** Note 002:262. The following facts must be kept in mind for a better understanding of the concept surrounding the word  اَمۡوَالَ (= Um-waa-la).

  1. This site has translated the word اَمۡوَالَ as assets. It is a noun in the plural form even though it has been mostly translated in the singular such as affluence, cash, jewelry, land, money, property, substance and wealth. The word assets includes also businesses, gains, goods, possessions, riches, resources, time, talent, ostensible means or signs of all above, and other valuables.
  1. Many translators have narrowed the scope of this word to just the cash equivalents like affluences, gains, goods, moneys, possessions, properties, riches, substance and wealth. Translating the verses 002:156 and 002:189 with those limited meanings may be alright.
  1. Much wider meanings appear by seeing مَا ل as a combination of two words. The first word is  مَاۤ  which means all that, whatever or whatsoever.  The second word is  لَ  which means belonging to, for, for the benefit, purpose or reason, or owned by.  The combination of the two words as a single word would mean all and everything that a person has, owns or controls including time. talent, resources, valuables, etc.
  1. The Arabic word مَا ل means lot more than mere tangibles. It includes donors’ time, talent and tasks that produce positives results in far bigger, broader and wider scale, scope and situations that improve the individual and societal lives of others. That is why the word اَمۡوَالَ as used in verses including 002:262, 002:263, 002:266, 002:275, 002:263,  002:266, 002:275, 003:187, 004:003, 004:006, 004:007, 004:011, 004:025, 030:040 is best when translated in its broader sense.

He remarked, ‘How Allah gives (= can or will give) life                                               To this (village) after its death!’

So, Allah caused his death for a hundred years.                                                               Then He resurrected him.

He (Allah) asked him, “How long did you stay (that way)?”                                       He (the man) replied, “I stayed (that way) a day or a part of a day.”                  He (Allah) said, “Nay. You stayed (that way) for a hundred years.

So, look at your food and drink; it’s not spoiled.                                                            And look at your donkey, and so that We make you a sign for the people              And look at the bones how We revive them                                                                 Then We put flesh on them.”

* Note 002:260. The word اَ مَا تَ [a derivative from the root    م    و   ت    ] has been translated in many ways.

Literally it means that Allah caused, commanded, induced, ordained or spelled over the questioner his death or destruction. That led some translators to say that it was the physical death which Allah imposed on him and made him to die or caused him to die.

Rationally it means that Allah brought or induced on him the feeling, thought or physical condition of apparition, dream, idea, mental picture, stupor, trance, vision or visualization of Death.  M Zafarullah Khan described it as Allah ’caused him to sleep and to dream that he had died and risen after a hundred years’ during which he had ‘witnessed developments’)

The translator AR Omar quoted his father Allama Nooruddin that the man was ‘Ezekiel’ and the town ‘Jerusalem’ ‘left in desolation by Nebuchadnezzar.’ And most of the verse has been portrayed as a vision in which “We have made you visualize all this.”

Applying one verse to a prior event is just an illustration of the divine Rule of Universal Application. The rule covers untold number of episodes that have occurred in the past and will keep on recurring — again and again in the future of the mankind. This two-part is as follows.

Part 1 is that even apostles, sages and saints will face times of pain or doubt and wonder if God Almighty would really reverse what all others construe as the normal course of events.

Part 2 is that He shows a crystal clear reversal of the ordinarily expected course of events by means of extraordinary miraculous happenings. One example is restoring life to the dead.

* Note 002:256. This verse is also known as the Aa-ya-tool-kor-see. It is customarily used as a very comprehensive prayer. It starts with the proclamation of the Unity of God, ends by reiterating His Most Exalted status as the Highest, the Greatest, and in-between its nine clauses cover enormous grounds.

Few humans can describe the depth of its meanings or comprehend the breadth of its significance. A lot has been written in its translations, interpretations and extrapolations. But it is an excellent way to reach the Almighty God no matter how a beseecher uses it.

** Note 002:256a.  Several meanings have been attached to the following two sets of words.

The words  اَيۡدِيۡ هِمۡ  are best translated with between their hands or before them as stated above.  However, other translations have expressed them as ‘He knows what appears to His creatures before them or lies ahead or in front of them’ and ‘He knows what His creatures do.’

The words خَلۡفَ هُمۡ are best translated with behind them as stated above.  However, other translations have expressed them as ‘He knows what appears to His creatures behind them’ and ‘He knows what happens or will happen to them in the Hereafter.’

* Note: 002:254. . The two-worded  رُوۡحِ الۡقُدُسِ‌  phrase has been used in the Holy Qor-aan several times. Translations vary as to the exact meanings of this phrase.

Some have referred to it as The Spirit of Holiness. This would be internal quality infused in the subject which in this case is Jesus Son of Mary.

Some have referred to it as Holy Spirit or the Arch angel Gabriel or Jibraeel in the Arabic.  This would be an external force applied or outside person deputed to support the subject which in this case is Jesus Son of Mary.

Either of the two translations appear accurate. They describe a special blessings that the Almighty God conferred on Jesus and specified him in this verse as one of His Messengers.

The Wisdom

The Wisdom

The word  الۡحِكۡمَةَ  has been translated in many different ways.

The literal meanings of word الۡحِكۡمَةَ (Ul-hik-mah) include the following.  Ability to distinguish good from bad, right from wrong. Administered appropriate instruction.  Balancing power.  Comprehension. Intelligence.  Understanding.  Shrewdness.  Many verses including the 002:130, 002:152,  002:232, 002:270 and o62:003 have been translated with those meanings of the word.

But quoting an the Tafsir At-Tabari, the eminent scholars Dr Al-Hilali and Dr Khan have translated this word in the verse 002:252 as the ‘Prophethood’ and stated as follows. “Allah gave him[Dawud (David)] the kingdom[after the death of Talut (Saul) and Samuel] and Al-Hikmah (Prophethood) and taught him of that which He willed.”

The word  الۡحِكۡمَةَ  (Ul-hik-mah) has also been translated as the ‘Knowledge of Islamic laws and jurisprudence.’  Such interpretation is supported by the verse 003:066 because Abraham (a) had prayed that way many centuries before Islam and b) had practically made a forecast about the coming of the Holy Prophet s.a.w and advent of Islam.

Construing Abraham’s aforesaid prayer and forecast to translate this word as ‘Knowledge of Islamic laws and jurisprudence’ is open to the criticism (albeit unjustified in spirit) that what Abraham had sought by his invocation many centuries before Islaam was not and could not be about Islam.

All above extrapolations are plausible in translating this word in verse 002:270.
