Alif. Laam. Meem. Soaad. 

I’m Allah. I know all, the best, the Truth. I’m beyond any need.

 

  • ا — Alif — Abbreviation (one of the Haroof-e-Mo-qut-ta-aat) for the word Allah
  • لٓ — Laam-meem — Abbreviation (one of the Haroof-e-Mo-qut-ta-aat) for the word  Alum that means “I know all”.
  • مّ — Meem — Abbreviation (one of the Haroof-e-Mo-qut-ta-aat) for the word Au-lum that means “I Know the best”
  • صۤ — So-aad — Abbreviation (one of the Haroof-e-Mo-qut-ta-aat) for the word           Us-Samud that means “Allah is far beyond any need”

Soor-ra-tool Ul-au-raaf                             Chapter # 007                                       سُوۡرَةُ الاٴعرَاف

 

Verses of the Holy Qor-aan are quoted on this site with the numbers, the first set of three being the number of Soorah (Chapter) followed by the last set of three being the number of the verse. The numbers include  بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ‏‏   as the verse #1 in every Soorah except the Soorah #9. The original Arabic word is shown first, or in Col #1. The phonetic transliteration in English is shown next, or in Col #2, and is based upon words commonly pronounced like bat, cat, sat → fate, gate, hate → bait, trait → bay, nay, say → be, he, she → bet, pet, wet → bit, fit, sit → cot, dot, rot → boot, hoot, root → bout, rout → but, cut, hut, ultimatum.             Bis-mil  laa-hir  rah-maa-nir  ra-hee-m

With the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful I begin.

  • بِ — Bay … (is) — With (= The best translation of the word  بِ  is ‘with’)
  • سۡمِ — Ism … (il) — The name of (= The way to be addressed or called)
  • اللهِ — Laa-hay … (ir) — Allah (= The Almighty God; the One Only worthy of worship)
  • الرَّحۡمٰنِ — Rah-maa-n … (ir) — The Most Beneficent (= adj., Compassionate. Gracious. None more than Him benefits. As n: The One Who fully, totally and wholly benefits all, to the maximum without any condition, limitation or restriction. The Greatest and  Highest Benefactor Who wills goodness and mercy to all His creation)
  • الرَّحِيۡمِ — Ra-heem   The Most Merciful (= adj., superlative form indicates the Greatest Merciful. Merciful Forever. The word floodlights that none more than Him shows kindness and mercy, again and again continually, incessantly and indefinitely like perpetually incoming ocean waves)

هَلۡ يَنۡظُرُوۡنَ اِلَّاۤ اَنۡ تَاۡتِيَهُمُ الۡمَلٰۤٮِٕكَةُ اَوۡ يَاۡتِىَ رَبُّكَ اَوۡ يَاۡتِىَ بَعۡضُ اٰيٰتِ رَبِّكَ ؕ يَوۡمَ يَاۡتِىۡ بَعۡضُ اٰيٰتِ رَبِّكَ لَا يَنۡفَعُ نَفۡسًا اِيۡمَانُهَا لَمۡ تَكُنۡ اٰمَنَتۡ مِنۡ قَبۡلُ اَوۡ كَسَبَتۡ فِىۡۤ اِيۡمَانِهَا خَيـۡرًا‌ ؕ قُلِ انْتَظِرُوۡۤا اِنَّا مُنۡتَظِرُوۡنَ‏

 

Haul  yaun-zo-roo-na  il-laa  aun  tau-tay-ya  ho-mo  ol-ma-laa-aiy-ka-to                            Auo  yau-tay-ya  raub-bo  ka                                                                                                                Auo  yau-tay-ya  bau-dzo  aa-yaa-tay  raub-bay  ka

Yao-ma  yau-tee  bau-dzo  aa-yaa-tay  raub-bay  ka                                                                    Laa  yaun-fa-o  nauf-saun  ee-maa-no  haa                                                                                    Laum  ta-koon  aa-ma-naut  min  qaub-lo                                                                                        Auo  ka-sa-baut  fee  ee-maa-nay  haa  khai-raun                                                                          Qo-lay  in-ta-zay-roo  in-naa  moon-ta-zay-roo-n

 

Are they lookin for anything but that the angels come to them,                                Or your GOD comes                                                                                                                  Or some signs of your GOD come?

The day some signs of your GOD come                                                                                No soul benefits from its belief                                                                                  That had not believed since before                                                                                        Or had earned any good in its belief.                                                                                Say, “You keep looking. We are also looking.”

It is like creating an impression of considering, contemplating, reflecting, realizing, thinking or taking notice. See Note 002:163.   • تَاۡتِيَ — Tau-tay-ya — She Comes (= v., pres., s., f/g., 3rd person. In Arabic the ‘group of angels’ are referred to as of feminine gender. So, for anyone other than GOD, the word means: Arrive; bring; come with; deliver; fetch; produce; provide. اَوۡ تَقُوۡلُوۡا لَوۡ اَنَّاۤ اُنۡزِلَ عَلَيۡنَا الۡـكِتٰبُ لَـكُنَّاۤ اَهۡدٰى مِنۡهُمۡ‌ ۚ فَقَدۡ جَآءَكُمۡ بَيِّنَةٌ مِّنۡ رَّبِّكُمۡ وَهُدًى وَرَحۡمَةٌ‌  ۚ فَمَنۡ اَظۡلَمُ مِمَّنۡ كَذَّبَ بِاٰيٰتِ اللّٰهِ وَصَدَفَ عَنۡهَا‌ ؕ سَنَجۡزِى الَّذِيۡنَ يَصۡدِفُوۡنَ عَنۡ اٰيٰتِنَا سُوۡٓءَ الۡعَذَابِ بِمَا كَانُوۡا يَصۡدِفُوۡنَ

 

Auo  ta-qoo-loo  lao  un-naa  oon-zay-la  alai  naa  ul-kay-taa-ba                                              La  koon-naa  ah-daa  min  hoom                                                                                                    Fa  qaud  jaa-aa  koom  buy-yay-na-toon                                                                                      Min  rub-bay  koom  wa  ho-dun  wa  rah-mah

Fa  mun  uz-la-mo  mim-mun  kuz-za-ba  bay                                                                              Aaa-yaa-tay  il-aa-hay  wa  sa-da-fa  un  haa                                                                                Sa  nauj-zay  il-la-zee-na  yaus-day-foo-na                                                                                      Un  aa-yaa-tay  naa  soo  ul-azaa-bay                                                                                          Bay  maa  kaa-noo  yaus-day-foo-n

 

Or you say, “If the Book surely was sent upon us,                                                       We would have been more guided than them.”                                                              So, a clear sign has surely come to you                                                                              From your GOD and Guidance and Mercy.

Then who is more wrongful than he who belied                                                          The signs of Allah and turned away from it.                                                                    Soon we will recompense those who turn away                                                        From Our Signs the worst form of punishment                                                          Because of what they have been turning away.

The 1st word is كُنۡ (koon) that is a verb in the past tense and means used to, have or had been since the past, and is continuing from the past to the present and leads into the future, like ‘continued doing’ or ‘went on doing’. The 2nd word is  نَآ  (naa) meaning we, us or ours. The combination means We would have become, been, shaped, shown, taken or turned into. See Note 006:158. The Holy Qor-aan in verse 006:158 described wrongdoers’ action with the word  يَصۡدِفُوۡنَ  which is a verb in the present tense, but translators translated it as follows.

  1. N J Dawod translated this verb in the present tense as a future prediction, i.e., they ‘will be sternly punished for their indifference.’
  2. M Muhammad Ali and M Ghulam Farid translated this verb in the present tense as if it were in the past tense, i.e., as ‘they turned away’
  3. Marmaduke Picktham translated this verb in the present tense as a noun, i.e., ‘their aversion.’
  4. M Zafrulla Khan translated this word as ‘their turning aside’ and M Sher Ali, Dr Ahmad Zidan and Muhsin Khan ‘their turning away.’

In short, the above works are no translations of the original text of the Holy Qor-aan.

اَنۡ تَقُوۡلُـوۡۤا اِنَّمَاۤ اُنۡزِلَ الۡـكِتٰبُ عَلٰى طَآٮِٕفَتَيۡنِ مِنۡ قَبۡلِنَا وَاِنۡ كُنَّا عَنۡ دِرَاسَتِهِمۡ لَغٰفِلِيۡنَۙ

‏

Un  ta-qoo-loo  in-na-maa  oon-zay-la  ul-kay-taa-bo                                                                    Alaa  taa-aiy-fa-tai-nay  min  qub-lay  naa                                                                                Wa  in  koon  naa  un  day-raa-sa-tay  him  la  ghaa-fay-lee-n

 

What if you say that the Book was most certainly revealed                                          Upon two groups before us                                                                                                    And we have been definitely unaware of their studies.

وَهٰذَا كِتٰبٌ اَنۡزَلۡنٰهُ مُبٰرَكٌ فَاتَّبِعُوۡهُ وَاتَّقُوۡا لَعَلَّكُمۡ تُرۡحَمُوۡنَۙ‏

 

Wa  haa-zaa  kay-taa-boon  un-zul  naa  ho  mo-ba-ra-koon                                                      Fa  ut-ta-bay-oo  ho  wa  ut-ta-qoo  la-ul-la  koom  toor-ha-moo-n

 

And this Book We have sent it down is blessed.                                                              So follow it and do your duty so that you are shown mercy.

ثُمَّ اٰتَيۡنَا مُوۡسَى الۡـكِتٰبَ تَمَامًا عَلَى الَّذِىۡۤ اَحۡسَنَ وَتَفۡصِيۡلاً لِّـكُلِّ شَىۡءٍ وَّهُدًى وَرَحۡمَةً لَّعَلَّهُمۡ بِلِقَآءِ رَبِّهِمۡ يُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ

 

Thoom-ma  aa-tai  naa  moo-saa  ul-kay-taa-ba                                                                          Ta-maa-mun  aa-lul  la-zee  ah-sa-na                                                                                                Wa  tuf-ee-lun  lay  kool-lay  sha-in                                                                                                Wa  ho-dun  wa  rah-ma-ton                                                                                                            La-ul-la  hoom bay  lay-qaa-aiy  rub-bay  hoom  yoe-may-noo-n

 

Then We gave Moses the Book,                                                                                              As a finished product by Him Who beautified it,                                                              And as an explanation for everything,                                                                            And Guidance and Mercy,                                                                                                          So that they (his followers) may believe in meeting their GOD.

وَاَنَّ هٰذَا صِرَاطِىۡ مُسۡتَقِيۡمًا فَاتَّبِعُوۡهُ‌ ۚ وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوۡا السُّبُلَ فَتَفَرَّقَ بِكُمۡ عَنۡ سَبِيۡلِهٖ‌ ؕ ذٰ لِكُمۡ وَصّٰٮكُمۡ بِهٖ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَتَّقُوۡنَ

 

Wa  in-na   haa-zaa   say-raa-t  ee  fa  ut-ta-bay-oo  ho
Wa  laa  tut-ta-bay-oo  so-bo-lo
Fa  ta-fur-ra-qa  bay  koom  un  sa-bee-lay  he
Zaa-lay-koom waus-saa koom bay he
La  ul-la  koom  tut-ta-qoo-n

 

This surely is the right road to Me. Therefore, follow it.
And do not follow other roads
For they drive you off from His road.
All this is with which Allah admonish you
So that you may be pious.

  • تَتَّقُوۡنَ — Tut–ta-qoo-n — You be pious (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. ‘avoid angering Allah’, ‘act piously and righteously’, ‘become God-fearing, and righteous,’ ‘clean inner self’, ‘do duty to God’, ‘guard against or ward off evil.’ See Commentary The Righteous. A/t/a, ‘keep your duty,’ ’safeguard yourself,’ ‘able to guard against evils,’ ‘guard against evil,’ ‘guard yourself against evil,’ ‘ward off (evil),’ ‘be godfearing’ and ‘become Al-Mutaqun (the pious)

 

Note 096:154. This Note is like 006:153. The word وَصّٰى is in the past tense and shows that the Almighty God has already done this Act. The word  تَتَّقُوۡنَ  is in the present tense and shows that the Almighty God has established this for the human beings as a Rule of Universal Application that will come into play again and again, for all times to come. Prior act in the past tense and the lasting rule in the present tense have used the highest form of accuracy in this Divine Rule. Any translation that fails to convey this exact accuracy is a mistranslation, to say the least.

وَلَا تَقۡرَبُوۡا مَالَ الۡيَتِيۡمِ اِلَّا بِالَّتِىۡ هِىَ اَحۡسَنُ حَتّٰى يَبۡلُغَ اَشُدَّهٗ‌ ۚ وَاَوۡفُوۡا الۡكَيۡلَ وَالۡمِيۡزَانَ بِالۡقِسۡطِ‌ ۚ لَا نُـكَلِّفُ نَفۡسًا اِلَّا وُسۡعَهَا‌ ۚ وَاِذَا قُلۡتُمۡ فَاعۡدِلُوۡا وَلَوۡ كَانَ ذَا قُرۡبٰى‌‌ ۚ وَبِعَهۡدِ اللّٰهِ اَوۡفُوۡا‌ ؕ ذٰ لِكُمۡ وَصّٰٮكُمۡ بِهٖ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَذَكَّرُوۡنَ ۙ 

 

Wa  laa  tauq-ra-boo  maa-la  ul-ya-te-may                                                                                    Il-laa  bil-la-te  hay-ya  ah-sa no                                                                                                          Hut-ta  yaub-lo-gha  aa-shood-da  hoo                                                                                        Wa  auo-foo  l-kai-la  wa  ul-me-zaa-na  bay  il-qis-tay                                                                Laa  no-kul-lay-fo  nuf-sun  il-la  woos-aa-haa

Wa  ezaa  qool  toom  fa  au-day-loo                                                                                                  Wa  lao  ka-na  zaa  qor-baa                                                                                                                  Wa  bay  ah-day  il-laa  hay  auo foo                                                                                                  Zaa-lay-koom  wus-saa  koom  bay  he                                                                                            La-ul-la  koom  ta-zuk-ka-roo-n

 

And do not come near an orphan’s property                                                                  Except with that is better in end                                                                                            Until he reaches his strength.                                                                                               And fulfil the measuring and the weighing with fairness.                                            We do not inconvenience any soul beyond its capacity.

And be just when you speak                                                                                              And even if it has been against close relations.                                                          And fulfil the promise with Allah.                                                                                          All this is with which Allah has admonished you                                                              So that you may remember.

The Rule in verse 002:187 in seven (7) words is repeated in verse 006:153 in six (6) words

قُلۡ تَعَالَوۡا اَتۡلُ مَا حَرَّمَ رَبُّكُمۡ عَلَيۡكُمۡ‌ اَلَّا تُشۡرِكُوۡا بِهٖ شَيۡـًٔـــا وَّبِالۡوَالِدَيۡنِ اِحۡسَانًا‌ ۚ وَلَا تَقۡتُلُوۡۤا اَوۡلَادَكُمۡ مِّنۡ اِمۡلَاقٍ‌ؕ نَحۡنُ نَرۡزُقُكُمۡ وَاِيَّاهُمۡ‌ ۚ وَلَا تَقۡرَبُوا الۡفَوَاحِشَ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنۡهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ‌ ۚ وَلَا تَقۡتُلُوا النَّفۡسَ الَّتِىۡ حَرَّمَ اللّٰهُ اِلَّا بِالۡحَـقِّ‌ ؕ ذٰ لِكُمۡ وَصّٰٮكُمۡ بِهٖ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَعۡقِلُوۡنَ‏

 

Qool  ta-aa-lao  ut-lo  maa  hur-ra-ma  rub-bo  koom                                                            Alai  koom  ul-laa  toosh-ray-koo  bay  he  shai-un                                                                        Wa  bay  il-waa-lay-dai-nay  eh-saa-naa                                                                                          Wa  laa  tuq-to-loo  auo-laa-do  koom  min  im-laaq                                                                      Nah-no  nur-zo-qo  koom  wa  iyyaa  hoom.

Wa  laa  tuq-ra-boo  ol-fa-waa-hay-sha                                                                                      Maa  za-ha-ra  min  haa  wa  maa  ba-ta-na

Wa  laa  tuq-to-loo  un-nuf-sa  ul-la-ti                                                                                            Hur-ra-ma  ul-la-ho  il-laa  bay  il-huq

Zaa-lay-koom  wa-uss-sa  koom  bay  he                                                                                        La-ul-la  koom  tau-qay-loo-n

 

Say, “Come. I’ll tell what your Lord has prohibited                                                   For you is that you do not associate with Him anything                                                And with parents be kind.                                                                                                   And do not kill your children for fear of poverty.                                                        We provide for you and them too.

And do not even get near the indecencies                                                                        Whether from it are exposed in openness or hidden in secrecy.

And do not kill a person which                                                                                                Allah has forbidden except with justification.  

With this He has admonished you                                                                                        So that you may act wisely.

  • هَا — Haa — It (= pro., s., f., 3rd person., Refers to aforesaid group)
  • وَ  — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See  وَ   above)
  • مَاۤ —  Maa — All that (= What; whatever. See  مَاۤ  above)
  • بَطَنَ — Ba-ta-na —  Was hidden (= The same one word is for (1) v., past., s., 3rd person that means he kept secret by concealing in stomach, or  Was hidden (2) v., past., pass., s., 3rd person that means something was kept secret by concealing in stomach. Both words imply secrecy as if kept in belly or stomach)

  • وَ  — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See  وَ   above)
  • لَا — Laa — Not (= Naught; neither; never; none; nor. See لَا  above)
  • تَقۡتُلُوا — Tuq-to-loo … (n) — You kill (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Destroy; slay; See تَقۡتُلُوۡۤا above)
  • النَّفۡسَ — Nuf-sa — Person (= n., s., Person; soul. A/t/a, ‘the life’ and ‘anyone’)
  • ٱلَّتِى — Al-la-tee — (She) which (= s., f., 3rd person. An article, group, thing, person or phenomenon in feminine gender. A/t/a, ‘which’ and ‘the slaying of which’)
  • حَرَّمَ — Hur-ra-ma — Prohibited (= v., past., s., 3rd person. See حَرَّمَ above. Banned; barred; disallowed. A/t/a, ‘made sacred,’ ‘hath made sacred,’ ‘has declared sacred’ and ‘for that is forbidden’)
  • اللّٰهُ — Laa-ho — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)

A/t/a, ‘just cause,’ ‘justice,’ ‘in the course of justice,’  ‘in the cause of justice,’ ‘right’ and ‘a just cause (according to Islamic law)’
  • ذٰ لِكُمُ — Zaa-lay-ko-mo(l) — This is your (= This is a combination of three words. ذٰ means This. لِ means for the object, person, purpose or reason. And  كُمۡ  means you all. The combination means this is you or yours. A/t/a, ‘This,’ ‘That is’ and ‘Thus’)
  • وَصّٰ — Wuss-saa — Admonished (= v., past., s., 3rd person. Advised; commanded; laid down; mandated; ordered. A/t/a, ‘He has enjoined,’ ‘has He enjoined,’ ‘He hath  commanded’ and commanded. But ‘He enjoins’ and ‘exhorts’ in the present tense are no translations of the past tense that the Holy Qor-aan has used in its text)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., 2nd person. You men. See كُمۡ above. A/t/a, ‘upon you’)
  • بِ — Bay — With (= Literally the word بِ  means with. A/t/a, ‘with’ and ‘upon’)
  • هٖ — He — This (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to the aforesaid person)
  • لَعَلَّ — La-ul-la– So that (= Haply; hopefully; perchance; perhaps; possibly; hope and wish; maybe; wanting and wishing the result to be. A/t/a, ‘that … may,’ ‘in order that … may’ and ‘so that’)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., 2nd person. You all men. See  كُمۡ above)
  • تَعۡقِلُوۡنَ‏ — Tau-qay-loon — You act wisely (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Act intelligently, sensibly and  smartly; understand; utilize common sense. A/t/a, ’understand,’ ‘discern,’ ‘may (learn to) abstain (from evil)’ and ‘may grow in wisdom’)
