Informed to the maximum.  Has total and perfect knowledge.  Has nothing out of sight.  Knows all.  Well-Acquainted. Well-Aware. Most Knowledgeable)

* Note 002:225.  The literal meanings of the word عُرۡضَةً [oor-dza-ton] are closer to an excuse or reason to do something by setting it up as a fulcrum, leverage. pivot or see-saw plank.  The words   اَنۡ تَبَرُّوۡا وَتَتَّقُوۡا وَتُصۡلِحُوۡا  [that you be good and righteous and make peace] categorically prohibit using God’s name in vain to support and strengthen the stance to be good.

The straightforward meanings of the entire text  لَا تَجۡعَلُوا اللّٰهَ عُرۡضَةً لِّاَيۡمَانِکُمۡ are ‘Do not make Allah an excuse for your Faiths that you be good …….’   The common sense also tells that one should do good things as a resident of human village without swearing by God to do so.

However, exactly the opposite meanings are insinuated with the words like ‘abstain from doing’ [Allamah Nooruddin],‘against’ [Ahmad Zidan, Dr Al-Hilali and Dr Khan], ‘hindrance to your being righteous’ [M Pickthall], ‘an excuse for refraining from doing good’ [Zafrulla Khan], and ‘you may thereby abstain from doing good and acting righteously’ [Malik Ghulam Farid).

* Note 002:224.  The following 3 words used in verse 002:224 need special attention.

حَرۡثٌ  (Hur-thoon) means a piece of land, crop-land, field or tilth and convey its characteristics.   Land grows crops, foods and fruits which can be harvested by the farmer year after year.    It produces for the cultivator in proportion to the plowing, seeding and water it receives.   It never asks its farmer anything whatever, never complains whether looked after or not.   It just responds very quickly to its maltreatment with lesser, poorer and inferior produce.   That is why it behooves a farmer to put in it more water, better seed and take out weeds.   That is why land is an asset that does not diminish in value even if abused or maltreated.   That is why man has continually killed man to own or control more of this precious asset.   That is why all cultures recognize its value, some worshiping as Dhurti-Mata (Mother).   That is why it deserves the utmost respect, tender care, looking after, and needs so little.  That is why the Holy Qor-aan has put woman on such a high alter for man to cherish her.   See the Commentary Woman’s Role in Evolution)

اۡتُوا   (Aa-to) means you approach, come, enter or visit the land or fields you own, control or get.   The concept is a straightforward visit by a cultivator who tills, seeds and water his land.   The same way man is instructed to approach his wife with genuine love and tender care.   Such pleasing mannerism invariably produces better responses conducive to procreation.   The Creator who had created man and woman knew how He had created all His creation.   He told man how to get the best results and correspondingly told woman how to react.

شِئۡتُمۡ‌   (Shay-toom) means ‘as you wish’ or choose, decide, desire, like, plan, please, prefer or will.   One extrapolation used the phraseology of ‘when and how’ [A Yusuf Ali, Ahmad Zidan].   Other descriptions may also have stated the concept similarly, honestly, and innocently.   Yet some translators have printed words which are quite below the purity of a Scripture.   Such authors let out their own perversions and prejudices in translating the original text.   Dr Al-Hilali and Dr Khan used such words purporting to be translation of verse 002:223.   N J Dawood employed similar language in his works pretending it to be the word of God.   They have used the words [deliberately not reproduced here] which borderline vulgarity.   In translating verses 002:223 to 002:240 many foul words and expressions are inserted.   Those words depicting nudity really are no translation of any part of the Holy Qor-aan.    We profess freedom of expression but do not extend it to mislead untrained minds by it.   Quotations like “Gambling must be followed by giving alms” may be in some Hadeeth.   But they insinuate very wrong impressions when added to a translation of Holy Qor-aan.   This site gives simple translation of the Holy Qor-aan without additions or subtractions.

يَتَرَ بَّصۡنَ   (Ya-ta-rub-bus-na) is used in the verse 002:229 and 002:235 and its derivate in 002:227.    The word as explained in Note 002:229 shows what time-periods a women must observe.

* Note 002:223.  The word الۡمَحِيۡضِ‌ is for the monthly process of discharging blood and other matter from the womb that occurs between puberty and menopause in women and female primates who are not pregnant. Allamah Nooruddin stated that this section is ‘about (having conjugal relations during) the menstruations.’  Wickipedia gives some medical, social and cultural information and taboos about this term in different religions and customs and states a ‘chance of infections’ but mentions no particular injurious medical after-effects. But this verse is based upon the knowledge of the Creator who created men and women and provides the best and safest guidelines. Those who follow the Commandment naturally avoid the bad results. Some violators may — due to God’s forgiving grace — still escape whatever unfortunate consequences could follow, but the best policy is to do what the Almighty God has clearly directed.

Also used in this verse are three words from the root  ط  ,  ه  ,  and ر .  Several dozen derivative words flow out of that root. The meanings of the verbs from the root include ‘to anoint, to clean, to cleanse, to purify.’ The meanings of the nouns include ‘holy, purity, saint.’  While each change to form a derivate develops some special nuance, the principal meanings of the root stay intact in all its derivates

* Note 002:222.  This verse shows why a believer must not marry before a prospective spouse becomes a believer.    Physical attraction is the main reason to marry but the beauty of body can change and fade fast.   Marriage for wrong reasons usually turns a matrimony into a living hell and ruins the progeny.    Allah knows what is good and exhorts that way of life as the heaven on earth – a better alternative.

One Hadeeth reports that men look for their brides who have (a) assets, (b) beauty, (c) connections, but (d) dutifulness to God [the piety or righteousness] is the best criteria to look for.    But Moslems have yet to agree on one standard Islamic way to start their married life.    They marry differently in different countries and all they generally need is the blessing of the Clergy.

Some marriages are completed before either spouse ever sees or knows the other.    Some are contracted across oceans and one goes to live with the other in different country.    Some are celebrated with pomp and show and ceremonies that are spread over several days.    Some must be conducted with a minimal arrangement requiring pronouncement by a cleric.    Western style courtship in Europe or USA is frowned upon by the Middle Eastern Moslem.    Families procure armed forces bands for aristocratic touch but others construe it a vulgarity.    Playing records of movie melodies is common in Indo-Pak area as the festivity of marriage.    Yet the participants in such weddings have been excommunicated as an un-Islamic activity.     Local customs of people have been inducted in Moslem weddings without loud disapproval.    Marriages in Pakistan, UK, USA and India we attended were poles apart in their essentials.

Some individuals depart from the guidance given in Islam for personal reasons.    That is a private affair and a matter between them and the Almighty God to forgive them.    A religious leader publicly justifying such conduct generally moves and misleads masses.    But fabricating excuses for others for power or politicians makes them downright criminal.    Too many bid-duts (bad acts) have been added to or subtracted from the theme of this verse.    Commentary Islaam 102 – History of Additions and Subtractions decries such malpractices.    Several sects have been created and recognized by such unfortunate additions of the Clergy.    We recall reading in some literature the following.

Bad is he who [sins for himself and] ruins his worldly life here.                                                   Worse is he who [sees another sin and by justifying his conduct] ruins his own Hereafter. But worst is he who [sins himself] for another’s worldly life ruins his own Hereafter.

002:221

The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                                   002:221

Fid-doon-ya-wul-aa-khay-ra-taay.                                                                                                Wa-yus-aloo-na-ka-unil-ya-taa-maa.                                                                                           Qool-is-laa-hoon-la-hoom-khai-r.                                                                                                    Wa-in-to-khaa-lay-to-hoom                                                                                                            Fa-ikh-waa-no-koom                                                                                                                           Wul-laa-ho-yau-la-mool-moof-say-do-may-nul-moos-lay-hay                                              Wa-lao-shaa-al-laa-ho-la-au-na-ta-koom                                                                                        In-nul-laa-ha-aa-zee-zoon-ha-kee-m.

* 002:220.   This verse clearly lays out three Commandments.   And it has given reasons for doing so for the thinking minds equipped to probe deeper and fathom out other niceties.

  1.  It discourages drinking and gambling.   It has furnished the reason that their ill effects are far more than their benefits.
  1. It encourages donating the Excess.    It has thus practically prohibited donating by borrowing personally or brow-beating others to fund even the good deeds such as the charity.
  1. It states Like this Allah makes clear to you the revelations so that you may reflect.’   It initiates the process to ponder, understand, internalize and practice the mandates.    It is stated in the last ten (10) words of this verse and reiterated several other times.    It has used many different words in verses 002:222, 002:243, 024:059 and 024:060.    It employed exactly the same words in 002:267 with the pronoun koom (you) twice.    An English translation should normally have used ‘you’ only once in one sentence.    Commentary Pronouns and Verbs explains the frequent use of this in the Arabic.   Our simple straightforward translation necessitates using the ‘you’ twice this way.    Otherwise a good example of paraphrasing is the following translation of 002:267.     “Would any of you, being a man well-advanced in age with helpless children to support, wish to have his garden — a garden planted with palm-trees, vines and all manner of fruits, and watered by running streams — blasted and consumed by a fiery whirlwind”? * Note 002:219.  This verse lays down the following four qualifications that anyone can easily have.

  1. Those who have believed and embraced the Faith and
  2. Migrated by fleeing from their native lands, and
  3. Strove to do good and fight in the causes of Allah, and
  4. Looked forward to the Mercy of Allah.

Anyone who combines all four characteristics is assured to find Allah the most Forgiving and most Merciful.

And theme of the verse is illustrated by the famous Hadeeth.    The wife Hudzrut Ayesha r.a enumerated some virtues of her husband the Holy Prophet s.a.w and then asked him: “Surely Allah will admit you into the paradise.”   The answer was, “Only by His Grace.”

This could be one reason why (1) Moslems (2) migrants (3) doing good (4) look towards the Almighty God forgiving all their human fragilities and shortcomings.
