* 002:220.   This verse clearly lays out three Commandments.   And it has given reasons for doing so for the thinking minds equipped to probe deeper and fathom out other niceties.

  1.  It discourages drinking and gambling.   It has furnished the reason that their ill effects are far more than their benefits.
  1. It encourages donating the Excess.    It has thus practically prohibited donating by borrowing personally or brow-beating others to fund even the good deeds such as the charity.
  1. It states Like this Allah makes clear to you the revelations so that you may reflect.’   It initiates the process to ponder, understand, internalize and practice the mandates.    It is stated in the last ten (10) words of this verse and reiterated several other times.    It has used many different words in verses 002:222, 002:243, 024:059 and 024:060.    It employed exactly the same words in 002:267 with the pronoun koom (you) twice.    An English translation should normally have used ‘you’ only once in one sentence.    Commentary Pronouns and Verbs explains the frequent use of this in the Arabic.   Our simple straightforward translation necessitates using the ‘you’ twice this way.    Otherwise a good example of paraphrasing is the following translation of 002:267.     “Would any of you, being a man well-advanced in age with helpless children to support, wish to have his garden — a garden planted with palm-trees, vines and all manner of fruits, and watered by running streams — blasted and consumed by a fiery whirlwind”? * Note 002:219.  This verse lays down the following four qualifications that anyone can easily have.

  1. Those who have believed and embraced the Faith and
  2. Migrated by fleeing from their native lands, and
  3. Strove to do good and fight in the causes of Allah, and
  4. Looked forward to the Mercy of Allah.

Anyone who combines all four characteristics is assured to find Allah the most Forgiving and most Merciful.

And theme of the verse is illustrated by the famous Hadeeth.    The wife Hudzrut Ayesha r.a enumerated some virtues of her husband the Holy Prophet s.a.w and then asked him: “Surely Allah will admit you into the paradise.”   The answer was, “Only by His Grace.”

This could be one reason why (1) Moslems (2) migrants (3) doing good (4) look towards the Almighty God forgiving all their human fragilities and shortcomings.

Reproduced below is Note 002:178

*Note 002:178.   The divine mandate is to take care of some under-privileged segments of the society.   The fortunate who have utilized time, money and energy to produce results are told to spread the word.  Some have-nots ذَوِى الۡقُرۡبٰى وَالۡيَتٰمٰى وَالۡمَسٰكِيۡنَ وَابۡنَ السَّبِيۡل  have been made the responsibility of those who have been blessed with aforesaid means.   The rich are mandated to share some of their blessings with the less fortunate.   In its verses including the following the Holy Qor-aan has named four such ways of sharing, i.e., Causes of God, Qur-zay-Husna, Suq-qa or Zakaat.

002:084 enumerates them as a part of the Covenant assigned to the Children of Israel.

002:178 counts them as the virtues that man must practice even thousands years later.

002:216 states them as the duties of all men who are the residents of one human village.

Chapter 092 lays out a plan for economic success all can climb – as a ladder, step by step.

Individually each above-mentioned act produces a lot of good.    Collectively they all are destined to uplift the whole society.    Islaam is the one-word that reflects all these virtues of Humanism.

Did you think that you would enter the Paradise                                                             And when the likeness has not come up to you of                                                            Those who had gone by before you.                                                                                       Adversity and affliction had struck them.                                                                           And they were shaken so much and so long until says                                           The Messenger and those who had believed along with him                                     “Where is the help of Allah?”                                                                                             Isn’t it a fact that Allah’s help is certainly close?

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • لَمَّا — Lum-maa — When not (= This is a combination of two words.  The first word is لم (lum) or لَن  (lunn) meaning ‘absolutely, certainly, definitely, positively, surely, truly or verily. The second word is  ما  (maa) meaning ‘no, never, absolutely not; not all.   Joined together  لَمَّا  (lum-maa)  means ‘Certainly  not;’ ‘definitely never;’ ‘never ever’)
  • يَاۡ تِ — Yau-tay — Come up (= v., pres., s., 3rd person. Arrive; bring or come up; enter;  produce and prove as true; reach; show; turn up. Also, create; deliver. • مَّثَلُ — Ma-tha-lo(ol) — Likeness (= n., Here this word refers to the similar fate, tests, trials and turmoil suffered by the people gone by. Also, comparable; duplicate; identical in nature; just like; resembling; similar; substitute. Of the same kind, looks, quality, shape or type)

Also, those who made peace, protected, rescued, saved  or secured themselves from sin and against fear; those who accepted, admitted, affirmed, approved, concurred, confirmed, corroborated, embraced, evidenced, proved,  testified or witnessed their entry in Islam. See the Note 002:026c.  The original text states the divine rule in the past tense; and some rightly translated it in the past tense as “who believed” in this verse 002:215 but then they for no reason translated it in the present tense as “who believe” in verses 003:142 and 003:150 among others. ** Note 002:215. The Holy Qor-aan has used the words الۡبَاۡسَآءُ (Bau-saa-o = Adversity) and الضَّرَّآءُ (Dzur-raa-o = Affliction) in many verses like 002:178, 002:215, 006:043 and 007:095)

The people were just one type of community.                                                                Then Allah set up the Prophets                                                                                           As the bearers of good news and warnings.                                                                      And He entrusted them with the Book with the Truth                                              So that He (or it) decides among the people in which they disagreed.                And none differed in it except those who were given that                                            After the clear signs had come to them                                                                         Transgressing among themselves.                                                                                       So Allah guided those who had believed because                                                            They had not disagreed in the Truth as per His Plan.                                                By God Allah guides him who He chooses                                                                          On to the path that is straight.

* Note 002:211. The derivates from the root  ا   م    ر     include many verbs and nouns.

Verb words are 14 for the past tense. اَمَرَ is for a single, male, 3rd person. Another 14 words are for the present tense. Several dozens of them are for the near and remote future tenses.

Some words are both Noun and verbs. اَمۡر  is one of them and a common noun. Adding الۡ  before makes it الۡاَمۡر  (ul-umr) a proper noun (003:129). It can have the vowel Zomma on its last letterر to make it الۡاَمۡرُ‌ (002:211). A preceding حرف جآر can cause the vowel Kasra under that ر and make it اَمۡرِ (017:086) The singular is الۡاَمۡرِ (003:155). The plural is الۡاُمُوۡرُ (002:211).

The word الۡاَمۡرُ‌ or الۡاَمۡرِ means the same whether singular or plural . It can be that someone higher-up like Allah has adjudicated, decided, issued, laid down, imposed, mandated, passed or placed a decree, direction or order that must be obeyed. Or it can be that something like Nature or some man with a higher strength or power has caused an event or situation or created a matter or issue.

Nouns can be in many forms ( ابؤاب = Ub-waab). All derivatives reflect different shades and nuances which befit various contexts. Following are the meanings ofاَمۡر .                               An authority, command, control, decision, decree, direction, instruction, judgment, mandate, order, rule or responsibility to be obeyed or carried out.                                                  An act, activity, affair or issue to be tackled, matter to be attended or task to be settled.        Any behavior, conduct, deed, doing, matter or problem to be worked out.                                Any condition or situation, news or tidings, event or occasion that requires swift action like rescuing victims from a burning fire, horrendous hurricane, raging floods or sinking ship.                                                                                                                                                                Any duty to do, job to carry out, instruction to issue, judgment to pass or verdict to give. For example, in a legal environment the word conveys laying down law, making, mandating, imposing or ordering an authoritative adjudication, conclusion, decision, determination, decree, direction, judgment or order by a court or body of lawgivers.

The last clause of this verse is a very big consolation for men and women.  It provides incentive to a do-gooder that he/she will be rewarded for the good works done.  It warns the mischief-makers that ultimately the decisions will be made by the Almighty.    It gives people the confidence that every wrong will eventually be set right by their Creator.    It does not pacify people with a fatalistic attitude but gives them a key to the peace of mind.    The key is, as stated in verse 013:029, “Does not the remembrance of Allah comfort hearts.’

Every 25 years man doubles all prior progress in most fields of education, medicine and science.    He has fed millions from one kernel, walked over moon and done robotic surgery long distances.    He has had big super powers, great kingdoms and world-wide empires on which sun did not set.    Hundreds of thousands of generals, invaders and armies have periodically ravished human lives.    Terrific socio-economic systems, movements, religious wars and invasions have killed billions.    All those conflicts and upheavals occurred in just the last 10,000 years of life on the planet Earth.   Anyone can imagine the insignificance of earth, a tiny spec in the Universe so  tremendously vast.    And yet the Almighty God has warned all wrong-doers and consoled their victims of the Result.    Invariably it is He Who decides, resolves and settles all issues.
