  يٰۤـاَيُّهَا الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا لَا تُحِلُّوۡا شَعَآٮِٕرَ اللّٰهِ وَلَا الشَّهۡرَ الۡحَـرَامَ وَلَا الۡهَدۡىَ وَلَا الۡقَلَٓاٮِٕدَ وَلَاۤ آٰمِّيۡنَ الۡبَيۡتَ الۡحَـرَامَ يَبۡـتَغُوۡنَ فَضۡلًا مِّنۡ رَّبِّهِمۡ وَرِضۡوَانًا  ؕ  وَاِذَا حَلَلۡتُمۡ فَاصۡطَادُوۡا‌ ؕ  وَلَا يَجۡرِمَنَّكُمۡ شَنَاٰنُ قَوۡمٍ اَنۡ صَدُّوۡكُمۡ عَنِ الۡمَسۡجِدِ الۡحَـرَامِ اَنۡ تَعۡتَدُوۡا‌ ۘ  وَتَعَاوَنُوۡا عَلَى الۡبِرِّ وَالتَّقۡوٰى‌ وَلَا تَعَاوَنُوۡا عَلَى الۡاِثۡمِ وَالۡعُدۡوَانِ‌ وَاتَّقُوا اللّٰهَ  ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ شَدِيۡدُ الۡعِقَابِ‏

 

Yaa-auy-yo-hul-la-zee-na-aa-ma-noo                                                                                            Laa-to-hil-loo-sha-aa-aiy-ril-laa-hay                                                                                              Wa-lush-shah-rul-ha-raa-ma                                                                                                              Wa-lul-hud-ya-wa-lul-qa-laa-aiy-da                                                                                                  Wa-laa-aam-me-na-bai-tul-ha-raa-ma                                                                                            Yub-ta-ghoo-na-fudz-lum-mir-rub-bay-him-wa-ridz-waa-naa                                                  Wa-ezaa-ha-lul-toom-fus-taa-do

Wa-laa-yuj-ray-mun-na-koom-sha-na-aa-no-qao-min                                                                Un-sood-do-koom-aa-nil-mus-jay-dil-ha-raa-may                                                                       Un-tau-ta-do                                                                                                                                            Wa-ta-aa-wa-noo-alul-bir-ray-wut-tuq-waa                                                                                  Wa-laa-ta-aa-wa-noo-alul-ith-may-wul-ood-wan                                                                      Wut-ta-qool-laa-ha-in-nul-laa-ha-sha-dee-dool-aiy-qaa-b

 

Listen, you all who have believed!                                                                                      Do not legitimize the signs of Allah                                                                                        And not the Sacred month,                                                                                                        And not the animal of sacrifice, and not the Collared,                                              And not the shelter-seekers in the Sacred House                                                        Seeking Abundance and Approval from their God.                                                    And when you are allowed, then you may go hunting

And let not the hostility of a people incite you —                                                              Because they barred you from the Sacred Mosque —                                                    That you cross the line.                                                                                                          And help each other on virtues and righteousness                                                          And do not help each other on sin and transgression                                              And you should love Allah. Indeed Allah is severe in the follow-up 

 

The Holy Qor-aan has used the Phrase Yaa-auy-yo-hul-la-zee-na-aa-ma-noo many times

  • يٰۤ — Yaa — Listen (= Be attentive; hearken; pay attention; O!)
  • اَيُّهَا — Auy-yo-ha(ul) — You all (= All addressees; entire audience; whole lot of listeners)
  • ٱلَّذِينَ — Ul-la-zee-na — Those who (= pl., m, 3rd person. Those articles, things or persons
  • اٰمَنُوۡۤ — Aa-ma-noo — They Believed (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Believed in the Holy Qor-aan; became Moslems. Accepted, acknowledged, admitted or witnessed their entry in Iss-laam. Phrase Wut-ta-qool-laa-ha …

Phrase Wut-ta-qool-laa-ha … meaning Love Allah by fearing to anger Him

 

 

 وَاتَّقُوا اللّٰهَ 

Wut-ta-qool-laa-ha

And you love Allah

 

The Holy Qor-aan has used the phrase  وَاتَّقُوا اللّٰهَ  frequently. Many meanings of the key word اتَّقُوا   used in the phrase are listed in our Commentary titled as The Righteou. The meanings of the whole phrase by different authors differ greatly. Although some works translated it as Do duty to God and Take Allah as the Shield, a great majority narrowed it down to And fear Allah.

But this site has translated the phrase as And you Love Allah and avoid angering Him. The solid reason is that a person  who loves intensely also fears angering, annoying or hurting his Beloved to the least extent by any act, gesture or word whatsoever. LOVE is the real reason. FEAR is just a result.

The result fear can’t minimize the cause which is love. Some may disagree with us but we have translated the phrase as And you Love Allah that includes the meanings of And you fear Allah.

The Holy Qor-aan has used the Phrase Wut-ta-qool-laa-ha … in many contexts

And you should Love Allah

002:197 ” Sacrifice after Hujj (Haj) and Oom-rah (Umrah) or fast for ten days if no ….  002:224 “ And know that your are going to meet him.                                                            002:232 ” Remember the blessings of Allah and know that He is the All-Knowing.      003:201 ” Believers! Be persistent, preach persistence, be ready always.                        004:002 ” Love your God Who created many members of opposite sex and respect them 005:003 ” Honor Sanctities. Grudge must not lead to hurt others. Help the good, not sin.    005:005 ” Remember Allah’s name on the hunts caught alive. Allah is swift at reckoning.  005:009 ” Testify judicially. Grudge must not lead you to do injustice. Do justice.        005:012 ” Remember blessing of Allah who cuffed hands of those who tried to hurt you.      005:036 ” And find the way to reach Him and strive in His Cause so that you prosper. 005:089 “ Eat lawfully and cleanly what Allah has provided you.                                    005:097 “ During Aihraam allowed is the hunt of sea but prohibited is the hunt of land. 005:101 ” The bad and the good are not equal even if the abundance of bad pleased you.  005:109 “ And listen. Allah does not guide the miscreants to the right road.                  005:113 “ Rather than asking if Allah has ability to send blessings from the Heavens.             064:017 “ What you are able and hear and obey and invest the best you have for yourself.

يٰۤـاَيُّهَا الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡۤا اَوۡفُوۡا بِالۡعُقُوۡدِ‌ ؕ اُحِلَّتۡ لَـكُمۡ بَهِيۡمَةُ الۡاَنۡعَامِ اِلَّا مَا يُتۡلٰى عَلَيۡكُمۡ غَيۡرَ مُحِلِّى الصَّيۡدِ وَاَنۡـتُمۡ حُرُمٌ‌ ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ يَحۡكُمُ مَا يُرِيۡدُ‏
 

 

Yaa-auy-yo-hul-la-zee-na-aa-ma-noo                                                                                                Auo-foo-bil-o-qoo-day                                                                                                                          O-hil-lut-la-koom-ba-he-ma-tool-un-aa-may                                                                                  Il-laa-maa-yoot-laa-alai-koom                                                                                                            Ghai-ra-mo-hil-liss-sai-day-wa-un-toom                                                                                        Ho-room                                                                                                                                                    In-nul-laa-ha-yah-ko-mo-maa-yo-reed

 

Listen, you all who have believed!                                                                                        Fulfil the pledges.                                                                                                                  Allowed for you are the four-legged cattle                                                                      Except what is recited upon you  (= you are told) —                                                        Other than the hunt brought down while you surely are                                              Sanctified (in the pilgrim garb or sacred House).                                                       Of course, Allah decrees what He wills.

A/t/a, ‘He pleases,’ ‘intends’ and ‘He will.’ But saying ‘His Will and plan’ as a noun, or ‘which pleaseth’ as a verb in the passive voice, is no translation of what the Holy Qor-aan has stated as a verb in the active voice)

Ref your recent post on Face Book quoting the numbering of some verses.

The numbering of verses in several Translations on the market differ particularly in those works where a translator had visibly copied, duplicated or improved upon an earlier translation in some European language. Following are some examples.

  1. Abdullah Yusuf Ali arbitrarily divided into two (2) parts what several other translation works show as verse #1 of Chap 5. Then he assigned each part as verse #1 and #2. Thus his numbering of the next 122 verses is ‘1’ more than given in other works.
  1. M Muhammad Ali arbitrarily divided into two (2) parts what several other translation works show as #173 of Chap 5. Then he assigned each part as verses #173 and #174. So his verse numbering from #174 onwards is ‘1’ more than given in other works.
  1. Several translators arbitrarily cut up last part of verse #4 of Chap 3 and added it as the first part of verse #5 as pointed out in Note 003:005 detailed at http://trueteachingsofislam.com/003-005/
  1. M Zafrulla Khan and many others preceding and following him added Bismillahirrahmanirraheemas verse #1 in 113 Soorah correctly so as shown in http://trueteachingsofislam.com/4-this-site-how-to-use-this-site/. Thus except for the Soora-Taubah #9, the numbering of verses is ‘1’ more than given in other works.

Jesus brought the scripture, the Quran 19:30, his immaculate birth recorded at 19:17-21, 19:19-21 and 3:59-60, and message at 3:48 and 13:63-64 and, miracles at 3:46 and 3:49.

His crucifixion is described in the Quran at 4:157-158 and finally his return at 43:61 in following contextualised words:

‘And (Jesus’ descent to earth) shall be known sign for the coming of the Hour, (being the Day of Judgment)’.

وَعَدَ اللّٰهُ الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا وَعَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ‌ ۙ  لَهُمۡ مَّغۡفِرَةٌ وَّاَجۡرٌ عَظِيۡمٌ

 

Wa-aa-da  ul-laa-ho  ol-la-ze-na                                                                                                          Aa-ma-noo  wa-aa-may-lo  os-saa-lay-haa-tay                                                                            La  hoom  maugh-fay-ra-toon   wa  auj-roon  aa-zee-m

 

Allah has promised those who                                                                                        Believed and practiced proper acts                                                                                  For them is forgiveness and great reward

 

  • وَعَدَ — Wa-aa-da — He promised (= v., past., s., 3rd person. Announced; appointed; assured; committed; declared earnestly and solemnly; fixed; pledged; set up in a covenant0
  • اللّٰهُ — Laa-ho … (ol) — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)

The Holy Qor-aan has used the Phrase Aa-ma-noo-wa-amay … in many places

  • ٱلَّذِينَ — Aul-la-ze-na — Those who (= pro., pl., m, 3rd person. Refers to the Believers)
  • اٰمَنُوۡا — Aa-ma-noo — They Believed (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Believed in the Holy Qor-aan; became Moslems; entered Islsaam. The Holy Qor-aan has used this word in the past tense. Some works have translated it incorrectly in the present tense and/or as a noun [O ye who believe; one author as ‘Believers’] as shown in Note 002:026c. See Commentaries Islam – 101 and Believe and Disbelieve) )
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • عَمِلُوا — Aa-may-loo … (s) — Practiced (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Acted; carried out; did; kept up; followed; led; lived out; made effort; performed; practiced; pursued; persisted in; strove; tried best; worked. The Holy Qor-aan has used this word in the past tense. Some works have translated it incorrectly in the present tense. The contradiction in such translations of the same one word عَمِلُوا as ‘did’ and ‘do’ definitely confuse a reader)
  • الصّٰلِحٰتِ — Saa-lay-haa-tay — Proper acts (= n., pl., Appropriate, befitting, correct, decent, fit, good, holy, honorable, moral, pious, proper, respectable, right, righteous, upright, virtuous or worthy acts, activities, deeds, manners, operations, practices, performances, pursuits, righteousness or works. Righteous actions which are appropriate in manner, time and place — not the likes of a soldier who stands up for a prayer during a sword-fighting battle for life and death)
  • لَ — La — For (= For the object, person, purpose or reason of; intended for; meant for; concerning; regarding; relative to)
  • هُمۡ‌ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3 rd person. Those men; they; their)
  • مَّغۡفِرَةٌ — Maugh-fay-ra-toon — Forgiveness (= n., Excusing; forgiveness; looking over; pardon; protection; salvation. Also, the granting of begging, beseeching, desiring, imploring, praying, requesting, seeking or trying to be excused, forgiven or reprieved)
  • وَّ — Wa — And (= Conj., It links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but also; more over; though; when; while; yet)
  • اَجۡرُ — Auj-roon — Reward (= n., s. Award; good result; prize; recognition; trophy.)
  • عَظِيۡمٌ — Aa-zeem — Greatest (= adj., Awesome; colossal; enormous; extreme, tremendous. See the Note 003:173a. A/t/a, ‘great’)

وَالَّذِيۡنَ كَفَرُوۡا وَكَذَّبُوۡا بِاٰيٰتِنَاۤ اُولٰٓٮِٕكَ اَصۡحٰبُ الۡجَحِيۡمِ

 

Wul-la-zee-na-ka-fa-roo-wa-kuz-za-boo-bay-aa-yaa-tay-naa                                                  O-laa-aiy-ka-us-haa-bool-ja-heem

 

And those who disbelieved and belied with our signs                                                    All are inmates of the Hell

 

The wording (except for the last word) of verse 005:011 is also the first part of 002:040

  • اَصۡحٰبُ — Us-haa-bo..(on) — Inmates (= pl., 1. Associates; companions; folks; friends; people.   2. Citizens; denizens; dwellers; families; fellows; heirs; inhabitants; inmates; live-ins; natives; occupants; occupiers; populace; population; residents; tenants.   3. Controllers; masters owners; possessors.   Often added are qualifications of’ rightfully deserving / well-deserved’)
  • ٱلۡجَحِيم — Ja-heem — Hell (= n., Blazing Fire. Purgatory; Gehenna; hell-fire. Also the hellish life in this world)

Soor-ra-tool Maa-aiy-dah                          Chapter # 005                                       سُوۡرَةُ المَائدة

Verses of the Holy Qor-aan are quoted on this site with the numbers, the first set of three being the number of Soorah (Chapter) followed by the last set of three being the number of the verse. The numbers include  بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ‏‏   as the verse #1 in every Soorah except the Soorah #9. The original Arabic word is shown first, or in Col #1. With the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful I begin.

Wa-haaj-ja-hoo-qao-mo-hoo-qaa-la                                                                                                  Aa-to-haaj-joon-ne-fil-laa-hay-wa-qud-ha-daa-nay                                                                      Wa-laa-aa-khaa-fo-maa-toosh-ray-koo-na-bay-he                                                                        Il-laa-un-ya-shaa-aa-rub-bee-shai-aa                                                                                            Wa-say-aa-rub-bee-kool-la-shai-in-il-maa                                                                                      Aa-fa-laa-ta-ta-zuk-ka-roon

 

And his (Abraham’s) people argued with him. He said,                                        “Do you argue with me concerning Allah and He has guided me.                            And I don’t fear all that you set up partners with Him                                                  Except anything that my God may choose.                                                                          My God has extended everything in Knowledge.                                                              So will you not reflect?”

In-ne-wuj-juh-to-wuj-hay-ya-lil-la-ze                                                                                                Fa-ta-rus-sa-maa-waa-tay-wul-ur-dza-ha-ne-fun                                                                      Wa-ma-aa-na-may-nul-moosh-ray-keen

 

Most certainly I have turned all my attention to Him Who                                          Created the heavens and the earth being righteous                                                      And I am not among the idolaters.

  • وَجَّهۡتُ — Wauj-jah-to — Turned attention (= v., past., Absolutely, fully or wholeheartedly attended, faced, focused, intended or turned. A/t/a, ‘set My face,’ ‘turned myself,’ ‘turned’ and ‘single-mindedly devoted the whole of my.’  But ‘I will’  in the future tense is not a translation of what the Holy Qor-aan has stated in the past tense)
  • وَجۡهِ — Wuj-hay — Face (= n., s., All, full, total or whole attention; face or the front part of human body above neck and below head including the forehead, nose, cheeks and chin. See Note 004:126. A/t/a, Attention; countenance; direction; face)
  • ىَ — Ya — My (= pro., s., 1st person., I; me; my)
  • لِلۡ — L … (il) — For / to (= Concerning, regarding; relative to; intended for; to; towards)
  • الَّذِىۡ — La-zee — He who (= s., m., 3rd person article, thing or person; he; who; which. A/t/a, Him who’)
  • فَطَرَ — Fa-ta-ra…(us) — Created (= v., past., s., 3rd person. Designed or fashioned totally without anything preexisting. A/t/a, ‘created’ and ‘originated’)
  • السَّمٰوٰتِ — Sa-maa-waa-tay — The heavens (= n., pl., All above ground or earth; clouds; firmament; heavens; rains; skies)
  • وَ — Wa … (ul) — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • الۡاَرۡضَ — Ur-dza — Earth (=1. Area; country; earth; ground; land; soil; territory. 2. Life on earth. 3. Nation; people or society in general)
  • حَنِيۡفًا‌ — Ha-nee-fun — Righteous (= s., Forever inclined towards and always bent towards the God Almighty Allah in worshiping Him. Upright Worshiper of the One and the Only One God.  A/t/a, ‘being upright, wholly to Him,’ ‘as one by nature upright,’ ‘being ever inclined to God,’ ‘being ever inclined to Allah,’ ‘Hanifa (Islamic Monotheism i.e. worshipping none but Allah Alone),’ ‘with devotion and in a most upright manner,’ ‘sincerely’ and ‘live a righteous  life’ )

Except for the 3rd word below, the  following wording is repeated in 002:136 etc.

Men who ascribe or associate and worship imaginary gods with the Almighty God. Unbelieving pagan men. See Note 004:037. A/t/a, ‘those who associate gods with Him,‘ ‘give partners to God,’ ‘who associate partners with Allah,’ ‘idolater’ and ‘those who associate partners with God’)

The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                       006:079

 

فَلَمَّا رَاٰ الشَّمۡسَ بَازِغَةً قَالَ هٰذَا رَبِّىۡ هٰذَاۤ اَكۡبَرُ‌ ۚ  فَلَمَّاۤ اَفَلَتۡ قَالَ يٰقَوۡمِ اِنِّىۡ بَرِىۡٓءٌ مِّمَّا تُشۡرِكُوۡنَ

 

Fa-lum-maa-ra-ush-shum-sa-baa-zay-ghun                                                                                    Qaa-la-haa-zaa-rub-be-haa-zaa-uk-bur                                                                                          Fa-lum-maa-aa-fa-lut-qaa-la-yaa-qao-may                                                                                In-nee-ba-ree-yoon-mim-maa-toosh-ray-koo-n

 

Then when he saw the sun shining dazzlingly                                                                  He said, ‘Here is my God. This is biggest.”                                                                          But when it disappeared, he said.” My people!                                                                  I am not liable for what you set up partners with God.”

  • بَازِغًا — Baa-zay-ghun —  Shining (= adj., Shining in re sun that shines brightly, brilliantly and dazzlingly. A/t/a, ‘rising in splendour,’ ‘rising,’ ‘rising up,’ ‘uprising,’  ‘rise with spreading light,’ ‘rise’ and ‘shining’)
  • قَا لَ — Qaa-laa — He said (= v., past, s., m, 3rd person. He said, stated or told himself. A/t/a, ‘cried’ and ‘he said to them)’
  • هَـٰذَا — Haa-zaa — Here (= Here; this; the article, thing or person present before the talker. A/t/a, ‘This is.’. But ‘Is this’ and ‘Can this be’ are questions and not a translation of what the Holy Qor-aan stated as a plane statement)
  • رَبِّ — Rub-b … (ee) — God (= The Almighty Allah who fills needs of all creatures; Cherisher; Creator; Guardian; Master; Lord Provident. The Only One Who provides all that sustains life. The Ultimate Provider of air, water, food and whatever we and all other creatures need to live and subsist. A/t/a, ‘Lord (as you assert)’
  • ىۡ — Ee — My (= pro., s., 1st person., I; me; my)
  • هَـٰذَا — Haa-zaa — This (= The article, thing or person present before the talker. A/t/a, ‘This is,’ ‘no doubt this is’ and ‘That must be my God’)
  • اَكۡبَرُ‌ — Uk-bur — Biggest (= adj., A/t/a, ‘the greatest (of all),’  ‘greatest,’ ‘greatest of all,’  ‘greater,’ ‘the biggest’ and ‘larger than the other two’)

  • لَمَّا — Lum-maa — When (= At the time. A/t/a, ‘when’)
  • اَفَلَتۡ — Aa-fa-lut — Disappeared (= v., past., s., f., 3rd person. Became invisible; dimmed; disappeared; set down. . For sun the Arabic grammar uses verbs in the feminine gender. A/t/a, ‘set,’ ‘also set’ and ‘the sun set’)
  • قَا لَ — Qaa-laa — He said (= v., past, s., m, 3rd person. Declared. See قَا لَ  above. A/t/a, ‘exclaimed’)
  • يٰۤ — Yaa — Listen (= Be attentive; hearken; pay attention; O)
  • قَوۡمِ — Qao-may — People (= A/t/a, ‘my people’)
  • اِنۡ — In — Certainly (= Absolutely; definitely; positively. A/t/a, ‘Lo!,’ ‘Most certainly,’ ‘surely’ and ‘indeed’)
  • ىۡ —  Ee — I (= pro., s., 1st person., I; me; my)
  • بَرِىۡٓءٌ — Ba-ree-yoon — Not liable for  (= n., Not accountable, answerable, blame-worthy or responsible. Also, innocent or unconnected. A/t/a, ‘free of,’ ‘free from,’ ‘clear,’ ‘am quit,’ ‘have no truck with,’ ‘(sick and) quit’ and ‘done with’)
  • مِمَّا — Mim-maa — With that (= Combination of two words. The first word  مِنۡ (min) means ‘among, from or out of the class, category, kind count or several persons or things.’ The second word  مَاۤ (maa) means ‘all that, what, whatever, any time, when, whenever.’ The combination of both words means ‘from what; out of what; concerning, regarding, relative to; thereby. A/t/a, ‘all that,’ ‘of that which,’ ‘of that,’ ‘with that’ and ‘from’)  
  • تُشۡرِكُوۡنَ‏  — Toosh-ray-koon —  You set up partners (= n., pl., You allege, ascribe, assert, associate, attribute, hold, join, set up or worship any equal or kind   of partner to the Almighty God. You become idolater, Polytheist or an Unbelieving pagan. See Note 004:037.  A/t/a, ‘giving partners to God,’ ‘you set up (with Allah),’ ye  associate (with him),’ ‘you associate with Him,’ ‘you associate with God,’  ‘you associate with Allah,’ ‘you join as partners (in worship with Allah’ and ‘your gods’)
