* Note 002:194.  This verse for the third time repeats how and when the war must end.   Permission (002:192) to war initiated in the Sacred Mosque lasts حَتّٰى (hutta) until peace returns.    Proclamation (002:193) ending war is absolute and has no conditions of ifs or buts attached to it.    Pronouncement (002:194) terminating the permission to war is immediate when hostilities stop.   Prolonged negotiations, elaborate agreements or surrendering treaties are not needed to end war.   Purpose, specified duration, nature and end of war are all pre-determined before wars ever start.   See our Commentary Law of War.

* Note 002:192.    Some Translators have applied this section to the Ho-dai-be-yah Pact.     In the year 6th Hijri, the Holy Prophet s.a.w came to Mecca with his followers to perform Hujj.     Mecca residents who disbelieved and controlled Kauba denied the Moslems to do that worship.    The prospective pilgrims having won other battles were confident to win another war in Mecca.    They were adamant to fight their way to do the Hujj but the Holy Prophet s.a.w preferred peace.    The peaceful truce was concluded though many Moslems there equated the Pact to be a defeat.     Treaty terms favored Meccans, sent Moslems back, and promised to allow them Hujj next year.   The peaceful pact paved way to a successful Moslem victory of Mecca next year without a fight.   This verse even if not revealed around Ho-dai-be-yah affirmed not to war in the Holy Mosque.   This verse foretold that the future would bring incidents when the direction herein must be used.     History shows that the miscreants have created disorders at the Sacred Mosque during the Hujj.    The disorders caused stampedes and commotions that killed hundreds of the innocent pilgrims.   This verse provides a solution to that problem that will recur despite best effort by the Moslems.   It marks the end of a chain of events, talks and negotiations to stop violations and restore peace.   Negotiated settlements are preferred as exhorted among other places in the verse 002:197

* Note 002:192a. The words ثَقِفۡتُمُو  in 002:192 and  وَجَد تُّمُو 004:090  merit solid attention. The translation ‘you found’ of these two words is very similar as their meanings closely overlap.  One entails being found as a result of some effort, pursuit or search carried out for the purpose. The other conveys discovery or accidental find like in plain view with no special search for it.  Their real translation with the preceding command is ‘You fight them wherever you found them.’  Such translation has bothered many of those Not-yet-Moslems who look for fodder to criticize.  But the meanings of the word  قتل  (qa-ta-la) (002:062 and 002:073) clearly nullifies such invalid criticism.

The Holy Qor-aan has used several words derived from the root قَ  ت   لَ . Its primary are given in our Commentary LAW – Jihad – Is It Fighting. Each derivate word carries a different shade of the inherent meanings of the root.

Each noun has a distinctive nuance that must be reflected accurately when translating it whether it was an attack, battle, carnage, combat, depriving, enmity, fight back, homicide, massacre, mayhem, oppression, opposition, persecution, resistance, retaliation, slaughter, striving, struggle, war or suppression.

Each verb reveals whether the doer was one, two or many persons, male or female in gender, and did the act in the past, or is doing at the present or will do in future.

Take the example of translations of a verb in the past tense by one man. The accurate meanings are he defended, opposed, pushed back, resisted, strove, struggled. The menacing meanings are he battled, destroyed, killed, murdered, slaughtered, warred. The context dictates whether to add inimically, intentionally, willfully, with premeditation.

Reproduced below is Note 002:191b.

** Note 002:191b.  This verse — or for that matter any other verse of the Holy Qor-aan — DOES NOT allow, authorize, permit, justify, or warrant killing any other human being without reason.  The verse 002:073 narrates the Israelites killing something or someone and then tried to conceal it.  The verses 002:191 to 002:194 allows fighting limited to the specified extent, place and timings.  The verses 002:218 and 002:219 prescribed fighting to suppress only persecutions or transgression. The verses cited in our Commentary Law of War show the perimeters within which war is legal.

  1. To deny, disobey, reject, refuse to follow or renounce the faith, belief in Allah, the Holy Qor-aan, Islaam and become Moslem.
  1. To become a blasphemer, disbeliever, faithless, heretic, impious, infidel, ingrate, non-believer, pagan, rejecter of, resistor to, or unbeliever in God.

Soo-ra-tool-Ba-qa-rauh                               Chapter # 002                                  سُوۡرَةُ البَقَرَة

Verses of the Holy Qor-aan are quoted on this site with a 6-digit number; the first three digits tell of Soorah (Chapter) and the last three tell of verse. Numbering includes بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ‏‏ as verse #1 in every Soorah except Soorah #9. The phonetic transliteration in English is based upon words commonly pronounced like bat, cat, sat → fate, gate, hate → bait, trait → bay, nay, say → be, he, she → pet, pet, wet → bit, fit, sit → cot, dot, rot → boot, hoot, root → bout, rout → but, cut, hut, rut. An Arabic word with the vowel Fatah is best shown with a ‘u’ as in cut, rut, hut, but letter ‘a’ is often placed before ‘u’ to make it doubly sure that it is read as in cause, pause and clause and not with the sound of  ‘oo’ as in hoot, root, shoot or put. All Arabic words are translated in American English and are followed by alternates which other   translators have used.

(===)

The Holy Qor-aan                                         002:001                                       ○ بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ‏‏

With the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful I begin.

(Beginning, commencing, starting)

  • بِ — Bay … (is) — With (= The best translation of the word بِ is ‘with’ but some  contexts may warrant its translation as ‘in’)
  • سۡمِ — Iss-may … (il) — The name of (= The way to be addressed or called)
  • اللهِ — Laa-hay … (ir) — Allah (= The Almighty God; the One Only worthy of worship)
  • الرَّحۡمٰنِ — Rah-maa-n … (ir) — The Most Beneficent (= adj., Compassionate. Gracious. None more  than Him benefits. As n: The One Who fully, totally and wholly benefits all, to the maximum without any  condition, limitation or restriction. The Greatest and Highest Benefactor Who wills goodness and mercy to all His creation. See Note 001:001)
  • الرَّحِيۡمِ — Ra-hee-m — The Most Merciful (= adj., Superlative form indicates the Greatest Merciful. Merciful Forever. The word floodlights that none more than Him shows kindness and mercy, continually and incessantly like perpetually coming ocean waves)

اُولٰٓٮِٕكَ عَلٰى هُدًى مِّنۡ رَّبِّهِمۡ وَاُولٰٓٮِٕكَ هُمُ الۡمُفۡلِحُوۡنَ

O-laa-aiy-ka  alaa  ho-daum  min-r  raub-bay  him
Wa  o-laa-aiy-ka  ho-mo  ol-moof-lay-hoon.

All of these are on a Guidance from their God, the Provident.
And all of them are the Successful.

  • اُولٰٓٮِٕكَ — O-laa-aiy-ka — All of these (= Acts. facts, items, persons or things)

  • مِّنۡ — Min … (r) — From (= From the class, category or count of; out of)
  • رَبِّ — Rub-bay — GOD / LORD (= The Almighty Allah who fills needs of all creatures; Cherisher; Creator; Guardian; Lord Provident; Master; The Only One Who provides all that sustains life. • هِمۡ — Him — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Refers to aforesaid believers)

The text in the next four (4) words is repeated in many verses                        Including 002:00, 003:105, 007:009, 030:039, 064:017, etc.

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; also; but; additionally; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)

  • هُمُ — Ho-mo … (ol) — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Refers to aforesaid believers)
  • الۡمُفۡلِحُوۡنَ — Moof-lay-hoon — The Successful (= n., pl., Achievers; champs; prosperous; triumphant; victors; victorious; winners. See Note Note 002:006)

Note 002:006. The word  الۡ  before the word  مُفۡلِحُوۡنَ   pinpoints that the word   الۡمُفۡلِحُوۡنَ  is a noun, and not a verb and that’s why its translation as a verb in present or future tense is not right. “The Successful” people as defined in a 6-step description [023:002 to 012] resembling an 8-step description [070:023 to 036] are those ‘who pray’ and will be ‘honored’ in Paradise.

Note 002:005.   The word  كَ  is a pronoun for a male in 2nd person. The Holy Qor-aan used it frequently.  Initially the addressee of that word is the trusted messenger is Holy Prophet Mohammed (s.a.w). “In reality through him, his followers” [mgf’s Note 3250] have been shown that way to be righteous.  Thus every Moslem and in fact every human being is the addressee of that blessed divine message.  Really anyone fortunate enough to read and practice its teachings is an addressee by his Creator.  Truthfully the One Only God gave the only one message to Man before he developed conflicts in it.  The contradictions professed by clergymen are man-made regulations, and not God-sent Rules.  Common sense to understand is that God had prescribed the same one conduct for all His people.  Black, brown, red, white, Jews, Christians, Hindus, or Moslems all will be judged by one measure.  And eventual even-handed adjudication dictates that all humans be assigned similar things to do.  Dictating man to do contradictory things but judge him by a single criterion would appear unfair.  Almighty God is the Fairest of all Judges who gave adequate advance info how He will judge.  He laid down one uniform criteria for all and addressed them directly by you in the second person.  He had His Commands written down so that few can say that the message had not reached them.  Similar interpretation is attached to the word Qool (قُلۡ) that has preceded several Commandments. The direction initially to the Holy Prophet Mohammed, s.a.w, really is a direction to every human.  That is why the Holy Qor-aan is  The Most Read Book In The World.

The Creator framed certain Rules of Universal Application by which man has got to live.   He made (002:023) the sky as canopy, the earth as bed and sent water from skies to grow food for him.   He chose to tell man the divine Rules of Universal Application designed for his betterment. by Him.   He gave, granted, lowered, provided and poured down those rules on chosen people to pass them on.   He used (002:144) those trusted persons as the witnesses to ensure honest delivery of all those rules.   He entrusted the knowledge of those rules to said Messengers and Prophets as trusted letter-carriers.   He inspired in those holy men a part of the Divine Plan that contemporary man could comprehend.   He eventually delivered His Plan fully in the Holy Qor-aan, the whole Completed Book (005:005).   He selected a man to be the universal Leader of the whole mankind as their genuine representative.   He in His Infinite Wisdom chose the most qualified person to be Apex of Prophet-hood (033:041).   He revealed the Book to the Holy Prophet Mohammed (s.a.w) addressing mostly in the 2nd person.   He widened His Commands to cover all who would learn, practice and preach the Divine Message.   He cited several natural elements and illustrated that He had not created them in vain (003:192).   He showed that the Rules of Universal Application were laid down to benefit and not harm man.   Sun shines and warms; light travels in straight line; gravity pulls; we all are bound to live by them.   We are subject to those realities whether we are believers or not.

* Note 002:005a. Some people don’t know (002:119) why does not the Almighty God talk to them directly. Really the Creator knows what are the most appropriate rules by which all His creation must live. In His infinite wisdom He has always entrusted His message to prophets to pass on to the others. The process covered under  اُنۡزِلَ  (oon-zay-la), اَنۡزَلۡتُ (un-zul-to) or  نَزَّلۡنَا   (nu-zul-naa) is entrustment. He inspires, reveals, provides, pours, sends, dispatches, grants, lays, gives or lowers down Rules. He appoints any of the people He chooses to be His Messengers, Prophets, Apostles or Divines. That phenomenon is best described as entrustment since the word reaches the recipients as a trust. The Prophets initially receive the divine revelations or the Holy entrustment from God Almighty. Then they practice upon the entrusted message inside of their lives, families and circle of friends. They personally practice the teachings and set up precedents which their followers must emulate. They preach and profess their teachings if no occasion has arisen to exemplify them by their acts. Their quotes shine light when no precedent exists to show  how the teachings apply to a situation. They evangelically spread their message to their locality before it gets known by the whole world. Their audience finally grows from their close relations to big and small nations in the entire world. That is why it is imperative that the real intent in the original text is always transmitted faithfully. That process can best be described as entrustment of the message that God entrusts His Divines. That phenomenon is illustrated by several verses including 002:005; 002:024, 002:042002:091, 002:092, 002:137, 002:186; 002:232; 002:286, 003:054, 003:085, 003:200, 004:061, etc.

** Note 002:005b.  Read our Commentary titled as “2 pronouns or 1 pro and 1 verb mean...” The phrase هُمۡ يُوۡقِنُوۡنَ “hoom-yoo-qay-noon” consists of two words.

  • The first word هُمۡ (= hoom) is a pronoun that refers to ‘all those’ in masculine gender.
  • The second word يُوۡقِنُوۡنَ (=Yoo-qay-noon) is a verb showing the act ‘of bearing an absolute conviction’ done by ‘them all’ (= pl., m., addressee in 3rd person).
  • When a pronoun points to a person, and is followed by a verb which with one of its 14 variations refers to an action by that person, the two-worded phrase so created lays an extreme emphasis on the stated action.   Thus the phrase هُمۡ يُوۡقِنُوۡنَ “hoom-yoo-qay-noon” means ‘They really are the people with a wholesome conviction without any shadow of doubt’.
