اَلرِّجَالُ قَوَّامُوۡنَ عَلَى النِّسَآءِ بِمَا فَضَّلَ اللّٰهُ بَعۡضَهُمۡ عَلٰى بَعۡضٍ وَّبِمَاۤ اَنۡفَقُوۡا مِنۡ اَمۡوَالِهِمۡ‌ ؕ فَالصّٰلِحٰتُ قٰنِتٰتٌ حٰفِظٰتٌ لِّلۡغَيۡبِ بِمَا حَفِظَ اللّٰهُ‌ ؕ وَالّٰتِىۡ تَخَافُوۡنَ نُشُوۡزَهُنَّ فَعِظُوۡهُنَّ وَاهۡجُرُوۡهُنَّ فِى الۡمَضَاجِعِ وَاضۡرِبُوۡهُنَّ‌ ۚ فَاِنۡ اَطَعۡنَكُمۡ فَلَا تَبۡغُوۡا عَلَيۡهِنَّ سَبِيۡلًا‌ ؕاِنَّ اللّٰهَ كَانَ عَلِيًّا كَبِيۡرًا

Wa  bay-maa  aun-fa-qoo  min  aum-waa-lay  him

Fa  us-saa-lay-haa-to  qaa-nay-taa-toon
Haa-fay-zaa-toon  lay  l-ghai-bay  bay-maa  ha-fay-za  ul-laa-ho
Wa  ul-laa-tee  ta-khaa-foo-na  na-shoo-za  hoon-na
Fa  aiy-zoo  hoon-na  wa  uh-jo-roo  hoon-na  fee  il-ma-zaa-jay-aiy
Wa  udz-ray-boo  hoon-na

Fa  in  aa-tau-na  koom
Fa  laa  taub-ta-ghoo  aa-lai  hin-na  sa-be-laa
In-na  ul-laa-ha  kaa-na  aa-lee-yaun  ka-be-raa

 

Men are burdened over and above women
Because Allah has blessed some of them (men) over others
And because they (men) spent from their assets.  

So the righteous women are the Content women,
Protectors of the unseen because Allah entrusted them to keep secret.
And those women you fear their defiance
Then you advise them and depart from them in the beds.
And you improve them.

So, if they follow you
Then take no action on them.
Indeed Allah has always been the Highest, the Greatest.

A/t/a, ‘because’ and ‘because of that in respect of which’)
  • فَضَّلَ — Faudz-dza-la … (ul) — Blessed (= v., past., s., 3rd person. Benefited; bestowed; conferred; empowered; endowed; gave; granted; gifted; ‘preferred by being given abundance or plenteousness. A/t/a, ‘made … excel,’ ‘given the one more strength than the other’ and ‘made superior’)

  •  حٰفِظٰتٌ — Haa-fay-zaa-toon — Protectors (= n., pl., f. Women who are protecting and saving their family concerns, issues, matters or secrets. This divine  command laid down in the 7th Century A.D. is the same as the Legal Doctrine of Spousal Privilege that today disallows one spouse to testify against the other unless the other has first allowed that by express permission or implied conduct. A/t/a, ‘safeguard’ and ‘guard’ but such verbs are no translations of the noun in the Holy Qor-aan text)

Refers to the non-public matters, realities or situations of the family and matrimonial life.   • عَلِيًّا — Ali-yaun — The Highest (= superlative form indicates the greatest, the tops, the supreme, the uppermost, and highlights none more than Him is above. Above all anyone can imagine. A/t/a, ‘ever’ Exalted’ and ‘ever High Exalted’)
  • كَبِيۡرًا — Ka-be-raa — The Greatest  (= superlative form indicates the Best, the Supreme, the Utmost, and highlights that none more than Him is Greater. Greater than anyone can imagination. A/t/a, ‘Great,’ ‘the Great, above you all’ and ‘Most Great’)

 

** Note 004:035. The word اضۡرِبُو (audz-ray-boo) has many meanings.

  1. Contextually it means to improve wife to realize, recognize and respect the essence of the Commandment stated in the first four words of this verse.
  2. Professionally it means to strike a valuable coin from any metal or cut a priceless diamond from an ordinary-looking stone.
  3. Maliciously and violently as when fighting with enemy it can mean beat, bang, crash, thrash, censure, chastise, discipline, harm, insult, pound, punch, punish, rebuke, reprimand, reprove, scourge, tell off, etc.
  4. Inaccurately as done by several translators of who some are mentioned above.

Almost every translation on the market we have seen has drawn the ugliest malicious, malevolent and militant meanings of this verse. Except for the one mentioned below, they all directly contradict the Commandment in 002:230 that mandates that a wife must be kept in a becoming manner implying with love, respect and tender care or sent away with kindness.

The accurate explanation of the opening words  اَلرِّجَالُ قَوَّامُوۡنَ عَلَى النِّسَآءِ  of this verse is that ’men must mend masters’ i.e., themselves before attempting to mend others and women. The founder of the Ahmadiyya community Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, a.s., explained this concept clearly and at length. Many sensible persons practice that proper phenomenon in their lives.

This site maintains that every inaccurate translation with different meanings being  currently marketed must be rejected on this short ground.

In 1990’s about twenty pious men attended an interactive daurs (discussion) of the Holy Qor-aan) after the Fajr (morning) prayer in a Philadelphia mosque. When asked if they (a) had lived with their wives long enough to become grandparents, (b) had enjoyed at home peace by respecting wives’ total autonomy in domestics and (c) had wives who recognized and respected their rights, obligations and duties out of homes. By show of hands they replied yes and deserve  every compliment for being the living examples and showing true meanings of this verse.

Some interpreters have claimed authority to label some verses of the Holy Qor-aan as abrogated because in their mind they thought it contradicted other verses. Our Commentaries Abrogation Theory and Islam and Sect Recognition clearly show why everyone of such claims is unjustified, unwarranted and uncalled for.

   Chapter 05 – EDUCATION

School

Father learnt at a very early age what education can do for a man. He was an industrious student whom his teachers admired for his academic scores. He breezed through local schools. He graduated from College with Honors. He attended Punjab University Law College. I believe he was the first Law Graduate in the Buttar clan of his twin village Kirto-Pandori.

He seeded his village by showing what an ordinary farmer’s son could achieve by education  (Ch 02 – Best). He was the pioneer whose greatness lies in not just being the first to have achieved what he did, but also in how he lit up the area where he came from.

He became the lighthouse that dispelled the darkness around his village and could dwarf the fabled McCoy and Hatfield feuds of USA. His lead was followed by others where education became the most sought-after thing instead of the previous passion for feudalism.

He led the district that has since produced elites in practically every walk of life. It has become easy for me to look back and see how the Buttars came forward and shined in the fields of law and judiciary, police and military, commerce and communications, medicine and teaching.

Lawyer

Father practiced law as an Attorney for a short while. He was one of the earliest, if not the very first, of the Buttar lawyers. But his thirst for temporal and spiritual knowledge and personal and professional growth remained unquenchable. Doctors in his progeny include one son, one son-in-law, 8 grandchildren with two married to Drs, and 5 great grandchildren, some married to Drs.

His progeny so far has had six practicing lawyers and two more law graduates who took jobs with international businesses. On-line shows a great number of Buttar lawyers representing various political parties and contesting elections. His cousins both close and distant raised their kids to become District & Sessions Judges and one even a Judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

Father became Ahmadi. He was of the group that had many highly religious leaders and  brilliantly successful lawyers. Some like Ch: Bashir Ahmad, Ch: Aziz Ahmad Bajwa and Mahr Sher M Sial reached up to be District & Sessions Judges. Sir Zafrullah Khan translated the Holy Qor-aan in English and became a Judge of the International Court of Justice at the Hague.

Continued education

The Holy Prophet, s.a.w., had with him a Complete Code (005:004), also known as the Holy Qor-aan. Yet a Hadeeth says that he urged people to get knowledge even if they had to crawl to China. China at that time was the center of worldly knowledges of math, medicine, geography, law, etc. Father followed that instruction to the letter and got the best worldly education as well.

Father knew that education in spiritual and worldly arenas complemented each other. He continually added to his knowledge and that of his family, his village and the visitors he saw. He was the lightening rod who was determined to improve the life of anyone who ever came close. He showed by his own example that education transformed the life of all individuals and families. He urged his immediate and larger family to continually acquire spiritual and temporal education. He life story illuminates that the road that the Best Exemplar, s.a.w., set down was the best to follow.

Father rose with education. He continued learning all his life. He was a Shiite when growing up but learnt of and joined the Ahmadiyya sect after real research. He believed that real education was learning and practicing all that was laid in the Holy Qor-aan. He practiced the teachings of Iss-laam that everyone was rewarded for his own acts and worships. He learnt that knowledge leads to Truth. He used education to spread it. He followed the Truth wherever it went.

Judge

Father passed the Punjab Civil Service competitive examination under the British Rule of India around 1930. He became a Judge and served in the Judiciary all his life. But his passion was the religious service (See Tr – Azam Ali, an Ahmadi Moslem, as seen by Daughter). He offered his advice, shared his knowledge, promised to pray and helped all who asked for it.

He as a Judge considered the precedents quoted at the Bar studiously. He read judgments that lawyers presented in his court as an opportunity to advance in knowledge. But if he found a bad precedent based upon an erroneous judgment, he refused to follow it. He was not of a judiciary that rubber-stamped bad law. He dissented and showed with reasons how the judgment was wrong.

He considered his duty to correct wrong decisions, particularly about the Moslem Law even during the days of British Rule in India. One such case was  where an erroneous judgment was passed by the Privy Council, which was the highest judicial entity located in England. That precedent-setting Authority had failed to distinguish the Moslem Law — the term in the Holy Qor-aan (004:012) Arabic translated into Persian language as Aulaad-e-Dukhteri — from another Persian phrase Aulaad-e-Dukhter.  Father pioneered in the reversal of that bad precedent. (See Tr – Azam Ali, an Ahmadi Moslem – Ch 11 – Knowledge).

Father corrected others’ perception about Islam by Tubleegh, the process like evangelism. He memorized long portions of the Holy Qor-aan and presented real Iss-laam while others who held positions like him just did their jobs, raised families and accumulated money.

Invitations from abroad

From what I know, twice he was offered jobs overseas that he thankfully declined.

The first was around 1948. He received the offer via Pakistani High Court. The offer was to accept Judgeship in the High Court of Sudan. Father in accordance with his life-long practice of following the Holy Prophet, s.a.w., did the Istikhara. With a clear conscience he declined the offer. He told us that he did not know how much control he would have in Sudan over his environment to shape the future of his children as he could do in Pakistan that he knew full well.

It is not that Abba Ji was a control freak. He encouraged his children to follow their instincts. His eldest son became a lawyer. His youngest son became a physician. One son chose business. Another son served people in need. He educated his daughters the best in following a Hadeeth of the Holy Prophet, s.a.w. His eldest daughter obtained a master’s degree in geography. His youngest daughter got a master’s degree and taught Statistics at Punjab University as a professor. Another daughter earned a master’s degree and another daughter a bachelor’s degree. What father wanted the most was that they were Practicing Moslems as Ahmadi. He succeeded in his mission as they all followed him, though to varying degrees as ordained by Allah.

The second time was around 1970. During his pilgrimage (See 5 Acts of worships or pillars of Islam) to Mecca he met the top brass of some African nation. He was offered to go to the African country and dispense justice the Moslem way. Father thanked the offeror and declined. He reasoned that his own age and the language of the offeror’s countrymen stood in the way.

Marriage

Father was married for the first time around 1931 to Amina ( امينه ) Begum, a daughter of Ch: Sultan Ahmad Kahlon, a lawyer (I think) in Sialkot. Father noticed soon after marriage that his bride’s educational levels and health conditions would hamper raising a family as he envisioned. (Tr – Azam Ali, an Ahmadi Moslem, as seen by Daughter)

Father knew that his education could go only so far, spiritual studies at home were the start, and a wife on his wavelength could advance his children’s education a lot more. Father informed Khaleefatool Massih II, r.a. of his matrimonial dilemma and a 2nd marriage was decided.

Father’s prayers and efforts eventually got him blessed with a wife who diligently worked like him. A missionary of Ahmadiyya sect suggested that the burqa-wearing tall daughter of a Police Officer Ch: Faqir Mohammad suited my father. An initial protest by her father that the said daughter was barely 15 was quickly withdrawn. And my mother was married to my father.

Father’s 2nd marriage was in 1933 to Sakina ( سَکِيۡنَةٌ  ) Begum. She was a daughter of Ch: Faqir Mohammad of Waraich family of Gujrat. She was our mother. She lived her life true to her name. The word Sakina is often used in the Holy Qor-aan such as the following.

    Sa-kee-na-toon     سُوۡرَةُ البَقَرَة  –  Ch:2, Verse 249  &  سُوۡرَةُ الفَتْح – Ch 48, Verses 005 & 019 Peace. Contentment. Satisfaction. Serenity. Security. Tranquility. 002:249  

Ammi Ji brought peace of mind and tranquility to the life of Abba Ji. She proved an excellent partner in his goal to raise educated spiritual members of the human village. She was 15 when married.  She gave birth to nine (9) children and passed away in 10th pregnancy when hardly 30.

Ammi Ji sacrificed for her father her education beyond high school. She sacrificed for her religion all that a teenager views in a privileged life ahead. She sacrificed for her children her own comforts for 14 years of married life that were totally spent in schooling, reading to, washing, dressing, and sowing, knitting and cooking for them. We numbered seven (7) 1-to-13 years old when she died (See Tr – Azam Ali, an Ahmadi Moslem – Ch 3 – Coach). She sacrificed her life for her husband who wanted many educated children practicing Islam. She was a sacrifice personified.

Ammi Ji’s death made my Father aware of the toll that childbearing takes on a woman’s body. So much so that when our second son was born barely 1 year after our first son, Father told me to slow down because he wanted to save us from what he had lost by the death of his dear wife.

Coincidence

And years later came from the Malik family of Multan another lady with the same name Sakina, married Chaudhry M Anwar Buttar with the same family name, of the same village Kirto and raised the same number of six children who are grandparents raising educated families.

  • Whether introduced, influenced or just inspired by Father’s progress via education, that Buttar side encouraged their bright star to trudge along on the pathway of knowledge. After completing his education M Anwar Buttar rose to a high office on the Railways. Later he moved  over to law. As an Advocate of the Pakistan Supreme Court and High Courts he contributed to the judiciary hundreds of precedent-setting judgments.
  • Their eldest lawyer son passed LLM in England and rose to be a Judge of the Pakistan Supreme Court. The next son is lawyer who also passed LLM in England and is an internationally recognized, renowned and rewarded lawyer in Australia. The youngest son retired as a Pakistan Army Brigadier. The oldest daughter married a lawyer who retired as Attorney General. The two youngest daughters are Doctors practicing medicine in USA.

Next generation

            Father knew from his experience that leaving a good student in Almighty God’s care with a limited freedom from parental restrictions to make independent choices had helped him grow in education, profession and life. He knew what education does and passed that benefit to children. I benefitted beyond measure (See Tr – Azam Ali, an Ahmadi Moslem – Ch 19 – Son’s  Education). We learnt from him to memorize, repeat, and work continually in accordance with the words of the prayer like the following.

                    Rub-bay  zid  nee  il-ma                                     سُوۡرَةُ طٰه    –  Ch 20, Verse 115                     God add to my knowledge                                                      020:115

Father made sure that our actions conformed to our spoken words both in prayers and life. He inculcated in us what he had himself learnt and practiced all his life. To him the truth in talking had to be like an oath on a Scripture. He lived his life that way. He trained us the same.

وَلِكُلٍّ جَعَلۡنَا مَوَالِىَ مِمَّا تَرَكَ الۡوَالِدٰنِ وَالۡاَقۡرَبُوۡنَ‌ ؕ  وَالَّذِيۡنَ عَقَدَتۡ اَيۡمَانُكُمۡ فَاٰ تُوۡهُمۡ نَصِيۡبَهُمۡ‌ؕ  اِنَّ اللّٰهَ كَانَ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَىۡءٍ شَهِيۡدًا ۙ‏

 

Wa-lay-kool-lin-ja-ul-naa-ma-waa-lay-ya                                                                                      Mim-maa-ta-ra-kul-waa-lay-dai-nay-wul-uq-ra-boo-na                                                            Wul-la-ze-na-aa-qa-dut-ai-maa-no-koom                                                                                        Fa-aa-too-hoom-na-se-ba-hoom                                                                                                          In-nul-laa-ha-kaa-na-alaa-kool-lay-shai-in-sha-he-daa

 

And for everyone We have set up heirs                                                                                Out of what the parents and close relatives left behind,                                                And those your right hands tied in contracts,                                                                  Give them their part.                                                                                                            Allah has always been a witness to everything.

A/t/a, accurate translation ‘left.’  However, inaccurate translation is ‘leave behind’ and ‘leave’ because that is a verb in the  present tense when the Holy Qor-aan has used a verb in the past tense)

  • شَهِيۡدًا — Sha-hee-da — Witness (= n., s., Attester, observer, onlooker, testifier, verifier,  watch, watcher or witness. Adducer of proof. Bearer, giver or provider of evidence or testimony. Producer of corroboration. Also, a helper, seer or supporter. See Note to 004:070. A/t/a, ‘ever Witness,’ ‘Ever a witness over all things’ and ‘is ever a witness.’  However, ‘bears witness,’ ‘watches over all things’ and ‘watches’ are translations as verbs and so inaccurate translations of what the Holy Qor-aan has stated as a noun)

وَلَا تَتَمَنَّوۡا مَا فَضَّلَ اللّٰهُ بِهٖ بَعۡضَكُمۡ عَلٰى بَعۡضٍ‌ ؕ لِلرِّجَالِ نَصِيۡبٌ مِّمَّا اكۡتَسَبُوۡا ؕ‌  وَلِلنِّسَآءِ نَصِيۡبٌ مِّمَّا اكۡتَسَبۡنَ‌ ؕ  وَسۡئَـلُوا اللّٰهَ مِنۡ فَضۡلِهٖ ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ كَانَ بِكُلِّ شَىۡءٍ عَلِيۡمًا‏

 

Wa-laa-ta-ta-mun-nao-maa-fudz-dzal-laa-ho-bay-he                                                                Bau-dzo-koom-alaa-bau-dzin                                                                                                            Lir-ray-jaa-lay-na-see-boom-mim-muk-ta-sa-boo-wa                                                              Lin-nay-saa-aiy-na-see-boom-mim-muk-ta-sub-na                                                                    Wus-aa-lool-laa-ha-min-fudz-lay-he                                                                                                  In-nul-laa-ha-bay-kool-lay-shai-in-alee-maa

 

And do not feel jealous for what Allah has blessed                                                    Some of you over some others.                                                                                                For men is a share out of what they have earned and                                                    For women is a share out of what they have earned.                                                      And you ask Allah from His abundance.                                                                              Allah has always been All-Knowing of everything.

In-tuj-ta-nay-boo-ka-baa-aiy-ra-maa-tun-hao-na-un-ho                                                            No-kuf-fer-un-koom-suy-yay-aa-tay-koom-wa                                                                              Nood-khil-koom-mood-kha-lun-ka-re-maa

 

If you avoid the biggies from it you are forbidden                                                      We will remove from you the evil consequences and                                                      We will enter you with an honorable entry

Wa-mun-yuf-ul-zaa-lay-ka-ood-waa-nun-wa-zool-mun                                                              Fa-sao-fa-noos-le-hay-naa-raa                                                                                                          Wa-kaa-na-zaa-lay-ka-alul-laa-hay-ya-see-raa

 

And whoever does that inimically and wrongfully                                                          Is that We will soon burn him in Fire                                                                                    And that has always been very easy for Allah

يٰۤـاَيُّهَا الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا لَا تَاۡكُلُوۡۤا اَمۡوَالَـكُمۡ بَيۡنَكُمۡ بِالۡبَاطِلِ اِلَّاۤ اَنۡ تَكُوۡنَ تِجَارَةً عَنۡ تَرَاضٍ مِّنۡكُمۡ‌ وَلَا تَقۡتُلُوۡۤا اَنۡـفُسَكُمۡ‌ؕ  اِنَّ اللّٰهَ كَانَ بِكُمۡ رَحِيۡمًا

 

Yaa-auy-yo-hul-la-zee-na-aa-ma-noo                                                                                          Laa-tau-ko-loo-um-waa-la-koom                                                                                                  Bai-na-koom-bil-baa-tay-lay                                                                                                          Ill-aa-un-ta-koo-na-tay-jaa-ra-ton                                                                                                    Un-ta-raa-zin-min-koom                                                                                                                      Wa-laa-tuq-to-loo-un-fo-sa-koom                                                                                                      In-nul-laa-ha-bay-koom-ra-he-maa

 

Listen, you all who have believed!                                                                                      You do not eat up your assets                                                                                                Among yourselves with falsehood.                                                                                  The exception is if it has been a trade                                                                              By negotiated settlement from you.                                                                                 And do not ruin yourselves.                                                                                                Certainly Allah has been very Merciful to you.         

 

The Holy Qor-aan has used the Phrase Yaa-auy-yo-hul-la-zee-na-aa-ma-noo many times

  • يٰۤ — Yaa — Listen (= Be attentive; hearken; pay attention; O!)
  • اَيُّهَا — Auy-yo-ha(ul) — You all (= All addressees; entire audience; whole lot of listeners)
  • ٱلَّذِينَ — Ul-la-zee-na — Those who (= pl., m, 3rd person. Those articles, things or persons
  • اٰمَنُوۡۤ — Aa-ma-noo — They Believed (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Believed in the Holy Qor-aan; became Moslems. Accepted, acknowledged, admitted or witnessed their entry in Iss-laam. See Commentaries like Islam – 101Phrase Aa-ma-noo-wa-aa-may-loos … and Believe and Disbelieve that floodlight other aspects how the Holy Qor-aan has used this word)
  • لَا — Laa — Do not (= Absolute denial; never; not at all; total negation)
  • تَاۡكُلُوۡٓا — Tau-ko-loo — You eat up (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Consume; devour; partake; swallow; eat up voraciously; partake; swallow. Also, use the process to glutton up, live on, misappropriate. squander, usurp, take illegally take or usurp)
  • اَمۡوَالَ — Um-waa-la — Assets (= pl., Affluence, money; property; substance; wealth. Also, gains; goods; possessions; riches; resources; valuables. See more meanings in Note 002:262)
  • کُمۡ — Koom — Your (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person. You. The Holy Qor-aan states this way when addressing both men and women jointly)
  • بَيۡنَ — Bai-na — Among (= Among; between; betwixt; each other; one another)
  • کُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person. You. See کُم above)
  • بِ — B…(il) — With (= The Arabic word  بِ  literally means with. This word when before a noun can make them both mean like an English adverb; so in the instant case the meanings could be deceitfully, falsely, illegally or improperly)
  • الۡبَاطِلِ — Baa-tay-lay — Falsehood (= n., Crooked ways; deceit; deception; false means; false pretenses; illegalities; illusion; incorrect statements; lies; misrepresentations; untruths. A/t/a, ‘in vanity,’ ‘by unlawful means,’ ‘illegal methods’ and ‘unjustly’)

  • اِلَّا — Il-laa — Exception is (= Apart from; besides; excluding; in case; save; unless. A/t/a, this and the next two words jointly, ‘it being lawful to acquire property through’)

يُرِيۡدُ اللّٰهُ لِيُبَيِّنَ لَـكُمۡ وَيَهۡدِيَكُمۡ سُنَنَ الَّذِيۡنَ مِنۡ قَبۡلِكُمۡ وَيَتُوۡبَ عَلَيۡكُمۡ‌ ؕ وَاللّٰهُ عَلِيۡمٌ حَكِيۡمٌ

 

Yo-ree-dool-laa-ho-lay-yo-buy-na-a-koom                                                                                  Wa-yuh-de-koom-so-na-nool-la-ze-na-min-qub-lay-koom                                                          Wa-ya-too-ba-alai-koom                                                                                                                      Wul-laa-ho-aa-lee-moon-ha-kee-m

 

Allah wills that He explains to you                                                                                 And guides you to the histories of those before you                                                       And turns to you in forgiveness.                                                                                            And by God Allah is Most Knowing, Most Wise

Has total and perfect knowledge. Has nothing out of sight. Knows all.  Nothing whatever is beyond or out of His knowing. Well-Acquainted. Well-Aware. Most Knowledgeable)
  • حَكِيۡمٌ‏ — Ha-kee-m — All-Wise (= superlative form indicates the greatest, the highest, the most, and highlights that none more than Him is Exalted in wisdom. Best Possessor of wisdom. Extremely shrewd. Full of wisdom. The Wisest. See 001:002)

Wul-laa-ho-yo-re-do-un-ya-too-bo-alai-koom                                                                                Wa-yo-re-dool-la-ze-na-yut-ta-bay-oo-nush-shah-waa-tay                                                        Un-ta-me-loo-mai-lun-aa-ze-maa

 

By God Allah wills that He turns to you to forgive                                                           And those who pursue the lusts seek                                                                              That you digress a mighty big digression

  • الشَّهَوٰتِ — Shah-waa-tay — The lusts (= pl., Strong sensuous and sexual cravings or longings. Coveted things. Desires with deep and strong passion. Fast, fierce and furious urges for joys and pleasures. Irresistible temptations. Uncontrollable urgent wants  for desired objects of any kind. A/t/a, ‘vain desires,’ ‘low desires,’ ‘evil courses,’ ‘appetites’   and ‘(the dictates of their) lusts’)
  • اَنۡ — Un — That (= Due to or for the reason or purpose; since; so that)
  •  تَمِيۡلُوۡا‏ — Ta-me-loo — You digress (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Bend; change; depart; deviate; divert; incline; move away; swerve; turn aside or away. A/t/a, ‘ye should turn away (from Him),’ ‘you should stray,’ ‘should deviate,’ ‘you (believers) should deviate,’ ‘see you,’  ‘drift’ and ‘incline’)
  • مَيۡلًا — Mai-lun — Digression (= n., Turn away. A/t/a, ‘far away,’ ‘away (from the right path),’ ‘far away (from the right path),’ ‘deviation’  and ‘far astray’)
  • عَظِيۡمًا –Aa-ze-maa — Mighty big (= adj., Abounding; awesome; colossal; enormous; extreme; fabulous; fantastic; great; immense; infinite; magnificent; massive; mighty; monstrous; sensational; superb; terrific; tremendous; wonderful. This word accentuates the aforesaid meanings whether for (a) an extremely good, infinitely magnificent or wonderful condition or (b) an abjectly poor, awfully bad, disgustingly deplorable or frightfully terrible situation or scenario. Additionally, this word as a n:  means greatest; and as a prep: means exceeding. A/t/a, ‘Far, far away,’ ‘incline wholly’ towards’ and ‘tremendously’)

يُرِيۡدُ اللّٰهُ اَنۡ يُّخَفِّفَ عَنۡكُمۡۚ  وَخُلِقَ الۡاِنۡسَانُ ضَعِيۡفًا

Yo-ree-dool-laa-ho-un-yo-khuf-fay-un-koom-wa-kho-lay-qul-in-saa-no-dza-ee-faa

Allah wills that He lightens the burden from you and man was created weak

           

  • يُرِيۡدُ — Yo-ree-do(ol) — He wills (= v., pres., s., m., 3rd person. With no possibility to fail in His designs and with all Power to finalize that He wills, the best translation is He wills. See Note 002:186.  A/t/a, ‘doth wish,’ ‘wishes’ and ‘would’ by some authors are less than accurate)

  • يُخَفَّفُ — Yo-khuf-fay — He lightens (= v., pres., s., m., 3rd person. Decrease; diminish; lessen; minimize; mitigate; reduce the burden of sins. A/t/a, ‘lighten your (difficulties), ‘lighten (the burdens) for you,’ ‘lighten (the burden of bindings,’  ‘make things easier,’ ‘make the burden light,’ ‘make light your burdens’ and ‘lighten your burdens’)
  • عَنۡ –Un —  From (= About; concerning; regarding; relative to)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person. You. See كُمۡ above)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; when; while. A/t/a, ‘for’)
  • خُلِقَ — Kho-lay-qa(ul) — Was created (= v., past., pass., m., s., 3rd person. Brought into being; created due proportion; designed from a scratch out of nothing; fashioned or initiated with the mystery of the creation; formed; gave forms and faces; produced; shaped. A/t/a, ‘has been created’)
  • الۡاِنۡسَانُ — In-saa-no — Man (= The human being; mankind; the species known as man including his feminine gender woman)
  • ضَعِيۡفًا‏ — Dza-ee-faa — Weak (= adj., Feeble; fragile; frail; incapable of taking care; puny; small; scrawny; unable to fend; vulnerable; weedy.. A/t/a, ‘weak (in flesh),‘weak (to resist his lust)’ and ‘weak (cannot be patient to leave sexual intercourse with women)’

 

** Note 004:027. The crux of above verses is forgiveness, in mercy and compassion.

          The Almighty God knows that man is created weak and that’s why He made his burden of responsibilities light.

The Almighty God (a) makes the right and wrong very clear, (b) guides man with prior examples and (c) mercifully forgiveness when man finally realizes and repents (See 002:038).

One of the wrongs is that those who pursue lust lure man to follow them and go astray in a big way. But a time comes when man realizes his wrongs and repents (see 004:018).

The Almighty God is Well Aware of everything and in His Wisdom has set this cycle as a rule of universal application.

That moment of realization, remorse and repentance is the theme of 004:027 to 004:029.

* Note 003:109. Use of a verb in the present tense by the Almighty Allah indicates His promise and a forecast for all times to come. It reflects in its meanings that He has done that act in the past, is doing that right now, and will keep doing it for ever after.

Also reproduced below is the relevant part of Note 002:186.

The word  يُرِيۡدُ  (yo-ree-do) is a verb in the present tense for a single male in 3rd person. It is derived from the root    ا   ر د   that has several meanings including those in relation to the following several persons.

Relative to Allah with no possibility to fail in His designs and with all Power to finalize what He wills, the best translation is with words such as adjudge, affirm, command, decree, decide, design, determine, enforce, finalize, mandate, order or will as in verses 002:186003:109003:177004:027, 004:028 and 004:029.

وَمَنۡ لَّمۡ يَسۡتَطِعۡ مِنۡكُمۡ طَوۡلًا اَنۡ يَّنۡكِحَ الۡمُحۡصَنٰتِ الۡمُؤۡمِنٰتِ فَمِنۡ مَّا مَلَـكَتۡ اَيۡمَانُكُمۡ مِّنۡ فَتَيٰـتِكُمُ الۡمُؤۡمِنٰتِ‌ ؕ   وَاللّٰهُ اَعۡلَمُ بِاِيۡمَانِكُمۡ‌ ؕ   بَعۡضُكُمۡ مِّنۡۢ بَعۡضٍ‌ ۚ   فَانْكِحُوۡهُنَّ بِاِذۡنِ اَهۡلِهِنَّ وَاٰ تُوۡهُنَّ اُجُوۡرَهُنَّ بِالۡمَعۡرُوۡفِ مُحۡصَنٰتٍ غَيۡرَ مُسٰفِحٰتٍ وَّلَا مُتَّخِذٰتِ اَخۡدَانٍ‌ ؕ   فَاِذَاۤ اُحۡصِنَّ فَاِنۡ اَ تَيۡنَ بِفَاحِشَةٍ فَعَلَيۡهِنَّ نِصۡفُ مَا عَلَى الۡمُحۡصَنٰتِ مِنَ الۡعَذَابِ‌ ؕ   ذٰ لِكَ لِمَنۡ خَشِىَ الۡعَنَتَ مِنۡكُمۡ‌ ؕ   وَاَنۡ تَصۡبِرُوۡا خَيۡرٌ لَّكُمۡ‌ ؕ  وَاللّٰهُ غَفُوۡرٌ رَّحِيۡمٌ

Zaa-lay-ka  lay  maun  kha-shay-ya  ul-aa-na-ta  min  koom                                                      Wa  aun  taus-bay-roo  khai-roon  la  koom                                                                                      Wa  ul-laa-ho  gha-foo-roor  ra-hee-m

 

And whoever among you can’t openly afford                                                                    That he marries chaste women believers                                                                        Then may do so from what your right hands have owned                                            From among your believing maids.

And by God Allah is Well Aware of your faiths.                                                                Some of you are from some others.

So, marry them with the permission of their folks                                                        And give them their dowers as appropriate                                                                Chaste women seeking marriage not fornicating                                                            And not taking secret lovers.

And when they are married, then if they come up with lewdness                              Then on them is one-half of what is on the free chaste women                                  From the punishment.

This is for anyone who among you feared wrongdoing.                                                And that you exercise self-restraint is better for you.                                                  And by God Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.

  • لَمۡ — Laum — Cannot (= Absolutely never; does not; no, not at all)
  • يَسۡتَطِعۡ — Yaus-ta-tae — He is able (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. Has, controls, owns or possesses the proper ability, capability, means, measure, strength or other wherewithal to do the needful. With the word لَا (laa) before it, the word means forbidden, restricted, restrained or unable to do what is necessary. A/t/a, ‘have .. the means wherewith,’ ‘have the means (- social or financial),’ ‘to enable’ and ‘able to afford’)
  • مِنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of the class of persons)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person., You all men)
  • طَوۡلًا — Tao-laun — Openly (= adv., Freely; unreservedly; without restraint; with no stint. A/t/a, ‘affluence’)
  • اَنۡ — Aun — That (= Due to; for the reason or purpose; since; so that; that. A/t/a, ‘wherewith’)
  • يَّنۡكِحَ — Yaun-kay-ha … (ul) — He marries (= v., pres., m., 3rd person. Enters the marriage contract. A/t/a, ‘to wed’)
  • الۡمُحۡصَنٰتِ — Moh-sa-naa-tay … (il) — Chaste women (= n., f., pl., Faithful; pure, spotless, unblemished, uncorrupted and unsullied women. This word has become synonymous with the married women whom marriage has taken to higher moral levels, to become chaste, pious and virtuous, and has harnessed to them their urges for procreation and surges for recreation. A/t/a, ‘free’)
  • الۡمُؤۡمِنٰتِ — Moe-may-naa-tay — Believing women (= n., pl., f., Women who follow the Holy Qor-aan,  enter the Faith, embrace Islaam and become Moslems)
  • فَ — Fa — Then (= Hence; so; thus; after all this; consequently; finally)
  • مِنۡ  — Min — From (= Among, from or out of class of persons. See مِنۡ above. A/t/a, ‘(let him marry) such of,’ ‘let him marry,’ ‘let him marry out of those’ and ‘they may wed’)

  • مَّا — Maa — All that (= What; whatever; whatsoever; whom; whomever.  Everything of value including one’s time, talent, energy, abilities, potentials and every kind of physical assets, money, property, possessions and wealth)
  • مَلَكَتۡ — Ma-la-kaut — Had owned (= v., past., f., 3rd person. Held in ownership or some sort of servitude. The phrase made of four words is used in the Holy Qor-aan in verses such as 004:004, 004:025, 004:026, 023:007, 024:034 and 070:031. The simple and straightforward translation of this phrase is given above. The Holy Qor-aan described the action in this phrase by a verb in the past tense, but some authors translated it wrongly in the present tense. The disgrace of slavery deprecated universally is discussed in our our Commentary The Slavery, but its continuation has been insinuated by translating this phrase as follows:-                                                                      — ‘slave girls,’                                                                                                                                      — ‘(slaves) … your right hands possess,’                                                                                        — ‘(captives) that your right hands possess,’                                                                               — ‘your right hands possess,’                                                                                                          — ‘who have passed into your hands as prisoners,’                                                                    — ‘what your right hands possess, namely your believing handmaids’ and                          — ‘such of your believing bonds women as your right  hands own (by being captives in war)’
  • اَيۡمَانُ — Aiy-maa-no — Right hands (= n., pl., The word refers to all that one owns, possesses, controls or over what one has the controlling authority. Since everyone has only one right hand, the word ‘right hands’ in plural really reflects two persons who have mutually agreed and confirmed by shaking their right hands to acknowledge as to what each owned or would do )
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person., You all men)
  • مِنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of class of persons. See مِنۡ above)
  • فَتَيٰـتِ — Fa-ta-yaa-tay — Maids (= n., pl. Young girls, ladies, virgin or women who render services as hired maid or servants. Also, ‘handmaids,’ ‘girls from among those (slaves) and ‘bonds women.’ A/t/a, ‘a slave-girl’ in singular whereas the Holy Qor-aan has used the word which is meant for the plural)
  • كُمۡ — Ko-mo … (ol) — Your (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person., You / Your)
  • الۡمُؤۡمِنٰتِ — Moe-may-naa-tay — Believing women (= n., pl., f., Women who follow the Holy Qor-aan, enter the Faith, embrace Islaam and become Moslems)
  • وَ — Wa … (ul) — And  (= The وَ  vaao here is tantamount to taking oath; solemn declaration or calling as a witness. Normally a Conj. links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • اللّٰهُ — Laa-ho — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)
  • اَعۡلَمُ — Au-la-mo — Well Aware (= adj., To the nth degree … Aware, experienced, familiar, informed or knowing. Also, when the text indicates, as a v., pres., s., 1st person this word means I know more and best. The Holy Qor-aan used this word as adjective but one author translated it as ‘knew best’ which is a verb in the past tense in 003:037 and inconsistently therewith as ‘knows … best’ as a verb in the present tense in verse 004:026. A/t/a, ‘has full knowledge’ by several authors as a verb in the present tense)

  • بِ  —  Bay … (il)  — With (= Literally the word بِ  means with. When used with the word الۡمَعۡرُوۡفِ‌ it has been translated variously like ‘according to, as, as a, as a gesture of, in,  on or within)
  • الۡمَعۡرُوۡفِ‌ — Mau-roo-fay — Appropriate (= With / in decency, grace, gratefulness, honor, justice, kindness or propriety. According to the custom / usage.   As a gesture of kindness.  In an approved, becoming, befitting, customary, decent, equitable, fair, generous,  just, kind, legal, proper, reasonable or suitable basis, fashion, form, manner, method, term or way.    As a noun anything that is appropriate, customary, decent, equitable, fair, graceful, honorable, just, kind, legal, proper, reasonable, suitable or within rights.   As an adverb appropriately, beautifully, decently, equitably, fairly, gracefully, gratefully, gratuitously, honorably, lawfully, nicely, properly, reasonably,   righteously, rightfully or suitably. A/t/a, ‘justly,’ ‘with equity’ and ‘according to what is fair’)
  • مُحۡصَنٰتٍ — Moh-sa-naa-tin — Chaste women (= n., f., pl., Faithful; pure, spotless, unblemished, uncorrupted and unsullied women. See الۡمُحۡصَنٰتِ  above.  A/t/a, ‘they should be chaste,’ ‘they being chaste’ and ‘being properly married’)

  • اَخۡدَانٍ — Aukh-daa-nay — Secret lovers (= n., Paramours; secret lovers; hidden love affairs; those who make secret pledges; confidentially promising or secretly entering hidden pacts; lovers, especially one in a relationship with a married person.   • فَاحِشَةٍ — Faa-hay-sha-tin — Lewdness (= n., s., Abomination. Illegality. Immorality. Indecency. Inherently bad, evil, foul, immoral, improper, lewd, obscene, repulsive, shameful, sinful or unseemly act, conduct, deed, practice or thing. Open foul infraction. Sexual perversion. Violation. Wickedness by doing in public view any of the above outrages. A/t/a, ‘adultery,’ ‘illegal sexual intercourse and ‘unbecoming conduct’)

  • الۡعَنَتَ — Aun-ta — Wrong-doing (= n., Bad practice; evil; offence; sin. A/t/a, ‘falling into evil,’ ‘fall into sin,’ ‘commit sin’ and ‘being harmed in his religion or in his body’)

  • غَفُوۡرٌ — Gha-foo-ro … (or) — Most Forgiving(= adj., Superlative form indicates the Greatest Forgiver. The word highlights that no one more than Him excuses, overlooks and pardons all kinds of crimes, errors, faults, sins and wrongs. See 001:001. A/t/a, ‘Oft-forgiving’)
  • الرَّحِيۡمُ — Ra-heem — Most Merciful (= adj., superlative form indicates the Greatest Merciful. Merciful Forever. Floodlights that none more than Him shows kindness and mercy, again and again, continually, incessantly and indefinitely like perpetually incoming waves of an ocean. See 001:001)

 

** Note 004:026. The accurate translation of وَمَنۡ لَّمۡ يَسۡتَطِعۡ مِنۡكُمۡ طَوۡلًا اَنۡ يَّنۡكِحَ الۡمُحۡصَنٰتِ الۡمُؤۡمِنٰتِ   as stated above is that whoso among you “can’t freely and openly afford that he marries chaste believing women.”

But most authors have copied each other and translated the relevant words with a glaring inaccuracy into “can’t afford to marry free believing women.”

The fact is that the word  طَوۡلًا  (tao-lun) meaning freely, openly or unreservedly qualifies the preceding verb  يَسۡتَطِعۡ  (yaus-ta-tay) and makes perfect sense as can’t afford freely and openly.

Following inaccuracies developed in the translations by removing the meanings of the word طَوۡلًا from its intended and immediately preceding word which is the verb يَسۡتَطِعۡ  and attaching it to the non-intended third word that follows it and is noun الۡمُحۡصَنٰتِ (moh-sa-naa-tay).

Firstly, the Holy Qor-aan empowered the groom with ability and capacity to marry freely and openly but the inaccurate translations took it away and reduced the impact of the Command.

Secondly, the Holy Qor-aan did not burden the chaste and righteous believing bride to be free as well, but the inaccurate translations arbitrarily added this restriction there.

Thirdly, the inaccuracy attached the unintended addition of freedom to a believing bride, thus differentiating it from a non-free captive slave and implying the cruel continuation of slavery.
