The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                                002:017

اُولٰٓٮِٕكَ الَّذِيۡنَ اشۡتَرَوُا الضَّلٰلَةَ بِالۡهُدٰى  فَمَا رَبِحَتۡ تِّجَارَتُهُمۡ وَمَا كَانُوۡا مُهۡتَدِيۡنَ○‏

 

 

Olaa-aiy-kul-la-zee-nush-ta-ro-woodz-dza-laa-la-ta-bil-ho-daa                                               Fa-maa-ra-bay-hut-tay-jaa-ra-to-hoom-wa-maa-kaa-noo-moh-ta-dee-n.

 

They are those who bought the erring with the Guidance.                                           Thus their trade did not benefit them and they had not been guided at all.

 

  • اُولٰٓٮِٕكَ — Olaa-aiy-ka…(ul — They all (= Facts, persons or things)
  • ٱلَّذِينَ — La-zee-n…(ush) — Those who (= pl., m, 3rd person. The aforesaid persons)
  • اشۡتَرَوُا — Sh-tara-wo(dz)  — Bought (= Bartered; purchased; traded)
  • الضَّلٰلَةَ — Dza-laa-la-ta — The Erring (= Beguiled ways; lost lines; poor path; wrong road)
  • بِ — B…(il) — With  (= Against; in exchange for; instead of, at the price of)
  • الۡهُدٰى — Ho-daa — Guidance (= n., Correct course; proper path; right road, line or way)
  • فَ — Fa — Thus (= Consequently; as a resultant; then; thereafter; therefore; so; thus; yet) 
  • مَاۤ — Maa — All that (= What or whatever in the aforesaid category)
  • رَبِحَتۡ — Ra-bay-hut — Benefited (= v., Blossomed; gained; profited; turned prosperous. Got them no benefit, gain or profit from this trade)
  • تِّجَارَتُ — Tay-jaa-ra-to — Trade (= Bargain; barter; commerce; purchase)
  • هُمۡ — Hoom — Their (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Refers to the aforesaid foolish persons and hypocrites)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., Connects words, phrases or clauses; also; but; additionally; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • مَاۤ — Maa — Not at all (= Never; no)
  • كَانُوۡا — Kaa-noo — Have been (= Conveys continuation; refers to ‘all those’, in third person)
  • مُهۡتَدِيۡنَ — Moh-ta-dee-n — Guided (= On correct, good, proper or right course, line, path, road or way)

The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                       002:016

اَللّٰهُ يَسۡتَهۡزِئُ بِهِمۡ وَيَمُدُّهُمۡ فِىۡ طُغۡيَانِهِمۡ يَعۡمَهُوۡنَ○‏

.

Al-laa-ho-yus-tauh-zay-o-bay-him-wa-ya-mood-do-hoom                                                                                Fee-toogh-yaa-nay-him-yau-ma-hoo-n.

.

Allah mocks at them and increases them                                                                               In their contumacy, wandering  blindly .

  • اللّٰهُ — Al-laa-ho — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)
  • يَسۡتَهۡزِئُ — Yus-tauh-zay-o — Mocks (= v., pes., s., 3rd person. 1. Derides; jests; jokes; kids; laughs; makes others fool; ridicules. 2. Pays them for their joking by punishing them; throws back at them)
  • بِ — Bay — At  (= Sometimes its English translation  ‘at’ is also possible)
  • هِمۡ — Him — Them (= pro., pl., m., in 3rd person. Refers to the aforesaid foolish persons and hypocrites)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., Connects words, phrases or clauses; also; but; additionally; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • يَمُدُّ — Ya-mood-do –Increases (= v., pes., s., 3rd person. ‘Extend,’ ‘is now’ or ‘soon will’ give a long rope, increase, keep long, spread, stretch or widen in sin and evil ways)
  • هُمۡ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. They; theirs. See هِمۡ above)

The text in the following four (4) words is repeated in 002:016 and 006:111.

  • فِىۡ — Fee — In (= Amidst. Among. Contained or inside a duration, event, place, period, person, phenomenon, situation, thing or time. See Note 002:028)
  • طُغۡيَانِ — Toogh-yaa-nay — Contumacy (= n., Agitation; insurrection; inordinacy; insolence; revolution; stubbornness; rebellion; transgression; upheaval; uprising; violent ways; wrongdoing)
  • هِمۡ — Him — Their (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. They; their; theirs. Refers to the aforesaid foolish persons and their hypocrisies)
  • يَعۡمَهُوۡنَ — Yau-ma-hoo-n — Wandering blindly (=v., pres., pl., 3rd person. Blundering; going round and round without seeing or going anywhere; making no progress)

وَاِذَا لَقُوۡا الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا قَالُوۡاۤ اٰمَنَّا ۖۚ  وَاِذَا خَلَوۡا اِلٰى شَيٰطِيۡنِهِمۡۙ قَالُوۡاۤ اِنَّا مَعَكُمۡۙ اِنَّمَا نَحۡنُ مُسۡتَهۡزِءُوۡنَ‏

                                                                                                                                                                Wa-ezaa-la-qool-la-zee-na-aa-ma-noo-qaa-loo-aa-mun-naa                                                           Wa-ezaa-kha-lao-elaa-sha-yaa-te-nay-him-qaa-loo-in-naa-ma-aa-koom                                    In-na-maa-nuh-no-moos-tuh-zay-oon.

 

And when they met those who had believed, they said, “We have believed.” And when they go to their evil friends in privacy they say, ‘We are with you.  We surely were just kidding them.”

  • اٰمَنَّا — Aaa-mun-na — We believed – (= v., past., pl. 1. We have totally and wholeheartedly believed in the Holy Qor-aan, Islaam and are Moslems. 2. We embraced and entered the Faith and are faithful)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ above)
  • اِذَا — Ezaa — When * (= Any time or event; now that; whenever)
  • خَلَوۡا — Kha-lao — Go in privacy (= Alone; go apart; isolate; seclude; separate)
  • اِلٰى — Elaa — To  (= In the direction of; towards)
  • شَيٰطِيۡنِ Sha-yaa-te-nay Evil friends (= pl., Bad, false or evil deities, friends or leader; devils;evil spirited persons; hypocrites; idol-worshipers; polytheists; ring-leaders; Satanic companions)
  • هِمۡ — Him — Their (= pro., pl, .m., 3rd person. Refers to the hypocrites)
  • قَالُوۡا — Qaa-loo — They said (= All those announced; assured; conveyed; declared; informed; professed; replied; specified; stated; told)
  • اِنَّ — In-na — Really (= Certainly; definitely; doubtlessly; earnestly; inwardly;positively; surely; truly; verily)
  • نَآ — Naa — We (= pro., pl., m & f., 1st person., We.  All of Us)
  • مَعَ — Ma-aa — With (= Along with; company; follow; go alongside)
  • كُمۡۙ – Koom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person. You men. Here the reference is to the Israelites بَنِىۡٓ اِسۡرَآءِيۡلَ. Generally this way the Holy Qor-aan addresses both men and women)
  • اِنَّمَا — In-na-maa — Surely that (= This is a combination of two words اِنَّ meaning absolutely,certainly, definitely; surely; truly; verily and  مَاۤ meaning all that, whatever, whatsoever)
  • نَحۡنُ — Nuh-no — We (= pro., pl. m & f., 1st person)
  • مُسۡتَهۡزِءُوۡنَ — Moos-tuh-ze-oon Kidding (= Deriding; jesting; joking; laughing at; making others fools; mocking; ridiculing)

* Note 002:015. The first 9 words of the verse 002:015 are repeated in 002:077.  They indicate how the disbelievers who really are hypocrites mingle with the believers. That way the sabotage is with their hypocrite actions from the inside attempting implosion. The attacks like that normally cause more damage than the open attacks from the outside. The believers have been perpetually warned about such dangers and take all precautions. The disbelievers always argue defensively that they were just joking and were not serious. But the Almighty Allah has cautioned the believers about the hidden agenda of miscreants.

The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                               002:014

وَاِذَا قِيۡلَ لَهُمۡ اٰمِنُوۡا كَمَاۤ اٰمَنَ النَّاسُ قَالُوۡاۤ اَنُؤۡمِنُ كَمَاۤ اٰمَنَ السُّفَهَآءُ‌ ؕ اَلَاۤ اِنَّهُمۡ هُمُ السُّفَهَآءُ وَلٰـكِنۡ لَّا يَعۡلَمُوۡنَ○‏

 

Wa-ezaa-qee-la-la-hoom-aa-may-noo-ka-maa-aa-ma-nun-naa-so                                          Qaa-loo-aa-noe-may-no-ka-maa-aa-ma-nus-so-fa-haa-o                                                           Alaa-in-na-hoom-ho-moos-so-fa-haa-o-wa-laa-kin-laa-yau-la-moon.

 

And recall when it was said to them, ‘Believe like other people have believed’.  They retorted “Shall we believe like the foolish have believed?”                               Isn’t it that really they are the foolish but they just don’t know?

  • مَاۤ — Maa — All others  (= All that; whatever; whatsoever)
  • اٰمَنَ — Aa-ma-n…(un) — Believed (= v., Moslems; believers in the Holy Qor-aan and Islaam)
  • النَّاسُ — Naa-so — People (= Folks; mankind; nation)
  • قَالُوۡا — Qaa-loo — They retorted (= v., Announced; asserted; conveyed; declared; stated informed; replied; responded; said; specified; told)
  • اَ  — Aa  — Shall {= A question mark like ‘Are?, ‘Can?, ‘Do?, and ‘Will?)
  • نُؤۡمِنُ — Noe-may-no — We believe (= v., Enter faith; follow the Holy Qor-aan, the Islaam and become Moslems)
  • كَ — Ka — Like (= Identical to; resembling; similar to)
  • مَاۤ — Maa — The way — (= All that; whatever; whatsoever)
  • اٰمَنَ — Aa-ma-n…(us) — Believed (= v., Moslems who believe in the Holy Qor-aan and Islaam)
  • السُّفَهَآءُ‌ — So-fa-haa-o — The foolish (= n., pl., Ignorant, low-witted; retarded, silly, slow or stupid)
  • اَلَاۤ — Alaa — Isn’t it (= Isn’t it a fact? The letter أ expresses a question mark. The word لَا means ‘never, no, not at all’. Joined  they generate ‘a great emphasis’ which is conveyed by the words like beware, listen, pay attention and remember)
  • اِنَّ — In-na — Really  *  (= Certainly; definitely; doubtlessly; indeed; positively; surely; truly; verily)
  • هُمۡ — Hoom — Them  *  (= pro., pl, .m., 3rd person. Refers to the aforesaid foolish persons)
  • هُمُ — Ho-mo…(os) — Them  *  (= pro., pl, .m., 3rd person. Refers to the aforesaid foolish persons)
  • السُّفَهَآءُ‌ — So-fa-haa-o — The foolish (= Persons who are foolish, ignorant, low-witted; retarded, silly, slow or stupid)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., Connects words, phrases or clauses; also; but; additionally; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • لٰـكِنَّ — Laa-kin..(la) — But (= However; nevertheless; yet)
  • لَّا — Laa — Not at all (= Absolutely not; no; never)
  • يَعۡلَمُوۡنَ — Yau-la-moon — They know (= Are aware or conscious)

* Note 002:014.  Read Commentary titled “2 pronouns or 1 pro and 1 verb mean…”  The phrase اِنَّهُمۡ هُمُ السُّفَهَآءُ  “inna-ho-ho-moo” consists of three words.

  • The first word اِنَّ (= in-na) means “certainly; definitely; doubtlessly; indeed; positively; really; surely; truly, verily.”
  • The second word هُمۡ (= hoom) is a pronoun (= pl., m., addressees in 3rd person) referring to all those people.
  • The third word هُمۡ (= hoom) is also a pronoun (= pl., m., addressees in 3rd person) referring to all those people.
  • A phrase duplicating two pronouns like هُمۡ after another هُمۡ lays a tremendous emphasis on the person highlighted. Thus اِنَّهُمۡ هُمُ السُّفَهَآء “inna-ho-ho-moo” means ‘Surely these very people are’ – as described – ‘the Foolish’ in instant case.
  • Examples of this kind including this verse are found in 002:005; 002:013; 002:014; 002:023; 002:033; 002:034, 002:038; 002:043; 002:045 and other places in the Holy Qor-aan.

Superiority of one Religion

Superiority of one Religion over all others

Claim of superiority of a religion is claimed by almost all followers of all religions over all others. The one exception — and that too academically and based upon the scriptures which its adherents hold holy — is Islaam as given to the mankind in the form of the Holy Qor-aan and revealed upon the Holy Prophet Mohammed, peace and blessings of Allah upon him. The three verses which merit consideration in this regard are 002:063, 005:070 and 022:018 (Verse-numbers being those as given in the texts that include the verse Bismillahirrahmaanirraheem as the verse #1). The text and word-by-word meanings of these verses can be seen online, and at www.thetrueteachingsofislam.com.

Yes, there is a Superiority !

My father’s passion was to preach the virtues of Islaam to anyone who came within inches of him. Of the innumerable stories about his such encounters was the one that he himself told. He was presenting virtues of Islaam to a Gugra, an extremely poor class of people in India who followed no big religions. The Gugra simplistically said: ‘God threw a big ripe water-melon from the sky for its creatures. The melon crashed on earth and split into pieces. Hindus took one side of the shell (hard green rind) and Moslems took the other side of the shell, and both left behind the inside delicious eatable (sweet, watery reddish flesh). Hindus prohibit eating beef, Moslems prohibit eating pork and both left the beef and pork for us to enjoying eating. Who wants to enter those religions and suffer prohibition of the best foods on earth? No, sir, we Gugras are the best. We eat all good food God created for us.’ To that Gugra, his way of life was superior than all other religions – a phenomenon to which hardly any of today’s 1.3 billion Hindus and 1.5 billion Moslems in the world will agree.

No, there is no Superiority !

The view that no religion has any superiority over other religions is based upon the aforesaid three verses of the Holy Qor-aan which are in Arabic language. Simple straightforward meanings of the three verses, as done by Marmaduke Pickthall in his publication “The Meaning of the Glorious Qur’an” clearly convey that message. What count is (a) the belief in the One Almighty God, (b) the Last Day of Reckoning and (c) the virtuous deeds done appropriately which all will be rewarded by Him appropriately at the time He holds the final accounting. The labels of being Moslems, Jews, Christians, Sabians, Magian, idolaters may not help much when He will decide among them. And a knowledgeable person negated such superiority by quoting the gist of 041:031-to-033 (rewards for ‘belief’ in Allah) and that too as per ‘one’s capacity to comprehend’ (the opening words of 002:087.)

Imam Abdullah Yusuf Ali in his publication “The Holy Qur’an” Note #779 wrote, “As God’s message is one, Islam recognizes true faith in other forms, provided that it be sincere, supported by reason, and backed by righteous conduct.” Repeating the same essence again in his Note #2788, he wrote: “The argument is that all forms of faith that are sincere (and not merely contumacious) are matters in which we as men cannot interfere. Our duty is to be tolerant within all limits of tolerance …. (without) oppression, injustice and persecution.”

Maulana Muhammad Ali wrote in his publication “Holy Quran” Note #104 wrote: “This … strikes at the root of the idea of a favoured nation whose members alone may be entitled to salvation … Salvation cannot be attained by mere lip-profession by any people, not even by the Muslims, unless they adhere to a true belief and do good deeds.”

Yes, there is superiority !

However, the opposite view claiming an absolute superiority of Islaam on all other religions has been professed in some translations, interpretations and extrapolations of the aforesaid verses.

Malik Ghulam Farid in his publication The Holy Qur’an Note #104 wrote: “Verse (002:063), as mistakenly understood, does not signify that belief in God and in the Last Day alone is sufficient for salvation. The Qur’an emphatically declares that belief in the Holy Prophet is most essential {004:151/152 and 006:093} and forms an integral part of belief in God, and also that the belief in the Hereafter includes belief in Divine revelations as well … Elsewhere, Islam alone has been unequivocally declared to be acceptable to God as a religion {003:020 & 086}. The Qur’an here (in 002:063) confines itself to a mention of belief in God and the Last Day, not because belief in revelation and in the Holy Prophet is not essential, but because the former two beliefs include the latter two, the four being essentially inseparable. In fact, the verse is intended to demolish the mistaken Jewish belief that they were ‘the favoured nation of God’ and, therefore, were alone entitled to salvation.” He repeated that concept in his Note # 1939 (to 022:018): “This verse and vv {002:063 and 005:070} do not signify that Christians, Jews, and Sabians are equally eligible to salvation along with true believers. The Qur’an does not support any such belief. According to it the only religion acceptable to God is Islam (003:020 & 086.”

Maulana Muhammad Ali in his publication “The Holy Quran” Note #104 and referring to verses 022:018 stated: “The existence of good men in other religions is not denied by the Holy Qur’ran, but perfect peace, or the state of absolute contentment which is indicated by freedom from fear and grief, is obtainable only in Islam, because Islam alone is the religion of absolute submission to the Divine Being.”

Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan in his publication “Interpretation of the Meanings of the Noble Qur’an”, Note 2 to verse 002:063 and Note 1 to 005:070, wrote: “… Should not be misinterpreted by the reader as mentioned by Ibn-e-Abbas (r.a.) (in Tafsir At-Tabari) that this verse was abrogated by the V:3.85 “And whosoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the hereafter, he will be one of the losers.” {i.e., after the coming of Prophet Mohammed (s.a.w) on the earth no other religion except Islam will be accepted from anyone}.

Dr. Ahmad Zindan in his publication “Translation of the Glorious Qur’an” in translating 002:063 added the words “who (before Islam) were” before the ‘Jews’, ‘Sabians’ and Christians, thus clearly conveying that the concession, equality or even-handedness of this verse applied to only those who were Jews, Christians and Sabians prior to Islam, and not to those (or for that matter the followers of other religions) after the advent of Islam. In translating 005:070, he repeated his notion by adding “who were” before Jews, Sabians and followers of Jesus.

لِلۡفُقَرَآءِ الَّذِيۡنَ اُحۡصِرُوۡا فِىۡ سَبِيۡلِ اللّٰهِ لَا يَسۡتَطِيۡعُوۡنَ ضَرۡبًا فِى الۡاَرۡضِ يَحۡسَبُهُمُ الۡجَاهِل اَغۡنِيَآءَ مِنَ التَّعَفُّفِ‌ۚ تَعۡرِفُهُمۡ بِسِيۡمٰهُمۡ‌ۚ  لَا يَسۡـــَٔلُوۡنَ النَّاسَ اِلۡحَــافًا ‌ وَمَا تُنۡفِقُوۡا مِنۡ خَيۡرٍ فَاِنَّ اللّٰهَ بِه عَلِيۡمٌ‏

 

Lay  il-fo-qa-raa-ay  il-la-ze-na  oh-say-roo fee  sa-bee-lay  il-laa-hay                                  Laa  yaus-ta-te-oo-na  dzaur-baun  fee  il-ur-dzay                                                                      Yauh-sa-bo  ho-mo  ol-jaa-hay-lo  augh-nay-yaa-aa  may-na  ut-ta-uf-fo-fay                Tau-ray-fo  hoom  bay-see-maa  hoom                                                                                          Laa  yaus-aa-loo-na  un-naa-sa  il-haa-faun                                                                                    Wa  maa  toon-fay-qoo  min  khai-rin                                                                                                Fa  in-na  ul-laa-ha  bay  hee  aa-lee-m

 

(And alms are)                                                                                                                        For the poor who are detained in the cause of Allah                                                      They have no ability to freely move around on earth.                                              The ignorant thinks them rich due to their restraint.                                                You recognize them by their appearances.                                                                        They do not demand charity from the people importunately.                                And whatever of good things you spend                                                                              Allah knows it for sure.

 

  • لِ — Lay … (il) — For (= For the benefit, object, purpose or reason; intended for)
  • لۡفُقَرَآءِ — Fo-qa-raa-ay … (il) — The poor (= n., pl., Destitute; impoverished; homeless; needy. Some translations have added the word ‘deserving’ for the poor as a pre-qualification to entitlement for charity)
  • ٱلَّذِينَ — La-zee-na — Those who (= Reference is to ‘all those men, masculine gender’)
  • اُحۡصِرُوۡا — Oh-say-roo — Detained (= v., past., pass., pl., 3rd person. Captivated. Confined. Controlled. Detained. Imprisoned. Incarcerated.  Restrained. Restricted. Straitened. See Note 002:0274)
  • فِىۡ  — Fee — In (= In; concerning; regarding; in reference; relative to. Also, amidst, during or inside a time, place or event)
  • سَبِيۡلِ — Sa-bee-lay … (il) — Cause (= n., s., Action; alternative; cause, course; escape; line;  means; measure; method; path; pretext; remedy; road; way. See Note 004:089   & Phrase fee-sa-be-lil-laa-hay)
  • اللّٰهِ‌ — Laa-hay — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)
  • لَا — Laa — No (= Absolute denial; never; not at all; total negation)
  • يَسۡتَطِيۡعُوۡنَ — Yaus-ta-tee-oo-na — Have ability (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. Have, control, own or possess the proper ability, capability, means, measure. strength or other wherewithal to do the needful. Also, have, control, own or possess the appropriate approval, authority, permission, power, sanction or warrant to do the needful. With the word  لَا  (laa) before it, the word means forbidden, restricted, restrained or unable to do  what is necessary)

  • الۡجَاهِل — Jaa-hay-lo — The ignorant (= n., Anyone who does not know. Illiterate. Not knowing. Non-knowledgeable. Unschooled. Unthinking. One who lacks knowledge of the totality of circumstances, all conditions and the entire situation

  • النَّاسَ — Naa-sa — The people (= All and sundry; everyone; folks; mankind; nation; others.  Also, Congregations where people gather for prayers or assemble for other community affairs)
  • اِلۡحَــافًا — Il-haa-faun — Importunately (= adv., Annoyingly, demanding coercively; insistently, menacingly, persistently, repeatedly; stubbornly; threateningly; unrelentingly. Demanding with the Mafia-style arm-twisting and pressure. This word has been translated as they ‘beg not importunately from all and sundry’ and ‘never importune men  for alms’ )
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • مَاۤ — Maa — Whatever (= All that; whatsoever.  See  مَاۤ  above)
  • تُنۡفِقُوۡا — Toon-fay-qoo — You spend (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Contribute; donate; give in charity. Expend, lay, put or use for noble purposes. Help the needy. Invest in good causes. Practice giving alms. Spend assets, belongings and substance in the causes of Allah)
  • خَيۡرٍ — Khai-rin — Good things (= n., All God-given gifts and things of value such as one’s time, talent, energy, abilities, potentials and physical things like money, property, possessions and wealth. Assets of any kind)
  • فَ — Fa — Then (= Consequently; resultantly; so; thereafter; therefore; yet)
  • اِنۡ — In-na … (ul) — For sure (= Certainly; definitely; doubtlessly; indeed; positively; surely; verily. Also, be assured)
  • ٱللَّهَ — Laa-ha — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)
  • بِ — Bay — With (= Literal translation and best sense conveyed is ‘with’)
  • هٖ — He —  It (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to aforesaid spending on the type of the people enumerated in this verse)
  • عَلِيۡمٌ‏ — Aa-lee-m — All-Knowing (= superlative form indicates the greatest, the highest, the most, and highlights that none more than Him Knows. See Note 002:033. Also: Informed to the maximum. The One with total knowledge and nothing out of sight. Knows all. Most Knowledgeable. Well-Acquainted with and Well-Aware of. See Note 001:001)** Note 002:274. Accurately conveying the meanings of the word  اُحۡصِرُوۡا  includes the following as stated by various authors.
    1. Any legislated or imposed step by an overlord or authority compelling the detenu to abandon or even temporarily withdraw from something contemplated or engaged in.
    2. Any move practiced by masses forcing someone to forsake or even temporarily suspend a worship that his community has practiced, preached or professed, even for many years.
    3. Any argumentatively attempting, evangelically preaching or physically fighting done for the purposes of spreading Islam.
    4. Any restriction on travel or post-travel effort to settle in the new environment.

The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                       002:013

اَلَا ۤ اِنَّهُمۡ هُمُ الۡمُفۡسِدُوۡنَ وَلٰـكِنۡ لَّا يَشۡعُرُوۡنَ○‏

             Alaa-inna-hoom-ho-mool-moof-say-doon–wa-laa-kin-la-yush-a-roon.

Isn’t it that really they are the miscreants but they don’t realize?

  • اَلا — Alaa — Isn’t it (= Isn’t it a fact? أ expresses a question mark. The word
    لَا means ‘never, no, not at all’. Joined together they generate a great emphasis which is conveyed by the words like ‘beware, listen, pay attention or remember’)
  • اِنَّ — Inna — Really (= Certainly; definitely; doubtlessly; indeed; positively; surely; truly; verily)
  • هُمۡ — Hoom — Them * (= pro., pl., m.,  3rd person. Refers to said miscreants)
  • هُمُ — Ho-mo…(ol) — Them ** (= pro., pl., m.,  3rd person. Refers to said miscreants)
  • الۡمُفۡسِدُوۡنَ — Mof-say-doon — Miscreants (= Corrupt; corruption creators; disruption developers; evil-doers; law-breakers; mischief mongers. Those who spread the bad and the evil)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., Connects words, phrases or clauses; also; but; additionally; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • لٰـكِنَّ — La-kin…(la) — But (= Although; however; nevertheless; yet)
  • لَّا — Laa — Do not (= Absolutely not; never; not all)
  • يَشۡعُرُوۡنَ — Yush-o-roon — They realize (= Conscious; fully aware; perceive)

 

* Note 002:013.  Read Commentary titled “2 pronouns or 1 pro and 1 verb mean…”  The phrase اِنَّهُمۡ هُمُ الۡمُفۡسِدُوۡنَ   “inna-ho-ho-moo” consists of three words.

  • The first word اِنَّ (= in-na) means “certainly; definitely; doubtlessly; indeed; positively; really; surely; truly, verily.”
  • The second word هُمۡ (= hoom) is a pronoun (= pl., m., addressees in 3rd person) referring to all those people.
  • The third word هُمۡ (= hoom) is also a pronoun (= pl., m., addressees in 3rd person) referring to all those people.
  • A phrase duplicating two pronouns like هُمۡ after another هُمۡ lays a tremendous emphasis on the person highlighted. Thus اِنَّهُمۡ هُمُ الۡمُفۡسِدُوۡنَ “inna-hoom-ho-mool” means ‘Surely these very people are’ – as described – ‘the evil-doers, corrupt; corruption creators; disruption developers; law-breakers; mischief mongers; spreaders of bad and evil.’
  • Examples of this kind including this verse are found in 002:005; 002:013; 002:014; 002:023; 002:033; 002:034, 002:038; 002:043; 002:045 and other places in the Holy Qor-aan.

وَاِذَا قِيۡلَ لَهُمۡ لَا تُفۡسِدُوۡا فِىۡ الۡاَرۡضِۙ قَالُوۡاۤ اِنَّمَا نَحۡنُ مُصۡلِحُوۡنَ

.

Wa  aiy-zaa  qee-la  la  hoom  laa  too-say-doo  fee  il-ur-dzay                                                          Qaa-loo  in-na-maa  nah-no  moos-lay-hoon

And when it was said to them, “Make no mischief on earth”                                     They said, “Really we are the reformers.”

  • اِذَا — Aiy-zaa –When (= Any time or event; now that; whenever)
  • قِيۡلَ — Qee-la — Was said (= v., past., pass., s., 3rd person. It was conveyed, declared, stated or told)
  • لَ  — La — To (= For any item, person or thing)
  • هُمۡ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl, .m., 3rd person. Refers to the aforesaid people)
  • لَا — Laa — Do not (= Never; no; not at all)
  • تُفۡسِدُوۡا — Toof-say-doo — Make mischief (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Cause, commit, create, make or spread corruption, evil, disorder, law-and-order situation or mischief
  • فِىۡ — Fee … (il) — On (= In the instant case stating ‘On earth’ is more appropriate [See Note at 002:028] to convey in English the intent of original text.  Otherwise literally:- 1. Inside, amidst or contained in a duration, time, place, period, thing or situation. 2. Concerning; relative to; regarding)
  • الۡاَرۡضِ — Ur-dzay — Earth (= Area; country; earth; ground; land; territory. Life on earth; nation, people or society in general)
  • قَالُوۡا — Qaa-loo — They said (= v., past., pl., m., 3rd person. Announced; conveyed; declared; informed; invoked; prayed; professed; replied; responded; specified; stated; told. See below Note 002:012)
  • اِنَّمَا — In-na-maa — Most certainly (= Combination of two words. The first word  اِنَّ (inna) means absolutely; definitely; doubtlessly; earnestly; indeed; positively; really; seriously; surely; truly; verily. The second word  مَاۤ  (maa) means all that, what; whatever. whatsoever. Thu s اِنَّمَا  (inna-maa) lays great emphasis on the statement that follows it as absolutely, positively and most certainly accurate’)
  • نَحۡنُ — Nah-no — We are (= Pl., Refers to first person)
  • مُصۡلِحُوۡنَ — Moos-lay-hoon — Reformers (= n., pl., Do-gooders who do things right. Peacemakers. Those who make improvements in the prevailing conditions)

 

** Note 002:012: Each Root in Arabic language produces many words. Each derivative is of one of many forms (Baab for single or ab-waab for plural) of verbs, nouns, adjective, adjective or other forms recognized in other languages. Help is in our 6 Commentaries on Arabic Grammar: 1- Alphabets, 2 – Basics, 3 – Pronouns, 4 – Preciseness, 5 – Punctuations and 6 – Material Mistakes.

Commentary Arabic Grammar 4 – Preciseness in Arabic shows that the precision is imbedded in every derivate. Correctly translating any Arabic word requires knowing that.

A derivate verb may in addition to its form be in (a) active voice or passive voice, (b) in past tense, present tense or future tense, (c) of masculine gender or feminine gender, and (d) for 3rd, or 2nd or 1st person. For example from the root ك   ت   ب   following are the 14 words in the active voice and past tense.

Important things required to correctly translate any of the above words are as follows.

  1. The Fatha on top, Kasra under and Zomma above the last letter of words قُلۡتَ , قُلۡتِ and قُلۡتُ precisely show their different meanings.
  2. The text precisely shows how the same word قُلۡتُما means “You Two males” or “You two females.”
  3. The word قُلۡنَ means “All females in 3rd person said” and that precisely differs from the word قُلۡتُنَّ which means “All females in 2nd person said.”
  4. The last letter ا distinguishes قَالَا from قَا لَ and قُلۡنَاۤ from قُلۡنَ and their meanings.

لَيۡسَ عَلَيۡكَ هُدٰٮهُمۡ وَلٰـكِنَّ اللّٰهَ يَهۡدِىۡ مَنۡ يَّشَآءُ‌ ؕ وَمَا تُنۡفِقُوۡا مِنۡ خَيۡرٍ فَلِاَنۡفُسِكُمۡ‌ؕ وَمَا تُنۡفِقُوۡنَ اِلَّا ابۡتِغَآءَ وَجۡهِ اللّٰهِ‌ؕ وَمَا تُنۡفِقُوۡا مِنۡ خَيۡرٍ يُّوَفَّ اِلَيۡكُمۡ وَاَنۡـتُمۡ لَا تُظۡلَمُوۡنَ○‏

Lai-sa-alai-ka-ho-daa-hoom-wa-laa-kin-nul-laa-ha-yah-dee-mun-ya-shaa-o—wa-maa-toon-fe-quoo-min-khai-rin-fa-le-un-fo-se-koom—wa-maa-toon-fe-quoo-na-il-lub-te-ghaa-aa-wuj-hil-laa-ha—wa-maa-toon-fe-quoo-min-khai-rin-yo-wuf-fa-alai-koom-wa-un-toom-laa-tooz-la-moon

It is not on you to guide them, but Allah guides whom He chooses. And whatever of the good things you spend is for your own souls. And you never spend anything except seeking Allah’s attention.  And whatever of good things you spend will be fully returned to you.  And you won’t be wronged (= short-changed with diminished returns).

وَاِنۡ كَانَ ذُوۡ عُسۡرَةٍ فَنَظِرَةٌ اِلٰى مَيۡسَرَةٍ ‌ؕ وَاَنۡ تَصَدَّقُوۡا خَيۡرٌ لَّـكُمۡ‌ اِنۡ كُنۡتُمۡ تَعۡلَمُوۡنَ‏

 

Wa-in-kaa-na-zoo-oos-ra-tin-fa-na-zay-ra-toon-elaa-mai-sa-ra-tin                                    Wa-un-ta-sud-da-qoo-khai-roonl-la-koom-in-koon-toom-tau-la-moo-n

 

And if he has been on hard times, then grant a delay till the time of ease.             And that you remit as charity is better for you if you knew.

  • نَظِرَةٌ — Na-zay-ra-toon — Grant delay * (= Continuation, extension, postponement, reprieve, time or respite to repay the debt, loan or mortgage)

  • مَيۡسَرَةٍ — Mai-sa-ra-tin — Time of Ease   (= Ability to pay off debt; abundance; a lot; easy times to repay; easy circumstances; times of ease and plenty)

  • اَنۡ — Un — That (= Since. A/t/a ‘By way of’)
  • تَصَدَّقُوۡا — Ta-sud-da-qoo — Remit as charity (= v. pl., Forgive, give; omit, waive or write off as a charity, alms or alms-giving)

  • لّ — La — For (= For the benefit, object, purpose or reason; with intent to)
  • کُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person. You. The Holy Qor-aan states this way when addressing both men and women jointly)

  • تَعۡلَمُوۡنَ — Tau-la-moon — In the know of (= Aware; knowledgeable. A/t/a ‘Knew’ )

* Note 002:281. This verse lays down a Believer’s characteristic that has been translated

differently. ‘If your debtor be in straits, grant him a delay until he can discharge his debt’ [NJ Dawood]. ‘Remit [the debt] by way of charity [for the sake of God]’ [Allamah Nooruddin]. ‘If you are able, write off the debt as an act of charity’ [Ahmad Zidan].
