002:253

The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                            002:253

تِلۡكَ اٰيٰتُ اللّٰهِ نَـتۡلُوۡهَا عَلَيۡكَ بِالۡحَـقِّ‌ وَاِنَّكَ لَمِنَ الۡمُرۡسَلِيۡنَ○‏‏

Til-ka-aa-yaa-tool-laa-hay                                                                                                               Nut-loo-ha-alai-ka-bil-huq-qay                                                                                                      Wa-in-na-ka-may-nul-moor-sa-lee-n.

These are the revelations of Allah.                                                                                       We narrate them to you with good reason.                                                                    And definitely you are one of the Messengers

  • تِلۡكَ  — Til-ka — These (= Those ‘shown, specified or stated right here’)
  • اٰيٰتُ — Aa-yaa-to — Signs (= pl of., 1. Manifestation; message; narrative; revelation;  verse.  2.  Command; direction; evidence; law; order.   3.   Corroboration; indication; lesson; portent; proof; pointer; symbol; token.   4. Every element to create the crystal clear picture leading to an absolute conviction. 5. Argument, part or portion that highlights or points to something)
  • اللّٰهِ — Alla-hay — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)
  • نَـتۡلُوۡ — Nut-loo — We narrate (= Recite; rehearse; relate; reveal; state; specify)
  • هَا — Haa — All these (= pro., s., f., 3rd person. Refers to aforesaid ‘signs’)
  • عَلَيۡ — Alai — To (= Above; on; upon)
  • كَ — Ka — You (= pro., s., m., 2nd person.  You single male.  The addressee of this divine message is initially the Holy Prophet s.a.w)

  • اِنّ — In-na — Surely (= Certainly; definitely; indeed; positively; verily)
  • كَ  — Ka  — You    *    (= pro., s., m., 2nd person.  You single male.  The addressee of this divine message is initially the Holy Prophet s.a.w)
  • لَ — La — Definitely          (= 1. Absolutely; doubtlessly; positively; surely; verily.  2. Entirely; totally; utterly; wholesomely)
  • مِنَ — May-n…(ul) — One of the (= From a large number or a huge lot)
  • الۡمُرۡسَلِيۡنَ — Mor-sa-lee-n — Messengers (= Prophets. Carriers. Those entrusted with something to deliver safely, securely and surely to the intended recipient)

* Note 002:253.  The last five words of this verse [اِنَّكَ لَمِنَ الۡمُرۡسَلِيۡنَ] have been repeated in the Holy Qor-aan in verses 002:253 and 036:004.    The general consensus is that the addressee of these words is only the Holy Prophet Mohammed s.a.w.

The Almighty Allah has named the Holy Prophet Mohammed s.a.w at four places the Holy Qor-aan.

  • Mohammed a.w is only a messenger (003-145).
  • Mohammed a.w is not a father of any of men (033:041).
  • Moslems believe in what has been revealed on Mohammed a.w (047:003).
  • Mohammed a.w the messenger of Allah (048:030)

Allah knows all and knows the best.    He could have easily named Mohammed s.a.w at all places where the Holy Qor-aan has used the pronoun كَ  for ‘you single male’ if the intention was to refer to him only and no other.

That is perhaps why the translations that have narrowed down the said pronoun  كَ  for ‘you single male’ to only Mohammed s.a.w led them to construe three to several hundred of the verses as munsookh and treat them as abrogated, invalid, obsolete, over-written or non-practical.

The Munir Commission of the West Pakistan High Court ruled that Ahmadi sect is the only one group that believes that every word, clause and verse of the Holy Qor-aan is as valid, operative and practical today as it was the day when it was revealed to the Holy Prophet s.a.w fourteen centuries ago.

Dr Al-Hilali and Dr Khan in the Notes under this verse have mentioned many a hearsay reports of the quotes of the Holy Prophet s.a.w called Hadeeth about the Caliphate system.    Some stated that he s.a.w was the Last Prophet.    Some claimed that the Prophethood had ended in Islam and was replaced by the advent of Khaleefahs as the succession to God’s messengers in future.    Some established superiority of one caliph to whom the allegiance [Baiy-yah] was made first over the caliph to whom the allegiance was solemnized subsequently.    A belief in any such reports and claims depends upon what sect one belongs to.   A columnist in a New York Moslem publication in the first decade of twenty-first century AD named the conduct of one Khleefah as Oos-we-ha-sa-na although the Holy Qor-aan has eternalized that distinction and honor for only Abraham and his followers [060:005] and the Holy Prophet s.a.w [033:022] and any attempt to pin that unique honor on anyone else is not proper.

Thus they routed them by Allah’s grace.                                                                           And David downed Jaloot.                                                                                                  And Allah gave him the Kinghood and the Wisdom                                                  And taught him out of all that He pleased.                                                                          And if there was no repelling of some people                                                                  With some others, the whole world would be in a chaos.                                          But Allah is the Lord of Grace to the whole world.

* Note 002:252.  Most translations have stated this section as “Had Allah not repelled” and construed the operative word as a verb in the past tense.  If that was the case, the word used would have been عَ فَ   دَ (da-fa-aa) and translated as beaten, checked, contained, controlled, defeated, discarded, ended, pushed back, prevented, rejected, repelled, reversed, reverted, stopped, thwarted or turned back.

But that is not the case.  The original text has used the word of دَفۡعُ  (duf-o) which is a noun.  Thus its accurate translation is ‘beat, check, containment, control, defeat, discarding, end, push back, prevention, rejection, repelling, reversal, reversion, stoppage, thwarting or turning back.’  And this true translation is set above.

The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                                  002:247

Have you not looked at the leaders of  the children of Israel                                      After Moses when they said to a prophet of theirs,                                                      “Appoint a king for us so so we may fight in the cause of Allah.”

He said, “Could it be — if mandated
Upon you was the fighting — that you do not fight?”

They said, “And what could be for us that we do not fight                                            In the cause of Allah and surely we were driven away                                                 From our homes and our children.”

Then when the fighting was mandated upon them,
They turned away except a tiny number of them.
And Allah knows well the wrongdoers.

Note 002:244a. This phrase is a question. The addresses are all its readers.

The segment  اَلَمۡ (= aa-laum = not) is a combination of two words. The first word أ (= aa) is a question mark. The second word لَمۡ  (= laum) means no, not, not at all, never. Jointly the combination means can’t, don’t, hasn’t, haven’t, shan’t or won’t as in verses

The segment تَرَ (= ta-ra = you looked at) is a combination of two words. The first word  تَ  (= ta) means ‘you’ which some authors mimicking the Western authors of their scriptures have translated as thou or thy. The second word رَ  (ra = v., past., s., 2nd person) means eyed, found, looked, observed, pondered, saw, seen, viewed, watched or witnessed. Translations like considered, evaluated, knew, noticed or realized are justified in some contexts. The past tense verb for single 3rd person is converted into that of plural 2nd person as explained in Note 001:007. Jointly the combination means you looked.

Various authors have translated the phrase اَلَمۡ تَرَ اِلَى differently from each other. Some of them have differed from their own translations of other verses.

See verses 002:244, 002:247, 002:259, 003:024, 004:045, 004:050, 004:052, 004:061,  004:078, 005:063 and 105:002 among others.

** Note 002:244b.  M Pickthall limited this rule to only the event of Exodus in the history of Jews.  Likewise AM Omar quoted his father, “Allah said to them ‘Die’ (with the result that this generation perished while wandering in the wilderness for forty years.)  Then (from the next generation) He revived them.”

However, as a Rule of Universal Application this verse has a much broader scope of its application.  It indeed is an accurate record of an historical event.  It also is a forecast as the guidance relative to the similar events that will happen in the future of mankind.  It is one of the grounds that permits immigration.  It labeled as the Fear of Death is judicially held to be a good ground for the grant of Asylum and Refugee Status in the laws of all civilized jurisdictions and the charter of the United Nations.
