The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                        002:170

 

اِنَّمَا يَاۡمُرُكُمۡ بِالسُّوۡٓءِ وَالۡفَحۡشَآءِ وَاَنۡ تَقُوۡلُوۡا عَلَى اللّٰهِ مَا لَا تَعۡلَمُوۡنَ

 

In-na-maa-yau-mo-ro-koom-bis-soo-aiy-wul-fauh-shaa-aiy                                                 Wa-un-ta-qoo-loo-alul-laa-hay-maa-laa-tau-la-moon.

 

He certainly incites you with the doing of evil                                                                 And the lewdness and that you assert about Allah what you do not know.

 

  • اِنَّ — In-na — Certainly (= Absolutely; definitely; doubtlessly; earnestly; indeed; positively; really; seriously; surely; truly; verily)
  • مَا — Maa — All that (= What; whatever; whichever way; any which way)
  • يَاۡمُرُ — Yau-mo-ro — He incites (= v., pres., s., 3rd person. Here the word describes Satan’s actions towards man and can be translated as he bids, enjoins, exhorts, directs, incites, instructs, moves, motivates, prompts, spurs, spurts, tempts or urges deviously, secretly, sneakily and underhandedly.  For translations of this word when used to describe man’s actions towards fellow human beings and God’s actions towards man, see our commentary titled as the ‘Commandments and Prohibitions’)
  • ڪُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person.   You.   The Holy Qor-aan and other scriptures state that way when they address both men and women)
  • بِ — B…(iss) — With (= The Arabic word بِ literally means ‘with’ in English)
  • السُّوۡٓءِ — Soo-aiy — Evil (= n., s., Crime; cruelty; error; harm; illegality, injury; misdeed, mistake; wickedness; wrong.  Of worst kind.  Something bad, foul, horrible, grievous, improper, intentional, indecent, poor, repulsive, severe, terrible, unacceptable, undesirable, unpleasant or vicious consequence, incident, occurrence, result, thing.  Worst possible.  Sometimes used for a single unintended wrong  committed accidentally or forgetfully)
  • وَ — Wa…(ul) — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • الۡفَحۡشَآءِ — Fauh-shaa-aiy — Lewdness (= n., pl., Abominations.  Indecencies.  Illegalities. Inherently bad, evil, foul, immoral, improper, lewd, obscene, repulsive, shameful,  sinful or unseemly acts, conducts, deeds, practices or things. Violations.  Wicked ways. A/t/a niggardliness or tenaciousness)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • اَنۡ — Un — That (= Since; so that; for the purpose)
  • تَقُوۡلُوۡا — Ta-qoo-loo — You assert (= v., pr., s., m, in 2nd person  Falsely allege, announce, call, broadcast, convey, declare, elaborate, expound, preach profess, say, specify, speak, state or tell)
  • عَلٰى — Ala…(ul) — About (= 1. Against; for; on; over; upon. 2. Concerning, regarding or relative to)
  • اللّٰهِ — Laa-hay — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)
  • مَا — Maa — What (=All that; whatever; whatsoever)
  • لَا — Laa — Not (= Absolute denial; never; not at all; total negation)
  • تَعۡلَمُوۡنَ — Tau-la-moon — You know (= v., pr., s., m, in 2nd person are aware. Educated; informed; in the know of; knowingly; knowledgeable)

يٰٓاَيُّهَا النَّاسُ كُلُوۡا مِمَّا فِى الۡاَرۡضِ حَلٰلًا طَيِّبًا  ۖ وَّلَا تَتَّبِعُوۡا خُطُوٰتِ الشَّيۡطٰنِؕ اِنَّهٗ لَـكُمۡ عَدُوٌّ مُّبِيۡنٌ

.

Yaa  auy-yo-haun  naa-so
Ko-loo  mim-maa  fil-ur-dzay  ha-laa-lun  toy-ya-bun
Wa  laa-tut-ta-bay-oo  kho-to-waa-tay  ish-shai-taa-nay
In-na-hoo  la  koom  aa-do-woon  mo-bee-n

.

Listen, People!
You eat out of what is in the earth, lawfully and cleanly.   
And do not follow into the footsteps of Satan.
He certainly is an obvious enemy for you.

 

Verses 002:169002:173 and 006:119 explain what food is permissible

The Holy Qor-aan has used the Phrase Yaa-auy-yo-hun-naa-so … in many places

  • يٰۤ — Yaa — Listen (= Be attentive; pay attention; O!)
  • اَيُّهَا — Auy-yo-ha … (un) — You all (= All, entire, total or whole of the addressees or audience)
  • النَّاسُ — Naa-so — People (= Folks; mankind; nation)
  • كُلُوۡا — Ko-loo — You all eat (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Chomp; consume; devour; feast upon; gobble; gorge; gulp; have; munch; partake; scoff; swallow)
  • مِمَّا — Mim-ma — Out of what (= Combination of two words. The first is  مِنۡ  (min) that means ‘among, from or out of the class, category, kind count or several persons or things.’   The second is   مَاۤ  (maa) that means ‘all that, what, whatever, any time, when whenever.’   So the combination means ‘for what; out of what; concerning, regarding, relative to; thereby)
  • فِىۡ — Fe … (il) — In (= Contained in or amidst a duration, event, time, place, period, thing or situation; inside. See Note 002:028)
  • الۡاَرۡضِ — Ur-dzay — The earth (= Area; country; earth; ground; land; soil; territory)
  • حَلٰلًا — Ha-laa-lun — Lawfully (= adv., In the form of a thing being allowed, approved, legal and permitted)
  • طَيِّبًا — Toy-ya-bun — Cleanly (= adv., In the form of a thing being  طَيِّب  which is singular for the plural  طَيِّبٰتِ  explained in verse 002:058)

  • وَّ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but also; more over; though; when; while; yet)

  • تَتَّبِعُوۡا — Tut-ta-bay-oo  — You follow (= Obey. Act or carry out the given directions or instruction. Fall in rank. Stand behind supporting a Commandment, Prohibition, order or mandate laid down. Yield to)
  • خُطُوٰتِ — Kho-to-waa-tay — Footsteps (= n., pl.,  Manners; marks; shoes; steps; styles; ways)
  • الشَّيۡطٰنِ — Shai-taa-nay — The Satan (= n., s., Bad, false or evil deity, friend or leader; devil; evil spirited person; polytheists; rebellious ringleader. Also, hypocrite; idol-worshipper; Satanic companion; the evil personified. See Note 002:169b)
  • اِنَّ — In-na — Certainly (= Absolutely; clearly; definitely; doubtlessly; earnestly; indeed; positively; really; surely; truly; verily)
  • هٗ — Hoo — He (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to the Satan)
  • لَ — La — For (= For the attention, benefit, purpose or reason of. With intent to. To. With the object of)
  • ڪُمۡ — Koom —  You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person. You all men. Generally, this word refers to and is used for you all men and women)
  • عَدُوّ‏ — Aa-do-woon — An enemy (= Foe who bears animosity, enmity, grudge or hostility. A person who cuts off or severs a connection between two persons who here are the Creator Allah and His creation, the human being)
  • مُّبِيۡنٌ — Mo-bee-n — Obvious (= Avowed; clear; declared; open; sworn; without any  doubt or blemish, hindrance or obstruction that clouds or fogs the view)

* Note 002:169a. The verses 002:169 to 177 bundled together show the Almighty God addressing three groups.

  • Firstly by 002169 He mandates mankind to eat out of what the earth has, lawfully and cleanly. The next three verses underscore other evils that undermine human beings.
  • Secondly by 002:173 He commands eating clean food and by 002:174 He prohibits the believers from eating the dead, the blood, the swine and whatever may be sacrificed for anyone besides Allah.
  • Thirdly by 002:175 to 002:177 He regulates those “who then (as some do now) either believe in too much formalism or believe in no restriction at all. Islam follows the Golden Mean.   All well regulated societies lay down reasonable limitations.   These become incumbent on all loyal members of any given society, and show what is “lawful” in that society” – A Yusuf Ali.

** Note 002:169b. People are cautioned here to be aware and avoid falling into the steps of Satan خُطُوٰتِ الشَّيۡطٰنِ as stated in the verses 002:169, 002:209, 006:143 and 024:022.

002:168

وَقَالَ الَّذِيۡنَ اتَّبَعُوۡا لَوۡ اَنَّ لَنَا كَرَّةً فَنَتَبَرَّاَ مِنۡهُمۡ كَمَا تَبَرَّءُوۡا مِنَّا ؕ كَذٰلِكَ يُرِيۡهِمُ اللّٰهُ اَعۡمَالَهُمۡ حَسَرٰتٍ عَلَيۡهِمۡؕ وَمَا هُمۡ بِخٰرِجِيۡنَ مِنَ النَّارِ

 

Wa-qaa-lul-la-zee-nut-ta-ba-oo
Lao-un-na-la-naa-kur-ra-ton-fa-na-ta-bur-ra-aa-min-hoom
Ka-maa-ta-bur-ra-oo-min-naa
Ka-zaa-lay-ka-yo-ree-hay-mool-laa-ho-au-maa-la-hoom-ha-sa-raa-tin-alai-him
Wa-maa-hoom-bay-kha-ray-jee-na-may-nun-naar.

 

And those who had followed would say
“If we really had another go
Then we would disconnect from them like they have disconnected with us.”
Like this Allah will show them their actions as anguishes to them.
And they won’t be those exiting the Fire.

  • لَوۡ — Lao — If (= If it was possible; if the situation arises; in case; under the circumstances; would it be that)
  • اَنَّ — Un-na — Really (= Absolutely; certainly definitely; doubtlessly; earnestly; indeed; positively; seriously; surely; truly; verily)
  • لَ — La — For (= For the attention, benefit, purpose or reason of. With intent to. With the object of)
  • نَآ — Naa — Us (= pro., pl., 1st person. Us)
  • كَرَّةً — Kur-ra-ton — Another go (= Another chance; one more chance to go back; repeat; return; could we live again)
  • فَ — Fa — Then (= Consequently; as a result; so; then; thus; therefore; yet)
  • نَتَبَرَّاَ — Na-ta-bur-ra-aa — We disconnect (= v., 1st person. Disassociate; disown; renounce; separate; sever connections; stand clear)
  • مِنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of a class, category, count, kind, lot or several persons or things)
  • ھُمۡ‌ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Refers to aforesaid ‘leaders’)
  • کَمَا — Ka-ma — Just like (= Combination of two words.  The first word is كَ  that  means ‘as if it were; like; resembling; similar to’.  The second word is مَا that means ‘all that, what, whatever, whatsoever.’ Together the two as کَمَا mean ‘as if it were; identical; just as; just the way; like it was; resembling in fashion, manner, method or style; similar; even as’)
  • تَبَرَّءُوۡا — Ta-bur-ra-oo — Disconnected (= v. past., 3rd person. The disassociated, disowned, renounced; separated, severed connections or stood clear)
  • مِنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of a class, category, count, kind, lot or several persons or things)
  • نَآ — Naa — Us (= pro., pl., 1st person. Us)
  • كَذٰلِكَ — Ka-zaa-lay-ka — Like this ** (= Combines two words. كَ means ‘example, like, identical resembling, similar.’ ذٰلِكَ means ‘all this right in here and refers to an aforesaid event, fact, person or statement. The combination means ‘even so’, ‘so it will be’, ‘such is the way of Allah’, ‘the same way’, ‘that is how’, this way’)
  • يُرِيۡ — Yo-ree — Show (= Apprise; demonstrate; have it noticed, observed, visualized or watched; make it known)
  • هِمُ — Hay-mo…(ol) — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Refers to aforesaid ‘followers’)
  • اللّٰهُ — Laa-ho — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)
  • اَعۡمَالَ — Au-maa-la — Actions (= End of all their deeds, pursuits, steps, striving or works)
  • هُمۡ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Refers to aforesaid ‘followers’)
  • حَسَرٰتٍ–  Ha-sa-raa-tin — Anguishes (= n., pl., Bundle of regrets.  Intense regrets or remorseful sighs due to unfilled desires, plans, schemes or wishes)
  • عَلَيۡ — Alai — On (= Above; against; before; for; on; on top; over; to; upon)
  • هِمۡ‌ — Him — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Refers to aforesaid ‘followers’)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • مَا — Maa — What (= Absolutely not; no; never)
  • ھُمۡ‌ — Hoom — They (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Refers to aforesaid ‘followers’)
  • بِ — Bay — With (= The Arabic word بِ literally means ‘with’ in English)
  • خٰرِجِيۡنَ — Kha-ray-jee-na — Those exiting (= n., pl., Those who come out, get out or have a way out. Use of words like ‘never, everlasting or perpetual’ with this word contradicts several of the Hadeeth. See Note 002:040)
  • مِنَ — May-n…(un) — From (= From the inside of)
  • ٱلنَّارِ — Naa-r — The Fire (= Rapid sustained chemical reaction releasing heat and light)

 

* Note 002:168a.   The mutual renunciation between leaders and their follower occurs often right in this world.   The reason for the renunciation usually is a wrong one party has done to some of the others.   The intense remorse and regret for the evil done becomes a fire which no one really escapes.   This extrapolation is done by several people including M Muhammad Ali.
** Note 002:168b.   This part of the verse describes the Rule of Universal Application that ‘Everyone reaps what he sows.’   It is beautifully verbalized by A Yusuf Ali as follows in his Note C-50

“The Society thus organised
Must live under laws
That would guide their every-day life
Based on eternal principles
Of righteousness and fair dealing.”

اِذۡ تَبَرَّاَ الَّذِيۡنَ اتُّبِعُوۡا مِنَ الَّذِيۡنَ اتَّبَعُوۡا وَرَاَوُا الۡعَذَابَ وَ تَقَطَّعَتۡ بِهِمُ الۡاَسۡبَابُ

   

Iz-ta-bur-ra-ul-la-zee-nut-to-bay-oo                                                                                                May-nul-la-zee-nut-ta-ba-oo                                                                                                              Wa-ra-aa-wool-azaa-ba                                                                                                                    Wa-ta-qut-ta-ut-bay-hay-mool-us-baa-b

 

When those who were followed severed ties                                                                      From those who had followed                                                                                              And they saw the punishment                                                                                                  And all relations with them cut.

The leaders who gave orders, laid down law, assigned tasks, dictated directions, issued instructions, made mandates, enforced commands and proclaimed prohibitions that others acted upon, carried out, copied, obeyed and supported by falling in rank behind and yielding to them)
  • مِنَ — May-n…(ul) — From (= Among, from or out of a class, category, count, kind, lot or several persons or things)
  • ٱلَّذِينَ – Ul-la-zee-n(ut) — Those who (= pl., m, 3rd person. All those articles, things or persons)

وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَنۡ يَّتَّخِذُ مِنۡ دُوۡنِ اللّٰهِ اَنۡدَادًا يُّحِبُّوۡنَهُمۡ كَحُبِّ اللّٰهِؕ وَالَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡٓا اَشَدُّ حُبًّا لِّلّٰهِ ؕ وَلَوۡ يَرَى الَّذِيۡنَ ظَلَمُوۡٓا اِذۡ يَرَوۡنَ الۡعَذَابَۙ اَنَّ الۡقُوَّةَ لِلّٰهِ جَمِيۡعًا ۙ وَّاَنَّ اللّٰهَ شَدِيۡدُ الۡعَذَابِ‏

 

Wa-me-nun-naa-say-mun-yut-ta-khay-zo-min-doo-nil-laa-hay-un-da-dun
Yo-hib-boo-na-hoom-ka-hoob-bil-laa-hay
Wul-la-zee-na-aa-ma-noo-aa-shud-do-hoob-bun-lil-laa-hay
Wa-lao-ya-rul-la-zee-na-za-la-moo
Iz-ya-rao-nul-azaa-ba
Un-nul-qoow-wa-ta-lil-laa-hay-ja-me-aa
Wa-un-nul-laa-ha-sha-dee-dool-azaab.

 

And among the people are those who take objects besides Allah as gods
They love them like the love is meant for Allah
And those who have believed strongly love Allah.
And if those who wronged could visualize
When they will see the punishment
That certainly all power belongs to Allah.
And certainly Allah is very strict in punishment.

  • دُوۡنِ — Doo-n…(il) — Besides (= Apart from; except; excluding; exclusive of; other than; in preference to; over and beyond; to the exclusion)
  • اللّٰهِ — Laa-hay — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)
  • اَنۡدَادًا — Un-daa-dun — Objects (= Associates; compeers; equivalents; idols; other gods; partners; rivals)
  • يُّحِبُّوۡنَ — Yo-hib-boo-na — They love (= v., pres., 3rd person., Adore; appreciate; aspire; cherish; covet; crave; deeply desire; enamored with; feel very much attached; find irresistibly captivating, lucrative or luring; fond of; having fun with; like; seeking the attention of; want; wish for)
  • هُمۡ‌ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3 rd person. Refers to aforesaid ‘people’)
  • كَ — Ka — Like is meant (= Like it is due, intended, meant and should be for only Allah. Ordinary meanings of word كَ are example, identical, resembling, similar or similitude)
  • حُبِّ — Hoob-b…(il — Love (= n., Adoration; appreciation; attachment; craving; devotion; emotions; passion. A/t/a amorous desire or lure which normally is used only in the context of male-female relations)
  • اللّٰهِ — Alla-hay — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)
  • وَ — Wa…(ul) — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • ٱلَّذِينَ — Ul-la-zee-na — Those who (= pl., m., 3rd person. All those articles, things or persons)
  • اٰمَنُوۡٓا — Aa-ma-noo — They believed (= v., pl., They had sincerely, totally and wholeheartedly believed in the Holy Qor-aan and accepted Islam. 2.   • حُبًّا — Hoob-bun — Love (= n., Adoration; appreciation; attachment; craving; devotion; emotions; passion. A/t/a amorous desire or lure which normally is used only in the context of male-female relations)
  • لِلۡ — L…(il) — For (= Decreed, destined, meant and reserved for the attention, benefit, purpose or reason of. Concerning. Regarding. Relative to. With intent to, object of or regard to)

  • ظَلَمُوۡا — Zaa-la-moo — Wronged (= v., past., pl., 3rd person., Acted badly. Behaved wickedly. Caused evil. Committed crimes or cruelty. Did injustice. Harmed. Maltreated. Shortened. Transgressed. Treated  improperly or unjustly. Violated rights of others)

اِنَّ فِىۡ خَلۡقِ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالۡاَرۡضِ وَاخۡتِلَافِ الَّيۡلِ وَالنَّهَارِ وَالۡفُلۡكِ الَّتِىۡ تَجۡرِىۡ فِى الۡبَحۡرِ بِمَا يَنۡفَعُ النَّاسَ وَمَآ اَنۡزَلَ اللّٰهُ مِنَ السَّمَآءِ مِنۡ مَّآءٍ فَاَحۡيَا بِهِ الۡاَرۡضَ بَعۡدَ مَوۡتِهَا وَبَثَّ فِيۡهَا مِنۡ کُلِّ دَآ بَّةٍ وَّتَصۡرِيۡفِ الرِّيٰحِ وَالسَّحَابِ الۡمُسَخَّرِ بَيۡنَ السَّمَآءِ وَالۡاَرۡضِ لَاٰيٰتٍ لِّقَوۡمٍ يَّعۡقِلُوۡنَ‏

 

In-na-fee-khul-qis-sa-maa-waa-tay-wul-ur-dzay
Wukh-tay-laa-fil-lai-lay-wun-na-haa-ray
Wul-fool-kil-la-tee-tuj-ree-fil-bauh-ray-bay-maa-yun-fa-oon-naa-sa
Wa-maa-un-za-lul-laa-ho-may-nus-sa-maa-aiy-mim-maa-in
Fa-auh-yaa-bay-hil-urdza-bau-da-mao-tay-haa
Wa-buth-tha-fee-haa-min-kool-lay-daab-ba-tin
Wa-tus-ree-fir-re-yaa-hay
Wus-sa-haa-bil-mo-sukh-kha-ray-bai-nus-sa-maa-aiy-wul-ur-dzay
La-aa-yaa-tin-lay-qao-min-yau-qay-loo-n.

 

Certainly in the creation of the heavens and the earth
And the sequentially appearing (= alternation) of the night and the day
And the ships sailing in the ocean carrying cargoes with that people benefit
And what Allah downed from the rainwater out of the sky
Then with it He gave life to the earth after its death
And spread in it all kinds of live creatures
And the movement of the winds and the clouds
Harnessed between the sky and the earth
Certainly there are signs for people who act wisely.

وَاِلٰهُكُمۡ اِلٰهٌ وَّاحِدٌ  ۚ لَآ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا هُوَ الرَّحۡمٰنُ الرَّحِيۡمُ‏

 

Wa-elaa-ho-koom-elaa-hoon-waa-hid                                                                                          Laa-elaa-ha-il-laa-ho-wur-rah-maa-noor-ra-hee-m.

 

And your God is the One God.                                                                                               There is no God except Him, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

  • هُوَ — Ho-w…(ur) — Him (= Pronoun for single third person in male gender)
  • الرَّحۡمٰنُ — Rah-maa-no.(or) — The Most Beneficent (= The One who fully, totally and wholly benefits all, to the maximum, with no condition, limitation or restriction.   Compassionate.   Gracious)
  • الرَّحِيۡمُ — Ra-hee-m — The Most Merciful (= The One who fully, totally and wholly showers mercy, to the maximum, again and again, continually, indefinitely and perpetually like the incoming waves from the oceans)

Note 002:164. This verse includes the following phrases.   Each phrase is repeated elsewhere in the Holy Qor-aan.  See our Commentary for how Repetitions in the Holy Qor-aan have benefits.

  • The first اِلٰهٌ وَّاحِدٌ means One and Only One God.
  • The second لَآ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا هُوَ means No God Except Him. These words are part of the phrase commonly known as the Kalimah. This phrase is the first basic belief which must be believed, uttered, practiced and professed by a person who enters Islaam to become a Moslem. The Holy Qor-aan has repeated them frequently such as among others the verses 002:256. 003:003, 003:019 (twice), 004:087, 027:027, 059:023, 059:024, etc.
  • The third الرَّحۡمٰنُ الرَّحِيۡمُ‏    means The Most Beneficent The Most Merciful.

The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                         002:163

 

خٰلِدِيۡنَ فِيۡهَا ۚ لَا يُخَفَّفُ عَنۡهُمُ الۡعَذَابُ وَلَا هُمۡ يُنۡظَرُوۡنَ

  

Khaa-lay-dee-na  fee  haa                                                                                                                      Laa  yo-khuf-fa-fo  un  ho-mo  ol-aa-zaa-bo                                                                                      Wa  laa  hoom  yoon-za-roo-n

They will live in it.                                                                                                          Punishment will not be reduced for them.                                                                          And they will not get reprieved.

In-nul-la-zee-na-ka-fa-roo                                                                                                             Wa-maa-too-wa-hoom-koof-faa-roon                                                                                             Olaa-aiy-ka-alai-him-lau-na-tool-laa-hay                                                                               Wul-ma-laa-aiy-ka-tay-wun-naa-say-uj-ma-een.

 

Surely those who disbelieved                                                                                               And died and still were disbelievers                                                                             Upon them is the curse of Allah                                                                                          And the angels and the people altogether.

اِلَّا الَّذِيۡنَ تَابُوۡا وَاَصۡلَحُوۡا وَبَيَّـنُوۡا فَاُولٰٓٮِٕكَ اَ تُوۡبُ عَلَيۡهِمۡۚ وَاَنَا التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِيۡمُ

              

Il-lul-la-zee-na-taa-boo-wus-la-hoo-wa-buy-ya-noo                                                                   Fa-olaa-aiy-ka-atoo-bo-alai-him                                                                                                     Wa-anut-tuw-waa-boor-ra-heem.

 

Except those who repented and reformed and made things clear.                    Then it is these that I turn to forgive them.                                                                        And I am the Utmost Forgiving, the Utmost Merciful.

  • هِمۡ — Him — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Refers to aforesaid persons)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • اَنَا — Ana…(ut) — I (= pro., pl., 1st person. Us. Refers to the Almighty God)
  • التَّوَّابُ — Tuw-waab .. (or) — Utmost Forgiving (= superlative form indicates the greatest, the highest, and highlights that none more than Him is ready to turn in compassion and mercy to accept the regret, remorse and repentance of man. Forgives man who admits faults, guilt or sins. A/t/a, Forgiving; Oft-Returning; Returning in utmost compassion; Relenting. See Note 002:038)
  • الرَّحِيۡمُ — Ra-heem — Utmost Merciful (= superlative form indicates the greatest, the highest, the most, and highlights that none more than Him shows mercy again and again, continually, incessantly and indefinitely like the endlessly and perpetually incoming waves from the oceans; Merciful Forever. See 001:001)

 

** 002:161: One’s resolve to be repentant essentially requires that it be followed by his actual action of amending his prior practices. That is why the word  تَابُوۡا  (taa-boo) meaning they repented has been followed by the word  اَصۡلَحُوۡا  (us-la-hoo) meaning they made amends; see Note 002:038.

This combination of a resolve followed by a congruent action has been repeated in the Holy Qor-aan several times such as 002:161, 005:040,
