People of the Pits

People Of the Pits

The 085:001 starts with God’s names and conveys the eternal message that those who hurt the Believers will be punished even though they can’t see it today with naked eye. They can repent truly to make amends because the Almighty is All-Forgiving, All-Loving – 085:015. Otherwise all worldly control, power or kingship (002:259) won’t save them from God’s wrath. He cites (085:002) natural elements (الۡبُرُوۡجِ Bo-rooj) of starry patterns, constellations, galaxies, mansions and spindles He made visible to us to lead us to believe in what He chose to keep invisible.

Allah swore by His creation of the Space and Stars. He chose the scene of cruelty by a few men who controlled the pits (085:006) where the fire was fed with a lot of fuel (085:006). The controllers put other human beings on stakes, burnt them alive and sat (085:006) watching (085:007) them. The victims were believers (085:009). The abomination was staged publicly to warn the others. This practice is as long as man’s history. Abraham was set up for that but God saved him. Pharaohs did that. Jews did it to the Christians. Christian crusades did that to the others. Moslems were fore-warned but they still practiced it. They burn their opponents even today. One of the significance of this Soorah is that it has prepared all future believers in advance. Those violated are consoled that His Seizure Is Strong And Very Severe (085:013). Those committing the atrocity have been put on a very clear notice of their total ruin (085:005). Forever all have been told of the divine scheme of things though some men do not understand. He knows the reasons why He planned that way and told man to wait (086:016 to 018). After all He Is The Doer Of What He Intends (085:016).

085:004 states the ‘witness’ شَاهِدٍ and the ‘witnessed’ مَشۡهُوۡدٍ although some translations have extrapolated them to mean differently. For example, Allamah Nooruddin referred شَاهِدٍ to the Holy Prophet s.a.w and مَشۡهُوۡدٍ to his community. And Dr Al-Hilali and Dr Khan referred شَاهِدٍ to the “Witnessing day, the Friday’ and مَشۡهُوۡدٍ to the “Witnessed Day, i.e. the day of Arafah (Hujj) the ninth of Dhul-Hijjah.”

085:005 shows that those who victimized ( اَصۡحٰبُ الۡاُخۡدُوۡدِ , us-haa-bool-ookh-dood) were ruined. A translation referred this phrass to a long story of a ‘Boy and a King’ and unfortunately tried to belittle the divinity of the message to the triviality of a fable.

085:009 provides the reason why the controllers, persecutors, patrons and spectators sat watching the brutalization. They disliked, hated and ill-treated by burning the victims alive for no fault except that they had believed in the Almighty.

The Almighty God concludes the lesson relative to the People of Pits as follows.
1. He tells all that everything belongs to Him and He witnesses everything (085:010).
2. He warns the persecutors of the believers with dire consequences (085:010).
3. He promises the Believers the Paradise as the best reward (085:010).
4. He reiterates that His Catching is indeed very severe (085:013).
5. He is the Doer Of What He Intends (085:016). He will surround the People of Pits all around (085:021) so they can’t escape the punishment for having wronged the Believers.

Prayers to protect from evil

Prayer to protect from evil

The 113:001 starts with God’s names and urges man to seek His protection from evil of all kinds. He made everything and can unmake it. He tears apart things when He wills. He can protect from all evil in His creation — in the dark, in the planners and plotters, in the works of jealousy.

113:002 directs to pray by saying قُلۡ (‘You say …’) that carries numerous connotations such as the following.
1. It commands a reader to deliver the message to all other persons in the whole wide world.
2. It orders him to tell himself too so that his telling only others is not an act of hypocrisy.
3. It directs the reader to acknowledge that he has received the message he gives others.
4. It mandates him to express his state of mind with the resolves like “I will do that.”

113:002 further exhorts to seek the protection of God of Cleaving (ٱلۡفَلَقِ, faluque) that among other things means as follows.
1. To cause something to burst open like the dawn or daybreak tears apart a night.
2. To cause the appearance, emergence and prevailing of the truth.
3. To split especially along a plane of natural weakness.
4. To broaden the depth of the request by seeking ‘protection from all evil ‘out there’ by ‘tearing it apart’ and ‘cleaving’ it.

113:003 elaborates the sphere of Evil. Man knows certain evils such as ‘mischief, bad things created as a test, set back, speed bump or stumbling block albeit temporary.’ But he can’t know ‘all that (مَا , maa) whatever, whenever and wherever’ that lies in all that He has created (خَلَقَ, kha-la-qua), brought into being, designed, fashioned or structured. Narrow meanings are conveyed by translating the prayer to ‘Seek protection from the evil He created.’ But very broad meanings appear in translations to “Seek protection from the evil of whatever He created.’ The broader meanings are obviously justified by the fact that God Almighty created everything and nothing really is inherently evil but its misuse or abuse by man is that makes it bad. Just as the Almighty’s blessings, forgiveness, grace, kindness and mercy have no bounds, man’s prayer like all prayers should be as broad as possible.

113:004 quotes one environment that breeds all kinds of evil for Man regardless of his color, creed or culture. Evil thrives in darkness, particularly when it has (وَقَبَ, wa-qub) become thick and is intensified into pitch dark, overspread with the thickness similar to what appears when the full moon has entered a total eclipse.

113:005 enumerates the evil of the blowers (ٱلنَّفَّـٰثَـٰتِ, nuf-fus-saa-tay) in the knots. Their kinds can be the breathers, the conjurers and evil whisperers who try to deter or obstruct good pursuits, the practitioners of secret arts and malignant methods, the promoters who join hands in witchcraft or the witches who cast evil suggestions. Their overt acts can be entering (لۡعُقَدِ, oqud) accords, agreements, compacts, pacts, pledges, resolutions, solutions and settlements which are agreed upon and firmed up between parties like in one or all of the following scenarios.
1. The age-old custom of concluding a solemn affirmation by blowing into hands.
2. The final step in the process of firming up an agreement, compact or mutual relationship.
3. The removal of complications which may have hitherto hindered finalizing a settlement.
4. The opening the knots that were tied up earlier.

113:006 specifies the evil of a jealous person when he perpetrates jealousy (حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ ). It is a fact of life we all experience, all the time, in all places. There have been in the past and there will always be in the future innumerable types of prejudices. Burning alive on the flaming fire for flouting established religion (085:005) may be just in the past. Protection from the evils of all kinds of biases and jealousy is as important today as in days gone by. Examples of this harsh reality abound all political, fiscal, social, professional or clerical arenas. In the world of today 2015 AD the most prominent may be have’s, have-nots and color-prejudices. Not at all is uncommon phenomenon to see the real impact of the evils of jealousy, grudge and biases. Ask the victim when an act of jealousy inflicted on him a harm or committed a crime against him.
 Ask a religious minority member in Pakistan or ISIS-controlled Iraq.
 Ask a ghetto resident who can’t improve his housing in many rich countries.
 Ask a black unemployable person in several places because he never got training.
 Ask a convict who lived a dozen years on death-row until DNA proved his innocence.
 Ask a poor who must feed his family in less than his rich neighbor spends in his dinner.
 Ask a child who attends integrated school hungry as his rich seatmate eats lavish lunch.
 Ask hundreds of first-responders battling cancer as Congress won’t fund insurance.
 Ask thousands of dependents of the innocent killed in World Trade Center on 9/11.
 Ask hundreds of thousands of dependents of Iraqis killed by oil-hungry foreigners.
 Ask millions of victims of religious and ethnic prejudices everywhere in the world.
The reasons go on and on why God taught to seek protection against the perpetrators of jealousy.

Whispering

Whispering – Prayer to protect from

The 114:001 starts with God’s names and urges man to seek His protection from the evil of whispering – gossips, idle talks, innuendos, secrets, whispers and all kinds of he-said, they-said, you-said and I-said.

The word يُوَسۡوِسُ (yo-wus-way-so) is a verb in present and future tense (Mo-dzaa-ray). Its best translation is whispers’ or ‘incites’ – a transitive verb. Other equivalents of this word can be any person or thing that creates incitement, that grows, sneaks or suggests bad thoughts, that causes images to crop up in one’s mind or that develops images of wild wicked imagination.

The noun of aforesaid verb is (وَسۡوَاسِ, wus-waas) that means whispering. It includes acts of sneaking, conjuring witches, gossips, incitements, innuendos, insinuations, and suggestions made by other people as well as secret, silent or slinking ideas that crop up from nowhere.

Although it is the mind where all ideas arise, in Arabic the expression used is arising in صُدُور (so-doo-r, plural of sa-dur) that literally means ‘hearts’ and has been translated as ‘bosoms, breasts, chests and souls.

This verb يُوَسۡوِسُ signifies the commencement of an unending process of just imagined situations. Everyone suffers occasional bouts of evil thoughts that stem from some smell, scene or memory. The original thought and reaction appear out of thin air as if someone had secretly whispered them. The time-wasting unproductive mental gymnastic sequence keeps growing, often exponentially. The wild imagination occasionally slows down as if to evaluate the impact of the initial whispering. Diminishing or dissipation of these wild evil thoughts is short-lived but return stronger, severer. After a brief lull the suggestive injection invariably lunges forward with much mightier onslaught. Successive waves of pure imagination, brief reprieves and day dreaming establish vicious cycle. The thought process grows more lucrative by the minute as most efforts to curb or control it fail. Most people experience them and succumbing to them is easy like flowing in a downhill torrent. Stopping such unproductive chain of thoughts is hard and is tantamount to climbing uphill path. Checking these useless wild flights involving unreal out-of-life episodes just imagined is not easy. However, they are surmountable with the help of the prayers, patience and persistence (002:046).

Verses 002:068, 002:209; 003:037, 023: 098, 025:066; 041:037 and Soorah 114 provide prayers. A heavy dose of will-power coupled with these prayers are effective to suppress all evil tendencies. The roots to all mischief in the world are conceived ignoble thoughts, ideas, designs plans and plots. The prayers seeking God’s protection are the proven strategy to ward off those.

Law – Marriage in Isslaam

LAW

Marriage in Isslaam
(A brief introduction to lead into studying the original text in the Holy Qor-aan)

Divine guidance for marriage is provided in 002:222.   It declares improper to marry an idolater or idolatress because they lead to a real burning.   This burning can include marital chaos and disturbance of the life that give heart-burns.   On the other hand Allah invites to the blessings such as forgiveness and peaceful paradise.   The successful marriages generally build on mutual respect, understanding and forgiveness.   The 066:006 guides that the best wife is a believer, follower, loyal, sincere and worshiper.   Happy healthy families serve the purposes of human procreation and evolution lot better.  A home with loving environment is conducive to raise children who improve communities. Provisions floodlighting the issue from various different angles include 004:021, 004:025.   Commentary Woman – Role in Evolution hints at the effects of discarding such protocol. History shows that a good marriage has contributed in the human evolution tremendously.  Conversely the opposite has rung death knoll to others who violate it is stated in 007:082.  Keeping chaste till marriage is ordered and forcing girls to flout that is forbidden – 024:034. Prohibited is marrying a woman who is related in any of the ways  shown in verse 004:024.

Formation and dissolution of marriage in Islaam is done by contract.  It requires an open and public proposal and acceptance by competent parties, a consideration, and witnesses.
(a) Marrying cousins is allowed (033:051) but prohibited with several other relations specified in 004:023 and 004:024.  Open and public requirement is met by customarily manifesting intents to marry before a clergyman and two witnesses.  Marrying slaves and widows (004:026; 024:033) is regulated just like marrying a free person.
(b) Manifestation of intent to marry can be expressed personally (002:236) or thru an authorized agent, Wali.
(c) The consideration called Huq-Mehr or dowry is fixed (002:237 & 238).   It always remains a debt (004:025) until paid.   It must be paid happily unless remitted voluntarily (004:005).   Anyone who cannot financially afford to pay dower is recommended to remain chaste (024:034) until his situation improves.
(d) Many aspect of a divorce are dealt with in 002:229 to 242 and in the Notes placed at their ends.  Some Notes show how failure to translate some clauses accurately has led to misrepresent the true teachings of Islam.   And then the prohibitions and procedures are outlined in 004:020 to 023, 033:051 and 065:002.

Islaam does not recognize marriage between non-competent parties, man or woman, or living together.    Such cohabitation is treated as an illicit relationship which is voidable as a marriage and illegal.   Most sects stigmatize the children of such unions as illegitimate to block them from inheritances.   This is one reason why Islaam sanctified and meticulously regulated the institution of marriages.   The Holy Qor-aan has codified and specified every what, when, why or how aspect of marriage.   But the clergy has added many cultural and communal values to marriage and called them Islamic.   They-said-I-said-you-said-add-ons for centuries padded a Moslem marriage with huge burdens.   Marriage, dower, divorce and no issue was left out of being disfigured from its original format.   The 20th century Moslem legislatures have restored some original dictates in many nations.

Dissolution or Termination of marriage can be effected in several recognized ways.
(a) Wife’s right to dissolve her marriage is called Kholah. Permitted in 004:129 to 131, the exercise of that right has been extensively detailed in the 65th Chapter Ut-Talaaq (Divorce) and the 66th Chapter Ut-tuh-reem (Prohibition).
(b) Husband’s right to dissolve his marriage is called Talaq and is dealt at length in verses 002:228 to 002:238.
(c) Peer group of parties can counsel (065:003), try to save, or finally dissolve a marriage through the process commonly recognized in secular law as arbitration.
(d) Courts can dissolve a marriage by means of judicial decree in proper proceedings. Pakistani Shariat Law of 1962 and Egyptian laws illustrate judicial divorcing.

Historically, albeit incorrectly as shown in our Note 002:228,  a man’s right to divorce was treated as absolute, subject to the requirement of publicly pronouncing such intent three times.  Generally, wife’s dependence upon husband for living (004:035), husbands’ earning power and desire to dissolve marriage fast and clergy’s well-known greed to follow money, resulted in clerics’ approving ‘I divorce you’ announced three times in just one go.   Husbands’ ability to divorce immediately has been checked by Laws in many Moslem states, legislating provisions already recognized by some Moslem schools which required that the 3 pronouncements must be 30 to 40 days apart.   In accordance with the Holy Qor-aan they also promote reconciliation by interspersed periods of counseling.   Ahmadiyya jurisprudence mandates counseling (004:036) and opportunity to reconcile as the first, essential prerequisite to dissolve a marriage as warranted (065:003).

Remarriages are encouraged in Islaam.   Man can marry after divorce.   Woman must observe a waiting period (065:002, 065:005) that range from 40 to 90 days when pregnancy, child’s paternity and rights of inheritance are confirmed.   Polygamy is permitted based upon the prevalent interpretations of 004:004 but Moslems cannot practice it in western countries.   For instance, USA Immigration Law categorically prohibits it.   Some Moslem countries such as Pakistan have recently enacted laws that mandate wife’s prior, written consent before her husband is allowed to remarry.   Academically and culturally Moslems encourage remarrying of divorcees but the clergy in some countries has fabricated heinous and humiliating immoral practices that are forced upon the divorced women before they can remarry.   A Philadelphia Attorney asked me in 1992 as to the Islamic justification to imprison a divorced woman like he saw nearly 4,000 of them after World War II languishing in Egyptian and Turkish jails when each had been divorced and no man had yet come up to take her as a wife; my answer was the truth, “None whatsoever.”

The Holy Qor-aan mandates what is appropriate.   Practicing its teachings would not have let many societal ills to crop up and surround marriage and divorce issues.   The situation will get overhauled if those teachings are implemented in three areas.
a. Counseling both spouses if a marriage goes on the rocks.
b. Referring both parties to courts for judicial divorce if a party refuses counseling or arbitration by the peers.
c. Encouraging and helping divorced individuals in the community to remarry promptly.
