And surely if you brought to those given the Book
All signs still they won’t follow your Qibla.
And you are not a follower of their Qibla.
And some of them are not followers of others’ Qibla
And surely if you followed their fancies
After the Knowledge has come to you

Then you surely will be among the wrongdoers (like them)

** Note 002:146. People before Islam had followed different scriptures. They turned to different directions for their worships and did not agree that one Qibla was common to all.

Verse 002:121 stated the Jews and Christians wished Moslems to follow their religions.

Verses 002:145, 002:150 and 002:151 repeated several times the direction to Moslems   فَوَلِّ وَجۡهَكَ شَطۡرَ الۡمَسۡجِدِ الۡحَـرَا  to change their Qibla. They obeyed. See Commentary ‘Qibla Changed‘.

People of the Book differed with each other and did not agree when Islam fixed a Qibla. Moslems followed the Holy Prophet s.a.w., in implementing the Commandment right away.

Both verses 002:121 and 002:146 stated that the Holy Prophet s.a.w had the knowledge.

Verse 002:146 stated that the disbelievers didn’t accept the Qibla fixed for Moslems. But the consequences for flouting the teachings in these two verses are different and severe. 002:121 warns that the flouter won’t help from God. 002:146 labels them wrongdoers.

The initial addressee كَ (you) was the Holy Prophet s.a.w who could not have possibly violated a Command. But really the recipients of this change are all human beings, whether they follow him or not. The others wanted to stop Moslems from worshiping by facing their Qibla in the Kau’ba. Moslems were told to distinguish the right from the wrong and be not a wrongdoer.
