فَاَرۡسَلۡنَا عَلَيۡهِمُ الطُّوۡفَانَ وَالۡجَـرَادَ وَالۡقُمَّلَ وَالضَّفَادِعَ وَالدَّمَ اٰيٰتٍ مُّفَصَّلٰتٍ فَاسۡتَكۡبَرُوۡا وَكَانُوۡا قَوۡمًا مُّجۡرِمِيۡنَ‏

 

Fa  aur-saul-naa  alai-hay-mo  ot-too-faa-na
Wa  ul-ja-raa-da  wa  ul-qoom-ma-la
Wa  udz-dza-faa-day-aa  wa  ud-da-ma
Aa-yaa-tin-m  mo-faus-sa-laa-tin  fa  us-tauk-ba-roo
Wa  kaa-noo  qao-maun-m   mooj-ray-mee-n

 

Then We sent upon them the storm
And the locusts and the lice
And the frogs and the blood
As manifest signs. Then they boasted.
And they had been criminal people.   

                       

  • فَ — Fa — Then (= After all this; as a result; at the end; but; consequently;     hence; in conclusion; so; then; thereafter; therefore; thus; yet. See 002:027)
  • اَرۡسَلۡنَاAur-saul  — We sent (= v., past., pl., 1st person. Appointed; dispatched; deputed   empowered with the authority; raised; set up. The past tense verb for single 3rd person is now for the plural 1st person as explained in Note 001:007. A/t/a, ‘We  afflicted,’ let loose’ and ‘We plagued’)
  • عَلَيۡ — Alai — On (= Above; against; before; during; for; on; on top of; over; you; upon)
  • هِمُ –Hay-mo … (ot) Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. They. Refers to the  Israelites)
  • الطُّوۡفَانَ –Too-faa-na — The storm (= n, s. Flood. Storm. Typhon. Also aerial disturbance  like whirlwind. A/t/a, ‘storms,’ ‘wholesale death,’ ‘wide-spread death,’ ‘widespread death and destruction (caused by storms, epidemics,’ ‘flood,’ ‘floods’  and ‘the flood’)
  • وَ — Wa … (ul) — And (= Conj., Links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; moreover; though; when; whereupon; while; yet)
  • الۡجَـرَادَ — Ja-raa-da — The locusts (= n., The deserts west of Egypt are highly conducive to breed, grow and multiply locusts which usually move eastward and eat up all greenery on the way, destroy and leave behind dusty fields empty of food. A/t/a, ‘locusts’ and ‘the locusts’)
  • وَ — Wa … (ul) — And (= Conj., Links words, phrases or clauses. See  وَ   above)
  • الۡقُمَّلَ — Qoom-ma-la ‘lice’ The lice (= n., The insect that grows in the filthy human hair. A/t/a, ‘the lice,’ ‘lice’ and ‘vermin’)
  • وَ — Wa … (udz) — And (= Conj., Links words, phrases or clauses. See  وَ  above)
  • الضَّفَادِعَ — Dza-faa-day-aa — The frogs (= n., pl., The epidemic of huge quantities of noisy frogs)
  • وَ — Wa … (ud) — And (= Conj., Links words, phrases or clauses. See  وَ   above)
  • الدَّمَ — Da-ma — The blood (= n., Blood. A/t/a, ‘the blood,’ ‘blood’ and ‘blood (- wars)’
  • اٰيٰتٍ — Aa-yaa-tin — Signs (= n., pl., Portents. Tokens. See Note 002:074. A/t/a, ‘Signs’ and ‘miracles’)
  • مُّفَصَّلٰتٍ — Mo-faus-say-laa-tin — Manifest (= adj., Highly and well explained and explanatory. A/t/a, ‘openly self-explained,’ ‘distinct,’ ‘clear,’ ‘(all) distinct and well-defined,’ ‘a succession of clear’ and ‘(as a succession of) manifest’) 
  • فَ — Fa … (us) — Then (= Consequently; so; thus; therefore. See فَ above. A/t/a, ‘but’ and ‘yet’)
  • اسۡتَكۡبَرُوۡا — Aus-tauk-ba-roo — They boasted (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Acted arrogantly.. Behaved boastfully. Bragged haughtily. Deemed himself too big and proud. Prided. Puffed with pride.  Scorned.  Smug or smitten with complex. Took pride. Were egotist, pride-stricken and vanity rich. A/t/a, ‘they were steeped in arrogance,’ ‘they behaved haughtily,’ ‘they behaved proudly,’ ‘they remained haughty,’ ‘they continued to behave arrogantly,’ ‘they were arrogant,’ ‘they remained’ and ‘they scorned’)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., Links words, phrases or clauses. See  وَ   above. A/t/a, ‘But’ and ‘for’)
  • كَانُوۡۤا — Kaa-noo — Had been (= v., past., pl., m., 3rd person. Continued doing; used to; went on; were doing. Words has or had always been indicate endless continuity from the past to the present and leading into the future. See 002:011. A/t/a, ‘they became’ and they ‘were’)
  • قَوۡمًا — Qao-maun — People (= n., s., Addressees; attendees; fellows; followers; folks;     nation; party; people; tribe A/t/a, ‘a people’ and ‘those people’)
  • مُّجۡرِمِيۡنَ — Mooj-ray-mee-n — Criminals (= n., pl., Those who have committed crimes. A/t/a, ‘sinful people,’ ‘given to sin,’ ‘guilty people,’ ‘who had cut off their ties (with God),’ ‘wicked’ and ‘who were Mujrimin (criminals, polytheists and sinners)’
