The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                               007:131

 

وَلَقَدۡ اَخَذۡنَاۤ اٰلَ فِرۡعَوۡنَ بِالسِّنِيۡنَ وَنَقۡصٍ مِّنَ الثَّمَرٰتِ لَعَلَّهُمۡ يَذَّكَّرُوۡنَ

 

Wa  la-qaud  aa-khau-zaa  aa-lay  phir-auo-na
Bay(s)  say-ne-na  wa  nauq-say(m)  may-nau(th)
Tha-ma-raa-tay  la-aul-laa  hoom  yauz-zauk-ka-roo-n 

 

And We certainly caught the followers of Pharoah
With the years of scarcity and shortage of the
Fruits so they may remember God Almighty.

       

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., Links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; also; but; moreover; though; when; whereupon; while; yet)
  • لَـقَدۡ — La-qaud — Certainly (= Two words  لَ  (La) and قَدۡ  (Qaud) both mean absolutely; certainly, definitely, indeed; obviously, positively, surely; truly, verily. See Commentary 2 Words of Emphasis used together Multiply Effect. A/t/a, ‘certainly,’ ‘indeed’ and ‘surely’)
  • اَخَذۡنَا — Aa-khauz-naa — We caught (= v., past., pl., 1st person. Caught. Drew. Got hold of. Grabbed. Held. Inflicted. Obtained. Received. Secured. Seized. Struck. Took. The past tense verb for single 3rd person is replaced by that for the plural 1st person as explained in the Note 001:007. A/t/a, ‘We afflicted,’ ‘We punished,’ ‘We overtook,’  ‘We seized’ and ‘We straitened’)
  • اٰلَ — Aa-la — Followers (= Folks; men; nation; people. Also, children; courtiers; off-springs; followers; progeny. A/t/a, ‘‘folk’)
  • فِرۡعَوۡنَ — Phir-auo-no — Pharaoh (= n., Dictatorial monarchs of Egypt who were known to  be extremely arrogant, highly boastful, pride-stricken, vanity rich and with big ego)
  • بِ — Bay … (iss) — With (= The best translation of the word بِ is with. See 001:001)
  • السِّنِيۡنَ — Say-ne-na — Years (= n., pl., Years of drought. Years of reversals in economic and social growth. Reference here is to the number of years of drought and food shortage that was inflicted upon Pharoah’s kingdom. See 002:156. A/t/a, ‘years of’   scarcity,’ ‘years (of Drought),’ ‘years of drought,’ ‘droughts,’ ‘hard times,’ ‘famine’  and ‘dearth’)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., Links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • نَقۡصٍ — Nauq-sin … (m) — Shortage (= adj., Diminishing. Loss. Reduction. State of losing  what one owns. A/t/a, ‘shortness,’ ‘diminution,’ ‘poor,’ ‘scarcity,’ ‘dearth’ and ‘famine’)
  • مِّنَ — May-na …(uth) — From (= Among, from or out of a class, category, count, kind,       lot or several persons or things. A/t/a, ‘of’)
  • الثَّمَرٰتِ — Tha-ma-raa-tay — The fruits (= n., pl., Fruits; crops harvested; edibles produced by or from the plants and trees; yield. The word also means fruits or gains from the (a) use of abilities, blessings, capabilities; capacities, faculties, qualities or talents, (b) usufruct from acquired assets, education, facilities, opportunities or qualifications and (c) results of the efforts made, labors performed, services rendered or toil done. A/t/a, ‘harvests,’ ‘fruits,’ crops’ and ‘fruits (crops)’ )
  • لَعَلَّ — La-ul-la — May (= Haply; hopefully; perchance; perhaps; possibly; hope and wish that the result will be; maybe. At/a, ‘that … might’ and ‘peradventure … might’)
  • ھُمۡ‌ — Hoom — They (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Refers to the ‘people’)
  • يَذَّكَّرُوۡنَ  — Yauz-zauk-ka-roo-na — Remember (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. They attend, bear in mind, celebrate, extol, heed, pay attention; ponder, recall, reflect or think. See Note 002:153. A/t/a, ‘receive admonition,’ ‘be admonished,’ ‘be mindful,’ ‘take heed,’ ‘heed’ and ‘remember (take heed)’
