*  Note 002:134.   The verses 002:134 and 002:137 illustrate how the same words used in different set-ups convey different shades of meanings and why the reference to the context is so important in knowing true meanings of a writing.   The words نَحۡنُ لَهٗ convey the meaning that “we are and forever remain” but are controlled by the word that follows them.   Both these verses end with the word مُسۡلِمُوۡنَ  which means obedient and submissive.  Both verses end with the same five words.  However, the changed underlying scenario gives different shades to the meanings.

In verse 002:134 the said five words are an assurance by Jacob’s sons following their father’s advice and wish to remain submissive to God. That was several centuries before Islam when they could not be Moslems as adherents of a religion that had not yet come.   In verse 002:137 those five words are an expression of obedience by the Moslems to the Almighty God who had commanded them after the advent of Islam and as the readers of the Holy Qor-aan.  So the words used for two different people in two different eras must be translated differently.

Iz-qaa-la-la-hoo-rub-bo-hoo–us-lim -qaa-la-us-lum-to-lay-rub-bil-aa-la-mee-n.

When his God said to him, ‘Submit,’ he said, ‘I submit to Lord Provident of the Universe.’

.

  • اِذۡ — Iz — When (= Call to mind, consider; recall; ponder over; remember)
  • قَا لَ — Qaa-la — He said (= v., past t, s., male, 3rd person. Announced; broadcast; commanded; conveyed; declared; directed; instructed; mandated; ordered; specified; stated; told)

  • هٗ — Hoo — Him (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Ref is to ‘Abraham’)
  • رَبُّ — Rub-bo — God (= The Almighty Allah who fills needs of all creatures;
    Creator; Guardian; Master; Lord Provident. The Only One Who provides all that sustains life. Ultimate Provider of air, water, food and whatever we and all other creatures need to live and subsist)
  • هٗۤ  — Hoo — Him only (= pro., s., m., 3rd person.  Ref is to ‘Abraham’ twice with the same pronoun for laser-sharp pin-pointed emphasis)
  • اَسۡلِم — Us-lim — Submit * (= Carry out; do as told; obey; be docile and subservient)

  • لِ — Lay — For (= For the attention, benefit, object, purpose or reason of)
  • رَبِّ — Rub-b…(il) — Lord Provident (= The Almighty Allah who fills needs of all creatures; Creator; Guardian; Master; Lord Provident. The Only One Who provides all that sustains life. Ultimate Provider of air, water, food and whatever we and all other creatures need to live and subsist)

* Note 002:132. Some translations have added the words (a) ‘now’ at the beginning of this verse and (b) ‘already’ before Abraham’s surrender to God.   Such translations reflect as if Abraham’s ‘immediate’ compliance was preceded by a prior non-compliance, and that the Almighty God did not know before that Abraham had already submitted.   Both the insinuations to say the least are preposterous.   Abraham’s obedience was instantaneous and compliance glorious.   Neither of those two superfluous words really accentuate his conduct.   That is why they or their equivalent are not added in the above simple and straightforward translation.
