The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                                     007:097

 

وَلَوۡ اَنَّ اَهۡلَ الۡقُرٰٓى اٰمَنُوۡا وَاتَّقَوۡا لَـفَتَحۡنَا عَلَيۡهِمۡ بَرَكٰتٍ مِّنَ السَّمَآءِ وَالۡاَرۡضِ وَلٰـكِنۡ كَذَّبُوۡا فَاَخَذۡنٰهُمۡ بِمَا كَانُوۡا يَكۡسِبُوۡنَ

 

Wa  lao  aun-na  ah-la  ul-qo-raa  aa-ma-noo  wa  ut-ta-qoo
La  fa-tauh-naa  aa-lai  him  ba-ra-kaa-tin
May-na  us-sa-maa-aiy  wa  ul-aurdz-dzay
Wa  laa-kin  kauz-za-boo  f
a  aa-khauz-naa  hoom
Bay-maa  kaa-noo  yauk-say-boo-n

 

And if residents of the towns had believed and were pious,
We certainly would have opened on them blessings
From the sky above and the earth below.
But they belied the truth.
So we caught them in punishment
Because of what they had been earning.

  • اَهۡلُ — Ah-lo … (l) — Residents of (= n., Owners, persons or residents. See- Note 002:197a. A/t/a, ‘the people of’)
  • الۡقُرٰٓى — Qo-raa — Towns (= n., pl of a city, colony, hamlet, habitat, population center; town, township or anywhere man lives, prospers or resides. A/t/a ‘the towns,’ ‘those towns,’ ‘township’ and ‘those cities’)
  • اٰمَنُوۡا — Aa-ma-noo — They Believed (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Believed in the Holy Qor-aan and became Moslems. Accepted Iss-laam. Admitted to be Moslem. A/t/a ‘had believed,’ ‘had but believed’ and ‘had … believed’)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., It links words, phrases, etc.  See  وَ   above)
  • اتَّقُوا — Aut-ta-qoo — Were pious (= v., past., pl., 2nd person. Avoided angering Allah;, were clean, righteous and mindful of their duty to God. Commentary The Righteous.’ A/t/a, ‘feared God,’ ‘kept their duty,’ ‘been righteous,’ ‘kept from evil,’ ‘guarded    against transgression,’ ‘had been godfearing’ and ‘had the Taqwa (piety)’ 
  • لَ — La — Certainly (= Absolutely; assuredly; categorically; clearly, definitely,  doubtlessly; earnestly; indeed; positively; really; truly; seriously; sincerely; specifically; surely; verily)
  • فَتَحۡنَا — Fa-tauh-naa — Opened up (= v., past., s., 3rd person. Brought victory; disclosed; informed; laid bare; opened closed doors; revealed; shown; told; unfolded; won. A/t/a, ‘We would …  have opened,’ ‘We would have opened,’ ‘We would have showered,’ ‘We would have bestowed,’ ’We should …  have opened out’ and ‘We should have opened for’)
  • عَلٰى — Alaa — On (= Above; against; before; during; for; on; on top of; over; to; upon. A/t/a, ‘to,’ ‘for’ and ‘upon’)
  • هِمۡ — Him — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; theirs)
  • بَرَكٰتٍ — Ba-ra-kaa-tin … (m) — Blessings (= n., pl.. Approbations. Boons. Gifts. Lucks. A/t/a, ‘(All kinds of) blessings,’ ‘(the gates of) blessings’ and ‘the riches’)
  • مِّنَ — May-na … (us) — From (= Among, from or out of the class or category of several articles, counts, kind, things, persons or phenomenon. A/t/a, ‘of’)
  • السَّمَآءِ — Sa-maa-aiy — The sky (= n., s., Clouds, rainwater or sky. All above ground, on  earth or in space. Firmament, heaven, space or world. Universe. Also, heaven as known to human knowledge. A/t/a, ’the heaven,’ ‘heaven’ and ‘the sky’)
  • وَ — Wa … (ul) — And (= Conj., It links words, phrases, etc.. See وَ  above)
  • الۡاَرۡضِ — Aul-aur-dzay — The earth (= n., s., Area; country; earth; ground; land; territory. Also life on earth, nation; people or society in general. A/t/a, ‘the earth’ and ‘earth’)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., It links words, phrases, etc.. See وَ  above)
  • لٰـكِنۡ — Laa-kin — But (= However; instead; nevertheless; yet)
  • كَذَّبُوۡا — Kauz-za-boo — They belied (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Belied; contradicted; denied; derided, denounced, disowned, disproved; falsified; opposed, misrepresented, negated; rejected. Accused or charged with falsehood. Treated as liars. A/t/a, ‘they rejected (the Truth),’ ‘they rejected,’ ‘they rejected the Prophets,’ ‘they disbelieved,’         ‘(unto every messenger’ they gave the lie,’ ‘they cried lies ‘(to the Prophets),’ ’they denied their apostles’ and ‘they denied (the Messengers’)

  • فَ — Fa — Then (= After all this; as a result; at the end; consequently; hence; yet; in conclusion; resultantly; so; then; thereafter; therefore; thus. A/t/a, ‘and’ and ‘so’)
  • اَخَذۡنَا — Aa-khauz-naa — We Took (= v., past., pl., 1st person. Caught. Drew. Got hold of. Grabbed. Held. Inflicted. Obtained. Received. Secured. Seized. Struck. Took. The past tense verb for single 3rd person is converted into that of plural 1st person as explained in the Note 001:007. A/t/a, ‘We brought … to book,’ ‘We seized them,’ ‘We punished them,’ ‘We overtook’ and ‘We took them (with punishment’)
  • هُمۡ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; theirs)
  • بِمَا — Bay-maa — Because (= Combination of two words.  بِ  means ‘with / in’ and مَاۤ  means ‘all that, whatever, whatsoever or whenever.’  The combination  بِمَا  (bay-maa) means ‘because of; due to; for the reason that; in all that; on account of; owing to, with all that. See 002:092 A/t/a, ‘for,’ ‘because of that which,’ ‘on account of’ and ‘on account of what’)
  • كَانُوۡۤا — Kaa-noo — Had been (= v., past., pl., m., 3rd person., Continued doing; used to; went on; were doing. Words has or had always been indicate endless continuity from the past to the present and leading into the future. A/t/a, ‘they used to’ and ‘they had’)
  • يَكۡسِبُوۡنَ — Yauk-say-boon — They earning (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. Committing; getting gains; performing; pocketing profits; receiving returns. A/t/a, ‘earn,’ ‘earn’ (polytheism and crimes)’ and ‘accomplish.’ But the noun in ‘their misdeeds,’ and past tense in ‘did,’ ‘earned’ and ‘they earned’ are no translation of the verb present tense verb in the Holy Qor-aan text)
