قَالَ يٰٓـاٰدَمُ اَنۡۢبِئۡهُمۡ بِاَسۡمَآٮِٕهِمۡ‌ۚ فَلَمَّآ اَنۡۢبَاَهُمۡ بِاَسۡمَآٮِٕهِمۡۙ قَالَ اَلَمۡ اَقُل لَّـكُمۡ اِنِّىۡٓ اَعۡلَمُ غَيۡبَ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالۡاَرۡضِۙ وَاَعۡلَمُ مَا تُبۡدُوۡنَ وَمَا كُنۡتُمۡ تَكۡتُمُوۡنَ

 

Qaa-la-yaa-aa-da-mo-um-bae-hoom-bay-us-maa-aiy-him                                                       Fa-lum-maa-umba-aa-hoom-bay-us-maa-aiy-him                                                                   Qaa-la–aa-lum-aqool-la-koom-in-nee-au-la-mo                                                                         Ghai-bus-sa-maa-waa-tay-wul-ur-dzay                                                                                         Wa-au-la-mo-ma-toob-doo-na-wa-maa-koon-toom-tuck-to-moo-n.

 

He (Allah) said, “Listen, Adam, tell them their names.”                                             Then when he informed them of their names                                                               He said, “Didn’t I tell you that I definitely know                                                             The secrets of the heavens and earth.                                                                                 And I know what you reveal and what you have been concealing.”

  • اَعۡلَمُ — Au-la-mo — Know well (= Am more aware; know more and better)
  • غَيۡبَ — Ghai-ba — Secrets (= Hidden realities; hitherto unknown; things beyond being seen; the unseen; unknown. Some translations have stated that غَيۡبَ refers to the unknown history of nations gone by. Could that also include  “the history of evolutionary stages of mankind?)
  • السَّمٰوٰتِ — Samaa-waa-tay — The Skies (= Heavens. a/t/a clouds; all above ground or earth; space)

قَالُوۡا سُبۡحٰنَكَ لَا عِلۡمَ لَنَآ اِلَّا مَا عَلَّمۡتَنَا ؕ اِنَّكَ اَنۡتَ الۡعَلِيۡمُ الۡحَكِيۡمُ‏

              

Qaa-loo-soob-haa-na-ka                                                                                                                     Laa-ilma-la-naa-il-laa-maa-ul-lum-ta-naa                                                                                 In-na-ka-un-tul-alee-mool-ha-kee-m.

 

They (the angels) said, “Glory to You.                                                                                 We have no knowledge except what you taught us.                                                          Indeed You and Only You are The All-Knowing, The Wisest.

  • الۡعَلِيۡمُ — A-lee-mo..(ol)  — All-Knowing   (= superlative form indicates the greatest, the highest, the most, and highlights that none more than Him Knows. Also: Informed to the maximum. The One with total knowledge and nothing out of sight. Knows all. Most Knowledgeable. Well-Acquainted with and Well-Aware of. See Note 001:001)
  • ٱلۡحَكِيمُ    Ha-kee-m — The Wisest (= superlative form indicates the greatest, the highest, the most, and highlights that none more than Him is Wise. Also: All-Wise. Extremely shrewd. Full of wisdom. None is wiser than Him. Who is Right always in what He does. See Note 001:001)

    اِقۡرَاۡ بِاسۡمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِىۡ خَلَقَ            ‌

Iq-rau-bis-may-rub-bay-kul-la-zee-kha-la-qua

Read with the name of your God who created everything

  • اقۡرَاۡ — Iq–rau — Read (= Convey the message; recite; proclaim; study and spread
    the word)
  • بِ — Be…(s) — In (= Literal translation and the best sense conveyed is ‘with’)
  • اسۡمُ — Is-may — Name (= The labels or means with which one is called)
  • رَّبِّ — Rub-bay — God (= The Almighty Allah who fills all needs of all His creatures; Cherisher; Creator; Guardian; Master; The Lord Provident; The Only One Who provides all that sustains life. Ultimate Provider of air, water, food and whatever we and all other creatures need to live and subsist)
  • كَ — Ka…(ul ) — You (= pro., s., m., 2nd person. You single male. The addressee of this divine message is initially the Holy Prophet s.a.w and secondarily every Moslem, in fact every human being. See the Note under 002:005)
  • الَّذِىۡ –La-zee — Who (= s., m., in 3rd person. Here the ref is to the Almighty God)
  • خَلَقَ — Kha-la-qua — He created (= Brought into being; designed from a scratch out of nothing before; every created thing; fashioned something right from its inception)

3 – Mission Statement

 Mission Statement

We appreciate the most Beneficent Merciful God who gave man the Book to read again and again, to worship Only Him and seek help from Him Alone, to guide us to the right road that reaches Him and to avoid the ways that wrongdoers chose.  Islam is the Book, the Creator’s design for man to live by and reach his apex. It is like the Code a programmer writes for his software to produce the best result.

Mankind has always faced significant humanistic challenges in its history.  Islam on the other hand has taught man total humanism – to be a humble human not faking or making gods, to be a good child, sibling, spouse, parent, friend and member of human family, to be spiritually enlightened, to genuinely respect the dignity of other faiths, to coexist with other non-human creatures on earth, to attain peace within and provide peace all around, and to ‘invite to God with wise ways and excellent exhortation by prettiest possible presentations’ (016:126). And the revelation of the Holy Qor-aan started with one simple direction “Read with the name of your God, the Provident, who created you” (096:002).

Translating any work in a different language with its own rules of grammar is not easy. Creativity that God gave to man has ‘allegedly’ been abused by many translators, dictators, generals and kings to translate, interpret and extrapolate the scriptures for selfish reasons and getting around the divine rules laid down.  “Lost in the translation” is a self-serving rule for translators to protect themselves against charges of innocent conversion, incorrect description and even a downright bad faith twisting of the original.  So this site too risks such criticism from all Extremes.  But our mission is simple.

We pray and will do the utmost to make an entry of a truthful person and seek an exit of a truthful person (017:081) and come up with the truth (017:082), the whole truth and nothing but the truth, since the moderates guide fellowmen and are themselves guided by the Messenger (002:144).  To serve said mission with humility we offer commentary on humanism taught by Qor-aan and invite others to participate in such conversations.

Those not-yet-Moslems can get straightforward access and direct links to the true teachings of Islam.  Those already Moslems but divided into hundreds of schools and sects can find, compare and evaluate what they practice, preach or profess by labeling it Islam with the originals of the Commandments and Prohibitions of Qor-aan that came for the whole mankind to get them out of the darkness to the light (014-002).  We use English since today it is the predominant language spoken and understood the world over.  After all God has never sent a messenger except with the tongue of his people to clearly explain to them the message (014-005).

Verses of the Holy Qor-aan are quoted with the numbers that include بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ‏‏ as verse #1 of 113 Soorah (Chapters), but not of Soorah #9.  The original Arabic word is shown first.  The phonetic transliteration in English is shown next and is based upon words commonly pronounced like bat, cat, sat → fate, gate, hate → bait, trait → bay, nay, say → be, he, se → pet, pet, wet → bit, fit, sit → cot, dot, rot → boot, hoot, root → bout, rout → but, cut, hut, ultimatum.  The English equivalent to the Arabic words are provided next.  Some other alternates in English used in other translations are given last.

وَ اِذۡ قَتَلۡتُمۡ نَفۡسًا فَادّٰرَءۡتُمۡ فِيۡهَا ‌ؕ وَاللّٰهُ مُخۡرِجٌ مَّا كُنۡتُمۡ تَكۡتُمُوۡنَۚ‏

 

Wa-iz-qa-tul-toom-nuf-sun-fud-da-rau-toom-fee-haa                                                          Wul-laa-ho-mookh-ray-joom-maa-koon-toom-tuk-to-moo-n.

     

And when you had killed a soul, then you disputed regarding it.                        And Allah is the discloser of what you have been concealing.

فَاِنِ انۡـتَهَوۡا فَاِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَفُوۡرٌ رَّحِيۡمٌ‏

Fa-e-nun-ta-how-fa-in-nul-laa-ha-gha-foo-roor-ra-heem

So if they stopped, then Allah is indeed Forgiving and Merciful.

اَلشَّهۡرُ الۡحَـرَامُ بِالشَّهۡرِ الۡحَـرَامِ وَالۡحُرُمٰتُ قِصَاصٌ‌ؕ فَمَنِ اعۡتَدٰى عَلَيۡكُمۡ فَاعۡتَدُوۡا عَلَيۡهِ بِمِثۡلِ مَا اعۡتَدٰى عَلَيۡكُمۡ   وَاتَّقُوا اللّٰهَ وَاعۡلَمُوۡٓا اَنَّ اللّٰهَ مَعَ الۡمُتَّقِيۡنَ‏

           

Ush-shah-rool-ha-raa-mo-bish-shah-ril-ha-raa-may                                                               Wul-ho-ro-maa-to-qay-saas                                                                                                               Fa-ma-nae-ta-daa-alai-koom                                                                                                             Fau-ta-doo-alai-hay-bay-mith-lay                                                                                                   Mau-ta-daa-alai-koom                                                                                                                       Wut-ta-qool-laa-ha-wau-la-moo                                                                                                      Un-nul-laa-ha-ma-ul-moot-ta-qee-n.

 

The Sacred Month with the Sacred Month.**                                                                     And all violations of sacred things have compensation.                                              So whoever transgressed on you                                                                                      Then you be aggressive on him with equal amount to                                             What was the aggression on you.                                                                                           And do duty to Allah and know that                                                                                   Allah definitely is with the righteous.

 * Note 002:195. The Commandment in this verse clearly lays down the following,

  1. A violation in a Sacred month may be retaliated inside that Sacred period. The goal is to allow a level plane-field and not tie your hands to strictly observe the holiness of a period when the enemy by not so restricted has all the freedom to hurt you.
  2. A permission to retaliate against him who has hit, hurt and violated you.
  3. A limit that you must not exceed the amount and extent to which you were hurt.
  4. An allowance for you to judge how much were you wronged and are entitled to avenge.
  5. A caution that Allah Who knows and sees everything will one day judge your actions.

The word  قِصَاصٌ‌  (= qay-saas) has been interpreted from the ‘Violations of sanctity of the Holy Month justify retaliation in the Holy Month’ to ‘Sacred Month merits the respect of a Sacred Month.’

Was Qor-aan revealed in one night

Holy Qor-aan revealed in one night?
(Read the whole Soora with the Commentary at 097-All)

The Almighty God Allah created Man. He knew the potential with which man was created. He designed the conduct for man to reach his best and the characteristics to evolve continuously. He warned about the dangers that would lurk on man’s way to retard his becoming a good human being. He fixed the outer perimeters as the rules of universal application and within that framework gave man the ability to discriminate between the right and the wrong. He gifted us with the ‘choice’ to be good or bad. He provided a BOOK or Code of rules and regulations for us to follow like a programmer of a software. In His infinite wisdom He kept control on how much of the Book to reveal, to whom and when — depending on how much man had evolved and grown in intellect. Thus He sent down portions of the BOOK to His messengers to convey to their fellow beings based upon their comprehension of doing what they were told. Abraham, David, Moses and Jesus are some of the prophets on who considerable portions of the BOOK were revealed. Eventually the Holy Prophet Mohammed s.a.w received the whole Book. The completion of the BOOK occurred in the form of the Holy Qor-aan 005:004 ‘Today I have completed for you your Faith and I have completed on you My Blessing and I am pleased for you with the total submission to Me as the Faith’ – اَ لۡيَوۡمَ اَكۡمَلۡتُ لَـكُمۡ دِيۡنَكُمۡ وَاَ تۡمَمۡتُ عَلَيۡكُمۡ نِعۡمَتِىۡ وَرَضِيۡتُ لَـكُمُ الۡاِسۡلَامَ دِيۡنًا‌ (=Ul-yao-ma-uk-mul-to-la-koom-dee-na-koom–wa-ut-mum-to-alai-koom-nae-ma-tee–wa-ra-dzee-to-la-ko-mool-is-laa-ma-dee-na).

Accordingly He declared in the Holy Qor-aan 097:002 that ‘Surely We revealed it in the most precious night’ اِنَّاۤ اَنۡزَلۡنٰهُ فِىۡ لَيۡلَةِ الۡقَدۡرِ (= Inna-un-zul-naa-ho-fee-lai-la-til-qud-re). He entrusted (= revealed, inspired, provided, sent, dispatched, gave, granted, laid down, lowered or poured down) those rules to the divinely inspired people, His Messengers, Prophets, Sages and Saints. That phenomenon described with the Arabic word اَنۡزَلۡ is best conveyed in English by the word ‘entrusted’ because the recipients had received His word as a trust. Initially the recipients implemented the ‘entrusted’ message by themselves practicing and professing it as the divine teachings – especially if no occasion had arisen by that time to create a precedent by a personal example of practicing the divine message. Ultimately they preached it evangelically to their audience including their families, disciples, tribes, immediate listeners and then on to their nations and even the whole wide world.

Admittedly the revelation of the Holy Qor-aan was spread over a period of 23 years. That is why its ‘revelation ‘in’ the one night of لَيۡلَةِ الۡقَدۡرِ’ has been interpreted, and quite differently because of the Arabic word فِىۡ which has several possible meanings including the following.

  • Most interpreters have translated this word for the purposes of this verse as “during, in, inside the middle of an event, time, place, people or situation,” thus interpreting that the revelation of the Holy Qor-aan was ‘begun’ and ‘completed’ in this one night.
  • Some others have interpreted it to mean that the arch-angel Gabriel visited the Holy Prophet s.a.w in this one night every year and repeated, refreshed and rehearsed all that had been revealed until that time. The last and final review of the whole Qor-aan was accomplished in said night of the last Ramdhan of the 23rd year, thus interpreting that the revelation of the Holy Qor-aan ‘begun’ in this one night was also ‘completed’ in the same night 23 years later.
  • Another possible interpretation is that the whole of the Qor-aan was revealed on the Holy Prophet s.a.w in this one night, and then on for 23 years it was revealed again and again piece-meal as the circumstances required an immediate application of some of the Commandments laid bare.
  • The believers professing in the ‘miraculous’ nature of the Holy Qor-aan insist that the revelation of the Holy Qor-aan was aimed at ending the period of spiritual darkness – after which the spiritual day-light was scheduled to spread and shine the world. The word فِىۡ in this context makes most sense by interpreting it as ‘regarding, concerning, for the sake of, in reference to; relative to, in the matter of, in reference to, relative to, or in relation to’. Such interpretation appears most plausible for showing the verse in its broadest possible scope and also in line with the verses that follow.
  1. And what (or who) will tell you what the Most Precious night is?  —       ‘وَمَاۤ اَدۡرٰٮكَ مَا لَيۡلَةُ الۡقَدۡرِ (=Wa-maa-ud-raa-ka-maa-lai-la-tool-qad-re) – (097:003).
  1. Most Precious night is better than a thousand months لَيۡلَةُ الۡقَدۡرِ ۙ خَيۡرٌ مِّنۡ اَلۡفِ شَهۡر (=Lai-la-tool-qad-re-khai-roon-min-ulfe-shah-re) – (097:004).
  1. It is until the rising of the dawn هِىَ حَتّٰى مَطۡلَعِ الۡفَجر (= hay-ya-hut-ta-mut-la-il-fuj-r) – (097:006).

Law of War

Law of War
(As provided in the Holy Qor-aan)

See our Commentary titled as Islaam – 303 – Mullah’s Jihad is no road to Peace which is the hub-post and refers to about a dozen other Commentaries related to different aspect of Jihad.

Arabic root of Hurb      حِ    ر   ب     and its derivative words refer to battle, fight or war.  Clearly distinct from that is the root of Qutl and its derivative words that refer to (a) defend, fight, oppose, protect, push back, resist or retaliate; (b) oppress or persecute; and (c) kill, murder or slay which are the only meanings that some  translations have used.

Several derivative words of both the roots of Hurb and Qutl have been used in the Holy Qor-aan numerous times.  Varying translations by different interpreters have led people to conflicting conclusions.  People who use a language day in and day out understand it. Foreigners may not fully comprehend the words and phrases of a language even after spending a lifetime in studying and speaking it.  Hence the discrepancies in conveying real, full impact of any message in a foreign language.

In the 7th century Islaam starting from a humble origin in Arabia had spread over the entire civilized world of medieval ages. Foreigners embraced Islaam and the translations and interpretations by them of the original, unchanged text in Arabic shifted, conflicted and often contradicted each other.  Recently the western media catering for its audience has by and large in all audio, video and print forms broadcast the worst-case scenarios relying on only “kill, murder and slay” (c) meanings of the word Qutl. Only a tiny portion of the media has correctly conveyed the true teachings of the Holy Qor-aan based on other meanings of the world Qutl, namely (a) defend, fight, protect, push back, resist or retaliate, and (b) oppress or persecute.

In the 19th century, above dissent properly presenting the dictates of the Holy Qor-aan and authenticated by commonsense approach was raised pretty loud by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian who founded the Ahmadiyya Movement in Islaam. He declared Jehaad – the concept of holy war built only upon the “kill, murder and slay” (c) meanings of the word Qutl – as illegal (Haraam).

In the 20th century, this view was strongly augmented in the following extracts from the West Pakistan High Court ruling in the report of the Court of Inquiry constituted under the Punjab Act II of 1954 to enquire into the Punjab Disturbances of 1953, Published by the Superintendent, Government Printing Press, Punjab. 1954. Part IV.

“As to the doctrine of Jihad, the Ahmadi view is that what is called jihad-bis-saif is permissible only in self defense and that in stating his own view on this question Mirza Ghulam Ahmad merely expounded a doctrine which is based on, and directly follows from, the several texts in the Qur’an and that he did not profess to repeal or abrogate any rule or injunction of the Qur’an” (p 192). b“Each of the verses in Soorut-ul-Kafiroon which contains thirty words and no verse exceeds six words, brings out a fundamental trait in man engrained in him since his creation while the La Ikraha verse 002:257, the relevant portion of which contains only nine words, states the rule of responsibility of the mind with a precision that cannot be surpassed. Both of these texts which are an early part of the Revelation are, individually and collectively, the foundation of that principle which human society, after centuries of conflict, hatred and bloodshed, has adopted in defining one of the most important fundamental rights of man. But our doctors would never disassociate chauvinism from Islam” (p 220).  “There are various theories about Jihad which vary from the crude notion of a megalomaniac moved by religious frenzy going out armed with sword and indiscriminately slaughtering non-Muslims in the belief that if he dies in the combat he becomes a shahid and if he succeeds in killing attains the status of a ghazi, to the conception that a Musalman throughout his life is pitted against kufr, kufr here being used in the sense of evil and wrong, and that his principal activity in life is to strive by argument and where necessary by force to spread Islam until it becomes a world religion. In the later case he fights not for any personal end but because he considers such strife as a duty and an obligation which he owes to Allah and the only recompense for which is the pleasure of Allah” (p 222).  “Generally accepted view is that (9:5) abrogated the earlier verses revealed in Mecca which permitted the killing of kuffar only in self defense. As against this the Ahmadis believe that no verse of the Qur’an was abrogated by another verse … that both sets of verses have different scopes and can stand together… that the doctrine of Nasikh and Munsukh is opposed to the belief in the existence of an original scripture” (pp 223-224).  “We are wholly incompetent to pronounce on the result to which the doctrine of Jihad will lead if, as appears from … writings produced before us including one by Maulana Abul Ala Maudoodi and another by Maulana Shabbir Ahmad Usmani, it involves the spread of Islam by arms and conquest. ‘AGGRESSION’ and ‘GENOCIDE’ are now offences against humanity for which under sentences pronounced by different International Tribunals at Nuremburg and Tokio the war lords of Germany and Japan had to forfeit their lives. And there is hardly any difference between the offences of ‘aggression’ and ‘genocide’ on the one hand and the doctrine of spread of Islam by arms and conquest on the other” (p 224).

The above extract is used in several Commentaries about different aspects of Jehaad. But like all sources of Law, the best source to find the Moslem Law of War is the Holy Qor-aan. The basic elements are outlined below with a 6-figure number – the first three digits are the Chapter # of the Holy Qor-aan, and the last three digits are the verse # of that Chapter.

HISTORY:

  • Wars started during the time of Adam, and have persisted since the dawn of human life (005:028 to 032).
  • Fighting is permitted with those who fight God and His prophets, or who create disorder (005:033 to 036)
  • Battles are really fought by God, not the people (008:018)

PREPAREDNESS:

  • Guard borders, so enemies can’t attack, infiltrate or surprise (003:201)
  • Remain ready and prepared, so enemies can’t ever surprise (008:061)

PERMISSION:

  • Beseeching accepted. Fighting back permitted.  Good news: you will win (008:010)
  • Permission granted to resist and fight back against oppression (022:040)
  • Retaliate against those who oppress, persecute or fight with you (002:191)
  • Only if they had oppressed you regarding your religion, or expelled you from your homes or helped others to exile you, then you do not befriend them. (060-010)
  • War, When and where to (002:218)
  • War allowed to repel attackers even in the Holy Mosque (002:192)
  • War allowed in the causes of Allah (004:075), (004:076), (004:077)
  • War allowed to help and rescue the feeble men, womena nd children (004:076)

OBJECTIVES :

  • War for Allah and the Reward (004:075)

WITH JUSTICE & EQUITY

  • Proportionality: fighting back the attackers but not to exceed original harm (002:191)
  • Punish in retaliation, but only as much as you suffered (016:127)
  • Never abandon justice, even in any retaliation (005:009)
  • Warnings against further and future escalating hostilities (080:020)
  • Choose partners and political alliances carefully (Also read 003:029,  003:119; 004:140; 004:145)

RULES OF ENGAGEMENT

  • If the messenger or you are expelled because you believe in Allah, your God, then war is justified (060-002)
  • Strike hard, effectively and decisively (008:013)
  • Strike hard and relentlessly, so that those behind them too learn the lesson (008:058)
  • Fight till the end. Never turn your backs (008:016 to 017)
  • Fight till mischief ends and freedom-to-worship is secured (008:040)

MARTYRDOM

  • Perpetual living for those laying down life in the causes of Allah (002:155)
  • Those killed in the cause of Allah are not dead; they live (003:170)
  • 047:005 Deeds of those killed in the cause of Allah will not be wasted (047:005)

PEACE

  • War must end when hostilities stop (002:193), (002:194)
  • Make peace as soon as you see the enemy inclined to do so (008:062)
  • Make peace, but not out of fear (047:036)
  • Honor agreements. Fulfill compacts. Respect treaties. Acknowledge truces. (009:004)

PRISONERS OF WAR (POWs)

  • POWs may be taken, but only during war and from those who come to war (008:068 )
  • POWs should be freed out of kindness or for compensation (047:005)
  • POWs should be freed by accepting compensation in cash or services (047:005)
  • POWs should be freed by accepting compensation in installments (024:034)
  • POWs should be freed by entering into marriages, when appropriate (024:034)

The Holy Prophet (s.a.w) freed 100 families of Bani Mos-tau-liq after defeating them.  He released thousands of Bani Hawazun after defeating them.  He released POWs of Badar, accepting compensation in cash or services by the literate who agreed to teach Moslems how to read and write

AGAINST WHO AND WHEN

  • If the messenger or you are expelled because you believe in Allah (060-002)
  • If they had oppressed you regarding your religion, or expelled you from your homes or helped others to exile you, then you do not befriend them (060-010)
