The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                                     002:004

 

الَّذِيۡنَ يُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ بِالۡغَيۡبِ وَ يُقِيۡمُوۡنَ الصَّلٰوةَ وَمِمَّا رَزَقۡنٰهُمۡ يُنۡفِقُوۡنَۙؕ

 

Aul-la-ze-na  yoe-may-noo-na  bay  il-ghai-bay
Wa   yo-qee-moo-na  us-sa-laa-ta
Wa  mim-maa  ra-zauq-naa  hoom  yoon-fay-qoon 

 

Those who believe in the Unseen                                                                                            And establish the Prayer                                                                                                            And spend out of what We gave them.

 

  • ٱلَّذِينَ — Aul-la-ze-na — Those who (= pl., m, 3rd person. Refers to those articles, persons or phenomenon or things in masculine gender)    
  • يُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ  — Yo-me-noon — Believe (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. Enter faith; follow the Holy Qor-aan, Iss-laam and are Moslems. See Commentary Believe and Disbelieve)
  • بِ — Bay … (il) — In (= The best translation of the word بِ is ‘with’ but some contexts may warrant its translation as ‘in’)
  • الۡغَيۡبِ — Ghai-bay — The Unseen (= n., Invisible; beyond human sight or vision)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., Links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; also; but; moreover; though; when; whereupon; while; yet)
  • يُقِيۡمُوۡنَ  — Yo-qe-moo-na … (us) — Establish (= v., pres., m., 3rd person. Attend, comply, conform, do, enforce, establish, firm up, keep, maintain, observe, offer, practice or uphold Prayers with all dictates and  integrity, congregationally, constantly, continually, consistently, fully, regularly and steadfastly. See Note 002:044)
  • الصَّلٰوةَ — Sa-laa-ta — The prayer (= n., This worship consists of five daily payers mandated upon Moslems and precedented by the Holy Prophet, s.a.w., who also practiced another two optionally. See Note 002:044b)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., Connects words, phrases or clauses. See وَ   above) 
  • مِمَّا — Mim-ma — Out of what (= Combination of two words. The first word  مِنۡ (min)   means among, from or out of the class, category, kind count or several persons or things. The second word  مَاۤ  (maa) means all that, what, whatever, any time, when,      whenever. Combining both words means, for what, out of what, concerning, regarding, relative to, thereby)
  • رَزَقۡنٰ — Ra-zauq-naa — We provided (= v., past., pl., 1st person. Bestowed. Blessed. Conferred. Delivered. Donated. Endowed. Entrusted. Furnished. Gifted. Gave. Granted. Provided. Supplied. The past tense verb for single 3rd person is converted into that of plural 1st person as explained in Note 001:007. The part  نَآ  (naa) is a pro., pl., 1st person and used with God’s name it is the authoritative way a higher-up talks to a subordinate)
  • هُمۡ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m.,  3rd person. Refers to aforesaid believers)
  • يُنفِقُونَ — Yoon-fay-qoon — They spend (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. Contribute, donate, expend, give, invest, lay out, put or use. The Holy Qor-aan has used this word for above acts done for any charity, good cause, noble purpose or poor person)  

 

* Note 002:004:The word  يُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ   (yo-may-noo-na) as used in this word provides the foundation of what Iss-laam  means and includes the following.

  1. Those who admit, affirm, approve, confirm, concur, corroborate, declare, give \ evidence; profess, testify or witness to have become Moslems.
  2. Those who get protected, saved, given peace, made safe, provided security, rescued or secured against fear.

This verse lays out three of the 5 Acts of worships or pillars of Islam — which every Moslem is mandated to practice.

 

** Note 002:004a: The word  الصَّلٰوةَ  (Saa-laa-ta) refers to two things.

  1. It’s beseeching, invoking, praying, requesting, supplicating and worshiping the Almighty God. This act involves praying night and day in everything with full focus and attention.
  2. It refers to one specified It was mandated upon Israelites [verses 002:044 and 002:084]. Later it was prescribed for Moslems as well [verse 002:111]. It is included in the Five basic worships mandated upon Moslems [See our Commentary ISLAM – 104 — 5 Acts of worships or pillars of Islam].

Soo-ra-tool-Faa-tay-ha                                      سُوۡرَةُ الفَاتِحَة                                      Chapter # 001

Verses of the Holy Qor-aan are quoted on this site with a 6-digit number; the first three digits tell of Soorah (Chapter) and the last three tell of verse. Numbering includes بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ‏‏ as verse #1 in every Soorah except Soorah #9. The phonetic transliteration in English is based upon words commonly pronounced like bat, cat, sat → fate, gate, hate → bait, trait → bay, nay, say → be, he, she → pet, pet, wet → bit, fit, sit → cot, dot, rot → boot, hoot, root → bout, rout → but, cut, hut, rut. An Arabic word with the vowel Fatah is best shown with a ‘u’ as in cut, rut, hut, but letter ‘a’ is often placed before ‘u’ to make it doubly sure that it is read as in cause, pause and clause and not with the sound of  ‘oo’ as in hoot, root, shoot or put. All Arabic words are translated in American English and are followed by alternates which other   translators have used.

The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                   001:001                                  

○بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِمِ‏‏

Bay   iss-may  il-laa-hay  ir-rah-maa-nay  ir-ra-hee-m
(= Bis-mil  laa-hir  rah-maa-nir  ra-hee-m)

With the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful I begin.

(Beginning, commencing, starting)

  • بِ — Bay … (is) — With (= This Arabic word literally means ‘with’ but some contexts may warrant its translation as ‘in’)
  • سۡمِ — Iss-may … (il) — The name of (= The way to be addressed or called)
  • اللهِ — Laa-hay … (ir) — Allah (= The Almighty God; the One Only worthy of worship)
  • الرَّحۡمٰنِ — Rah-maa-nay … (ir) — The Most Beneficent (= adj., Compassionate. Gracious. None more than Him benefits. As n: The One Who fully, totally and wholly benefits all, to the maximum without any  condition, limitation or restriction. The Greatest and     Highest Benefactor Who wills goodness and mercy to all His creation See Note 001:001) 
  • الرَّحِيۡمِ — Ra-hee-m — The Most Merciful (= adj., Superlative form indicates the Greatest Merciful. Merciful Forever. The word floodlights that none more than Him shows kindness and mercy, continually, incessantly, like perpetually coming waves from oceans)

      

** Note: 001:001. This verse was revealed 114 times. It is the First (1st) in 113 of the 114 Chapters (Soorah) of the Holy Qor-aan. It’s not the 1st verse of Chapter 9 but has appeared twice in Chapter 27 — once as its 1st and again as its 31st (027:031). 

This verse is numbered 1st (#001) of a Soorah on this site like many translators have done. Our numbering of verses differs from those who have ignored numbering the aforesaid as the 1st.

A Hadeeth of the Holy Prophet s.a.w) lists 99 Names of Allah originated from the Holy Qor-aan and any Name not shown there but on the list is deduced from a verb or noun used there.     

This verse names two Attributes of the Almighty God (059:025). This site provides the principal characteristics of Attributes concisely, but others may have verbalized them differently.

Translators have magnified the ordinary meanings of a word of an Attribute by using its superlative form and often adding prefixes like All, Ever, Forever, Most, Very, Well, etc.

For example, an Attribute in verse 004:111 has been translated as follows.

  • ‘Merciful’ by 5 authors: Maulana Muhammad Ali, Maulawi Sher Ali, Malik Ghulam                                     Farid, Marmaduke Pickthall and N J Dawood. 
  • ‘Most Merciful’ by 3 authors: Abdulla Yusuf Ali, M Muhsin Khan and Taqi-ud-Din.
  • ‘Ever Merciful’ by 2 authors: Muhammad Zafrulla Khan and Amatul Rahman Omar.
  • ‘All-compassionate’ by 1 author: John Arberry.
  • ‘All-Merciful’ by 1 author: Dr Ahmad Zidan.

Our Translation when compared with other works – printed, published and sold in the market — shows minor to major differences like the above in verses including 004:105.

The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                                   001:002

اَلۡحَمۡدُ لِلّٰهِ رَبِّ الۡعٰلَمِيۡنَۙ‏

Aul-haum-do  lay  il-laa-hay  raub-bay  il-aa-la-meen

All real thanks are due to Allah, the Lord Provident to the Universe.

  • اَلۡ — Aul — The (= The Arabic word ‘ul’ expresses two distinct meanings. 1.The Particular one. 2 – All in a category; real; total. Combined together they convey only the best, the tops)
  • حَمۡدُ — Haum-do — Thanks (= Appreciation; gratitude; praise)
  • لِ — Lay … (il) — For (= Concerning; regarding; relative to; with intent, reason regard to; for the attention, benefit, object, purpose or reason of)
  • اللّٰهِ — Laa-hay — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)
  • رَبِّ — Raub-bay … (il) — GOD / LORD (= The Almighty Allah who fills all needs of all His creatures. Cherisher. Creator;. Guardian. Lord Provident. Master. The Only One Who provides all that sustains life. Ultimate Provider of air, water, food and whatever we and all other creatures need to live and subsist)
  • الۡعٰلَمِيۡنَۙ‏ — Aa-la-meen — The universe (= n., pl., As an attribute of God Almighty the word implies no limits. It means the Universe, all His creations, all that exists in whole Universe, all that has life, and Mankind. See Note 001:002)

** Note 001:002: The word الْعٰلَمِيْنَ  ‏  means the worlds, the whole wide world, the Universe, all that Almighty God has created. The word is used in this and many other verses including 002:132,  006:072,   006:163,  026:017,  026:023,  026:048,  026:078, 026:099,  026:110,  026:128,  026:146,  026:165,  026:181,  026:193,  039:076,  040:066, 040:067,  059:017 and 081:030.

Some translations limited the meanings of the word الْعٰلَمِيْنَ‏ in relation to man to a Time and Place like the age or nations of the time, contemporaries in towns or territory of a known period, and people in given cities or countries. Besides various translations of this word in  005:116, 006:087 and 006:091, following are those  of verse 003:034:                                    — M Zafrulla Khan narrowed it down to mean only the “people of their times.”                      — Amatul Rahman Omar verbalized it for “all people of time.”                                                    — Dr Al-Hilali and Dr Khan included the entire “mankind and jinn of their times.”                — N J Dawood expanded it further by saying “all His creatures.”

The Holy Qor-aan has used the attribute رَب  with the word   الْعٰلَمِيْنَ‏  in many places such as 001:002, 006:046, 007:055, 010:011, 039:076, 040:066, 059:017, etc.

الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِۙ ؕ‏‏

Aur-rah-maa-nay  ir-ra-heem

The most Beneficent, the most Merciful

  • الرَّحۡمٰنِ — Aur-rah-maa-nay … (ir) — The Most Beneficent (= The One who fully, totally and wholly benefits all, to the maximum with no condition, limitation or restriction. Compassionate. Gracious)
  • الرَّحِيۡمِ — Aur-ra-heem — The Most Merciful (= The One who fully, totally and wholly showers mercy to the maximum, again and again, continually, indefinitely and perpetually like the incoming waves from the oceans)

Master of the Day of Judgment

اِيَّاكَ نَعۡبُدُ وَاِيَّاكَ نَسۡتَعِيۡنُؕ‏

Ee-yaa  ka  nau-bo-do  wa  ee-yaa  ka  naus-ta-een

Only You we worship. And only You we beseech

  • اِيَّا — Ee-yaa — Only (= Alone; excluding any and all others)
  • كَ — Ka — You * (= You, a single male. Ref is to the Almighty God)
  • نَعۡبُدُ — Nau-bo-do — We worship (= v., pres., pl., 1st person. Including the worshipper’s parents, children, family, friends and others, we serve, supplicate, like to be cloned and take on the color)
  • وَ — Wa — And  (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally)
  • اِيَّا — Ee-yaa — Only (= Alone; excluding any and all others)
  • كَ — Ka — You (= You, a single male. Ref is to the Almighty God)
  • نَسۡتَعِيۡنُ — Naus-ta-een — We beseech (= Ask, beg, entreat, implore, pray or request for help, assistance, guidance and succor always in all places)

اِهۡدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الۡمُسۡتَقِيۡمَۙ‏

Aeh-day  naa  us-say-raa-ta  ul-moos-ta-qee-ma

Please God! Guide us on the right road

  • اِهۡدِ — Aeh-day — Guide (= v., Coddle on correct course; direct or take accurately  towards the best way; give the best direction; lead on linier lines; put on proper path; show the right road)
  • نَا  — Naa … (us) — Us (= pro., pl., m & f., 1st person.  Us all)
  • الصِّرَاطَ — Say-raa-ta … (ul) — Road (= n., Course; direction; lines; path; route; way)
  •  الۡمُسۡتَقِيۡمَ — Moos-ta-qee-ma — Right (= adj., Acceptable; appropriate; accurate; best; correct; exact; precise; proper; right; straight; suitable; truthful.  The shortest distance between two specific points (of GOD Almighty Who created and His creation man)        is always the straight line, perfect path and right road by which man can reach his Creator)

** Note 001:006. The words  صِّرَاطَ  and  مُسۡتَقِيۡمَ   used in the verse 001:006 are man’s prayer to be put on the correct cause, linear lines, proper path or right road. These words (some without the  ال  before them and some with other variations) are repeated in several verses including 002:143,   002:214,   003:052,    003:102,  004:069,  004:176,  005:017,  006:040,  006:088, 006:127, 006:154,  006:162, 007:017, 036:005, 036:062, 043:044,  043:065,  067:023, etc. They demonstrate God’s gift to anyone He chooses by setting him up on such line, path, road or way.

صِرَاطَ الَّذِيۡنَ اَنۡعَمۡتَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ  ۙ‏ غَيۡرِ الۡمَغۡضُوۡبِ عَلَيۡهِمۡ وَلَا الضَّآلِّيۡنَ

 

Say-raa-ta  ul-la-ze-na  aun-aum-ta  alai  him                                                                                Ghai-ray  il-maugh-dzoo-bay  aa-lai  him  wa  laa  udz-dzaal-leen

 

The way of those on whom You conferred blessings                                                      Not of those who incurred wrath, and not of those who go astray.

 

  • صِرَاطَ — Say-raat … (ul) — Way (= Course; direction; lines; path; road; route)
  • ٱلَّذِينَ — La-zee-na — Those who (= pl., m., 3rd person. All folks, groups, generations, nations and people in the world)
  • اَنۡعَمۡتَ — Aun-aum-ta — You conferred (= v., past., s., 2n person. Awarded, bestowed, blessed. gave, gifted, granted or landed blessings, favors, good things, honors or rewards. The word refers to the Almighty God)
  • عَلَيۡ — Alai — On (= Above; for; over; to; upon)
  • هِمۡ— Him — Whom (= pro., pl, m.,  3rd person. Refers to persons blessed)
  • غَيۡرِ — Ghai-ray … (il) — Not of those (= Besides; other than)
  • الۡمَغۡضُوۡبِ — Maugh-dzoo-bay –Incurred wrath (= Got, punished, inflicted, received, struck or subjected to anger, displeasure, fury, chastisement or torment)
  • عَلَيۡ— Alai — On (= Above; for; over; to; upon)
  • هِمُ — Him — Them / Those (= pro., pl, m.,  3rd person. Those who incurred wrath)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally)
  • َلَا — La … (udz) — Not (= Never; not at all; total and absolute denial)
  • الضَّآلِّيۡنَ — Dzaal-leen — Gone astray (= n., pl., Astray; erring; in error; misguided. Those who had gone astray, lost the way, or took the wrong path, road or turn or went off the track)

Note 001:007: Most of the verb-words are a combination of two parts. Its main operating part is for the 3rd person. Its second part is for a pronoun for 1st, 2nd or 3rd person which converts the main operating part from being for a 3rd person to that of a 1st, 2nd or 3rd person.

The pronoun part may come before the main operating part of the word. For example the word  عبد  is for a 3rd person in the past tense and means He worshipped. But a  نَ  before it converted it to  نَعۡبُدُ  (nau-bodo) which is for the plural 1st person and means We worshipped.

The pronoun part may come after the main operating part of the word. For example the word  انعم nis for a 3rd person in the past tense and means He blessed. But a  تَ  after it converted it to   اَنۡعَمۡتَ  (aun-aum-ta) which is for the single 2nd person and means You blessed.

The Holy Qor-aan 022:018

اِنَّ الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا وَالَّذِيۡنَ هَادُوۡا وَالصّٰبِـــِٕيۡنَ وَالنَّصٰرٰى وَالۡمَجُوۡسَ وَالَّذِيۡنَ اَشۡرَكُوۡۤا ‌ۖ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ يَفۡصِلُ بَيۡنَهُمۡ يَوۡمَ الۡقِيٰمَةِ‌ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَىۡءٍ شَهِيۡدٌ‏

In-nul-la-zee-na-aa-ma-noo-wul-la-ee-na-haa-doo-wus-saa-be-ee-na-wun-na-saa-raa-wul-ma-joo-sa-wul-la-ee-na-ush-ra-koo-in-nul-laa-ha-yuf-se-lo-bai-na-hoom-yao-mul-qe-yaa-ma-tay–in-nul-laa-ha-ala-kool-le-shai-in-sha-heed.

Surely those who believed and those who became Jews and Sabians and Christians, and Magians and those who were idolaters, indeed Allah is going to decide among them on the Day of Judgment. Certainly Allah is a witness on all things.

.

اِنَّ الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا وَالَّذِيۡنَ هَادُوۡا وَالصَّابِـُٔـوۡنَ وَالنَّصٰرٰى مَنۡ اٰمَنَ بِاللّٰهِ وَالۡيَوۡمِ الۡاٰخِرِ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحًـا فَلَا خَوۡفٌ عَلَيۡهِمۡ وَلَا هُمۡ يَحۡزَنُوۡنَ○‏

.

In-na  ul-la-zee-na  aa-ma-noo  wa  ul-la-zee-na                                                                                  Haa-doo  wa  us-saa-bay-oo-na  wa  un-na-saa-raa                                                                          Maun  aa-ma-na  bay  il-laa-hay  wa  ul-yao-may  il-aa-khay-ray                                                  Wa  aa-may-la  saa-lay-haun  fa                                                                                                                Laa  khao-foon  aa-lai  him  wa  laa  hoom  yauh-za-noon

.

Surely those who believed and those who were                                                                Jews and Sabeans and Christians                                                                                            Whoever believed in Allah and the Later Day                                                                          And acted righteously have then                                                                                                  No fear upon them. And they do not grieve.

  • اٰمَنُوۡۤ — Aa-ma-noo — They Believed (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Believed in the Holy  Qor-aan; became Moslems. Accepted, acknowledged, admitted, or witnessed their entry in Iss-laam. See Note 002:026c)
  • وَ  — Wa … (ul) — And (= Conj., It links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but;  also; more over; though; when; while; yet)
  • ٱلَّذِينَ —  Aul-la-zee-na — Those who (= pl., m, 3rd person. See  ٱلَّذِينَ  above. Refers to Jews)

  • الۡيَوۡمِ — Yao-may … (il) The Day (= n., Period. Time. The period between two sunrises.  Also, the period between sunrise and the sunset)
  • الۡاٰخِرِ — Aaa-khay-ray — Later (= n., Coming; end; last; yet to come. Since the word الۡيَوۡم means ‘day’ and الۡاٰخِرِ  means ‘yet to come’, joined together the phrase الۡيَوۡمِ الۡاٰخِرِ  means The Judgment Day, The End Day and The Resurrection)

رَبَّنَا لَا تُزِغۡ قُلُوبَنَا بَعۡدَ إِذۡ هَدَيۡتَنَا وَهَبۡ لَنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ رَحۡمَةً‌ۚ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلۡوَهَّابُ

God of us all! Please let not our hearts go astray                                                              After You have guided us.                                                                                                        And grant us mercy from You Alone.                                                                              You and only You are the Greatest Granter.

Briefly, اِنَّ (in-na) means exclusively, clearly, surely, etc.  كَ  (ka) and اَنۡتَ (un-ta) are pronouns for a 3rd person in masculine gender. This phrase emphasizes that only God Almighty has the attributes that follow it)
  • ٱلۡوَهَّابُ — Wah-haab — Granter (= superlative form indicates the biggest, the greatest and he highest highlighting that none more than Him is the Giver and Granter of blessings and bounties beyond measures. ٱللَّهُ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ٱلۡحَىُّ ٱلۡقَيُّومُ

Al-laa-ho-laa-elaa-ha-il-la-ho-wul-huy-yoo-quy-yoom

Allah! There is no God except Him, the Living, the Lasting.

The construction of next five words is in 002:256, 003:003, 004:088

  • اللّٰهُ — Al-laa-ho — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)
  • لَا — Laa — No (= Absolute denial; never; no; not at all; total negation)
  • اِلٰهَ — Elaa-ha — God (= Worthy of worship)
  • اِلَّا — Il-laa — Except (= Apart from; excluding; other than; save)
  • هُوَ — Ho-wa — Him (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to the Almighty God. This word in common parlance is pronounced as hoo by ignoring the vowel ka-sa-rah on its last word. The Phrase Allaa-ho-aa-hud meaning Allah is One shows some other ways also that the Holy Qor-aan repeates its message about the Oneness of God)
  • الۡحَـىُّ — Ul-huy-yo…(ol) — The Living (= superlative form indicates the greatest, the highest, the most, and highlights that none more than Him is Alive and Active. Everlasting. Ever-living. Lives by Himself. Self-subsisting. By whom all subsist)
  • الۡقَيُّوۡمُ — Quy-yoom — The Lasting (= superlative form indicates the greatest, the highest, the most, and highlights that none more than Him is Well-Established. Eternal. Existing forever. Long lasting. Perpetually there to help others. Protecting others. Self-sustaining. Sustains Himself)

Prayers from the Holy Qor-aan

Bismillahirrahmaanirreheem 001:001 (Starting with the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the Most Merciful) is the first, most compact and most comprehensive prayer provided in the Holy Qor-aan. Several scholars, interpreters and writers have written volumes detailing the meanings of this prayer.

  • 006:015 – You say – I am ordered to be the first of those who submit to God.
  • 006:016 – You say – I fear the punishment of the Awful Day if I disobey my God.
  • 006:018 – God’s Rule – If Allah brings you a harm, then no one can remove it except Him.  And if He brings you a good, then He is the Controller of all things. See also 010:108 and 027:063.
  • 006:020 – You say – He Alone is worthy of worship; I am way away from those who set up partners to Him.

  • 007:090 – Shoaib – God of us all, Your knowledge covers everything. We put our faith and trust in Allah. God of us all, please open up by deciding really (in equity, fairness, justice and truth) the things between us and our people.  And You are the Best of the Openers and Deciders.
  • 007:126 – Pharaoh’s court – God, we have turned to You.
  • 007:127 – Pharaoh’s court – God, grant us persistence and bring us death in a total surrender to You.
  • 007:144 – Moses – I turn to you in repentance and am the first of the believers.
  • 007:156 – Moses – God, please do not ruin us because of what some fools among us did.
  • 007:156 – Moses – God, please forgive us and show us mercy.
  • 007:157 –  Moses – God, ordain for us the best in this life and the hereafter.

  • 010:058/059 – Mankind – From your God has come to you an exhortation and a cure for what is inside your hearts, and a guidance and mercy for the believers. Say,all that has come by God’s grace and blessings.  So let them enjoy all this; it is much better than what they hoard.
  • 010:086 – Moses’ nation – In Allah we trust. God of us all, please save us from the object to test the wrongdoers.
  • 010:087 – Moses’ nation – By Your mercy save us from the disbelievers.
  • 010:089 – Moses – God, please destroy our enemy’s wealth and strike at their hearts.
  • 010:105 – You say – I do not worship those that you worship besides Allah. Instead I worship Allah Who controls and causes you death.  And I have been directed to be among the Believers.
  • 010:107 – Everyone – Never pray to anyone besides Allah; they can’t benefit you or harm you.
  • 010:108 – God’s Rule – If Allah touches you with a harm, then no one can remove it.  If He decides to bring you a good, then none can repel His blessings. See also 006:018 and 027:063.
  • 010:110 – You – Follow what is revealed to you and be persistent until Allah decides.  And He is the Best of the judges.
  • 011:042 – Noah – With Allah’s name may this boat sail and land.
  • 011:044 – Noah – Today there is no protector from Allah’s decree except anyone whom He shows mercy.
  • 011:046 – Noah –  God, my son is in my family. And Your promise is true. And You are the Best decision-maker.
  • 011:048 – Noah – God, I seek your protection from asking for a thing I do not  know, and unless You forgive me and show me mercy I will be one of the losers.
  • 011:052 – Hoo-d – My reward comes from Him Who created me.
  • 011:057 – Hoo-d – I put my faith and trust in Allah Who is my Provider and your Provider.
  • 011:062 – Sualeh – Seek His forgiveness; then turn to Him remorsefully. Surely my God accepts prayers very fast.
  • 011:073 – Abraham’s wife – Am I going bear a child and I am an old woman and this man my husband is an old man?
  • 011:074 – Angels – Are you  surprised at Allah’s decree? Allah’s mercy and His blessings are on you, the people of the House. He is Praiseworthy, Glorious.
  • 011:089 – Sho-aib – I only intend to make  improvements I can and I have no ability except by Allah’s help; in Him I trust and to Him I turn.
  • 011:091 – You – Seek forgiveness from your God and turn to him.  Certainly my God is Magnificently Merciful and Extremely Loving.
  • 011:113 – In re Moses – You and those who have repented along with you take a firm stand as  directed, and do not cross the line.
  • 011:116 – Moses – Be steadfast. Allah does not waste the reward of those who do good.
  • 011:122 – Believers – Say to those who do not believe that you do things from your perspective and we do from ours.
  • 011:124 – Believers – Worship Him. Have faith and trust in Him. God is aware of what you do.
  • 012:019 – Jacob – I seek Allah’s help against all that you state.
  • 012:068 – Jacob – The decision-making rests with Allah. I put my faith in Him.
  • 012:087 – Jacob – I submit complaint of my sadness and my grief to Allah.
  • 012:099 – Joseph – I seek for you the forgiveness of my God, the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
  • 012:102 – Joseph – God, You gave me power and taught me how to interpret the events.  The Creator of heaven and earth!  You are my best Friend in this life and the Hereafter; give me death in total obedience to You and join me with the righteous.
  • 012:109 – You say – My way is this.  Seeing things full well I and my followers call towards Allah, Glory to God. I am not  of those who ascribe partner to Him.
  • 013:015 – God’s Rule – Directed to Him are all sincere prayers.
  • 013:027 – God’s Rule – Allah spreads out or limits the provisions for anyone He wills.
  • 013:028 – You say – Allah lets him go astray whomever He wills, and guides to Himself whoever turns to Him.
  • 013:029 – Believers – Isn’t it a fact that the remembrance of Allah comforts ailing hearts?
  • 013:030 – Believers – Happiness and an excellent home are for those who have believed and are engaged in doing the right things.
  • 013:031 – You say – He is my God.  There is no God except Him.  In Him I put my trust. And to Him I turn.
  • 013:037 – You say – I am directed to worship Allah.  And I ascribe no partner to Him. To Him I call and towards Him is my return.
  • 014:012 – Messengers – Those who believe should repose their trust in Allah.
  • 014:013 – Messengers – Those who trust anyone should repose their trust in Allah
  • 014:036 – Abraham – God, please make this town a place of peace.  Also 002:127

  • 017:080 – You say – Work hard with it (the Holy Qor-aan) at night;  soon God would elevate you to a coveted position.
  • 017:081 – You say – God, please enter me in my affairs with appropriate, equitable, fair, genuine, honest, justified and truthful entries and exit me out of my affairs with appropriate, equitable, fair, genuine, honest, justified and truthful exits; and You Yourself assign me a mighty helping power.
  • 017:082 – You say – Truth has come.  Lies have gone.  The lie always vanish.
  • 017:086 – You say – The Divine Spirit always comes with an order from my God.
  • 017:097 – You say – Allah is quite sufficient as a witness between you and me.
  • 017:109 – Believers – Glory to God; the promise of our God is always fulfilled.
  • 017:111 – You say – Call upon Allah or the Most Beneficent, the beautiful names are His.

  • 018:011 – Cave men – God of us all, please show us mercy and put us the right track in all our affairs, jobs, tasks and hings we do.
  • 018:015 – Cave men – God of us all is the Almighty God of the heavens and earth. If we pray to any god besides Him then we would have spoken an a calumny.
  • 018:024/025 – You say – Never say “I will do this tomorrow” unless you add “if God wills.”
  • 018:025 – You say – And remember your God if you forgot to do so upfront and say: My God will soon lead me to a way that is closer to the right road than even this.
  • 018:039 – Believer – Allah is my God and I do not ascribe any partner to Him.
  • 018:040 – An idea – On entering one’s valuable asset or harvest and thanking God for the blessings say, “As Allah wills.  There is no power except with the grace of Allah; especially if you saw me less than you in property and progeny (chattels and children which are the two biggest blessings of this life).”
  • 018:070 – An Idea – Make me steadfast by God’s grace and never disobey God in anything.
  • 019:005 – Zachariah – God, my bones have weakened and old-age has lit up on my head and I have never been disappointed in my prayers to You.
  • 019:006 – Zachariah – God, I fear my relatives after me and my wife can’t produce; so please give me an heir.
  • 019:048 – Abraham – Soon I will seek my God’s forgiveness for you; He has always been very Gracious to me.

  • 020:026-036 – Moses – God, please broaden my mind, make my job easy, grant me eloquence so people can understand me, assign me a helper from within my family, my brother Aaron,  and strengthen me with him and join him in my mission so we both may extol You a lot and remember You a lot.
  • 020:106 – You say – My God will soon crush this hurdle into pieces and blow away its dust.
  • 020:115 – You say – My God, please add to my knowledge.
  • 020:131 – Believers – Glorify God by praising Him before the sunrise and before the sunset and in early hours of the night and at both ends of the day so that you really may become happy.
  • 021:005 – A prophet – My God knows everything stated in heavens and earth.
  • 021:084 – Job – A harm has come to me and You are the most Merciful.
  • 021:088 – Zoon-noon – There is no God except You, the Holiest! I have been in the wrong.
  • 021:090 – Zachariah – God, please never leave me alone and You are the Best company.
  • 021:113 – You say – God, please decide based upon he truth. The only help sought against what you allege is of our God, the Most Beneficent.
  • 022:007 – God’s Rule – Allah gives life to the dead. He indeed controls everything.
  • 022:069 – You say – Allah knows best all that you do.
  • 023:027 – Noah – God, please help me because they treat me as a liar.
  • 023:029 – Noah – God, thank You for rescuing us from the nation of wrongdoers.
  • 023:030 – Noah – God, please land me a blessed landing and You are the Best to bring to a safe and successful landing.
  • 023:073 – God’s Rule – He is the Best of the providers.
  • 023:095 – You say – God, please save me from being among the nation of wrongdoers.
  • 023:098/099 – You say – God, I seek Your protection from Satanic urges and from them even appearing to us.

  • 023:117 – God’s Rule – The Real Sovereign is Allah; there is no god except Him, the Most Exalted, the Lord of the Glorious Throne.
  • 023:119 – You say – God, please forgive and show mercy; and You are the most Merciful.
  • 024:017 – Any victim – God, You are holy; this allegation is a big fat lie.
  • 024:052 – Believers – We have heard and we have obeyed (Also see 002:286) and they  are the successful.

  • 025:029/030 – Reprobate – I wish I did not take so and so as a friend because he misled me away from the Reminder after it had reached me and the Satan has always deserted man.

  • 025:032 – God’s Rule – Your God is sufficient as the Guide and the Helper.
  • 025:059 – You say – Put your faith and trust in the One Living Who never dies.  Glorify Him with His praise and He is sufficient in knowing His servants’ sins.
  • 025:066/067 – Men of God – God, please save us from the long-lasting torment of Hell which is a bad place to stop at for a while or to live there for a long term.
  • 025:075 – Men of God – God, please make our spouses and children an apple of the eye and make us a model-leader for the righteous.
  • 025:078 – You say – What does my God care for you if you did not pray.  You rejected the Truth.  So the punishment has got stuck to you.
  • 026:022 – Moses – God gifted me a sound decision-making and made me one of the messengers.
  • 026:051 – Pharaoh’s Court – Now we turn to our God.
  • 026:052 – Pharaoh’s court – We look forward to our God forgiving our mistakes since we have been the earliest of the believers.

  • 027:041 – Solomon – This blessing is out of the abundant grace of my God to test  me whether I thankfully use it or ungratefully abuse it.  Whoever acts gratefully does it for his own self.  Whoever acts ungratefully will find that my God then is  the One Far-Above-Any-Need, Extremely Generous.
  • 027:045 – Sa-baa – God, I wronged myself. I surrender along with Solomon to the Almighty Allah, the Lord Provident of the universe.
  • 027:063 – God’s Rule – Who answers the call of the distressed when he calls Him and He gets rid of the bad and makes you the successors to the earth?  Is there anyone worthy of worship besides Allah?  How little is that you remember Him. See also 006:018 and 010:108.
  • 027:080 – You – Put your faith in Allah.
  • 028:015 – Moses – We gave him judgment (decision-making and wisdom) and knowledge.  This is how We reward those who do good.
  • 028:017 – Moses – God, I wronged myself; please forgive me.  So We forgave him.  Indeed He is the Most Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Prayer to turn a new leaf.)
  • 028:018 – Moses – God, since You have blessed me, I won’t ever protect the criminals.

  • 028:023 – Moses – I hope my God will soon guide me to the right road.

  • 028:088 – God’s Rule – Pray and call to your God and do not ascribe partners to Him.
  • 028:089 – You – Don not pray to anyone besides Allah; there is no God besides Him.
  • 029:031 – Lot – God, please help me against the mischief-mongers (the corrupt and the wicked).
  • 031:013 – Looqman – Whoever acts gratefully does that for himself.  Whoever acts ungratefully then Allah certainly is the One Far-Above-Any-Need, Praise-worthy.

  • 039:039 – You say – Allah is sufficient for me. Those who trust anyone else should really trust Him.
  • 039:062 – God’s Rule -Allah rescues the righteous by granting them success;  no  harm touches them and no  grief comes to them.
  • 040:008 – Angels – God, please forgive those who repented and followed Your direction and save them from the punishment of hell.
  • 040:009 – Angels – God of us all, please enter them in the Gardens of Eternity that You had promised them and also those  their fathers, spouses and children wh0 mended their ways.  You certainly are the Mightiest, the Wisest.
  • 040:014 – God’s Rule – He shows you His signs and sends down for you provisions from the sky (food and your other needs from sources you cannot see). None pays heed except those who turn to Him.
  • 040:015 – God’s Rule – Pray exclusively to Allah even if the disbelievers hate it.
  • 040:045 – Believers -I entrust my task to God; He surely sees to His servants.
  • 040:056 – God’s Rule – You persevere. Allah’s promise is true. Seek forgiveness for your wrongs and glorify your God by thanking Him night and day.
  • 040:057 – God’s Rule – You seek protection of Allah; He is All-Seeing All-Hearing.
  • 040:061 – God’s Rule – You pray to Me. I accept your calls quickly.  Those who are too arrogant to worship Me will certainly enter Hell as individuals despised.
  • 040:066 – God’s Rule – He is Living. There is no God except Him. Pray to Him exclusively. All thanks are due to Allah, the Lord Provident to the Universe. (Also see 001:002 & 017:112)
  • 040:067 – You say – I have been directed to submit to the Lord Provident to the Universe.
  • 041:030 – Disbelievers – God, please show us those who misled us from among the Jinn and men. We will put them both  under feet so that they become the lowest.

And enjoy the paradise you were promised. We are your protecting friends in this life and in the Hereafter. And therein will be for you whatever you wish from the cores of your hearts. And therein will be for you whatever you ask. A very special gift descending from the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.”

Soo-ra-tool-Ba-qa-rauh                               Chapter # 002                                  سُوۡرَةُ البَقَرَة

Verses of the Holy Qor-aan are quoted on this site with a 6-digit number; the first three digits tell of Soorah (Chapter) and the last three tell of verse. Numbering includes بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ‏‏ as verse #1 in every Soorah except Soorah #9. The phonetic transliteration in English is based upon words commonly pronounced like bat, cat, sat → fate, gate, hate → bait, trait → bay, nay, say → be, he, she → pet, pet, wet → bit, fit, sit → cot, dot, rot → boot, hoot, root → bout, rout → but, cut, hut, rut. An Arabic word with the vowel Fatah is best shown with a ‘u’ as in cut, rut, hut, but letter ‘a’ is often placed before ‘u’ to make it doubly sure that it is read as in cause, pause and clause and not with the sound of  ‘oo’ as in hoot, root, shoot or put. All Arabic words are translated in American English and are followed by alternates which other   translators have used.

The Holy Qor-aan                                         002:001                                       ○ بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ‏‏

                                Bay  iss-may  il-laa-hay  ir-rah-maa-nay  ir-ra-hee-m                                                                     (= Bis-mil  laa-hir  rah-maa-nir  ra-hee-m)                                    

With the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful I begin.

  • بِ — Bay … (is) — With (= The best translation of the word بِ is ‘with’ but some  contexts may warrant its translation as ‘in’)
  • سۡمِ — Iss-may … (il) — The name of (= The way to be addressed or called)
  • اللهِ — Laa-hay … (ir) — Allah (= The Almighty God; the One Only worthy of worship)
  • الرَّحۡمٰنِ — Rah-maa-n … (ir) — The Most Beneficent (= adj., Compassionate. Gracious. None more  than Him benefits. As n: The One Who fully, totally and wholly benefits all, to the maximum without any  condition, limitation or restriction.   • الرَّحِيۡمِ — Ra-hee-m — The Most Merciful (= adj., Superlative form indicates the Greatest Merciful. Merciful Forever. The word floodlights that none more than Him shows kindness and mercy, continually and incessantly like perpetually coming ocean waves)

The Holy Qor-aan        067-026

وَيَقُولُونَ مَتَىٰ هَـٰذَا ٱلۡوَعۡدُ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَـٰدِقِينَ

Wa-ya-qoo-loo-na-ma-taa-haa-zul-wau-do-in-koon-toom-saa-de-quee-n

And they say,  “When will this promise be (filled) if you were truthful.”  **

  • وَ          Wa                     And                 (= Additionally; also; although; but; in addition to; while; yet)
  • يَقُولُونَ    Ya-qoo-loo-na Say                  (= 1- Beseech; demand; invoke; object; pray; request; 2- Announce; broadcast; convey; declare; inform; preach; profess; reply; specify; state; tell)
  • مَتَىٰ       Ma-taa              When               (= At what time or situation will become a reality, come to pass, happen, materialize or precipitate)
  • هَـٰذَا        Haa-za…(l)       This                 (= The article, thing or person present before the talker)
  • ٱلۡوَعۡدُ      Wau-do           Promise           (= Announcement; earnest assurance; guarantee; pledge; threat)
