The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                                    003:046

 

اِذۡ قَالَتِ الۡمَلٰٓٮِٕكَةُ يٰمَرۡيَمُ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ يُبَشِّرُكِ بِكَلِمَةٍ مِّنۡهُ ۖ اسۡمُهُ الۡمَسِيۡحُ عِيۡسَى ابۡنُ مَرۡيَمَ وَجِيۡهًا فِى الدُّنۡيَا وَالۡاٰخِرَةِ وَمِنَ الۡمُقَرَّبِيۡنَۙ‏

 

Iz-qaa-la-til-ma-laa-aiy-ka-to-yaa-mar-ya-mo-in-nul                                                                 Laa-ha-yo-baush-shay-ro-kay-bay-ka-lay-ma-tim-min                                                          Hoos-mo-hool-ma-see-ho-ee-sub-no-mar-ya-ma                                                                         Wa-jee-hun-fid-doon-yaa-wul-aa-khay-ra-tay                                                                        Wa-may-nul-mo-qur-ra-bee-n.

 

When the Angels said, “Listen, Mary, surely                                                                Allah certainly gives you the joyous news of a word                                                       From Him. His name will be The Messiah Jesus son of Mary                                Honored in the Present and the Hereafter                                                                      And among those Nearest to the Almighty God.

  • مَرۡيَمُ — Mur-ya-mo — Mary (= The mother of Jesus Christ)
  • اِنَّ — In-na…(ul)– Certainly (= Absolutely; definitely; doubtlessly; indeed; positively; really surely; truly; verily)
  • ٱللَّهَ — Laa-ha — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)
  • يُبَشِّرُ — Yo-baush-shay-ro — Gives joyous news (= v., pres., Announces; bids to rejoice; gives glad tiding or good news; happily informs)
  • كِ — Kay — You (= pro., s., f., 2nd person. You single woman)
  • بِ — Bay — With (= Literally the word  بِ  means ‘with.’  But in the instant case the intent of original text is best conveyed in the English usage with the words ‘By means of or through or via’)
  • كَلِمَةٍ — Ka-lay-ma-tin — A word (= s., Assignment; command; message; mission statement ; phrase; prayer; promise; proof; sign; task; word of inspiration, regret or remorse)
  • مِّنَ — Min — From (= From)
  • هُ — Ho…(os) — Him (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to the Al mighty God)
  • اسۡمُ — Iss-mo — Name (= The labels or means with which one is called)

The coming, last, later, next or the other world)

لَا يُكَلِّفُ اللّٰهُ نَفۡسًا اِلَّا وُسۡعَهَا ‌ؕ لَهَا مَا كَسَبَتۡ وَعَلَيۡهَا مَا اكۡتَسَبَتۡ‌ؕ رَبَّنَا لَا تُؤَاخِذۡنَاۤ اِنۡ نَّسِيۡنَاۤ اَوۡ اَخۡطَاۡنَا ‌ۚ رَبَّنَا وَلَا تَحۡمِلۡ عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِصۡرًا كَمَا حَمَلۡتَهٗ عَلَى الَّذِيۡنَ مِنۡ قَبۡلِنَا ‌‌ۚرَبَّنَا وَلَا تُحَمِّلۡنَا مَا لَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِهٖ‌ ۚ وَاعۡفُ عَنَّا وَاغۡفِرۡ لَنَا وَارۡحَمۡنَا اَنۡتَ مَوۡلٰٮنَا فَانۡصُرۡنَا عَلَى الۡقَوۡمِ الۡكٰفِرِيۡنَ‏

 

Laa  yo-kul-lay-fo  ol-laa-ho  nuf-sun  il-laa  woos-aa-haa                                                         La  haa  maa  ka-sa-but  wa  alai  haa  maa  uk-ta-s-but                                                              Rub-ba  naa  laa  to-aa-khiz  naa                                                                                                         In  na-see  naa  auo  akh-tau  naa                                                                                                     Rub-ba  naa  wa  laa  tah-mil  alai  naa  iss-run                                                                            Ka  maa  ha-mul-ta  hoo  alul  la-zee-na  min  qub-lay  naa                                                      Rub-ba  naa  wa  laa  to-hum-mil  naa  maa  laa  taa-qa-ta  la  naa  bay  he                          Wa  u-fo  un-naa  wa-ugh-fer  la  naa  wa  ur-hum  naa                                                                Un-ta  mao-laa  naa  fa  un-soor  naa  alul  qao-may  il-kaa-fay-ree-n

 

Allah does not burden any soul beyond its capacity.                                                     For it is what it earned.  And against it is what it earned.                                         God of us all, please do not take us to task                                                                    When we err forgetfully or err intentionally.                                                            God of us all, and please do not load upon us a burden                                                 Like You had loaded it upon those before us.                                                                  God of us all and do not load upon us for which we have no strength.                  And pardon us. And forgive us. And have mercy on us.                                          You are our protecting Master. So, help us against ungrateful persons.

 

The Rule in verse 002:187 in seven (7) words is repeated in verse 006:153 in six (6) words

  • وُسۡعَ — Woos-aa — Capacity (= Ability to bear; prowess; scope; what is bearable)
  • هَا — Haa — Its (= pro., s., f., 3rd person., Refers to aforesaid soul)
  • لَ — La — For (= The benefit, credit or reward for; requited or rewarded due to; receives every good; the good results)
  • هَا — Haa — It (= pro., s., f., 3rd person., Refers to aforesaid soul)
  • مَاۤ — Maa — What (= All that; whatever; whatsoever. A/t/a ‘every good’)
  • كَسَبَتۡ — Ka-sa-but — It earned (= Achieved; deserved; harvested; incurred; merited; reaped; secured; won)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)

  • رَبَّ — Rub-ba — GOD / LORD (= The Almighty Allah who fills all needs of all creatures. Cherisher. Creator. Guardian. Lord Provident. Master. The Only One Who provides all that sustains life. Ultimate Provider of air, water, food and whatever we and all other creatures need to live and subsist. See 001:002  This name of God followed by the word  نَا  (naa) for ‘us or our’ has been translated quite inconsistently as ‘Lord” (in verses 002:287, 003:009, 003:193, 003:194 and other places) and ‘Our Lord’ (in verses 003:010 among other places)  
  • نَآ — Naa — All of us  (= pro., pl., 1st person. We / Us)
  • لَا — Laa — No, not (= Absolute denial; never; not at all; total negation)
  • تُؤَاخِذۡ — To-aa-khiz — Take to task (= v., Arrest; be angry condemn; disgrace; humiliate; punish. A/t/a, Catch; grab; seize; pounce upon)

Deniers; disbelievers; faithless; heretics, infidels; non-believers; rejecters of the Faith; resistors to God; unbelievers. Also, those who stand against the Faith of Islam. Some translators have limited this word to mean only those who deny, disbelieve, refuse or reject the Faith of Islam, belief in Allah and the Holy Qor-aan, and become Moslems. قَالُوا ادۡعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ يُبَيِّنۡ لَّنَا مَا هِىَۙ اِنَّ الۡبَقَرَ تَشٰبَهَ عَلَيۡنَا ؕ وَاِنَّـآ اِنۡ شَآءَ اللّٰهُ لَمُهۡتَدُوۡنَ‏

             Qaa-lood-ola-naa-rub-ba-ka-yo-buy-yun-la-naa-maa-hay-ya–in-nul-ba-qa-ra-ta-shaa-ba-ha-alai-naa–wa-in-naa-in-shaa-ul-la-ho-la-moh-ta-doo-n.

            They said, “Call for us your God to explain for us what she is.   The cows certainly look alike to us.  And we certainly will if Allah willed (= God-willing) be guided.”

قَالُوا ادۡعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ يُبَيِّنۡ لَّنَا مَا لَوۡنُهَا ‌ؕ قَالَ اِنَّهٗ يَقُوۡلُ اِنَّهَا بَقَرَةٌ صَفۡرَآءُۙ فَاقِعٌ لَّوۡنُهَا تَسُرُّ النّٰظِرِيۡنَ‏

               Qaa-lood-ola-naa-rub-ba-ka-yo-buy-yun-la-naa-maa-lao-no-haa-qa-la-in-na-hoo-ya-qoo-lo-in-na-haa-ba-qa-ra-toon-suf-raa-oon-faa-qay-oon-lao-no-haa-ta-soor-roon-naa-zay-ree-n.

              They said, “Call for us your God to explain for us what is its color.” He (Moses) said, “He says, ‘Surely it is a cow, bright yellow, rich in color, gladdens the on-lookers.”

قَالُوا ادۡعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ يُبَيِّنۡ لَّنَا مَا هِىَ‌ؕ قَالَ اِنَّهٗ يَقُوۡلُ اِنَّهَا بَقَرةٌ لَّا فَارِضٌ وَّلَا بِكۡرٌؕ عَوَانٌۢ بَيۡنَ ذٰلِكَ‌ؕ فَافۡعَلُوۡا مَا تُؤۡمَرُوۡنَ‏

Qaa-lood-ola-naa-rub-ba-ka-yo-buy-yun-la-naa-maa-hay-ya
Qaa-la-in-na-hoo-ya-qoo-lo-in-na-haa-ba-qa-ra-toon
Laa-faa-ray-dzoon-wa-laa-bik-roon
Awaa-noon-bai-na-zaa-lay-ka–fuf-aloo-maa-tou-ma-roo-n.

They said, “Call for us your God to explain for us what is it.”
He (Moses) said, “He says, ‘Surely it is a cow,
Neither very old nor very young
Fully grown between that. So you do what you are told.”

وَاِذۡ قَالَ مُوۡسٰى لِقَوۡمِهٖۤ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ يَاۡمُرُكُمۡ اَنۡ تَذۡبَحُوۡا بَقَرَةً ‌ ؕ قَالُوۡآ اَتَتَّخِذُنَا هُزُوۡا ‌ؕ قَالَ اَعُوۡذُ بِاللّٰهِ اَنۡ اَكُوۡنَ مِنَ الۡجٰـهِلِيۡنَ‏

.

Wa  iz  qaa-la  moo-saa  lay  qao-may  he
Inna  ul-laa-ha  yau-mo-ro  koom  un  tuz-ba-hoo  ba-qa-ra-ton
Qaa-loo  aa  tut-ta-khay-zo  naa  ho-zo-waa
Qaa-la  aa  oo-zo  bay  il-laa-hay  un  aa-koo-na  may-na  ul-jaa-hay-lee-n

.

And call to mind when Moses announced to his people,
“Surely Allah orders you that you sacrifice a cow.”
They said, “Do you make a mockery of us (= Are you kidding us)?”
He (Moses) replied, “I seek protection of Allah that I be among the ignorant.”

  • الۡجٰـهِلِيۡنَ — Ja-hay-lee-n — Ignorant (= Foolish; unlettered; unschooled; unsophisticated)

*Note 002:068: The phrase   اَعُوۡذُ بِاللّٰهِ   is translated as God-forbid or Heavens forbid as well.    The concept of invoking the protection of Allah has been repeated (see our Commentary Repetitions in the Holy Qor-aan have benefits) in several verses including the following.

ذٰ لِكَ مِنۡ اَنۡۢـبَآءِ الۡغَيۡبِ نُوۡحِيۡهِ اِلَيۡكَ‌ؕ وَمَا كُنۡتَ لَدَيۡهِمۡ اِذۡ يُلۡقُوۡنَ اَقۡلَامَهُمۡ اَيُّهُمۡ يَكۡفُلُ مَرۡيَمَ

وَمَا كُنۡتَ لَدَيۡهِمۡ اِذۡ يَخۡتَصِمُوۡنَ

 

Zaa-lay-ka-min-un-baa-il-ghai-bay-noo-he-hay-alai-ka                                                           Wa-maa-koon-ta-la-dai-him-iz-yool-qoo-na                                                                                Uq-laa-ma-hoom-auy-yo-hoom-yuk-fa-lo-mar-ya-ma                                                            Wa-maa-koon-ta-la-dai-him-iz-yaukh-ta-say-moo-n.

 

This is an information from the Unseen. We reveal it to you.                                     And you were not with them when they were casting                                                     Their pens as to who will look after Mary.                                                                      And you were not with them when they were arguing.

 

  • ذٰلِكَ — Zaa-lay-ka — This (= Here; refers to an aforesaid fact, person or statement; it was because; right here; such is this; that is how it is)
  • مِنۡ — Min — From (= From the class, category, count, kind, parts, persons or out of)
  • اَنۡۢـبَآءِ — Un-baa-aiy — Information (= pl., Account; chronicle; mystic; narration of events; news; spiritual; stories; tidings. Some translations have added the word ‘important’ before the above meanings)
  • لۡغَيۡبِ — Il-ghai-bay — The Unseen (= Hidden invisible or secret realities hitherto unknown. The unknown. The unseen. Things beyond being seen. Also, refers to the unknown history of nations gone by)
  • نُوۡحِيۡ — Noo-he — We reveal (= v., Disclose; explain; inform; inspire; show)
  • هِ — Hay — It (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to aforesaid news)
  • اِلَيۡ — E-lai — To (= In the direction of; on; towards)
  • كَ — Ka — You (= pro., s., m., 2nd person. You single male. The addressee of this divine message is initially the Holy Prophet s.a.w and secondarily every Moslem, in fact every human being. See the Note under 002:005)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • مَاۤ — Maa — What (= All that; whatever; whatsoever)

  • ھُمۡ‌ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Refers to the contestants for being the guardian to Mary)
  • اَيُّ — Auy-yo — Who (= Which; which one)
  • ھُمۡ‌ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Refers to the contestants for being the guardian to Mary)
  • يَكۡفُلُ — Yuk-fa-lo — Look after (= Act as custodian or guardian; be charged with; be in charge of; take care; take charge; take responsibility of. One translation has added the words: “Have Mary in his charge (to arrange her marriage)”
  • مَرۡيَم — Mar-ya-ma — Mary (= The mother of Jesus Christ)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conjunction that connects words, phrases or clauses)
  • مَاۤ — Maa — Not (= Absolutely not; no; never)
  • كُنۡتَ — Koon-ta — You were (= Have been since the past; were continuously)

  • يَخۡتَصِمُوۡنَ — Yaukh-ta-say-moo-n — Arguing (= v., pres., Contending; disputing; fighting for quarreling; wrangling with each other about that)

 

* Note:00:045. This site gives simple straightforward translation of the original text. A departure from such meanings strikes out as a work of translator’s imagination. One example of this kind is “(The exalted assembly of the angels) were engaged in a discussion (over the issue of Muhammad being entrusted with the Divine mission).” Such addition appears untenable for following among other reasons.

  1. The pronoun هِمۡ (= him meaning the priests contending to be Mary’s guardian) obviously refers to aforesaid pronoun ھُمۡ‌ (= hoom meaning the aforesaid priests).
  1. Angels are not competent to discuss God’s decision to entrust the Holy Qor-aan to the Holy Prophet a.w and his mission to introduce Islam to the world.
  1. The time-line in the verse started with Mary’s guardianship. She gave birth to Jesus some 20 years later. Jesus died 33 years later. The Holy Prophet, a.w., started receiving the Holy Qor-aan in 711 AD. So يَخۡتَصِمُوۡنَ refers to what priests discussed regarding an issue then presently debated and not of something that happened over 750 years later.

يٰمَرۡيَمُ اقۡنُتِىۡ لِرَبِّكِ وَاسۡجُدِىۡ وَارۡكَعِىۡ مَعَ الرّٰكِعِيۡنَ‏

 

Yaa-mar-ya-mooq-na-tee-lay-rub-bay-kay                                                                                   Wus-jo-dee-wur-ka-ee-ma-urraa-ke-een.

 

 Listen, Mary, be obedient to your God and prostrate                                              And bow down along with those who bow down in worship

 

  • يٰۤ  — Yaa — Listen (= O!; be attentive; pay attention)
  • مَرۡيَمَ — Mur-ya-mo(oq) — Mary (= The mother of Jesus Christ)

وَاِذۡ قَالَتِ الۡمَلٰٓٮِٕكَةُ يٰمَرۡيَمُ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ اصۡطَفٰٮكِ وَطَهَّرَكِ وَاصۡطَفٰٮكِ عَلٰى نِسَآءِ الۡعٰلَمِيۡنَ‏

 

Wa-iz-qaa-la-til-ma-laa-aiy-ka-to                                                                                             Yaa-mar-ya-mo-in-nul-laa-hus-ta-faa-kay                                                                                 Wa-tah-ha-ra-kay-wus-ta-faa-kay-alaa-nay-saa-il-aa-la-mee-n.

 

And call to mind when the Angels said,                                                                           “Listen, Mary, most certainly Allah has chosen you                                                       And cleansed you and preferred you over women of the worlds.”

He (Zacharias) said, “My God, set up for me a sign.”                                                    He (Allah) said, “Your sign is that you do not talk to people                                       For three days except by signs                                                                                                And you remember your God a lot                                                                                       And praise Him night and day.”

 

  • قَالَ — Qaa-la — He said (= v., past, s., m., 3rd person. Asked; beseeched; declared; invoked; prayed; requested; specified; submitted; supplicated; stated; told)
  • رَبِّ — Rub-bay — God (= The Almighty Allah who fills needs of all creatures; Cherisher; Creator; Guardian; Master; Lord Provident. The Only One Who provides all that sustains life. The Ultimate Provider of air, water, food and whatever we and all other creatures need to live and subsist)
  • اجۡعَلۡ — Ij-ul — Set up (= v., pres., s., 2nd person. Appoint; depute; give; grant; lay upon; make; promise; raise; send; setup; turn; vouchsafe)
  • لِّىٓ — Lee — For me (= Combination of two words.  لِ  means ‘for the benefit, purpose or reason; with intent to or object of so that; towards. And  ى  refers to ‘me, in the first person)
  • اٰيَةً — Aa-ya-ton — Sign (= s., 1. Manifestation; message; narrative; revelation; verse.  2. Command; direction; evidence; law; order.  3. Corroboration; indication; instruction; lesson; proof; portent; pointer; symbol; token. 4. Every element to create the crystal clear picture leading to an absolute conviction. 5. Argument, part or portion that highlights or points to something)
  • قَالَ — Qaa-la — He said (= v., past, s., m., 3rd person. Announced; answered; replied; responded; specified; stated; told)
  • اٰيَتُ — Aa-yaa-to — Sign (= s., Manifestation; proof; token. See  اٰيَةً  above)
  • كَ — Ka — You (= pro., s., m., 2nd person. Reference is to Zacharias)
  • اَلَّا — Ul-laa — Do not / will not (= Can’t, don’t or won’t. Not; fail to; refuse to; will not. Also, so that.  This one word is a combination of two words.  The 1st word is  اَنۡ  (un) and means that. The 2nd word is  لَا  (laa) and means never, no or not at all. Combined together they mean ‘so that’ or ‘this result is due to the reason that’)
  • تُكَلِّمَ — To-kul-lay-ma(un) — You talk (= v., pres., s., 2nd person. Admonish; address; converse; convey; communicate; say; speak; utter words)
  • النَّاسَ — Naa-sa — The people (= Folks; human beings; mankind; men; nations)
  • ثَلٰثَةَ — Tha-laa-tha-ta — Three (= Numerical number 3)
  • اَيَّامٍ — Auy-yaa-min — Days (= pl., End of several periods, terms or times; juncture)
  • اِلَّا — Il-laa — Except (= Apart from; besides; excluding; save; unless)
  • رَمۡزًا — Rum-zaa — Signs (= Gestures; indications by some means besides talking; signals; sign language)
  • وَ — Wa…(uz) — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • اذۡكُرْ — Uz-koor — Remember (= v, pres., s., 2nd person. Attend to; beseech; bear in, call to or keep in mind; beseech; contemplate; ponder; praise; pray; recall; reflect; think of the time, event, occasion or opportunity)

  • وَّ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • سَبِّحۡ — Sub-Baih — Praise (= Celebrate the praise; exalt; express appreciate; extol; glorify; praise; sing praising hymns; worship
  • بِ — Bay….(il) — With (= About; entitled to; of; in ref to; relative to; suited for)
  • الۡعَشِىِّ — Aa-she-yay — Night (= Early evening; hours or time after sunset. A/t/a, “(I)n the afternoon“)
