The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                                 007:139

 

وَجَاوَزۡنَا بِبَنِىۡۤ اِسۡرَاۤءِيۡلَ الۡبَحۡرَ فَاَ تَوۡا عَلٰى قَوۡمٍ يَّعۡكُفُوۡنَ عَلٰٓى اَصۡنَامٍ لَّهُمۡ‌ ۚ قَالُوۡا يٰمُوۡسَى اجۡعَلْ لَّـنَاۤ اِلٰهًا كَمَا لَهُمۡ اٰلِهَةٌ‌  ؕ قَالَ اِنَّكُمۡ قَوۡمٌ تَجۡهَلُوۡنَ

 

Wa  jaa-wauz-naa  bay  bani  iss-ra-ee-la  ul-bauh-ra
Fa  aa-tao  aa-laa  qao-min  yau-ko-foo-na
Aa-laa  aus-naa-min  la  hoom

Qaa-loo  yaa  moo-saa  auj-aul  la  naa
Aiy-laa-haun  ka-maa  la  hoom  aa-lay-ha-toon
Qaa-la  in-na  koom  qao-moon  yauj-ha-loo-n

 

And We parted the ocean with the Israelites.
Then they came upon a people devoting
To the statutes they had for them.   

They said, “O Moses! Make for us
A god just like gods they have.”
He said, “You surely are ignorant people.”

 

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., Links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; moreover; though; when; whereupon; while; yet)
  • جَاوَزۡنَا — Jaa-wauz-naa — We parted (= v., past., pl., 1st person. Divided. Opened. Parted. Passed or went across Separated. Split. Waded. The past tense verb for single 3rd person is now that of plural 1st person as explained in Note 001:007. A/t/a, ‘We brought … across,’ ‘We brought across,’ ‘We brought … (with safety) across,’ ‘We took … (with safety) across,’ ‘We took … across,’ ‘We led … across’ and ‘We crossed … through’)
  • بِ — Bay — With (= The best translation of the word بِ is with)
  • بَنِىۡٓ — Ba-nee –All children (= n., Sons; off-springs; progeny; future generations. Also, followers; nation; tribes)
  • اِسۡرَآءِيۡلَ — Is-raa-ee-la … (ul) — Israel (= The vowel ‘mudd’ refers to the Israelites, i.e., All tribes or descendants of the 12 sons of Prophet Jacob)
  • الۡبَحۡرَ — Aul-bauh-ra  — The sea (= n., s., Big body of water; big lakes like the Sea of Aral;   lake; ocean; river; sea; stream; shallow beach subject to rise and fall of ocean-water with waxing and waning like the Red Sea and Mediterranean where there is Suez canal. A/t/a, ‘the sea’)
  • فَ  —  Fa — So / Then (= After all this; as a result; at the end; but; consequently; hence; in conclusion; so; then; thereafter; therefore; thus; yet. See 002:027. A/t/a, ‘Then’ and ‘And’)
  • اَ تَوۡا — Aa-tao — They came (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Arrived. Came. Entered. Landed. Made.  Reached. A/t/a, ‘they came)
  • عَلٰى — Aa-laa — Upon (= Above; against; before; during; for; on; on top of; over; to; upon. A/t/a, ‘unto’)
  • قَوۡمٍ — Qao-min … (ya) — A people (= n., s., Addressees; attendees; fellows; followers; folks; nation; party; people; tribe)
  • يَّعۡكُفُوۡنَ — Yau-ko-foo-na — Devote (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. Attach themselves. Bow down. Dedicate. Devote. Express allegiance. Worship. A/t/a, ‘cleaving.’ But the past tense in ‘devoted,’ ‘devoted entirely,’ ‘devoted to … (in worship),’ ‘were assiduous in the worship),’ ‘were given up,’ ‘clung’ and ‘zealously devoted’ did not translate the present tense in the Holy Qor-aan text. See 002:188 and Note 002:188c)
  • عَلٰى — Aa-laa — To (= Above; against; before; on; on top of. See عَلٰى above. A/t/a, ‘to’)
  • اَصۡنَامٍ — Aus-naa-min … (la) — Statutes (= n., pl., Dolls; idols; Physically man-made deities. See Note 006:075. A/t/a, ‘idols,’ ‘some idols,’ ‘some idols… (for worship),’ ‘some of their idols’ and ‘some of their idols (in worship)’
  • لَّ — La — For (= For the benefit, object, person, purpose or reason of; intended for;          meant for. A/t/a, ‘had’)
  • هُمۡ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. They. A/t/a, ‘their’)
  • قَا لُوۡا — Qaa-loo — They said (= v., past, pl., m., 3rdperson: All those men announced,       called, declared or told. See Note 002:012)
  • يٰۤ — Yaa — Listen (= Be attentive; hearken; pay attention; O!)
  • مُوۡسٰى — Moo-saa — Moses (= The name of a Messenger / Prophet of Allah. A/t/a, ‘Musa (Moses)’
  • اجۡعَلْ — Auj-aul — You Make (= v., pres., s., 2nd person. Appoint; bring out; create; direct; grant; make; place; render, set; turn up. See Note 002:031. A/t/a, ‘fashion’)
  • لَ — La — For (= For the benefit, object, person, etc. See  لَ  above)
  • نَآ — Naa — Us (= pro., pl., 1st person. Our. Us. We)
  • اِلٰهًا — Aiy-laa-haun — A god (= n., s. Anything set up as a deity or alleged as GOD. Any  idol, man-made object or statute treated as an Equal to Partner in the worship of The Only One, God Almighty. A/t/a, ‘a god’ and ‘ilah’ (a god)’ 
  • كَمَا — Ka-maa — Just like (= Combination of two words; the first  كَ  (ka) means like, identical, resembling or similar; the second  مَاۤ  (maa)  means all that, what, whatever or whatsoever. Jointly the words mean like that, just like, just the way. or in the same fashion, line, manner, method, style or way. A/t/a, ‘as,’ ‘like,’ ‘like unto,’ ‘just as’ and ‘even as’)
  • لَ — La — For (= For the benefit, object, person, etc. See  لَ  above)
  • هُمۡ — Hoom — They have (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. They; them; those; theirs. A/t/a, ‘their’)
  • اٰلِهَةً — Aa-lay-ha-taun –Many gods (= n., pl., Deities. Idols. See  اِلٰهًا  above. A/t/a, ‘gods’ and ‘alihah (gods)
  • قَا لَ — Qaa-la — He said (= v., past., s., m., 3rd person. That One announced,  called,  declared or told. See Note 002:012. A/t/a, ‘He rebuked,’ ‘He (Moses) said’ and ’Moses replied’)
  • اِنَّ — In-na — Certainly (= Absolutely; assuredly; clearly; definitely; indeed; positively; surely; verily. See Note 002:128. A/t/a, ‘Lo’)
  • كُمۡ  — Koom — You (= pro., n. You; your; yours. A/t/a, ‘ye’)
  • قَوۡمٌ — Qao-moo-n —  People (= n., s., Addressees. See  قَوۡمٍ   above. A/t/a, ‘people’ and ‘a folk’)
  • تَجۡهَلُوۡنَ — Tauj-ha-loo-n — Are ignorant (= v., pres. pl., 2nd person. Clueless. Foolish. Ignorant. Lacking knowledge. Stupid. Unaware. Uneducated. Unlettered. Unschooled. Unsophisticated. A/t/a, ‘Without knowledge, ‘who know not,’ ‘a foolish … who act through lack of knowledge’ and ‘who know not (the Majesty and Greatness of Allah and what is obligatory upon you, i.e. to worship none but Allah Alone, the One and the Only God of all that exists)’
