فَلَنَقُصَّنَّ عَلَيۡهِمۡ بِعِلۡمٍ وَّمَا كُنَّا غَآٮِٕبِيۡنَ‏

 

Fa  la  na-qoos-sun-na  alai  him  bay  il-min                                                                              Wa  maa  koon-naa  ghaa-aiy-bee-n

 

Then We will tell them facts with Knowledge                                                              And We have never been absent. 

 

  • فَ — Fa — Then (= Consequently; so; thereafter; therefore; then; thus; yet)
  • لَ — La — Certainly (= Absolutely; assuredly; categorically; clearly, definitely doubtlessly; earnestly; indeed; positively; really; truly; seriously; sincerely; specifically; surely; verily)
  • نَقُصَّنَّ — Na-qoos-sun-na — We will tell (= v., pres., pl., 1st person. Describe; narrate; relate; state; tell story. A/t/a, ‘We recount their whole story,’ ‘We shall relate,’ ‘will We … relate … their deeds,’ ‘We expound the true position,’ ‘We … relate … their deeds,’  ‘We will … relate … (true facts) with exact details,’ ‘We will relate … (the events),’ ‘We shall narrate … (the event),’ ‘We shall narrate (their whole story)’ and ‘We will recount what they have done’)
  • عَلَيۡ — Alai — On (= Above; against; before; during; for; on; on top of; over. A/t/a, ‘to’ and ‘unto’)
  • هِمۡ — Him — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; theirs)
  • بِ — Bay — With (= Literally the word  بِ  means with. A/t/a, ‘with,’ ‘from’ and ‘having’)
  • عِلۡمٍ– Il-min — Knowledge (= n. Accumulated facts. Awareness. Experience. Expertise. Familiarity with appropriate instructions, facts, intelligence, know-how, solid Intelligence and total information. Wisdom. A/t/a, ‘full knowledge of them’)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet. A/t/a, ‘for’)
  • مَاۤ — Maa — Never (= No; none; not; not at all)
  • كُنَّا — Koon-na — We have been (= v, past., pl., 1st person. Became. Happened. Occurred. Taken or took place or shape. This is a combination of two words. The 1st word كُنۡ conveys the continuation from the past to the present and leading into the future. The 2nd word  نَآ  means ‘all of us.’ Jointly the two  words mean ‘we had been’, ‘we ‘used to.’ A/t/a, ‘We have been,’ ‘We were,’ ‘We are’ and unto’)
  • غَآٮِٕبِيۡنَ — Ghaa-aiy-bee-n — Absent (= n., pl. Those who avoid, become absent, by-pass,    disappear, escape, give a slip, keep away or side-step. A/t/a, ‘absent,’ ‘absent (at any time or place,’ ‘absent (when it came to pass),’ ‘absent (from them when it came to pass’ and ‘watching over all their actions’)

فَلَنَسۡــَٔــلَنَّ الَّذِيۡنَ اُرۡسِلَ اِلَيۡهِمۡ وَلَـنَسۡـَٔـــلَنَّ الۡمُرۡسَلِيۡنَ ۙ ‏

 

Fa  la  naus-aa-laun-na  ul-la-zee-na  oor-say-la  elai  him                                                          Wa  la  naus-aa-laun-na  ul-moor-sa-lee-n

 

Then We surely will interrogate those to whom ** were sent                                And We surely will interrogate those who were sent.

  • اُرۡسِلَ — Oor-say-la — Were sent  **  (= v., past., pass., 3rd person. Were delivered, directed or dispatched, (a) books, codes, commands, directions or messages, or (b) messengers, or Prophets. فَمَا كَانَ دَعۡوٰٮهُمۡ اِذۡ جَآءَهُمۡ بَاۡسُنَاۤ اِلَّاۤ اَنۡ قَالُوۡۤا اِنَّا كُنَّا ظٰلِمِيۡنَ‏

 

Fa  maa  kaa-na  dau-waa  hoom  iz  jaa-aa  hoom  bau-so  naa                                              Il-laa  un  qua-loo  in-naa  koon-naa  zaa-lay-mee-n

 

Then their claim was nothing, when Our punishment struck them,                  Except that they said, “Most definitely have been the wrongdoers.”

The first word  اِنۡ  (in) means absolutely, certainly, positively, surely or verily; the  second word  نَآ  (naa) means we, us or our; and together the word  اِنَّا  (in-naa) combines both meanings. وَكَمۡ مِّنۡ قَرۡيَةٍ اَهۡلَـكۡنٰهَا فَجَآءَهَا بَاۡسُنَا بَيَاتًا اَوۡ هُمۡ قَآٮِٕلُوۡنَ

 

Wa  kum  min  qur-ya-tin  ah-luk  naa  haa                                                                                      Fa  jaa  aa  haa  bau-so  naa  ba-yaa-ton  auo  hoom  qaa-aiy-loo-n

 

And how many from a village were that We destroyed them                                      Since Our wrath befell them sleeping at night or napping in daytime.

اِتَّبِعُوۡا مَاۤ اُنۡزِلَ اِلَيۡكُمۡ مِّنۡ رَّبِّكُمۡ وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوۡا مِنۡ دُوۡنِهٖۤ اَوۡلِيَآءَ‌ ؕ قَلِيۡلًا مَّا تَذَكَّرُوۡنَ‏

 

It-ta-bay-oo  maa  oon-zay-la  elai  koom  min  rub-bay  koom                                                  Wa  laa  tut-ta-bay-oo  min  doo-nay  he  auo-lay-yaa-aa                                                        Qa-le-lun  maa  ta-zauk-ka-roo-n

 

Follow what was entrusted to you from your GOD                                                    And follow not  many friends other than Him.                                                                Little is what you remember.

  • مَّا — Maa — All that (= What; whatever; whatsoever. A/t/a, ‘How’)
  • تَذَكَّرُوۡنَ — Ta-zauk-ka-roo-n — Remember (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Follow directions. Have a regard. Keep in mind. Pay attention. Pay heed. Recall, Remember instruction, message or reminder. Stay admonished. Take heed. Take notice. Think hard. Think of. كِتٰبٌ اُنۡزِلَ اِلَيۡكَ فَلَا يَكُنۡ فِىۡ صَدۡرِكَ حَرَجٌ مِّنۡهُ لِتُنۡذِرَ بِهٖ وَذِكۡرٰى لِلۡمُؤۡمِنِيۡنَ‏

 

Kay-taa-boon  oon-za-la  elai  ka                                                                                                        Fa  laa  ya-koon  fee  saud-ry  ka                                                                                                      Ha-ra-joon  min  ho  lay  ton-zay-ra  bay  he                                                                                  Wa  zik-raa  lay  il-moe-may-nee-n

 

A Book was entrusted to you.                                                                                                  So let not there be in your heart                                                                                          Any reservation about it that you may warn with it                                                        And it’s a reminder for the Believers.

 

  • كِتٰبٌ — Kay-taa-boon — A Book (= n., The Divine Directive of Commands, Prohibitions  and Regulations. Holy Scripture.   • صَدۡرِ  — Saud-ray — Heart (= n., s., Refers to mind. Literally breast; bosom; chest)
  • كَ — Ka — Your (= pro., s., m., 2nd person. You. See كَ  above. A/t/a, ‘thy’)
  • حَرَجٌ — Ha-ra-joon — Reservation (= n., The word  حَرَجٌ  primarily means an obstruction and stoppage. Its usage in a text highlights its different nuances and the consequent shades of its meanings as explained in Note 004:066. As a noun reflecting action due to hesitancy. This verse has a command: “Have no reservation in your heart to warn with it. And it’s a reminder for the Believers.” The Holy Prophet, s.a.w.,  had no reason to stop him from practicing, preaching or this command. So, the following are most appropriate of the meanings of this word in that context: Dawdling. Delaying. Dithering. Dillydallying. Faltering. Hesitating. Indecision. Obstruction. Pause. Qualm. Reservation. Shillyshallying. Thinking.. Wavering.  A/t/a, ‘constraint,’ ‘straitness,’ ‘constriction,’ ‘straitening,’ ‘heaviness,’ ‘be oppressed … any difficulty,’ ‘be troubled’ and ‘be narrow’)
  • مِّنۡهُ — Min-ho — About it (= Combination of two words. The 1st word is  مِنۡ  (min) that means among, from, out of. The 2nd word  هُ (ho) is a pronoun for a single male in 3rd person that refers to the aforesaid person or thing or event as it. Together they mean about, from or out of it. A/t/a, ‘on account of it,’ ‘concerning it,’ ‘therefrom,’ ‘on this account,’ ‘about it’ and ‘on that account’)
  • لِ — Lay — For (= For the object, person, purpose or reason of; intended for; meant for; on account of; concerning; regarding; relative to. A/t/a, ‘Its purpose is that … mayest,’ ‘thou mayest,’ ‘mayest,’ ‘may,’ ‘mighest’ and ‘that’)
  • تُنۡذِرَ — Toon-zay-ra — You warn (= v., pres., 2nd person. Frighten; cause fear; make afraid; scare. A/t/a, ‘thou … warn.’ ‘thou warn,’ ‘thou … warn (the erring),’ ‘you …  warn (the erring),’ ‘you … warn’ and ‘you warn’)

Verses of the Holy Qor-aan are quoted on this site with the numbers, the first set of three being the number of Soorah (Chapter) followed by the last set of three being the number of the verse. The numbers include  بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ‏‏   as the verse #1 in every Soorah except the Soorah #9. The original Arabic word is shown first, or in Col #1. With the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful I begin.

Haul  yaun-zo-roo-na  il-laa  aun  tau-tay-ya  ho-mo  ol-ma-laa-aiy-ka-to                            Auo  yau-tay-ya  raub-bo  ka                                                                                                                Auo  yau-tay-ya  bau-dzo  aa-yaa-tay  raub-bay  ka

Are they lookin for anything but that the angels come to them,                                Or your GOD comes                                                                                                                  Or some signs of your GOD come?

The day some signs of your GOD come                                                                                No soul benefits from its belief                                                                                  That had not believed since before                                                                                        Or had earned any good in its belief.                                                                                Say, “You keep looking. We are also looking.”

اَوۡ تَقُوۡلُوۡا لَوۡ اَنَّاۤ اُنۡزِلَ عَلَيۡنَا الۡـكِتٰبُ لَـكُنَّاۤ اَهۡدٰى مِنۡهُمۡ‌ ۚ فَقَدۡ جَآءَكُمۡ بَيِّنَةٌ مِّنۡ رَّبِّكُمۡ وَهُدًى وَرَحۡمَةٌ‌  ۚ فَمَنۡ اَظۡلَمُ مِمَّنۡ كَذَّبَ بِاٰيٰتِ اللّٰهِ وَصَدَفَ عَنۡهَا‌ ؕ سَنَجۡزِى الَّذِيۡنَ يَصۡدِفُوۡنَ عَنۡ اٰيٰتِنَا سُوۡٓءَ الۡعَذَابِ بِمَا كَانُوۡا يَصۡدِفُوۡنَ

 

Auo  ta-qoo-loo  lao  un-naa  oon-zay-la  alai  naa  ul-kay-taa-ba                                              La  koon-naa  ah-daa  min  hoom                                                                                                    Fa  qaud  jaa-aa  koom  buy-yay-na-toon                                                                                      Min  rub-bay  koom  wa  ho-dun  wa  rah-mah

Fa  mun  uz-la-mo  mim-mun  kuz-za-ba  bay                                                                              Aaa-yaa-tay  il-aa-hay  wa  sa-da-fa  un  haa                                                                                Sa  nauj-zay  il-la-zee-na  yaus-day-foo-na                                                                                      Un  aa-yaa-tay  naa  soo  ul-azaa-bay                                                                                          Bay  maa  kaa-noo  yaus-day-foo-n

 

Or you say, “If the Book surely was sent upon us,                                                       We would have been more guided than them.”                                                              So, a clear sign has surely come to you                                                                              From your GOD and Guidance and Mercy.

Then who is more wrongful than he who belied                                                          The signs of Allah and turned away from it.                                                                    Soon we will recompense those who turn away                                                        From Our Signs the worst form of punishment                                                          Because of what they have been turning away.

  • اٰيٰتِ — Aa-yaa-tay … (il) — Signs (= n., pl of … An argument, corroboration, indication, insinuation, pointer, portent, prof, sign, suggestion, symbol or token. See Note 002:074. A/t/a, ‘Signs,’ ‘messages,’ ‘the revelations’  and ‘Ayat, ‘Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.)’ 
  • اللّٰهِ‌ — Laa-hay — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  •  صَدَفَ — Sa-da-fa — Turned away (= v., past., s., 3rd person. Tuned away as a gesture to   turn off one’s attention. Ignored. Paid no attention. Ceased to exist. Closed mind. Ended. Finished. Moved  away. Stepped aside. Turned aside. A/t/a, ‘turned away.’ But the present tense used in ‘turns away’ and ‘turns aside’ is no translation of the past tense used in the text of the Holy Qor-aan)
  •  عَنۡ — Un — From (= About; concerning; regarding; relative to. A/t/a,  ‘therefrom’)
  •  هَا — Haa — It (= pro., s., f., 3rd person., Refers to the aforesaid group of  the Signs of Allah. A/t/a, ‘them’ [almost all])
  • سَ — Sa — Soon (= This word turns a verb in the present tense to a verb in the future, soon; closely, quickly or swiftly)
  • نَجۡزِى — Nuj-zay — We impose (= v., pres., pl., 1st person. For bad or evil consequences of condemnation. Count, impose, inflict, pay back; punish; recompense; requit. [For good consequences of appreciation: see 006:085]. A/t/a, ‘We impose,’ ‘We award,’ We will certainly award,’ ‘We will requit,’ ‘We shall requit’ and ‘We shall surely recompence’)
  • ٱلَّذِينَ — Ul-la-zee-na — Those who (= pl., m, 3rd person. Refers to those articles, persons,  or phenomenon or things)
  • يَصۡدِفُوۡنَ  — Yaus-day-foo-na — They turn away (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. Tuning away as a gesture to turn off one’s attention. Ignore. Pay no attention. See  صَدَفَ  above. A/t/a, ‘turn away’ and ’turn aside’)
  • عَنۡ — Un — From (= About; concerning; regarding; relative to)

  •  الۡعَذَابِ — Azaa-bay — Punishment (= Appropriate, due and fair agony, chastisement,, doom, penalty, recompense; torment, torture or Scourge)
  •  بِمَا — Bay-maa — Because (= Combination of two words.  بِ  means ‘with / in’ and  مَاۤ  means ‘all that, whatever, whatsoever or whenever.’ See 002:092)
  •  كَانُوۡۤا — Kaa-noo — Had been (= v., past., s., m., 3rd person., Continued doing; used to; went on; were doing. Words has or had always been indicate endless continuity from the past to the present and leading into the future. A/t/a, ‘having’)
  •  يَصۡدِفُوۡنَ  — Yaus-day-foo-n — They turn away (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. See  يَصۡدِفُوۡنَ  above. A/t/a ‘will be sternly punished for their indifference,’ ‘they turned away,’ ‘their aversion,’ ‘their turning aside’ and ‘their turning away

 

See Note 006:158. The Holy Qor-aan in verse 006:158 described wrongdoers’ action with the word  يَصۡدِفُوۡنَ  which is a verb in the present tense, but translators translated it as follows.

  1. N J Dawod translated this verb in the present tense as a future prediction, i.e., they ‘will be sternly punished for their indifference.’
  2. M Muhammad Ali and M Ghulam Farid translated this verb in the present tense as if it were in the past tense, i.e., as ‘they turned away’
  3. Marmaduke Picktham translated this verb in the present tense as a noun, i.e., ‘their aversion.’
  4. M Zafrulla Khan translated this word as ‘their turning aside’ and M Sher Ali, Dr Ahmad Zidan and Muhsin Khan ‘their turning away.’

In short, the above works are no translations of the original text of the Holy Qor-aan.
