The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                  002:056

 

وَاِذۡ قُلۡتُمۡ يٰمُوۡسٰى لَنۡ نُّؤۡمِنَ لَـكَ حَتّٰى نَرَى اللّٰهَ جَهۡرَةً فَاَخَذَتۡكُمُ الصّٰعِقَةُ وَاَنۡتُمۡ تَنۡظُرُوۡنَ‏

  

Wa-iz-qool-toom-yaa-moo-saa-lun-noe-may-na-la-ka                                                                Hut-ta-na-rul-laa-ha-juh-ra-ton                                                                                                          Fa-aa-kha-zut-ko-moos-saa-aiy-qa-to-wa-un-toom-tun-zo-roo-n.

               

And recall when you said, “Listen Moses! we won’t believe you                                Until we see Allah face to face.”                                                                                              So a  lightening struck you and you surely were seeing it.

  • نُّؤۡمِنَ — Noe-may-na — We believe (= v., pres., pl., 1st person  Have faith; rely on what you assert as true; trust)
  • لَ — La — For ( = For the benefit, purpose or reason; on account of)
  • كَ — Ka — You (= pro., s., m., in 2nd person; Addressee is Moses)
  • حَتّٰى — Hut-ta — Until (= By the end of the period or term; till the time; unless)

  • ٱللَّهَ — Laa-ha — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)

  • الصّٰعِقَةُ — Saa-aiy-qa-to– Lightning (= s., Flash of lightning followed by loud lingering sounds of thunder. Noisy, screaming, shouting, frightening sounds of a thunderbolt. Thunder-clasp. Thunder-peal. A/t/a, Grievous chastisement; severe punishment)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., Connects words, phrases or clauses; also; but; additionally; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)

وَاِذۡ اٰتَيۡنَا مُوۡسَى الۡكِتٰبَ وَالۡفُرۡقَانَ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَهۡتَدُوۡنَ‏

                Wa-iz-aa-tai-naa-moo-sul-kay-taa-ba-wul-foor-qaa-na-la-ul-la-koom-tuh-ta-doo-n.

               And call to mind when We gave Moses the Book and the Criterion so that you may be guided.

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., Connects words, phrases or clauses; also; but; additionally; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)

ثُمَّ عَفَوۡنَا عَنۡكُمۡ مِّنۡۢ بَعۡدِ ذٰلِكَ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَشۡكُرُوۡنَ‏

Thoom-ma-afao-naa-un-koom-min-bau-day-zaa-lay-ka-la-ul-la-koom-tush-ko-roo-n.

               Then We forgave you after all that so that you may be grateful.

وَاِذۡ وٰعَدۡنَا مُوۡسٰٓى اَرۡبَعِيۡنَ لَيۡلَةً ثُمَّ اتَّخَذۡتُمُ الۡعِجۡلَ مِنۡۢ بَعۡدِهٖ وَاَنۡـتُمۡ ظٰلِمُوۡنَ

             Wa-iz-waa-ud-naa-moo-saa-ur-ba-ee-na-lai-la-ton–thoom-mut-ta-khuz-to-mool-ij-la-min-bau-day-he-wa-un-toom-zaa-lay-moo-n.

             And when We promised Moses forty nights. Then you picked the calf to worship after him. And you surely were or became the wrongdoers.

* Note 002:052.   Translators often use the fill-in-the-blanks-info-within-the-parenthesis method to convey the real intent of the original text deemed vital but missed in the translation.    As a sample of how A R Omar translated the explanation of this verse by Allamah Nooruddin: “We made an appointment with Moses (that) of (spending) forty nights (on Mount Sinai), then you took (to worship) the (golden) calf in his absence, and you were transgressors (in doing so).”

وَاِذۡ فَرَقۡنَا بِكُمُ الۡبَحۡرَ فَاَنۡجَيۡنٰکُمۡ وَاَغۡرَقۡنَآ اٰلَ فِرۡعَوۡنَ وَاَنۡتُمۡ تَنۡظُرُوۡنَ‏

              Wa-iz-fa-ruq-naa-bay-ko-mool-bauh-ra-wa-ugh-ruq-naa-aa-la-phir-auo-na-wa-un-toom-tun-zo-roo-n.

             And call to mind when We parted the ocean for you. Then We saved you. And We drowned the followers of Pharaoh and you were watching.

وَاِذۡ نَجَّيۡنٰکُمۡ مِّنۡ اٰلِ فِرۡعَوۡنَ يَسُوۡمُوۡنَكُمۡ سُوۡٓءَ الۡعَذَابِ يُذَبِّحُوۡنَ اَبۡنَآءَكُمۡ وَيَسۡتَحۡيُوۡنَ نِسَآءَكُمۡ‌ؕ وَفِىۡ ذٰلِكُمۡ بَلَاۤءٌ مِّنۡ رَّبِّكُمۡ عَظِيۡمٌ‏

 

Wa-iz-nuj-jai-naa-koom-min-aa-lay-phir-ao-na
Ya-soo-moo-na-koom-soo-ul-azaa-bay
Yo-zub-bay-hoo-na-ub-naa-aa-koom-wa-yus-tuh-yoo-na-nay-saa-aa-koom
Wa-fee-zaa-lay-koom-ba-laa-oom-mir-rub-bay-koom-azeem.

 

And recall when We rescued you from the followers of Pharaoh.
They were inflicting on you the worst kind of punishment.
They were killing your sons and sparing your women.
And in that was a tremendous trial for you from your God.

  • اَبۡنَآءَ — Ub-naa-aa — Sons (= Boys; men; males children; male members of family)

  • يَسۡتَحۡيُوۡنَ — Yus-tuh-yoo-na — Sparing (= Giving life; keeping alive)
  • نِسَآءَ — Nay-saa-aa — Women (= Girls; female children; female members of family; women folk. a/t/a women to make them immodest?)
  • کُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., 2nd person. You all. See  کُمۡ  above)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., Connects words, phrases or clauses; also; but; additionally; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • فِىۡ — Fee — In  (= Contained in or amidst a duration, event, time, place, period, thing or situation; inside)
  • ذٰلِكُمۡ — Zaa-lay-koom — For you in this (= ذٰلِك means ‘this here’, and for کُمۡ see above)
  • بَلَاۤءٌ — Ba-laa-oon — Trial (= Ordeal; test; hard task. A/t/a Chastisement; doom; penalty; torment; torture; scourge; unbearable situation)
  • مِّنۡ — Mi…(r) — From (= Among, from or out of a class, category, count or kind or out of several persons or things)
  • رَّبِّ — Rub-bay — God (= The Almighty Allah who fills all needs of all creatures;
    Creator; Guardian; Master; The Lord Provident; The Only One Who provides all that sustains life. Ultimate Provider of air, water, food and whatever we and all other creatures need to live and subsist)
  • کُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., 2nd person. You all. See  کُمۡ   above)
  • عَظِيۡمٌ — Azeem — Tremendous (= superlative form indicates the greatest, the highest, the most and highlights that none more than the described person or thing is great.   Someone or something which is extremely and infinitely magnificent.   In Arabic this word accentuates the prior condition and so is used to describe an extremely good and wonderful condition as well as a deplorable abjectly poor situation)

* Note 002:050.   All words from here till the end of this verse are exactly the same as in 014:007 except for one word.   That word وَ  IS ABSENT in this verse 002:050 between the words الۡعَذَابِ and يُذَبِّحُوۡنَ.   That word وَ  IS PRESENT in the verse 014:007 between the words الۡعَذَابِ and يُذَبِّحُوۡنَ.   The reiterated message reminded the Children of Israel of their abjectly poor conditions.   The Almighty God greatly blessed them by getting them out of cruel clutches of Pharaoh.   Thus Moslems were warned (Commentary Are Jews and Moslems alike- 002:046?‘) also.   Indeed the rule is that such fate could befall any nation who behaved as prior people did.

 The Holy Qor-aan                                       100:007                                              اِنَّ الۡاِنۡسَانَ لِرَبِّهٖ لَـكَنُوۡدٌ In-nul-in-saa-na-le-rub-bay-hee-la-ka-nood                                                                        Certainly man to his God is ungrateful

The Holy Qor-aan                                         100:008                                                 وَاِنَّهٗ عَلٰى ذٰلِكَ لَشَهِيۡدٌ Wa-inna-hoo-alaa-zaa-le-ka-la-sha-heed                                                                                And surely he is witness on all that

The Holy Qor-aan                                          100:009                                              وَاِنَّهٗ لِحُبِّ الۡخَيۡرِ لَشَدِيۡدٌ Wa-inna-hoo-lay-hoob-bil-khai-ray-la-sha-deed                                                                    And surely the goods he loves strongly

The Holy Qor-aan                                          100:010                                    اَفَلَا يَعۡلَمُ اِذَا بُعۡثِرَ مَا فِى الۡقُبُوۡرِ‏ A-fa-laa-yau-la-mo-ezaa-bo-se-ra-maa-fil-qo-boor                                                           Won’t he know when raised what will be in the graves

The Holy Qor-aan                                          100:011                                               وَحُصِّلَ مَا فِى الصُّدُوۡرِۙ‏ Wa-hoos-se-la-maa-fis-so-door                                                                                                    And gathered will be what the hearts had craves?

وَعَلَّمَ اٰدَمَ الۡاَسۡمَآءَ كُلَّهَا ثُمَّ عَرَضَهُمۡ عَلَى الۡمَلٰٓٮِٕكَةِ فَقَالَ اَنۡۢبِــُٔوۡنِىۡ بِاَسۡمَآءِ هٰٓؤُلَآءِ اِنۡ كُنۡتُمۡ صٰدِقِيۡنَ‏

             

Wa-ul-la-ma-aa-da-mul-us-maa-aa-kool-la-haa                                                                        Thoom-ma-ara-dza-hoom-alul-ma-laa-aiy-ka-tay                                                                        Fa-qaa-la-um-bay-oo-nee-bay-us-maa-aiy                                                                                   Haa-olaa-aiy-in-koon-toom-sua-day-qee-n.

And He taught Adam the names, all of them.                                                                    Then He presented them to the angels.                                                                              Then He said to them, “Tell me the names                                                                          Of all these if you were truthful.”

  • كُلَّ — Kool-la — All (= Altogether; each and everyone; entirely; everything without exception; totally; wholly)
  • هَا — Haa — Them (= pro., s., f., 3rd person. Refers to the category of names)
  • ثُمَّ — Thoom-ma — Then (= After that; subsequently; thereafter)
  • عَرَضَ — Aa-ra-dza — Presented (= Displayed; laid bare; laid before; placed; set before)
  • ھُمۡ‌ — Hoom — Them (= pl., m., in 3rd person. (= Refers to the objects whose names He had taught Adam)
  • عَلٰى — Al…(ul) — To (= Above; against; before; for; on top of; over; upon)
  • الۡمَلٰٓٮِٕكَةِ —  Ma-laa-aiy-ka-tay — Angels (= pl., Immortal beings being attendant to God; kind, loving and lovable persons)
  • فَ — Fa — So (= Consequently; as a resultant; then; thereafter; therefore; yet)
  • قَا لَ — Qaa-la — He said (= v., past, s., m., 3rd person.  Commanded; declared; ordered decreed; demanded; directed; instructed; ordered)
  • اَنۡۢبِــُٔوۡ — Um-bay-oo — Tell (= Announce; bring forward; declare; disclose; inform; lay bare; lay down; reveal; say; show state)
  • نِىۡ — Nee — Me (= s., 1st person. The Almighty refers to Himself)
  • ب — Bay — With (= This word in Arabic literally means ‘with)
  • اَسۡمَآءِ — Us-maa-aiy — Name (= n., pl., See الۡاَسۡمَآءَ above for more meanings)
  • هٰٓؤُلَآءِ — Haa-olaa-aiy — All these (= Refers to the objects whose names He had taught Adam)
  • اِنِ — In — If (= If situation arises; in case; under the circumstances)
  • كُنۡ — Koon — Were (= Conveys continuity from the past and going into future)
  • تُمۡ — Toom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person. You all. Refers to the angles)
  • صٰدِقِيۡنَ  — Sua-day-qee-n — Truthful (= Honest; right; sincere; speaking the truth)

The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                              002:047

 

الَّذِيۡنَ يَظُنُّوۡنَ اَنَّهُمۡ مُّلٰقُوۡا رَبِّهِمۡ وَاَنَّهُمۡ اِلَيۡهِ رٰجِعُوۡنَ

 

Ul-la-zee-na-ya-zoon-noo-na                                                                                                              Un-na-hoom-mo-laa-qoo-rub-bay-him                                                                                           Wa-un-na-hoom-elai-hay-raa-jay-oon.

 

Those who believe that                                                                                                              They are going to meet their God                                                                                           And they are going to return to Him.

 

  • ٱلَّذِينَ — Ul-la-zee-na — Those who (= pl., m., 3rd person. Refers to those eager to meet God)
  • يَظُنُّوۡنَ — Ya-zoon-noo-na — Believe (= v., Absolutely and positively and with certainty they know; also bear in mind; consider; construe; know full-well for certain imagine; mindful; thinking of or about)
  • اَنَّ — Un-na — Definitely (= Absolutely; certainly; doubtlessly; earnestly; indeed; in all seriousness; know for certain; positively; really; surely; truly; verily; with certainty)
  • هُمۡ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Reference here is to those who are eager to meet the Almighty God) 
  • مُّلٰقُوۡا — Mo-la-qoo — Meet (= v., Be with; confront; join; face)
  • رَبِّ — Rub-bay — God (= The Almighty Allah who fills needs of all creatures;
    Creator; Guardian; Master; Lord Provident. The Only One Who provides all that sustains life. Ultimate Provider of air, water, food and whatever we and all other creatures need to live and subsist)
  • هِمۡ — Him — Their (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Reference here is to those who are eager to meet the Almighty God)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., Connects words, phrases or clauses; also; but; additionally; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • اَنَّ — Un-na — Definitely (= Absolutely; certainly; doubtlessly; earnestly; indeed; in all seriousness; know for certain; positively; really; surely; truly; verily; with certainty)
  • هُمۡ — Hoom — They (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Reference here is to those who are eager to meet the Almighty God)
  • اِلَيۡ — E-lai — To (= In the direction of; to; towards)
  • هِ — Hay — That (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to the Almighty God)

.

وَاتَّقُوۡا يَوۡمًا لَّا تَجۡزِىۡ نَفۡسٌ عَنۡ نَّفۡسٍ شَيۡـًٔـا وَّلَا يُقۡبَلُ مِنۡهَا عَدۡلٌ وَّلَا تَنۡفَعُهَا شَفَاعَةٌ وَّلَا هُمۡ يُنۡصَرُوۡنَ‏

      

Wut-ut-qoo-yao-mun-laa-tuj-zee-nuf-soon-un-nuf-sin-shai-un                                          Wa-laa-yooq-ba-lo-min-haa-ud-loon                                                                                              Wa-laa-tun-fa-o-haa-sha-faa-aa-toon                                                                                            Wa-laa-hoom-yoon-sa-roo-n.

              

And fear that one day when no soul will avail another soul                                        And no compensation will be accepted from it                                                                  And no intercession will benefit it                                                                                        And they will not be helped.

  • عَنۡ — Un — About (= 1. Concerning; regarding; relative to. 2. From)
  • نَّفۡسٍ — Nuf-soon — Soul (= n., s., Being; an individual heart, mind or soul; person)
  • شَيۡـًٔـا — Shai-un…(wa) — Anything (= Any article, item, object or phenomenon; to the least)
  • وَّ — Wa — And (= Conj., Connects words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)

  • يُقۡبَلُ — Yooq-ba-lo — Accepted (= Admitted. approved; taken; granted)

  • هَا — Haa — It (= pro., s., f., 3rd person. Refers to نَفۡسٌ, the human soul)
  • عَدۡلٌ — Ud-loon — Compensation (= Equivalent; expiation; ransom; retribution; substitute)
  • وَّ — Wa — And (= Conj., Connects words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • لَا — Laa — Not (= Absolute denial; never; not at all; total negation)
  • تَنۡفَعُ — Tun-fa-o — Benefit (= Avail. Of any use or value. Show any profit)
  • هَا — Haa — It (= pro., s., f., 3rd person. Refers to نَفۡسٌ, the human soul)
  • شَفَاعَةٌ — Shafa-aa-toon — Intercession (= Recommendation; kind intervention; request for a favor; word of favor; speaking kind influencing word for someone else. a/t/a mediation; reconciliation)
  • وَّ — Wa — And (= Conj., Connects words, phrases or clauses.  See وَ  above)
  • لَا — Laa — Not (= Absolute denial; never; not at all; total negation)
