers of evil)
  • كُفَّارٌ — Koof-faa-roon — Disbelievers (= n., pl., superlative. Those who really and truly… abuse, deny, fail, misuse, reject or refuse to appreciate, thank, use or utilize any God-given ability, blessing, capacity, capability or opportunity afforded and talent endowed. Who denied, refused or rejected the Faith, belief in Allah, the Holy Qor-aan, Islaam and become a Moslem. Who are blasphemers, faithless, heretic, impious, infidels, ingrates, non-believers, renegades, resistors, thankless, unbeliever or ungrateful. A/t/a, ‘Rejecting Faith’)
  • اُولٰٓٮِٕكَ —  O-laa-aiy-ka — They all (= Aforesaid facts, persons or things. Here the reference is to the said folks, people; sinner; wrong-doers. A/t/a, ‘It is these’ and ‘for such’)
  • اَعۡتَدۡ — Au-tud — Prepared (= v., pres., 1st person. Arranged; got ready; organized; primed; readied; set up)
  • نَآ  — Naa — We (= pro., pl., 1st person. Us. Used with God’s name it is the authoritative way a higher-up talks to a subordinate)
  • لَ — La — For (= Concerning; intended for; regarding; relative to)
  • هُمۡ‌ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3 rd person. Refers to the disbelievers.  A/t/a, ‘such people’)
  • عَذَابًا — Azaa-bun — Punishment (= Appropriate, due and fair agony, chastisement, doom, hard task, penalty, recompense; torment or torture. A/t/a, ‘scourge’)
  • اَ لِيۡمًا — Alee-maa — Painful (= Adj., Grave; grievous; painful; stern; sever. A/t/a, woeful,’ ‘most painful’ and ‘most grievous’)
