* Note 002:063a.   Commentators have described the Sabeans in numerous details.

  • A Yusuf Ali’s Notes #76 & 77 stated that they were called “Nasoraeans, or Mandaeans, or Christians of St John” claiming “to be Gnostics or Knowers of the Great Life.”
  • M Muhammad Ali in his Note # 103 described them as “Christians of St John the Baptist … a religion between Judaism and Christianity, based on the doctrine of Unity, but also maintaining worship of angles. Majority do not include them in the Ahl-al-kitab.”
  • Dr Khan in his Note to this verse wrote: “A past nation used to live in Musal (Iraq) … say La-ilaha-illallah (none has the right to be worshipped but Allah) … read Az-Zabur (The Psalm of the Sabians) and … were neither Jews nor Christians.”
  • Malik Ghulam Farid in his Note #104 wrote: “Sabi is one who forsakes his own religion for a new one. Technically… the word Sabians refers to certain religious sect found in parts of Arabia and countries bordering it. The name was applied to (1) star-worshipping people living in Mesopotamia (Gibbon’s Roman Empire, Muruj al-Dhahab & Enc. Rel. Eth. viii under Mandaeans; (2) a people who lived near Mosul in Iraq.”
  • It is reported that a man came to a mosque when the Holy Prophet s.a.w was also there. After his departure and on a question about him, he s.a.w said, “He was a Soofi.”

** Note 002:063b. Translating the word مَنۡ into ‘who’ would refer it to the four groups named earlier in the verse namely Moslems, Jews, Christians and Sabians.   But its translation as ‘whoever’ is far more accurate for following among other reasons.

  • It includes the three groups mentioned after the word مَنۡ in the verse.
  • It broadens the message by enlarging the pool of recipients of God’s grace.
  • It falsifies the notion which adherents of all religions commonly share — claims that only they will get the Salvation and go to the paradise and all others will go to hell.
  • It emphasizes its message by repeating the word هُمۡ five times and highlighting that all of them who act in the named manner will get rewarded in the promised way.

*** Note 002:063c. The essence of verse 002:063 is repeated in 005:070 and 022:018 and restated in different words in the verses  002:113. See our Commentary titled as as Superiority of one Religion over all others.

Religions, Are Jews and Moslems alike – 002:046 ?

RELIGIONS

Are Jews and Moslems alike? 002:046

The verse 002:046 shows that Command اسۡتَعِيۡنُوۡا بِالصَّبۡرِ وَالصَّلٰوةِ (Seek God’s help with perseverance and prayer) was mandated for the Children of Israel.   Later exactly those words came down for Moslems (002:154). Obligating Moslems to five daily prayers can be inferred from 002:154, but not as some translators have extrapolated from 002:046 as it is a part of an historical account that started by addressing the Children of Israel (002:041 to 002:097).   Some of those 56 verses did tell Moslems to avoid specified malpractices by earlier nations but primarily they are addressed to the Children of Israel by reminding them of the Covenant [partly given in 002:084] and other facts as summarized below.

Prayers of universal application initially taught to the Children of Israel

  • God’s forgiveness because He accepts repentance – 002:055
  • God’s forgiveness on entering places submissively and seeking forgiveness – 002:059
  • God’s reward for believing in Him and doing good deeds – 002:063
  • God’s protection against being ignorant – 002:068
  • God’s guidance by saying “God-willing” – 002:071
  • God’s giving life to the dead – 002:074

Good tides for the Children of Israel

  • Preference given to them over all others in the Universe – 002:048
  • Parting of the sea to save them from the Pharaoh’s army – 002:051
  • Forgiving them despite the taking calf for God – 002:054, 002:055
  • Revival after their stupor, a real near-death experience – 002:057
  • Manna / Salwa specially sent down for them as food – 002:058
  • Guiding them to enter towns with plenteous foods – 002:059
  • Sprouting springs of water for all 12 of their tribes – 002:061
  • Granting their requests for foods that earth grows – 002:062
  • Grace of God to save them from becoming losers – 002:065

Bad times for the Children of Israel

  • Transgression regarding their Sabbath – 002:066
  • Their developing into a hard-hearted nation – 002:075
  • Slaying of their sons and sparing their women – 002:050
  • Worshiping a calf made of their golden jewelry – 002:052
  • Struck by lightning as they demanded to see God – 002:056
  • Punishment for their twisting the words of prayers – 002:060
  • Their flouting God’s signs and persecuting prophets – 002:062
  • Killing their own brethren contrary to their Covenant – 002:086
  • Raising issues in the command to sacrifice a heifer – 002:068/ 072
  • Their writing down materials they tried selling as Scriptures – 002:080

Other honorable mentions relating to the Children of Israel

  • 9 times glorified their prophet Moses in 002-052, 054, 055, 056, 061, 062, 068, 088, 093
  • 2 times referred to their book (Torah) given near the Mount, in 002:064 and 002:094
  • 3 times addressed the Children of Israel by name in 002:041, 002:048 and 002:084
  • 5 times talked of their Covenant in 002:041, 002:064, 002:084, 002:085 and 002:094

So it is logical to conclude that the Commandment to “Seek help with prayer and perseverance” was for the Jews, and later with a refinement of “five daily prayers” for the Moslems as well.   Could “Seeking God’s help with prayer and perseverance” be a reason why Jewish communities flourished fantastically in medieval Moslem empires – unlike what they suffered under Russian Czars and Adolf Hitler?   Could that methodology be the sole reason of their regaining economic power and medical superiority repeatedly in their history?   Could Moslems have been warned that with this strategy they too could be blessed like the precedent of their Jewish brethren, but if they repeated the earlier wrongs paying no attention to the history then the history would repeat itself?

And when Moses said to his people,
“Listen, my people, you surely had wronged yourselves
With your taking the calf as God.
So you all turn to your Creator repenting for forgiveness.
Then suppress yourselves in evil tendencies.

Then He turned to you in compassion.

* Note 002:055. The extrapolations of the four-worded phrase   فَاقۡتُلُوۡٓا اَنۡفُسَكُم   (in 002:055) range widely.   What did the Command mean?   Was it a direction to physically kill others?   Was it a directive to psychologically suppress evil tendencies?   Is it a killing and slaying, or an execution in punishment (002:073), or suppressing with will power?   What really was meant?

One extreme stated “kill your ring-leaders”, “slay the culprits and evil-doers among you” and “the innocent among you kill the wrongdoers among you” by just naming them as such.

The other extreme said “kill your passion”, “kill your evil desires” and “Let each one of you slay the evil propensities of his mind.”   Maulana Muhammad Ali [Note 86, 1st Ed in 1917] wrote “According to the Bible, the children of Levis were commanded to slay the others, and three thousand were killed on that day … (but) … The context does not allow this interpretation.”   Malik Ghulam Farid [Note 95 in 1969 Ed) wrote:  “The Israelites were commanded to purge their souls of evil desires through mortification. The biblical statement that they were commanded ‘to slay every man his brother, every man his companion and every man his neighbour [Exod 32:27] is not supported by the Quran.”   The Holy Qor-aan has clearly stated that calf-worshipers were pardoned (004:154) and … their leader Samiri was not killed (020:098) but punished differently for he went around saying “Don’t touch me” which could have been due to his excommunication with a social boycott or his contracting some physical or mental disease.

Studying Islam is a serious matter; it must not be taken lightly; see Commentary The Holy Qor-aan is no joke.   Help is available on this site in its word-by-word translations and Commentaries.   Notes to verses 002:055, 002:073 and 002:191 help on the subject in hand.   Soon other helpful posts will be put on this site like the ‘Arabic Grammar – 103 Questions Answered.’
