Phrase Allaa-ho-aa-hud meaning Allah is One             

 اللّٰهُ اَحَدٌ‌

 

The Unity of God is what the Phrase Allaa-ho-aa-hud meaning Allah is One is all about. It is repeated in several ways and some of its variations with their translations are as follows.

 

  1.  The Unity of God stated in words  ٱللَّهُ  and  اَحَدٌ  is in the verse 112:002.
  • اللّٰهُ — Allaa-ho — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)
  • اَحَدٌ — Aa-hud — One (=  All by Himself; individual; single; unique)

 

  1. The Unity of God stated in words لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا هُوَ‌ is in the verses 002:164, 003:007, 003:019, 006:103,  006:107,  009:031,  013:031,  059:023,  059:024, 064:014 and 073:010.
  • لَآ — Laa — No (= Naught; neither; never; none; nor; not at all. Total negation and absolute denial without exception)
  • إِلَـٰهَ — Elaa-ha — God (= n., The Creator who created everything and set Himself  Alone to be worshipped by all His Creation)
  • إِلَّا — Il-laa — Except (= Other than; Save)
  • هُوَ — Ho-wa  — Him (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. He; him; it. Refers to aforesaid shown, specified or stated article, thing or person who in this case is the Almighty God. This word in common parlance is pronounced as hoo by ignoring the vowel ka-sa-rah on its last word. The Phrase Allaa-ho-aa-hud meaning Allah is One shows some other ways also that the Holy Qor-aan has repeated its message about the Oneness of God.

 

  1. The Unity of God stated in words ٱللَّهُ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ  in the verses 002:256,  003:003,  004:088, 006:103,  006:107,  020:009 and 064:014 have added the following word to the above.
  • ٱللَّهُ — Allaa-ho — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)

 

  1. The Unity of God stated in words  لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اَنَا  in the verse 016:003 exchanged just one word.
  • اَنَا — Aa-na — I (= pro., pl., 1st person. Us. Refers to the Almighty God)

  •  مِنۡ  Min — From (= Among, from or out of the class or category of several

Phrase fe-sa-be-lil-laa-hay meaning In The Cause Of Allah

                                                                             فِىۡ سَبِيۡلِ اللّٰهِ                                                                              In the path of Allah

The word  سَبِيۡل  when joined with the word  فِىۡ  before it and the word  اللّٰهِ  after it forms the unique phrase fe-sa-be-lil-laa-hay. Its translation includes for the cause of Allah, for the sake of Allah, in the cause of Allah, in the path of Allah, on the road to Allah and on the way to Allah.

  • فِىۡ  — Fee — In (= In; concerning; regarding; in reference; relative to. Also, amidst, during or inside a time, place or event)
  • سَبِيۡلِ — Sa-bee-l..(il) — Cause (= n., s., Action; alternative; course; escape; line; means; measure; method; path; pretext; remedy; road; way. See Note 004:089. Some authors have translated this word with its reference to the context and added prefixes like appropriate, correct, good, linier, proper, right or straight as well as bad, evil, improper or incorrect before or after the following meanings of it.                                        1. وَاِذَا حُيِّيۡتُمۡ بِتَحِيَّةٍ فَحَيُّوۡا بِاَحۡسَنَ مِنۡهَاۤ اَوۡ رُدُّوۡهَا‌  ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ كَانَ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَىۡءٍ حَسِيۡبًا‏

 

Wa-ezaa-hoo-ye-toom-bay-ta-he-ya-tin                                                                                            Fa-huy-yoo-bay-ah-sa-na-min-haa-auo-rood-do-haa                                                                  In-nul-laa-ha-kaa-na-alaa-kool-lay-shai-in-ha-se-baa

 

And when you are greeted with a greeting                                                                      Then greet with a better one or return that at least                                                    Surely Allah has always been highly Calculating on every thing

مَنۡ يَّشۡفَعۡ شَفَاعَةً حَسَنَةً يَّكُنۡ لَّهٗ نَصِيۡبٌ مِّنۡهَا‌ ۚ  وَمَنۡ يَّشۡفَعۡ شَفَاعَةً سَيِّئَةً يَّكُنۡ لَّهٗ كِفۡلٌ مِّنۡهَا‌  ؕ وَكَانَ اللّٰهُ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَىۡءٍ مُّقِيۡتًا‏

 

Mun-yush-fau-sha-faa-aa-ton-ha-sa-na-ton                                                                                  Ya-koon-la-hoo-na-se-boon-min-haa                                                                                              Wa-mun-yush-fau-sha-faa-aa-ton-suy-yay-aa-ton                                                                    Ya-koon-la-hoo-kif-loon-min-haa                                                                                                      Wa-kaa-nul-laa-ha-alaa-kool-lay-shai-in-mo-qee-taa

 

Whoever intercedes a good intercession                                                                          Shall always have for himself a good share from it.                                                    And whoever intercedes an evil intercession                                                                    Shall always have for himself a responsibility from it.                                                  And Allah has always been a Mighty Watch on every thing.

  • شَفَاعَةً — Sha-faa-aa-ton — Intercession (= n., Recommendation; speech on behalf of another person. A/t/a, ’cause’)
  • حَسَنَةً — Ha-sa-na-ton — Goodness (= n., Achievement; anything good; best of the things in the best of the forms; blessing; good fortune; good fortune; good luck; lucky break; success. A/t/a, ‘good cause,’ ‘righteous’ and ‘in doing good (to others, and … for a righteous)’
  • يَّكُنۡ — Ya-koon — Shall always have (= v., pres., s., m., 3rd person., Continued doing; had been; used to; were, went on doing. فَقَاتِلۡ فِىۡ سَبِيۡلِ اللّٰهِ‌ ۚ   لَا تُكَلَّفُ اِلَّا نَـفۡسَكَ‌ وَحَرِّضِ الۡمُؤۡمِنِيۡنَ‌ ۚ  عَسَے اللّٰهُ اَنۡ يَّكُفَّ بَاۡسَ الَّذِيۡنَ كَفَرُوۡا‌ ؕ  وَاللّٰهُ اَشَدُّ بَاۡسًا وَّاَشَدُّ تَـنۡكِيۡلًا‏

 

Fa  qaa-til  fee  sa-be-lay  il-laa-hay                                                                                                    Laa  to-kul-la-fo  il-laa  nuf-sa  ka                                                                                                      Wa  hur-ray-dzay  il-moe-may-nee-na

Aa-saa  ul-laa-ho  un  ya-koof-fa  bau-sa  ul-la-ze-na  ka-fa-roo                                                Wa  ul-laa-ho  aa-shud-da  bau-sun  wa  aa-shud-da  tun-kee-laa

 

So push back in the cause of Allah —                                                                                  You are not made responsible except for yourself —                                                      And urge the believers to do the same.

Soon Allah will suppress the wrath of those who disbelieved.                              And Allah is very strong in Power and very strong in Punishment

  • اللّٰهِ‌ — Laa-hay — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)
  • لَا — Laa — No (= Naught; neither; never; none; nor; not at all; absolute denial and total negation without exception)
  • تُكَلَّفُ — To-kul-la-fo — Are burdened  (= v., past, 2nd person. Charged, imposed or loaded with duty. Inconvenienced. Put to hardship. Required. Tasked. Saddled with responsibility. A/t/a, ‘thou art not made responsible,’ ‘thou art not responsible,’ ‘thou art not taxed (with the responsibility for anyone,’ ‘you are accountable for none but yourself’ and ‘you are not tasked (held responsible)’. See Note 004:085 below)
  • اِلَّا — Il-laa — Except (= Apart from; but; besides; excluding; save; unless. A/t/a, ‘none but’)
  • نَـفۡسَ — Nuf-sa — Soul (= n., Heart; mind; self)
  • كَ  — Ka — You (= pro., s., m., 2nd person. You single male. The addressee of this divine message is initially the Holy Prophet  s.a.w and secondarily every Moslem, in fact every human being. See the Note under 002:005)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but;  also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • حَرِّضِ — Hur-ray-dz(il) — Urge to fight (= v., pres., m., s., 2nd person. Exhort; goad; motivate; move; push; rouse; spur; stimulate.  A/t/a, ‘incite … (to fight along with you),’ ‘urge on the believers,’ ‘urge on believers to fight’ and ‘urge on the faithful (to fight a war in self-defence’)
  • الۡمُؤۡمِنِيۡنَ‌ — Moe-may-nee-na — The believers (= n,. Adherents of Islam; those who enter the Faith, believe and follow the Holy Qor-aan, the Islaam and become Moslems. Men of faith. The faithful)
  • عَسَے — Aa-saa — Soon (= In near future; quite close; very near It could happen; maybe; peradventure; perchance; perhaps; quite  possibly. A/t/a, ‘it may be that’)
  • اللّٰهُ — Laa-ho — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
  • اَنۡ — Un —  That (= That)
  • يَّكُفَّ — Ya-koof-fa — Suppress (= v., pres., s, 3rd person. Check; defuse; limit; restrain; restrict; withhold.  A/t/a, ‘defeat’ and ‘break’)
  • بَاۡسَ — Bau-sa — Wrath (= n., Anguish; anxiety; apprehension; disquiet; distress;        fear; fretfulness; nervousness; unease; worry. Extreme anger or wrath. Also describes a moment of extreme discomfort and uncontrollable physical pain usually resulting in very fast heartbeats and palpitation. A/t/a, ‘the fighting,’ ‘the might,’ ‘the evil might of,’ ‘fury’ and ‘strength’)
  • ٱلَّذِينَ — Ul-la-zee-na — Those who (= pl., m, 3rd person. Refers to those in masculine gender that include all articles, things, persons or phenomenon
  • كَفَرُوۡا –Ka-fa-roo — They disbelieved (= v., past, pl., 3rd person. Denied, refused and rejected the Faith and belief in Allah, the Holy Qor-aan, Islam and become Moslem. See the commentary titled as Believe and Disbelieve. A/t/a, ‘disbelievers,’ ‘those who disbelieve,’ ‘those that disbelieve,’ ‘those who have chosen disbelief’ and ‘unbelievers’ are all translations as a noun of what the Holy Qor-aan has stated in a verb)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • اللّٰهُ — Laa-ho — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
  • اَشَدَّ — Aa-shud-da — Very strong (= adj., Better; firmer; greater; harder; more effective. A/t/a, ‘strong’, ‘stronger,’ ‘strongest’ and ‘mightier’)
  • بَاۡسًا — Bau-sun — Power (= n., This word has several meanings including (a) anger;   fury, rage; wrath, and (b) Ability, agility, competency,  dexterity, expertise, prowess, proficiency, skill and strength. Might. Power)
  • وَّ — Wa –And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • اَشَدَّ — Aa-shud-da — Very strong (= Adj., Firmer; harder; severer, stronger. See اَشَدَّ  above)
  •  تَـنۡكِيۡلًا‏ — Tun-kee-laa — Punishment (= n., Chastising; grueling; paying back for deeds done; reprimanding; unremitting. A/t/a ‘punishment,’ ‘to give exemplary punishment,’ ‘inflicting punishment,’ ‘inflicting exemplary punishment,’ ‘chastisement,’ ‘punishing’ and ‘more truculent than they’)

 

** Note 004:085. Rules generally start by negating a negative.  That is how the five words   لَا تُكَلَّفُ اِلَّا نَـفۡسَكَ‌  are structured in the Holy Qor-aan. They are best translated as stated above, i.e., You are not made responsible except for yourself

Authors who stated ‘Thou are held responsible only for thyself’ [aya] and ‘you are only accountable for yourself’ gave just the gist and not full translation of the five words by omitting to translate two words لَا and اِلَّا .

Paraphrasing only the essence of a text is one thing. But this site is committed to provide a simple and straightforward translation of the text of the Holy Qor-aan.

وَاِذَا جَآءَهُمۡ اَمۡرٌ مِّنَ الۡاَمۡنِ اَوِ الۡخَـوۡفِ اَذَاعُوۡا بِهٖ‌ ۚ  وَلَوۡ رَدُّوۡهُ اِلَى الرَّسُوۡلِ وَاِلٰٓى اُولِى الۡاَمۡرِ مِنۡهُمۡ لَعَلِمَهُ الَّذِيۡنَ يَسۡتَنۡۢبِطُوۡنَهٗ مِنۡهُم ۡ‌ؕ وَلَوۡلَا فَضۡلُ اللّٰهِ عَلَيۡكُمۡ وَرَحۡمَتُهٗ لَاتَّبَعۡتُمُ الشَّيۡطٰنَ اِلَّا قَلِيۡلًا‏

 

Wa-ezaa-jaa-aa-hoom-um-roon                                                                                                      May-nul-um-nay-aa-wil-khao-fay-azaa-oo-ba-he

Wa-lao-rud-doo-ho-aiy-lur-ra-soo-lay                                                                                          Wa-elaa-olil-um-ray-min-hoom                                                                                                        La-aa-lay-ma-hool-la-ze-na-yus-tun-bay-too-na-hoo-min-hoom

Wa-lao-laa-fudz-lool-laa-ha-alai-koom-wa-rah-ma-ta-hoo                                                        La-ut-ba-aa-to-moosh-shai-taa-na-il-la-qa-lee-laa

 

And when came to them the Order                                                                                        Of peace or fear, they spread it all around

And if they had turned it over to the Messenger                                                              And to those among them with the Order                                                                     Surely those of them interpreting would have known it

And if Allah’s munificence and mercy were not on you                                                You certainly would have followed the Satan except a few

اَفَلَا يَتَدَبَّرُوۡنَ الۡقُرۡاٰن َ‌ؕ  وَلَوۡ كَانَ مِنۡ عِنۡدِ غَيۡرِاللّٰهِ  لَوَجَدُوۡا فِيۡهِ اخۡتِلَافًا كَثِيۡرًا

 

Aa-fa-laa-ya-ta-dub-ba-roo-nul-qor-aan                                                                                          Wa-lao-kaa-na-min-in-day-ghai-ril-laa-hay                                                                                La-wa-ja-doo-fee-hikh-tay-laa-fun-ka-thee-raa

 

Then why don’t they ponder over the Qor-aan?                                                                And if it was from anyone besides Allah                                                                              Surely they would have found in it a lot of conflict

وَيَقُوۡلُوۡنَ طَاعَةٌ   فَاِذَا بَرَزُوۡا مِنۡ عِنۡدِكَ بَيَّتَ طَآٮِٕفَةٌ مِّنۡهُمۡ غَيۡرَ الَّذِىۡ تَقُوۡلُ‌ ؕ  وَاللّٰهُ يَكۡتُبُ مَا يُبَيِّتُوۡنَ‌ ۚ  فَاَعۡرِضۡ عَنۡهُمۡ وَتَوَكَّلۡ عَلَى اللّٰهِ‌ ؕ  وَكَفٰى بِاللّٰهِ وَكِيۡلًا‏

 

Wa-ya-qoo-loo-na-taa-aa-toon                                                                                                          Fa-ezaa-ba-ra-zoo-min-in-day-ka                                                                                                      Buy-ya-ta-taa-aiy-fa-toon-min-hoom                                                                                                Ghai-rul-la-zee-ta-qoo-lo                                                                                                                    Wul-laa-ho-yuk-to-bo-maa-yo-buy-yay-too-na                                                                              Fa-au-ridz-un-hoom-wa-ta-wuk-kul-alul-laa-hay                                                                          Wa-ka-faa-bil-laa-ha-va-kee-laa

 

They say, “Obedience is our goal.”                                                                                        Then when they went out from your presence                                                                  A group from among them spent the night                                                                        Doing other than what you preach.                                                                               And Allah records how they spend night(s).                                                                     So, turn away from them and trust on Allah.                                                                   And Allah has always sufficed as a real Guardian.

مَنۡ يُّطِعِ الرَّسُوۡلَ فَقَدۡ اَطَاعَ اللّٰهَ ‌ ۚ  وَمَنۡ تَوَلّٰى فَمَاۤ اَرۡسَلۡنٰكَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ حَفِيۡظًا  ؕ‏

 

Mun-yo-tay-ir-ra-soo-la-fa-qud-ataa-ul-laa-ha                                                                        Wa-mun-ta-wul-laa-fa                                                                                                                        Maa-ur-sul-naa-ka-alai-him-ha-fee-zaa

 

Whoever obeys the messenger has indeed obeyed Allah                                              And whoever turned around must then know that                                                        We have not sent you as a guardian on them

  • عَلَيۡ — Alai — On (= Above; against; before; during; for; on; on top of; over; to; upon)
  • هِمۡ — Him — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3 rd person. Refers to aforesaid people)
  • حَفِيۡظًا — Ha-fee-zaa — As a guardian (= n., Protector; responsible; warden; watch. A/t/a, ‘keeper,’ ‘watcher,’ ‘To watch over … (evil deeds),’ ‘warder’ and ‘guardian … (so as o be held  accountable for their actions)’

The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                     004:080

 

مَاۤ اَصَابَكَ مِنۡ حَسَنَةٍ فَمِنَ اللّٰهِ‌  وَمَاۤ اَصَابَكَ مِنۡ سَيِّئَةٍ فَمِنۡ نَّـفۡسِكَ‌ ؕ  وَاَرۡسَلۡنٰكَ لِلنَّاسِ رَسُوۡلًا‌ ؕ  وَكَفٰى بِاللّٰهِ شَهِيۡدًا‏

 

Maa-asaa-ba-ka-min-ha-sa-na-tin-fa-may-nul-laa-hay                                                          Wa-maa-asaa-ba-ka-min-suy-yay-aa-tin-fa-min-nuf-say-ka                                                Wa-ur-sul-naa-ka-lin-naa-say-ra-soo-laa                                                                                    Wa-ka-faa-bil-laa-hay-sha-hee-daa

 

Whatever good reached you was from Allah                                                              And whatever evil struck you was from your own self                                                And We have sent you to the people as a Messenger                                                      And Allah has sufficed as a witness

 

  • مَاۤ — Maa — Whatever (= All that; whatever; whatsoever)
  • اَصَابَ — Aa-saa-ba — Reached (= v., past., m., s., 3rd person.  Affected; arrived; befallen; befell; came to; fell on; hit; landed on; overcame; overtook; reached; smut; struck; suffered by; struck; touched; was delivered. A/t/a, ‘befalls,’ ‘befalleth,’ ‘happens to,’ ‘comes to’ and ‘reaches’ but such translation of a verb is in the present tense of what the Holy Qor-aan has stated in the past tense)
  • كَ —  Ka — You (= pro., s., m., 2nd person. You single male. See also the Note under 002:005. A/t/a ‘(O man) … thee.’ ‘thee (O man),’ ‘thee,’ ‘you, man’ and ‘you (O people)’
  • مِنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of the class or category of several
  • حَسَنَةٍ — Ha-sa-na-tin — Good (= n., Achievement; anything good; best of the things in the best of the forms; blessing; good fortune; success; goodness; lucky break; lucky chance)
  • فَ — Fa — Then (= After all this, at the end, consequently, finally, hence, in conclusion; so, thereafter, therefore or thus)
  • مِنَ — May-na…(ul) — From (= Among, from or out of the class or category of several
  • اللّٰهِ — Laa-hay — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet)
  • مَاۤ — Maa — Whatever (= All that; what; whatever; whatsoever)
  • اَصَابَ — Aa-saa-ba — Struck (= v., past., m., s., 3rd person. Affected; arrived. See  اَ  صَا بَ  above)
  • كَ — Ka — You (= pro., s., m., 2nd person. You single male.  See كَ above)  
  • مِنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of the class or category of several
  • سَيِّئَةٍ — Suy-yay-aa-tin — Bad thing (= n., s., Bad thing, evil, crime; error; ill, illegality, misdeed, misfortune, mistake, occurrence or wrong done accidentally or forgetfully without much premeditated intention. Generally used for a single unintended accidental occurrence. ** See the Note below)
  • فَ  — Fa — Then (= After all this, at the end, consequently. See فَ above)
  • مِنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of the class or category of several
  • نَّـفۡسِ — Nuf-say — Self (= n., Person; soul. A/t/a, ‘thy (own) soul,’ ‘from thyself,’ ‘your ownselves,’ ‘yourself’ and ‘is of your own earning’)  
  • كَ — Ka — Your (= pro., s., m., 2nd person. You single male. See كَ  above)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ above)
  • اَرۡسَل — Ur-sul — Have sent (= v., past., 1st person. Appointed; deputed; deputized; dispatched; sent)
  • نَآ — Naa — Us (= pro., m & g., pl., 1st person. Our; We. Used with God’s name it is the authoritative way a higher-up talks to a subordinate)
  • كَ — Ka — You (= pro., s., m., 2nd person. You single male. A/t/a, ‘Thee (Muhammad).’
  • لِ — L(in) — For (= Because of; concerning; due to; for the object, purpose or reason of; intended for; on account of; regarding; relative to. A/t/a, belonging to; to; towards. A/t/a, ‘To (instruct)’ and ‘for the good of’)
  • لنَّاسِ — Naa-say — The people (= Factions; folks, mankind, groups of men, nations  or tribes. Human beings A/t/a, ‘all mankind’)
  • رَسُوۡلًا — Ra-soo-laa — Messenger (= n., s., Apostle; God’s messenger; prophet; sage; saint)

Next four words also appear in  004:167

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ above)
  • كَفٰى — Ka-faa — Has sufficed (= v., past., s., 3rd person. Has been adequate, ample; appropriate, enough, plenteous, proper, satisfactory, sufficient, suitable or fully capable and in control.  A/t/a, ‘enough is,’ is ‘sufficient’  and ‘your all-sufficient’               are translations as a noun and also ‘suffices’ as a verb in the present tense, but none of them are of what the Holy Qor-aan has described as a verb in the past tense)
  • بِ — B..(il) — With (= Literally the word بِ  means with)
  • اللّٰهِ — Laa-hay — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
  • شَهِيۡدًا — Sha-hee-da — Witness (= n., s., Attester, observer, onlooker, testifier, verifier, watch, watcher or witness. Adducer of proof. Bearer, giver or provider of evidence or testimony. Producer of corroboration. Also, a helper, seer or supporter. ** See Note to 004:070)

 

** Note oo4:080. One author has clearly distinguished the two different meanings of the same one pronoun كَ  by translating كَ   in  اَصَابَكَ  as ‘you (O people)’ and then the same  كَ  in  اَرۡسَلۡنٰكَ as ‘you (O Muhammad).’
