002:013

The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                       002:013

اَلَا ۤ اِنَّهُمۡ هُمُ الۡمُفۡسِدُوۡنَ وَلٰـكِنۡ لَّا يَشۡعُرُوۡنَ○‏

Aa-laa  in-na  hoom  ho-mo  ol-moof-say-do-na  wa  laa-kin laa  yaush-aa-roon

Isn’t it really that they are the mischievous but they don’t realize?

  • اَلا — Aa-laa — Isn’t it (= This word combines two words. The first  اَ  (aa) is used to ask a question as with are, can, could, do, did, have, had, is, shell, should, was, will, would, what, etc. The second  لَا  (laa) is a word of denial that means no, not, none, neither, never, naught, etc. Together as one word it means is it not or isn’t it, was it not or wasn’t it)
  • اِنَّ — In-na — Really (= Absolutely; definitely; doubtlessly; indeed; positively; really; surely; truly; verily. More details at 002:128}
  • هُمۡ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m.,  3rd person. See Note 002:013 below)
  • هُمُ — Ho-mo … (ol) — Them (= Same as  هُمۡ  above. Refers to aforesaid miscreants)
  • الۡمُفۡسِدُوۡنَ — Moof-say-doon — Mischievous (= n., pl., Corrupt. Corruption creators. Disrupters. Evil-doers. Law-breakers. Mischief mongers. Mischievous. Miscreants. Those who spread the bad and the evil)

** Note 002:013.  Read Commentary titled “2 pronouns or 1 pro and 1 verb mean…”  The phrase اِنَّهُمۡ هُمُ الۡمُفۡسِدُوۡنَ  (in-na  hoom  ho-mo  ol-moof-say-do-na) consists of three words.

  • The first word اِنَّ (= in-na) means “certainly; definitely; doubtlessly; indeed; positively; really; surely; truly, verily.”
  • The second word هُمۡ (= hoom) is a pronoun (= pl., m., addressees in 3rd person) referring to all those people.
  • The third word  هُمۡ  (= ho-mo) is also a pronoun (= pl., m., addressees in 3rd person) referring to all those people.
  • A phrase duplicating two pronouns like  هُمُ  after another  هُمۡ  lays a tremendous emphasis on the person highlighted. Thus  اِنَّهُمۡ هُمُ الۡمُفۡسِدُوۡنَ  (in-na  hoom  ho-mo  ol-moof-say-do-na) means ‘Surely these very people are’ – as described – ‘the evil-doers, corrupt; corruption creators; disruption developers; law-breakers; mischief mongers; spreaders of bad and evil.’
  • Examples of this kind including this verse are found in 002:005,  002:013002:014, 002:023,  002:033,  002:034,  002:038002:043002:045 and many other places in the Holy Qor-aan.
