* Note 003:014. The real importance of the ruling in this verse is lasting and perpetual. The Believers are given a cart blanche mandate that if true in their Faith they will always win against much bigger, larger and stronger foes. The condition is that the Believers must be so in the real sense of the word with full faith in the Almighty God and not merely with a lip-service.

It is the application of this rule to one instance as its illustration where the translations vary. The Battle of Badr was fought on March 13, 624 AD [“17 Ramadan, 2 AH in the Islamic calendar” – Wikipedia]. On one side were about 1,000 armed soldiers invaders from Mecca. The other side was 313 Moslem Believers who were hardly equipped for a war. Odds were heavily stacked against Moslems and yet they defeated the 3-times-larger army.

The phrase seeing them twice them in this verse has been translated in different ways. The translations differ regarding Who saw with their own eyes and Whom did they see. The verse has used two words  هُمۡ  and  هِمۡ  and they both are pronouns. Do both these pronouns refer to only one side? If so, which one? Or, one pronoun to one side and the other to the opposing faction? That is why the following different interpretations exist.

  1. The believers saw the invaders twice their own number whereas actually they were three times the number of Believers.
  2. The invaders saw the believers twice their actual number which really was only 313 (as generally stated, or 319 as stated by N J Dawood).
  3. The believers saw themselves as if they were twice their own actual number.
  4. The invaders saw themselves as if they were twice their actual number of 1000.
  5. Both groups appeared in their own eyes — as well as to those of their opponents — twice their actual numbers.

** Note 002:273.  M Mohammad Ali in his Note 359 made a very significant point that strikes at the very root, and contradicts the Mullah-fabricated concept, of Jihad. He stated as follows.

The Muslim society had “to repel its enemies in the interests of its existence. It show that the Muslims did not fight to bring the disbelievers into the folds of Islam; for that, the Prophet is told in words, was not his responsibility. It was for the good of their people, the defence of the Muslim community that the Muslims were required to raise subscriptions”.

* Note 002:270.  The word الۡحِكۡمَةَ has been translated in many different ways.

The literal meanings of word الۡحِكۡمَةَ (Ul-hik-mah) include the following.  Ability to distinguish good from bad, right from wrong. Administered appropriate instruction.  Balancing ability.  Comprehension. Intelligence.  Understanding.  Shrewdness.  Many verses including the 002:130, 002:152 and 002:232 have been translated with those meanings of the word.

But quoting the Tafsir At-Tabari, the eminent scholars Dr Al-Hilali and Dr Khan have translated this word in the verse 002:252 as the ‘Prophethood’ and stated as follows.

“Allah gave him[Dawud (David)] the kingdom[after the death of Talut (Saul) and Samuel] and Al-Hikmah (Prophethood) and taught him of that which He willed.”

The word الۡحِكۡمَةَ (Ul-hik-mah) has also been translated as the ‘Knowledge of Islamic laws and jurisprudence.’  Such interpretation is supported by the verse 003:066 because Abraham (a) had prayed that way many centuries before Islam and b) had practically made a forecast about the coming of the Holy Prophet s.a.w and advent of Islam.

Construing Abraham’s aforesaid prayer and forecast to translate this word as ‘Knowledge of Islamic laws and jurisprudence’ is open to the criticism (albeit unjustified in spirit) that what Abraham had sought by his invocation many centuries before Islaam could not be about Islam.

All above extrapolations are plausible in translating الۡحِكۡمَةَ as used in the verse 002:270.

  • تَتَفَكَّرُوۡنَ — Ta-ta-fuk-ka-roo-n — May reflect  (= Give some thought; consider; ponder; think about)

* Note 002:267. The translation of the last part is ‘This is how Allah makes the revelations clear to you so that you will reflect.’  The original text has used the pronoun ‘koom’ twice and underscored the emphasis on ‘you’ as the addressee.  Paraphrasing this sentence by using ‘you’ only once as the English language would ordinarily do has been avoided here intentionally. See another example under 002:243.

But some examples of paraphrasing like the following are significant.  The translator there has conveyed the gist in his own words rather than providing an accurate translation of the original text. “Would any of you, being a man well-advanced in age with helpless children to support, wish to have his garden planted with palm-trees, vines and all manner of fruits, and watered by running streams – blasted and consumed by a fiery whirlwind”? – N. J. Dawood

* 002:266.  Some translations of this verse reflect how apparently trivial differences can magnify into huge issues. The translation of the original text is ‘garden on or with a height.’

A translation ‘Garden situated on a highly fertile land’ obviously missed the word  بِ  between the garden and height.  The repercussions of using the phrase of a highly fertile land precipitated some one-half of a century later.

Ahmadis Moslems in 1947 migrated from India to Pakistan.  They bought a barren tract of water-less salinity-rich land and settled on it. They named it  رَبۡوَةٍ   (Rabwah] and that in about 50 years grew into a sizeable city. Pakistani Legislators did not like Ahmadies using the name of Rabwah [رَبۡوَةٍ with the alleged and assumed meanings of a highly fertile land] for the city Ahmadies had built from a scratch. So the Legislator used legislative power to legislatively change the name of the city from  رَبۡوَةٍ to Chenab Nagar.

It is not known how many of the Pakistani Legislators actually knew the Arabic enough to even know the difference between  رَبۡوَةٍ جَنَّةٍۢ  and جَنَّةٍۢ بِرَبۡوَةٍ.  But they could not have felt so aggressively offended if their Mullah community had not infuriated them by mistranslating the original text with — instead of without — the word  بِ  between the garden and the height.

The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                              002:265

Yaa-auy-yo-hul-la-zee-na-aa-ma-noo                                                                                               Laa-toob-tay-loo-sa-da-qaa-tay-koom                                                                                           Bil-mun-nay-wul-aa-zaa                                                                                                                      Kul-la-ze-yoon-fay-qo-maa-la-hoo-ray-aa-un-naa-say                                                                Wa-laa-yoe-may-no-bil-laa-hay-wul-yao-mil-aa-khir.                                                              Fa-ma-tha-la-hoo-ka-mith-lay-suf-waa-nin                                                                                  Alai-hay-to-raa-boon-fa-aa-saa-ba-hoo                                                                                        Waa-bsy-loon-fa-ta-ra-ka-hoo-sul-daa.                                                                                           Laa-yoq-da-roo-na-alaa-sha-in-mim-maka-sa-oo.                                                                     Wul-laa-ho-laa-yah-dil-qao-mil-kaa-fay-ree-n.
