Prayer – Protection Against Bad Thoughts

Chapter # 114                                         Soora-toon-Naa-s                                       سُوۡرَةُ النَّاس

With the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful I begin
I seek the protection of God of the people
Master of the people
Worthy of worship by the people
From the evil of the whispers of the wicked
Who creates incitements in the hearts of the people
From among the Jinn and the people

The Holy Qor-aan                                             114:001                                  ○بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ‏‏
Bis-mil-laa-hir-rah-maa-nir-ra-heem                                                                                          With the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful I begin

وَلَمَّا جَآءَهُمۡ رَسُوۡلٌ مِّنۡ عِنۡدِ اللّٰهِ مُصَدِّقٌ لِّمَا مَعَهُمۡ نَبَذَ فَرِيۡقٌ مِّنَ الَّذِيۡنَ اُوۡتُوا الۡكِتٰبَۙ – کِتٰبَ اللّٰهِ وَرَآءَ ظُهُوۡرِهِمۡ كَاَنَّهُمۡ لَا يَعۡلَمُوۡنَ

 

Wa-lum-maa-jaa-aa-hoom-ra-soo-loom-min-in-dil-laa-hay
Mo-sud-day-qoon-lay-maa-ma-aa-hoom
Na-ba-za-fa-ree-qoon-may-nul-la-zee-na-oo-tool-kay-taa-ba
Kay-taa-bul-laa-hay-wa-raa-aa-za-hoo-ray-him
Ka-un-na-hoom-laa-yau-la-moo-n.

 

And whenever came to them a messenger from Allah
Fulfilling what was already with them,
A group among those given the Book discarded
The Book of Allah behind their backs
As if they did not know of it.

  • مِّنۡ — Min — From (= From the direction or presence)
  • عِنۡدَ — In-d…(il) — From / with (= From or with the presence, stock or will)
  • اللّٰهِ — Laa-hay — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)
  • مُصَدِّقٌ — Mo-sud-day-qoon — Fulfilling (= v., Affirming, approving, attesting, confirming, proving testifying, corroborating, testifying, verifying and witnessing the truth of the prophecies in the earlier scriptures 2. n., One who affirms, approves, attests or confirms; true testator truthful; verifier; witness)
  • لِّ — Lay — For (= For the benefit, purpose or reason; on account of. concerning. regarding. relative to)
  • مَآ — Maa — What (= All that; whatever. Refers to the earlier prophecies)
  • مَعَ — Ma-aa — Already with (=Along with; in the company of; goes with, following or after them.  Here the word refers to the prior Scriptures that the Israelites had)
  • هُمۡ‌ — Hoom  — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person.  They, the Prophets’ persecutors)
  • نَّبَذ — Na-ba-za — Discarded (= v., Broke; cast aside; cast away; denied; disclaimed; flouted; rebutted; rejected; renounced; repudiated; threw aside; turned back on; terminated; violated)
  • فَرِيۡقٌ — Fa-ree-qoon — A group (= Accomplices; association; a number of; band; class; clique; company; division; faction; part; party; section; selection; some only of a whole lot)
  • مِّنَ — May-na…(ul) — Among (= From the class, category, count, kind, persons or out of)
  • ٱلَّذِينَ — La-zee-na — Those who (= pl., m, 3rd person.  All those persons)
  • اُوۡتُوا — Oo-too…(l) — Were given (= Awarded; bestowed; conferred; entrusted; gifted; granted; made responsible for)
  • الۡكِتٰبَ — Kay-taa-ba — The Book (= 1. The Divine Directive of Commandments and Prohibitions. The Holy Scripture. The Testament that holds good and is operative eternally. The Decreed part of a religion. The Holy Direction of Divine Commands, Rules and Regulations. The Spiritual Code codifying the rules of universal application. 2. The Collection of mandated, ordered, prescribed, preserved, recorded or written do’s and don’t’s.  3. Authentic penned down material in black & white)
  • کِتٰبَ — Kay-taa-ba..(ul) — The Book (= See     الۡكِتٰبَ     above)
  • اللّٰهِ — Laa-hay — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship
  • وَرَآءَ — Wa-raa-aa — Behind (= At the back; far away; ignoring; shutting eyes to not see)
  • ظُهُوۡر — Za-hoo-ray — Backs (= pl., 1. Back of human beings where things can’t be seen, is beyond naked visibility and generally supposed to be neglected. 2. Manifest; obvious; visible)
  • هِمۡ — Him — Their (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Refers to those who persecuted the prophets from among the Recipients of the Book)
  • كَ — Ka — Like (= Example; identical; resembling; similar; similitude)
  • اَنَّ — Un-na — Definitely (= Absolutely; certainly; doubtlessly; earnestly; indeed; in all seriousness; positively; really; surely; truly; verily)
  • ھُمۡ‌ — Hoom — They (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person.  Refers to the aforesaid persons)
  • لَّا — Laa — No, not (= Absolute denial; never; not at all; total negation)
  • يَعۡلَمُوۡنَ — Yau-la-moo-n — Knew (= Knowingly; have the knowledge; are aware of it; know the consequence of their calumny and enormity)

* * Note 002:102. Except for the 5th word [ رَسُوۡلٌ in 002:102 and كِتٰبٌ  in 002:090] the first thirteen (13) words of the two verses are the same. These words had “affirmed, approved, attested, confirmed, corroborated, delivered, duplicated, supported, testified and verified with” identical messages the truth of both the Messenger [The Holy Prophet Mohammed s.a.w] and the Book [The Holy Qor-aan that was revealed to him].

اَوَکُلَّمَا عٰهَدُوۡا عَهۡدًا نَّبَذَهٗ فَرِيۡقٌ مِّنۡهُمۡ‌ؕ بَلۡ اَكۡثَرُهُمۡ لَا يُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ‏

.

Aa-wa-kool-la-maa-aa-ha-doo-ah-dun-na-ba-za-hoo                                                              Fa-ree-qoom-min-hoom                                                                                                                        Bul-uk-tha-ro-hoom-laa-yoe-may-noon.

 

And will it be that every time they made a covenant                                                     A group among them would discard it?                                                                               The fact is that most of them do not believe.

 

  • اَ — Aa — Will (= Question mark like Are, Can, Have, Shell or Will?)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • كُلَّمَا — Kool-la-maa — Every time (= This is a combination of two words. The first word كُلٌّ means ‘all, altogether, each and everyone, entirely, everyone, everything, totally, without exception or wholly’. The second word مَا means ‘all that, any time, at such time; when; whenever, what, whatever.’ Joined together كُلَّمَا means “every single time without any exception, as often as, as soon as; no sooner than.”
  • عٰهَدُوۡا — Aa-ha-doo — Made (= v., Affirmed; agreed; confirmed; entered; pledged; promised; ratified; verified)
  • عَهۡدًا — Ah-dun — Covenant (= n., Binding, firm, serious or solemn affirmation, assurance, contract, covenant, pledge, promise, ratification or undertaking)
  • نَّبَذ — Na-ba-za — Would discard (= v., Break; cast aside; cast away; deny; disclaim; flout; rebut; reject; renounce; repudiate; throw aside; turn back on; terminate; violate)

  • لَا — Laa — Not (= Absolute denial; never; no; not at all; total negation)
  • يُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ — Yoe-may-noon — Believe (= v. Believe in God.  Initial addressees were Israelites who received this direction.   Current translations are that this act is to believe in God, the Holy Qor-aan, Islaam and become Moslems by entering the Faith)

وَلَقَدۡ اَنۡزَلۡنَآ اِلَيۡكَ اٰيٰتٍۢ بَيِّنٰتٍ‌‌ۚ وَمَا يَكۡفُرُ بِهَآ اِلَّا الۡفٰسِقُوۡنَ

               Wa-la-qud-un-zul-naa-elai-ka-aa-yaa-tin-buy-yay-naa-tin-wa-maa-yuk-fo-ro-bay-haa-il -lul-faa-say-qoo-n.

               And most certainly We have revealed to you clear signs, and none denies it except the disobedient.

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally)
  • لَقَدۡ — La-qud — Most certainly (= Both لَ and قَدۡ create emphasis and mean similarly like absolutely, categorically, definitely, doubtlessly, truly, positively; surely; verily. Their translation ‘certainly certainly’ or ‘surely surely’ is not good English but ‘most certainly’ is. See our Commentary titled as ‘2 Words of Emphasis used together multiply the Effect‘)
  • اَنۡزَلۡ — Un-zul — Revealed (= v., Delivered; entrusted; inspired; handed down; sent down. Also, furnished; provided; released; supplied)
  • نَآ — Naa — (= pro., pl., 1st person. Us. Used with God’s name it is the authoritative way a higher-up talks to a subordinate)
  • اِلَيۡ — E-lai — To (= In the direction of; to; towards. 2. Above; on; upon)
  • كَ — Ka — You (= pro., s., m., 2nd person.  You.  The addressee of this divine message is initially the Holy Prophet s.a.w and secondarily every Moslem, in fact every human being.  See 002:005 and our Commentary The Most Read Book In The World)
  • اٰيٰتِ — Aa-yaa-tin — Signs (= n., pl. 1. Narratives; revelations; verses. 2. Commands; directions; laws; orders. 3. Corroborations; evidence; indications; lessons; manifestations; messages; pointers; portents; proofs; symbols; tokens. 4. Part, portion, proof or sign that point to the truth. 5. Every element to create clear crystal picture leading to an absolute conviction)
  • بَيِّنٰتٍ‌‌ — Buy-yay-naa-tin — Clear (= pl., Convincing; irrefutable; manifest; sure; veritable)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ above)
  • مَا — Maa — None (= Absolutely not; no; never)
  • يَكۡفُرُ — Yuck-fo-ro — Denies (= v., pl., Disbelieves; disputes; refuses; rejects. Is ingrate, thankless, ungrateful or unappreciative)
  • بِ — Bay — With  (= Literally this word means with.  ‘Denies with it’ is less commonly understood in English than ‘Denies it’)
  • هَا — Haa — It (= pro., s., f., 3rd person. Ref to the category of clear signs)
  • اِلَّا — Il-la..(ul) — Except (= Apart from; besides; excluding; save; unless)
  • الۡفٰسِقُوۡنَ — Faa-say-qoo-n — Disobedient (= Evil-doers; miscreant; perverse; rebellious; transgressors who forsake the proper path or right road leading to God

مَنۡ كَانَ عَدُوًّا لِّلّٰهِ وَمَلٰٓٮِٕکَتِهٖ وَ رُسُلِهٖ وَجِبۡرِيۡلَ وَمِيۡكٰٮلَ فَاِنَّ اللّٰهَ عَدُوٌّ لِّلۡكٰفِرِيۡنَ‏

              

Mun-kaa-na-aa-doo-won-lil-laa-hay-wa-ma-laa-eka-tay-he                                                    Wa-ro-so-lay-he-wa-jib-ree-la-wa-me-kaa-la                                                                                Fa-in-nul-la-ha-adoo-woon-lil-kaa-fay-ree-n.

Whoso is an enemy to Allah and His angels                                                                      And His messengers and Gabriel and Michael                                                                  Then Allah definitely is an enemy to the disbelievers.

قُلۡ مَنۡ كَانَ عَدُوًّا لِّجِبۡرِيۡلَ فَاِنَّهٗ نَزَّلَهٗ عَلٰى قَلۡبِكَ بِاِذۡنِ اللّٰهِ مُصَدِّقًا لِّمَا بَيۡنَ يَدَيۡهِ وَهُدًى وَّبُشۡرٰى لِلۡمُؤۡمِنِيۡنَ‏

 

Qool-mun-kaa-na-aa-doo-won-lay-jib-ree-la
Fa-in-na-hoo-nuz-za-la-hoo-alaa-qul-bay-ka
Bay-iz-nil-laa-hay-mo-sud-day-qun-lay-maa-bai-na-ya-dai-hay
Wa-ho-dun-wa-boosh-raa-lil-moe-me-nee-n.

 

Say, “Who has been an enemy to Gabriel?
After all he surely had revealed it on your heart
With the leave of Allah, an attester for what was before it
And as a guidance and good news for the believers.”

 

  • قُلۡ — Qool — Say (= Announce, ask; assert, broadcast, call, convey, declare; elaborate, explain, expound, inform, instruct, maintain, preach, proclaim, profess, propagate; specify, state or tell 1) others, 2) yourself, 3) your receiving and 4) your resolve to obey the Commandment. وَلَتَجِدَنَّهُمۡ اَحۡرَصَ النَّاسِ عَلٰى حَيٰوةٍ  ۛۚ وَ مِنَ الَّذِيۡنَ اَشۡرَكُوۡا‌‌ يَوَدُّ اَحَدُهُمۡ لَوۡ يُعَمَّرُ اَ لۡفَ سَنَةٍ ۚ وَمَا هُوَ بِمُزَحۡزِحِهٖ مِنَ الۡعَذَابِ اَنۡ يُّعَمَّرَ‌ؕ وَاللّٰهُ بَصِيۡرٌۢ بِمَا يَعۡمَلُوۡنَ

 

Wa-la-ta-jay-dun-na-hoom-ah-ra-sun-naa-say-alaa-ha-yaa-tin
Wa-may-nul-la-zee-na-ush-ra-koo-ya-wud-do-aa-ha-do-hoom
Lao-yo-um-ma-ro-ul-fa-sa-na-tin
Wa-maa-ho-wa-bay-mo-zuh-zay-he-may-nul-azaa-bay-un-yo-um-ma-ra
Wul-laa-ho-ba-see-roon-bay-maa-yau-la-moo-n.

 

And certainly you find them the greediest of people on life
And among those who are idolaters everyone of them loves
That he be given life of a thousand years.
And he won’t escape from the punishment because his life was extended.
And Allah sees real well what they do.

  • اَشۡرَكُوۡۤا — Ush-ra-koo — Idolaters ** (= Polytheists. Who ascribe associates and partners to God and worship deities besides Him. Who set up other gods with ‘the Almighty God Allah’ as equals. Pagans)
  • يَوَدُّ — Ya-wud-do — Loves (= Cherishes; craves; desires; likes; longs for; seeks enthusiastically; wants; wishes; willingly goes after)
  • اَحَدُ — Aa-ha-do — Everyone (= All; Each one; individual; single)
  • ھُمۡ‌ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. ‘Those not aspiring for death’)
  • لَوۡ — Lao — If / Wish that (= If the situation arises; in case; under the circumstances; would it be that)
  • يُعَمَّرُ — Yo-umma-ro — Be given life (= Allowed, extended, granted or spared for a long life span
  • اَ لۡفَ — Ulfa — Thousand (= Ten hundred)
  • سَنَةٍ — Sa-na-tin — Years (= Each period of 365 days, each day being the period from sunrise to the sunrise of the next day)

  • يُّعَمَّرَ — Yo-um-ma-ra — Was given life (= Allowed, extended, granted or spared for a long life span
  • وَ — Wa…(ul) — And (=وَ vaao is tantamount to taking oath; solemn declaration)

{The following four words with some changes are repeats
in 049:019, 002:111, 048:025, 060:004 and 064:003}

  • اللّٰهُ — Laa-ho — Allah *** (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)
  • بَصِيۡرٌ — Ba-see-roon — Seer (= superlative form indicates the greatest, the highest, the most. and highlights that none sees more than Him.  All-seeing. Looks after. Lookout. Mindful. Observer. Overseer. One who takes cognizance very well. Sees well. Top-seer. Watch. Watchful)
  • بِمَا — Bay-maa — Whatever (= Combination of two words. بِ means ‘with / in’ and مَاۤ means ‘all that, whatever, whatsoever or whenever.’ The combination بِمَا (bay-maa) means ‘with all that, whatever, whatsoever or whenever’)
  • يَعۡمَلُون — Yau-ma-loo-n — They do (= Act, commit, do, omit or perform deeds and misdeeds

 

* Note 002:097a.   Some translators narrowed down the scope of this verse by translating the word النَّاسِ (the people) as only those of the “Mankind … who do not believe in Resurrection – Majus, pagans and idolaters.”   Others by translating it as ‘all of the mankind’ left the original text’s indicated intent intact with a much larger and broader scope.

** Note 002:097b.   Different translations of وَ مِنَ الَّذِيۡنَ اَشۡرَكُوۡا‌ (= and among the idolaters) have joined this clause differently – to the statement that came immediately before it, OR to the statement that came immediately after it as the punctuation in the original text suggests, OR to both the statements that have come before it as well as after it.

The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                        002:096

 

وَ لَنۡ يَّتَمَنَّوۡهُ اَبَدًاۢ بِمَا قَدَّمَتۡ اَيۡدِيۡهِمۡ‌ؕ وَاللّٰهُ عَلِيۡمٌۢ بِالظّٰلِمِيۡنَ‏

 

Wa-lun-ya-ta-mun-nao-ho-aa-ba-dun                                                                                        Bay-maa-qud-da-mut-aiy-dee-him                                                                                              Wul-laa-ho-alee-moon-biz-zaa-lay-mee-n.

 

And they will not ever seek that death                                                                                Because of what their hands have forwarded.                                                                  And Allah knows the wrong-doers very well.

 

The verses 002:096 and 062:008 are repeats except some differences in 2nd & 3rd words

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • لَن — Lun…(ya) — Not (= Absolute denial; never; no; not at all; total negation. Instead of this word, the verse 062:008 has used the word لَا  (=laa) meaning the same)
  • يَّتَمَنَّو — Ya-ta-mun-nao — Seek (= Ask; crave; desire; invoke; long for; want; wish.  Instead of this word, the verse 062:008 has used the word يَتَمَنَّوۡنَ (= ya-ta-mun-nao-na) meaning the same)
  • هُ — Ho — That (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to ‘the death’ — narrowed down to meaning ONLY their ‘own death)
  • اَبَدًا — Aa-ba-dun(b) — Ever (= Abide; forever; live a long time)
  • بِمَا — Bay-maa — Because of (= Combination of two words. بِ means ‘with / in’ and مَاۤ means ‘all that, whatever, whatsoever or whenever.’ The combination بِمَا (bay-maa) means ‘due to’; on account of; for the reason; due to; with / in all that)
  • قَدَّمَتۡ — Qud-da-mut — Forwarded (= Done for themselves; sent ahead; sent before; sent on; stored ahead; wrought themselves by their own deeds, actions and sins which they
    have committed)
  • اَيۡدِيۡ — Aiy-dee — Hands (= The terminal part of the arm below the wrist. In Arabic
    the expression refers to things which are ahead, before, in front or in immediate presence. Their own hands)
  • هِمۡ — Him — Their (= pro., s., m., 3rd person.  Refers to ‘aforesaid wrongdoers’ )
  • وَ — Wa…(ul) — And (=وَ vaao is tantamount to taking oath; solemn declaration)
  • اللّٰهُ — Laa-ho — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)

  • الظّٰلِمِيۡنَ‏ — Zaa-lay-mee-n — Wrongdoers (= n., pl., Bad people.  Criminals.  Culprits.  Doers of harm, hurt or injury.  Evil-doers.  Polytheists. Transgressors. Those who commit, do, practice, repeat or habitually pursue the evil and cause grievous wrongs  to others.  Unfair. Unjust. Violators. Wicked

The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                   002:095

قُلۡ اِنۡ كَانَتۡ لَـکُمُ الدَّارُ الۡاٰخِرَةُ عِنۡدَ اللّٰهِ خَالِصَةً مِّنۡ دُوۡنِ النَّاسِ فَتَمَنَّوُا الۡمَوۡتَ اِنۡ کُنۡتُمۡ صٰدِقِيۡنَ‏

              Qool-in-kaa-nut-la-ko-mood-daa-rool-aa-khay-ra-to-in-dul-laa-hay-khaa-lay-sa-tun-min-doo-nin-naa-say-fa-ta-mun-na-wool-mao-ta-in-koon-toom-sua-day-qee-n.

             Say, “If there has been with Allah a home for you in the Hereafter exclusive of all other people, then wish for death if you are truthful.”

  • قُلۡ — Qool — Say (= Announce, assert, broadcast, call, convey, declare, elaborate, explain, expound, inform, instruct, maintain, preach, proclaim, profess, propagate, specify, state or tell 1) others, 2) yourself, 3) of your receiving it, and 4) your firm resolve to obey the Commandment.   See our Note 112:002 and our Commentary “‘You say’ means“)
  • اِنِ — In– If (= If situation arises; in case; under the circumstances)
  • كَانَتۡ — Kaa-nut — Has been * (= Conveys an act’s continuity from the past to the present and leading into the future)
  • لَ — La–  For (= For the benefit of. Here it refers to the ‘Home in the Hereafter that has been ‘adjudged, chosen, decided and reserved for’)
  • کُمُ — Ko…(mood) — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person.   You.   The Holy Qor-aan states this way when addressing both men and women jointly.   Here the reference is to the Israelites بَنِىۡٓ اِسۡرَآءِيۡلَ)
  • الدَّارُ — Daa-ro..(ol) — The Home (= Abode; dwelling; house; residence; last home; everlasting mansion)
  • الۡاٰخِرَةُ — Aa-khay-ra-to — The Hereafter (= Judgment Day. Resurrection. The end. The Ending.  Life yet to come)
  • عِنۡدَ — In-d…(ul) — With (= 1. Close at hand; near; with. 2. From the presence. In the counting, estimation, eyes, providence or sight of)
  • اللّٰهِ — Laa-hay — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)
  • خَالِصَةً — Khaa-lay-sa-tun — Exclusive (= Only, completely, entirely, fully, really, solely, totally, specially and wholly reserved; to the exclusion of)

{The last ten words in this verse are repeated in 062:007}

  • مِّنۡ — Min — From (= Among; from the class, category, count, kind or person)
  • دُوۡنِ  — Doo-n…(in) — Out of (= Apart from; besides; beyond; except; excluding; over; exclusive of; in preference to; other than; save; to the exclusion of the rest of)
  • النَّاسَ — Un-naa-say — The people (= Clans; factions; followers; folks; groups; human beings mankind; men; nations; tribes)
  • فَ — Fa — Then (= Consequently; as a result; so; thereafter; therefore; yet
    After all this; at the end of; in conclusion)
  • تَمَنَّوُا — Ta-mun-na-wo..(ol) — Wish (= Ask; choose; crave; desire; go for; invoke; long; seek; select; want; wish)
  • الۡمَوۡتَ — Mao-ta — Death ** (= The condition after life has ended. End of life on earth. Downfall. Extinction. Stupor. Also, as in instant case ‘in God’s cause’ or ‘as a way to please God’)
  • اِنۡ — In —  If (= If situation arises; in case; under the circumstances)
  • كُنۡ — Koon —  Have been (= Conveys continuity from the past and going into future)
  • تُمۡ — Toom — You (= pl., m. 2nd person.   You.   The Holy Qor-aan states this way when addressing both men and women jointly.   Here the reference is to the Israelites بَنِىۡٓ اِسۡرَآءِيۡلَ)
  • صٰدِقِيۡنَ — Sua-day-qee-n — Truthful (= 1. Truly sincere believers in God. Genuinely in Faith. 2. True and honest in your claims and assertions)

* Note 002:095a. The implication of this part of the verse is that if you —
 assert [boast, claim, profess or think]
 to be completely [entirely, fully, really, sincerely, totally, wholly and wholeheartedly]
 the most favored friend [beloved favorite and loyal follower of God]
 then you would crave [love, long, wish and want]
 to be with Him. But since even you yourselves do not inwardly believe in such claim, you do not aspire to meet the Almighty and that is why you fear death.

** Note 002:095b. Challenging the disbelievers to ‘ask for death’ has been interpreted in several ways including the following.

  • ‘Long for your death’ so as to be perpetually with Him Who loves you so dearly to have reserved permanent and ‘Everlasting Mansions’ for you.
  • Ask for the death of the Prophet s.a.w whom you consider your opponent.
  • Pray for ‘your enemy’s death’ who actually has harmed or hurt you.
  • Invoke death on whoever among us two adheres to falsehood and opposes the Truth.

لَاۤ اِكۡرَاهَ فِى الدِّيۡنِ‌ۙ قَد تَّبَيَّنَ الرُّشۡدُ مِنَ الۡغَىِّ‌ۚ فَمَنۡ يَّكۡفُرۡ بِالطَّاغُوۡتِ وَيُؤۡمِنۡۢ بِاللّٰهِ فَقَدِ اسۡتَمۡسَكَ

○ وَاللّٰهُ سَمِيۡعٌ عَلِيۡمٌ   بِالۡعُرۡوَةِ الۡوُثۡقٰى لَا انْفِصَامَ لَهَا‌‌

 

Laa-ik-raa-ha-fid-dee-nay                                                                                                                 Qud-ta-buy-yun-nur-roosh-do-may-nul-ghuy-yay                                                                   Fa-mun-yuk-foor-bit-taa-ghoo-tay-wa-yoe-min-bil-laa-hay                                                      Fa-qa-dis-tum-sa-ka-bil-oor-wa-til-woos-qaa                                                                             Lun-fay-saa-ma-la-haa                                                                                                                       Wul-laa-ho-sa-mee-oon-aa-leem.

 

No compulsion in religion.                                                                                                  Surely the right road has become distinct from the wrong road.                              So whoever rejects the evil and believes in Allah                                                       Has certainly held on to a very strong holding-strip                                                  No breaking is destined for it.                                                                                            And by God Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

 

  • لَاۤ — Laa — No (= Absolute denial; never; no; not at all; total negation. Most translations are ‘No compulsion is in religion’ but some have stated as ‘No compulsion will be in religion)
  • اِكۡرَاهَ — Ik-raa-ha — Compulsion (= n., 1. Dictation; obligation; pressure.  2. An enforced  command, decree; decision; direction; order; verdict. Note 002:218 highlights an important related issue. AR Omar put ‘of any sort’ in the translation although no corresponding word is in the original text)
  • فِى — Fi..(d) — In (= About; concerning; for the sake of; in reference, relative or pursuant to; regarding)
  • الدِّيۡنِ‌ — Id-de-nay — Religion (= n., Belief system. Divine Rules. Faith. See Commentary Islam – 106 – Religion Established Nation … )
  • قَدۡ  — Qud — Surely (= This word lays emphasis. Absolutely; categorically; assuredly; certainly; clearly; definitely; specially; doubtlessly; obviously; for sure; in spite of; positively; specifically; verily; with no doubt whatsoever)
  • تَّبَيَّنَ — Ta-buy-yun-na — Has become distinct (= v., pres., pass., s., f., 3rd person., Is or has become clarified, crystal clear, differentiated, distinguished, elaborated, explained, known, expounded or apparent, manifest, plain and obvious. Something that stands out like a sore thumb)
  • الرُّشۡدُ — Roosh-do — The right road (= Correct course; good and glorious guidance; proper path; true guidance; true trail; total truth; wise ways)
  • مِنَ — May…na…(ul) — From (= From the class, category, count, kind, person or out of)
  • الۡغَىّ — Ghuy-yay — The wrong road (= Crookedness; error.  Devious, false, misguided, improper, misleading, perversity and wrong direction, line, path, road, way or ways to live)
  • فَ — Fa — So (= After all this; in the end; in conclusion; in consequence; in the final analysis; then; thereafter; therefore; yet)
  • مَنۡ — Mun…(y) — Who (= Anyone, whatsoever, who, whoever, whosoever, whom, whomever or whoso)
  • يَّكۡفُرۡ — Yuk-foor — Rejects (= v., 1. Acts or behaves ungratefully or thanklessly.  2. Denies, refuses or rejects the truth or belief in Allah, the Holy Qor-aan and Islaam to become Moslem.  3. Denounces; disavows; disbelieves; discards; disowns; renounces. A/t/a refused to be led)
  • بِ — B…(it) — With (= This word in Arabic literally means with)
  • لطَّاغُوۡتِ –Taa-ghoo-tay — The Satan (= Bad or evil leaders or persons. Devils. Idols. idol-worshipers. A/t/a ‘Those who transgress’ , ‘False deities’ and ‘false leaders’ )
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • يُؤۡمِنۡ — Yoe-min — Believes (= v. Enters faith; follows the Holy Qor-aan, the Islaam and is a Moslem; takes side with Allah)
  • بِ — B…(il) — In (= This word in Arabic literally means ‘with’. The real sense in English if used with Allah is accurately conveyed with ‘in’)

  • انْفِصَامَ — Un-fay-saa-ma — Breaking (= n., Breakage; cracking; cutting; disconnecting; fissure; fracture; rupture; severance; shattering; snapping. The reference is to a thing that never breaks or gives way)
  • لَ — La — For (= Belonging to; in connection with; owned by; meant for; reserved for)
  • هَا — Haa — It (= pro., s., f., 3rd person., Refers to the earlier specified, shown or stated article, thing or person. In instant case the reference is to the ‘very strong holding-strip)
  • وَ — Wa…(ul) — And (= This vaao is tantamount to taking oath; solemn declaration)
  • اللّٰهُ — Laa-ho — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)
  • سَمِيۡعٌ — Sa-mee-oon — All-Hearing (= superlative form indicates the greatest, the highest, the most and highlights that none more than Him hears the best. All-Hearing. Most Hearing. The Hearer. Hears to the ultimate maximum. Hears all wholly, entirely, truly surely, totally and surely. The One from whom nothing is beyond, missed or out of His hearing)
  • عَلِيۡمٌ‏ — A-leem  — All-Knowing (= superlative form indicates the greatest, the highest, the most and highlights that none more than Him knows more and is knowledgeable. Informed to the maximum. Most Knowing. One with all, total, perfect and wholesome knowledge with nothing beyond or out of His sight. Well-Acquainted; Well-Aware)
