The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                   113:001 to 006

Verses of the Holy Qor-aan are quoted on this site with a 6-digit number; the first three digits tell of Soorah (Chapter) and the last three digits tell of verse. Numbering includes بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ‏‏    as verse #1 in every Soorah except Soorah #9. The phonetic transliteration in English is based upon words commonly pronounced as bat, cat, sat → fate, gate, hate → bait, trait → bay, nay, say → be, he, she → bet, pet, wet → bit, fit, sit → cot, dot, rot → boot, hoot, root → bout, rout → but, cut, hut, rut. An Arabic letter with the vowel Fatah is best shown with a‘u’ as in cut, hut, rut, but letter ‘a’ is often placed before ‘u’ to make it doubly sure that it is read as in cause, pause, clause and not with a sound of ‘oo’ as in hoot, root, shoot or put. All Arabic words are translated in American English and are followed by alternates which other translators have used.

  • سۡمِ — Iss-may … (il) — The name of (= The way to be addressed or called)
  • اللهِ — Laa-hay … (ir) — Allah (= The Almighty God; the One Only worthy of worship)

** Note 113:002. Many translations of ٱلۡفَلَقِ are ‘Cleaving’ meaning “To split, or make something split, especially along a plane of natural weakness.” They broaden the depth of the request for ‘protection from the harmful evil that is out there’ by ‘cleaving it’ or ‘tearing it apart.’

  • يَدَآ — Ya-daa — Both hands (= n., 2pl for two things (unique in Arabic). Two hands. Hand is the terminal part of a body where an arm ends. Refers to one’s front and back covered by powerful allies whom he can reach for help and succor. Both flanks strengthened by big mighty supporters)
  • أَبِى — Aa-bee — Father (= Master; owner; person with power over)
  • لَهَبٍ — La-ha-bin … (w) — Flames (= n., Blazes. Points to anger. Refers to the fiery temper and haughty enemies)

  • تَبَّ — Taub — Ruined (= v., past., s., 3rd person. Annihilated. Destroyed. Doomed. Perished. Totally failed)

** Note 111:002a. This verse is an historical account of an individual.  He had amassed a lot of wealth, muscle power and gathered supporters to covering his flanks.  He was an uncle of Holy Prophet s.a.w and his staunchest opponent and named Abee-Lahb.  Name Abee-Lahb is also a phrase which is comprised of two different, quite distinct words.  The first is أَبِى  which means the father, master, owner or person with power and control.  The second is لَهَبٍ  which literally means the flames and refers to the hot-tempered person.  The combination of these 2 words reflects a person who has a fiery temper and a short fuse.  Such men usually attract more of their kind around them and form gangs to reflect leaders.  His name portrayed his character.

** Note 111:002b. This verse provides an historical account about an individual who had a lot of muscle power and gathered many supporters covered his flanks. They all perished when they opposed the Messenger of God. A similar, total and utter ruin awaits those who oppose the work of God being pursued by those engaged in that. This is a rule of universal application.

** Note 111:003. The word  مَاۤ  has more than one meaning, including no, not all, never as well as all that, what, whatsoever as shown in Note 004:067. Much wider meanings spring up by seeing this word as a combination of two words. Firstly, مَاۤ (maa) meaning all that; whatever or whatsoever. Secondly,  لَ  (la) meaning belongs to, is owned by, is for the benefit, purpose or reason. But the word  مَالُ  (maa-lo) is different and means all that is owned, assets, belongings, benefits, connections, concessions, gains, money, property, richness, savings, wealth, etc.)

** Note 111:003a. There is a clear distinction between مَا لُهُ ۥ and  مَا ڪَسَب. The former means the assets, property, wealth and fortune a person may have inherited. The latter includes all that he may have himself earned and added to aforesaid inheritance. The moral is that whoso abuses his resources will see them wasted if not put to good use. This forecast for the future is a matter of universal application for the entire mankind.  Anything abused or misused will destroy the very abuser and misuser.

* Note 110:004a.   The word اسۡتَغۡفِرۡ ‘ literally means ‘Seek forgiveness.’   Prophets are known to exemplify the revelations to them.   That is why one interpretation has been to “Seek forgiveness’ for others who join in waves in regard to their human shortcomings.” However, enormously broader meanings are to “Implore forgiveness for not only yourself but also for all those who already have joined you and those behind who have yet to join you in regard to all their human frailties, shortcomings and weaknesses.” See our Commentary “Praying for others

The concept was well-worded by Dr Majid Ali in a poem that can be translated as follows.
The Greatness of the Great God (Azam) is for everyone
The worship of His worshiper (Abid) is for everyone.

Indeed the prayers and worship of a true worshiper are for all – for everyone and not just anyone.   The Great Glorious God mandated the Holy Prophet s.a.w to do that to benefit all.   He directed him s.a.w with the “You Say” specifically and singularly as an Abid (109:005).   He labeled His bondsmen as Qao-min Aabedeen (a nation of those who are Abid) (021:107).   He declared him s.a.w as the “Blessing and Mercy for all those in the Universe” (021:108).   He entrusted all the followers of the Holy Prophet s.a.w with that responsibility (002:005).   He had set up a similar reward (and the duty) in the Zaboor (the Book of David) and the Zikr (the Book of Moses) that His servants will ‘inherit the land’ (= rule the world) – 021:106.

** Note 110:004b.   The meanings of the words from the Arabic root of التَّوَّابُ are so vast and varied that they can’t be compressed or condensed in a word or phrase in English.   They imply BESEECHING for 1) forgiveness, 2) recovery, 3) reversal, 4) rewards better than those sought even when the acts seeking them prove to be mistakes and 5) the Almighty God generously forgiving all mistakes and granting all that was initially requested in the prayers.   See also 002:038 and 002:055.

Bis-mil-laa-hir-rah-maa-nir-ra-heem

With the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful I begin.

  • بِ — B…(is) — With (= This Arabic word literally means ‘with’. Its translation in English is more accurate with ‘with’ than with ‘in’)
  • سۡمِ — Ism…(il) — The name of (= The way to be addressed or called)
  • اللهِ — Laa-h…(ir) — Allah (= The Almighty God; the One Only worthy of worship)
  • الرَّحۡمٰنِ — Rah-maa-n(ir) — The Most Beneficent (= The One who fully, totally and wholly benefits all, to the maximum, with no condition, limitation or restriction. Compassionate. Gracious)
  • الرَّحِيۡمِ — Ra-heem — The Most Merciful (= The One who fully, totally and wholly showers mercy, to the maximum, again and again, continually, indefinitely and perpetually like the endlessly incoming waves from the oceans)

The Holy Qor-aan                                          109:002                                     قُلۡ يَـٰٓأَيُّہَا ٱلۡڪَـٰفِرُونَ

Qool-yaa-ayyo-hul-kaa-fay-roon

You say: Listen! you all ungrateful persons

  • قُلۡ — Qool — You say (= Announce, assert, broadcast, call, convey, elaborate, explain, expound, inform, instruct, maintain, preach, proclaim, profess, specify, state or tell (a) others, (b) yourself, (c) acknowledge the receipt and (d) express
your intent and resolve to live by the message.) *
  • يٰۤ — Yaa — Listen (= Be attentive; pay attention; hearken; O!)
  • اَيُّهَا — Ayyo-h(ul) — You all (= All addresses;, entire or whole of the audience)
  • ٱلۡڪَـٰفِرُونَ — Kaa-fe-roon — The ungrateful (= 1. Non-appreciating; thankless; who abuse, misuse, fail to use or reject the Faith and God-given gifts, opportunities or talents 2. Disbelievers; faithless; infidels; non-believers; unbelievers)

* Note 109:002. The word قُلۡ means ‘you say’ (Read our Commentary titled “You Say’ Means“) and carries numerous connotations including the following.
1. Firstly, it commands the reader to deliver the message to all ‘other’ persons in the whole wide world.
2. Secondly, it orders the reader to ‘tell himself’ also so that his telling others only is not tantamount to hypocrisy.
3. Thirdly, it directs the reader to acknowledge that he has received the message.
4. Fourthly and most importantly, it mandates the reader to psychologically affirm his resolve by expressing his ‘state of mind’ such as ‘I will do this.’

The Holy Qor-aan                                         109:003                                لَآ أَعۡبُدُ مَا تَعۡبُدُونَ

  • تَعۡبُدُونَ — Tau-bo-doon — You worship (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person.  Who, what and how you all worship.  The person, the manner, the method or the way you appreciate, praise, serve and thank what you worship) *

* Note 109:003. The first set of words أَعۡبُدُ and تَعۡبُدُونَ are verbs, and عَـٰبِدُونَ is a noun; they imply how (the lines or the way) you and I worship. The second set of words عَابِدٌ۬ and عَـٰبِدُونَ are nouns and أَعۡبُدُ the verb; they show who you and I worship. The principal import of both these sets is somewhat overlapping. I worship the One and the Only One Almighty Allah and that includes a continuity, determination and resolution to keep on doing that. And you worship by appreciating, praising, serving and thanking things besides Allah whatever you choose such as the ancestral customs, false deities, superstitions, etc

  2. Secondly, the Olive era when the Prophet Noah on the 40th in his ark on the flood waters released a bird. The bird returned with a dry twig of an olive-tree in its beak. It became clear that the land was nearby, flood about to end, and man going to find peace.
  3. Thirdly, the Mount Sinai era when the Prophet Moses received the Ten Commandments, and mankind was set on way to become the Best of Beings by following the Book.
  4. Finally, the City of Peace (Muk-kuah) era where the Holy Prophet Mohammed s.a.w got the perfection of the Book, the completed Code and the Faith finished to its apex.

Such use of the words should be construed as their best effort done in good faith to convey the real intent of original text. No one word or phrase justifies criticizing others by pitching one combination against others as if they were any superior or inferior.

  • هَا — Haa — It (= pro., s., f., 3rd person. Refers to the human soul which like the sun controls all actions of a human being)

* Note 091:011. This Soorah invokes the testimony of many natural elements. Then it extends its theme to man’s inner-most mind, heart and soul that control his actions. Then it cites the illustration of a named nation which had violated the specified Prohibition. That nation had ruined itself by practicing precisely the prohibition laid out in this chapter. And verses 091:010 to 011 spell out the rule Universal Application that covers human life — even when separated from its theme, the evidence of natural elements and the example quoted.

The word اَفۡلَحَ (Uf-la-ha) used in 091:010 is a verb and its root reflects in its meanings an ‘accomplishment, achievement, success and winning’ that comes to all those who cleanse, purify, sanctify and set it on the path to keep growing.

The word خَابَ (Khaa-ba) used in 091:011 is a verb and its root reflects in its meaning the ‘destruction, ruin or utter failure’ that comes to all those who corrupt, damage, hurt or violate it.

Bothe the words اَفۡلَحَ (Uf-la-ha) and خَابَ (Khaa-ba) are followed by the pronoun هَا (haa) ‘her.’ It refers to the ‘aforesaid thing talked about’, which in instant case is the human soul. Like the sun that radiates light and heat and controls the earth, the soul of man initiates all his actions.
The phenomenon covers all categories of nations, tribes and families. The principle is applicable to all the geographical territories of region, countries and areas. The rule governs every culture, social value and law in which man and soul must live. It protects alike men and mothers, son and daughters, friends and wives, the whole society. The results may be good or bad based upon what one sows but he must reap his harvests. The rules of Universal Application have always been consistent and correct in consequence. Whoever follows or violates them or even attempts to do so receives his trophy or torment. Any apparent variance in the results is
short-lived and Truth comes as the final outcome. The stark reality is that one’s endeavors entail his success or ruin as he chose at the inception.

Note 108:004. This small Soorah has numerous interpretations and extrapolations. The history proved them right by showing examples of their materialization. The future promises repeating them time and again..

It is a forecast. Moslems who practice the teachings of the Holy Qor-aan were foretold to grow and multiply. Yet those who opposed those teachings diminished into extinction.

It is an assurance. The Holy Prophet s.a.w and his companions brutalized with extreme atrocities were assured of a bright brilliant future by following Islam and that proved true.

It is a script. All human beings can attain spiritual and temporal prowess by practicing the blissful teachings. Non-followers have always fallen to destruction and oblivion.

One of its purports lies in its four simple words: You, Abundance, Enemy and Childless.
1. ‘You’ refers to the Holy Prophet s.a.w as the primary addressee of this divine message. Secondary addressee is every Moslem, in fact every human being.
2. The ‘Abundance’ of good in the form of the Holy Qor-aan is what God gave. Anyone can enjoy the proliferating advantages of this Abundance by utilizing it.
3. The ‘enemy’ won’t see the value of this Abundance. His eyes are covered under his own veil of animosity. He will miss taking advantage of its unending benefits.
4. The enemy is destined to die ‘Childless’, like dead wood No one will succeed him. No one will perpetuate his legacy. No one will follow him or in next generation miss him
