* Note 002:044. The Holy Qor-aan has used several derivates from the root  ق ا م . The root carries the concept of digging deep, establishing, making firm, fully observing, faithfully discharging and honestly performing.

The derivates  اَقِيۡمُوا  and  اَقَامَ  are verbs in this Command. They come just before nouns الصَّلٰوةَ (002:044) and الۡوَزۡنَ   (055:010).

Translating these two verbs in a single word include affirm, balance, comply, confirm, determine, do, enforce, establish, observe, set and weigh. Translating them in more words than one are many. The following are just a few. Attend to. Be steadfast. Comply fully. Firm up. Fully balanced. Give in full. Observe with all dictates, fullness and integrity. Perform properly and regularly. Weigh fully and honestly. Turn to. Carry out commands [005:067]. In 007:030 the translations include ‘see upright,’ ‘fix aright’ and ‘fix … aright’ and ‘Face Him only (i.e. worship none but Allah and face the Qiblah, i.e., the Ka’bah at Makkah during prayers’)

** Note 002:004a: This verse Commands doing three things. The first two commands are repeated in the Holy Qor-aan several times, both in the in the 2nd person format, i.e., ‘you’ in  اَقِيۡمُوا الصَّلٰوةَ وَاٰتُوا الزَّكٰوةَ , or in the 3rd person format, i.e., ‘they’ in  اَقَامَ الصَّلٰوةَ وَاٰتَى الزَّکٰوةَ.

The first command is to offer الصَّلٰوةَ  (Saa-laa-ta) or prayers that refers to two things.

  1. It’s beseeching, invoking, praying, requesting, supplicating and worshiping the Almighty God. This act involves praying night and day in everything with full focus and attention [003:192].
  2. It refers to one specified It was mandated upon Israelites [verses 002:044 and 002:084]. Later it was prescribed for Moslems as well [verses 002:111 and 005:056]. It is included in the Five basic worships mandated upon Moslems [See our Commentary ISLAM – 104 — 5 Acts of worships or pillars of Islam].

The second Command is to pay الزَّکٰوةَ  (Zakaat) i.e., bring about one’s purification.

  1. Translations of Zakat have been many. Alms. Alms-tax. Alms that purify. Charity. Donation. Portion of income paid as alms or tithes to purify earnings and soul. Poor due. Poor-rate. Purification. The amount invested in the causes of Allah, to make earnings grow and to reap greater rewards in the future and Hereafter.
  2. This worship is to adduce, collect, display or produce for Zakat and show and spend it to improve the life of everyone alike. Zakat is not the same as  صد قه  (= Saud-quah) meant for only the less fortunate and not for others; see Charity in Commentary “Tr – Azam Al, an Ahmadi Moslem – Ch 06 – Food
  3. So-called religious scholars have turned this worship for …                                     *  Abusing it as the means to measure a Moslem’s sincerity of Faith.                             Developing sophisticated mafia-style art to extract collections for it.                     *  Exploiting it for public show and discrediting the non-compliant.                             Practically encouraging the criticism that Islam has justified exhibitionism.         Examples of misusing this worship include Pakistan (with its largest number of beggars than any other Muslim country” as reported by its journalists in Jan 2026, A.D.), Saudi Arab (as shown in our Commentary Islam – Zakat) and India (as shown in our Commentary Religion, Islam and Sikhs)

These two Commands are repeated in words [verses 002:044, 002:084, 002:111, 002:178, 002:278, 022:079, 073:021] and in essence [verses like 005:056, 009:011, 009:071, 019:056, 098-006]

The third Command is reiterated also, such as in in verse  005:056.

One significance of these Commands is that a man should by these physical actions express love for (a) his Creator, the Almighty God and (b) His creation, his fellow beings. . This precisely why the Arabic word for man is  اِنۡسَا ن  (In-saan) which means one with two loves, i.e., love for God and love for fellow human

To add words like everlastingly, for ever after, permanently and perpetually is inappropriate for those who will go   to hell. Adding such a qualification is appropriate only for the residents of Paradise . Some interpreters have incorrectly labeled this period to last forever. See Note 002:040)

Note 002:040. The word خٰلِدُوۡنَ  literally means abiders, dwellers, live-ins, stayers or residents ‘for an unspecified length of time’.  It is used in verses like 002:026, 002:040, 002:082, 002:083, 002:218, 002:258, 002:276 and 003:117. It is also used in a different format such as in [ خٰلِدِيۡنَ فِيۡهَا  ] in other places like 002:163, 003:089, 004:014, 005:086, 059:018, 098:007 and 098:009.

Some scholars added the word ‘forever’ in translating this word. The concept ‘for a long time’ in the meanings of this word was thus replaced by that in forever or without ever ending. Such addition is appropriate in case of heavens and paradise as a perpetual reward to the righteous to continue forever for the good they did in this life.

But attaching words like forever, perpetual or everlasting to Hell, Hell Fire or Purgatory as a punishment for doing wrongs in this life is different. Many scholars insist that any human addition, extension, extrapolation, minimization or subtraction to the simple and straightforward meanings of the original text because of any spiritual or temporal, social or cultural, punitive or reformative consideration is NOT warranted. Such view appears to be right.

Adding the concept of ‘forever‘ to the “punishment for wrongs done in this temporary life on earth” contradicts the reported quotations [Ahaadeeth] of the Holy Prophet, s.a.w, such as A day will come when gates of hell will flap and flutter in the windwhich imply as follows.

  • That the fires of hell would have died and there would be no more need to guard its gates.
  • That all those sent there initially would have finished serving sentences and completing punishment for wrongs they did in this life.
  • That people after due correction [as in a Correction Facility] or cure [as in a hospital] would have finally become fit to be admitted to the Paradise.

*** Note 002:039c.  The Almighty Allah has stated one of His Rules of Universal Application in the words لَا خَوۡفٌ عَلَيۡهِمۡ وَلَا هُمۡ يَحۡزَنُوۡن (No fear upon them. And they do not grieve)Anyone can label it as an assurance, consolation, guaranty, promise, reward or whatever name one chooses.  But in nutshell He has established His rule that He rewards the good deeds and has repeated it for several groups of people including the following.

  • Who get guidance from Allah and then follow it – 002:039
  • Who believe in Allah, Day of Judgment and do good deeds – 002:063, 005:070
  • Who focus all their attention to Allah and focus on doing the good deeds – 002:113

  • Who spend their wealth night and day, secretly as well as openly – 002:275
  • Who believe, do good deeds, establish prayer and pay the purification – 002:278

See the significance of repetitions in our Commentary Repetitions in the Holy Qor-aan have benefits.

**** Note 002:039d. The phrase هُمۡ يَحۡزَنُوۡنَhoom-ya-hza-noon” consists of two words.
o The first word هُمۡ (= hoom) is a pronoun that refers to ‘all those’ in masculine gender.
o The second word يَحۡزَنُوۡنَ (=Yauh-za-noon) is a verb showing the act ‘of feeling grief due to what evokes regret and remorse’ by ‘them all’ (= pro., pl., m., addressee in 3rd person).
o When a pronoun points to a person, and is followed by a verb which with one of its 14 variations refers to an action by that person, the two-worded phrase so created lays an extreme emphasis on the stated action. Thus the phrase هُمۡ يَحۡزَنُوۡنَhoom-yah-za-noon” means ‘They really and without any shadow of doubt’ feel the grief and worry.”.
o Examples of this kind including this verse are found in 002:005, 002:013, 002:014, 002:023, 002:033, 002:034, 002:038, 002:039, 002:043, 002:045, 002:063, 002:113, 002:275, 002:278 and other places in the Holy Qor-aan.  See Commentary titled as “2 pronouns or 1 pro and 1 verb mean …

See 001:002)

* Note 002:038. The basic meanings of the words derived from the Arabic Root  ت  ا  ب  revolve around returning or reversing. The translations of this word are so vast and varied that they can’t be compressed or condensed in a single word or phrase in English. The word implies 1) return, 2) reversal to the core truth and 3) human regret and repentance for forgiveness.

The concept of return or reversal is carried in every derivate of this root such as follows.

  • تَا بَ  (taa-ba = v., past., s., 3rd person) means He turned or returned in extreme compassion to forgive. As a man’s act it also means repented. regretted, reversed, felt remorse, etc.
  • يَتُوۡبُ  (ya-too-bo = v., pres., s., 3rd person) means He turns or returns in extreme compassion to forgive. As a man’s act it also means repents, regrets, reverses. feels remorse, etc.
  • التَّوۡبَةُ  (ta–ba-too-n = n., s) means a man’s act of turning, returning,, reversing, repentance, regret and being remorseful.
  • التَّوَّابُ (tuw-waab = n., s.,) means The One who turns or returns to forgive man’s faults, mistakes, sins and wrongs compassionately, generously, graciously and mercifully. It is like when Adam had admitted, confessed and apologized for his wrong, and God Almighty had …                                                                                                                                         * Turned to him and forgave in kindness and compassion;                                                     * Accepted his regret, remorse and repentance;                                                                         * Forgave him after admission of fault, guilt and sin;                                                                 * Granted his regret compassionately and mercifully;                                                               * Pardoned him and relented towards him with kindness; and                                               * Showered upon him mercy generously and readily.

The Holy Qor-aan has used the derivates from the root ت  ا  ب   in many verses.

  1. As an act of God Almighty, such derivates followed by the word عَلَيۡ (alai meaning on, upon, to or towards) mean that He turns or turned towards man to accept his apology and afforded him another opportunity to make necessary amends. This is shown in verses like 002:038, 002:055, 002:161, 002:188, 004:018, 004:027, 004:028, 005:040, etc.
  2. As an act of man, the word  تَا بَ  (taa-ba) or other derivates of its roots appear in several verses including 002:280, 004:018, etc. Additionally, this word followed by the verbاَصۡلَحَ  or other derivates reiterates the Repentance Requires Reformation rule that makes man mend his ways as stated in verses 002:161, 004:017, 004:147, 005:040, 006:055, etc.

The Holy Qor-an                                                                                                             002:036

وَقُلۡنَا يٰٓـاٰدَمُ اسۡكُنۡ اَنۡتَ وَزَوۡجُكَ الۡجَـنَّةَ وَكُلَا مِنۡهَا رَغدًا حَيۡثُ شِئۡتُمَا ‏وَلَا تَقۡرَبَا هٰذِهِ الشَّجَرَةَ فَتَكُوۡنَا مِنَ الظّٰلِمِيۡنَ

Verse 002:036 has the words قُلۡنَا and رَغدًا additionally, and  وَ  before كُلَا instead of                  فَ as in verse 007:020; otherwise the text in both these verses is identical.

And We said, “Listen Adam!                                                                                              You and your wife live in Paradise.                                                                                  And you both eat from there in plenty wherever you both like.                                 And you both do not come close to this tree                                                               For then you both would become among the wrongdoers.
