  • الصَّيۡفِ‌ — Saif — Summer * (= The season with longer days and hot temperatures in the Southern parts of Arab countries from where folks travel north to cooler climate to escape the heat)

*Note 106:003. The Quo-raish were merchants who traded in the goods that reached the Muk-kah market. Among them before the advent of Islaam was a rich widow named Kho-de-ja who was a trader. In her business pursuits she was looking for an honest worker and heard of a truly honest person. She contacted Mohammed s.a.w who later was recognized in the world as the Holy Prophet s.a.w. She knew what goods had plenteous supply in the Muk-kah market and a great demand in the North. She also knew what goods had good supply in the North and a high demand in the Muk-kah market. So she hired him to take her goods from Muk-kah to the North and bring back northern merchandise. The profit from the round-trips and the honest account of all buying and selling dealings won her. She proposed to marry him and became his first wife.

Later on he invited his tribe as his initial audience for the delivery of his message. He professed that there was only One God and the 365 statutes in Kau-bah were not Gods. He told them not to worship the statutes one every day of the year as they were not Gods. Later on the revelation of this chapter they were reminded of previous incidents as evidence. This example was made perpetual as a lasting precedent to show how divine rules applied. This and the prior Soorah impress that when God blesses then people should acknowledge. The best way was and forever will remain is to express gratitude by worshiping One Allah.

Some translations have linked this Soorah as the result and the previous Soorah as the cause. They concluded that God destroyed the owners of elephants in order to benefit the tribe, Quo-raish. They further surmised that it was done to get the Quo-raish attached to summer and winter journeys.’ Such conclusion supports the assertion that some verses of the Holy Qor-aan have become obsolete. Punjab High Court of Pakistan investigated that assertion in its Judicial Inquiry and Report (1954). It recorded the testimony of Moslem scholars who claimed that its 800 verses or 20% were obsolete. Such a deduction would render the two Soorah to be merely a recording of a past historical event. Those scholars implied the contents of the two Soorah of little use today per Abrogation Theory . Every Command in the Holy Qor-aan is applicable to man today as it was the day it was revealed.

Indeed it was God’s blessing on Quo-raish to have been established as the ‘contemporary kings of trade’ through their year-long safe commercial travels. They were urged to be grateful. Logical extension of this precedent is to all humans. When God blesses people they should be grateful. It behooves them to make special effort to worship Him — by appreciating, thanking, extolling and praising Him.

* Note 097:002a: The Creator knew the best conduct for what He created the human being. He spread that conduct appropriately in all His divine Rules of Universal Application. He destined, designed, dispatched and provided the rules for all human beings to follow. He laid, lowered and poured down the rules on the individuals He considered trustworthy. He inspired His divine message in His messengers, prophets, sages, saints and many holy men. That process is best described by the verb entrusted as the recipients get the word as a trust. Initially each recipient implements the entrusted directions by himself the best way he can. Gradually they spread the teachings when no occasion has yet arisen to create a precedent. Personally, each sets up examples for the public to see how the command received is obeyed. Slowly they preach the message to their families and immediate listeners as their audience. Eventually they succeed in tutoring and training the disciples to spread the word all around. Evangelically the message like The Islam reaches their nations and then the whole wide world. This illustrates how all aspects of human life are covered by predetermined Will of God.

** Note 097:002b.  The revelation of the Holy Qor-aan was spread over 23 years.  So, the mention here of its revelation ‘in’ the one night of لَيۡلَةِ الۡقَدۡرِ  has been interpreted, and quite differently because the Arabic word  فِىۡ  has several possible meanings including the following.

  • Most interpreters have translated this word for the purposes of this verse as “during, in, inside the middle of an event, time, place, people or situation.” They thus interpreted that the revelation of the Holy Qor-aan was ‘begun’ and ‘completed’ in this one night.
  • Some others have interpreted it to mean that the arch-angel Gabriel visited the Holy Prophet s.a.w.,  in this one night every year and repeated, refreshed and rehearsed all that had been revealed until that time. The last and final review of the whole Qor-aan was accomplished in said night of the last Ramdhan of the 23rd year. So, they interpreted that the revelation of the Holy Qor-aan ‘begun’ in this one night was also ‘completed’ in the same night 23 years later.
  • Another possible interpretation is that the whole of the Qor-aan was revealed on the Holy Prophet s.a.w., in this one night. Thereafter and for 23 years it was revealed again and again piece-meal as the circumstances warranted immediate application of some of the Commandments then provided.
  • The believers professing in the ‘miraculous’ nature of the Holy Qor-aan insist that the revelation of the Holy Qor-aan was aimed at ending the period of spiritual darkness – after which the spiritual daylight was scheduled to spread in and shine the world. The word  فِىۡ  in this context makes most sense by interpreting it as “regarding, concerning, for the sake of, in reference to; relative to, in the matter of, or in relation to.”  In line with the next verse, such interpretation of this verse appears pretty broad and most plausible.

Islam -101

ISLAM – 101

The Holy Qor-aan established Islam. Its secure (085 023) written words can’t be changed since it sender Almighty God guaranteed its protection (015:010). Its clear, concise and correct message for humans also needs no change (Commentary Repetitions in the Holy Qor-aan have benefits). No doubt the evolving nature of man both friends and foes have attempted to change its crux in so many ways but as foretold by it have failed and will always fail.

Islam is a word that its mention makes some people wild with devotion or frenzy which is difficult to control, explain or justify.   The Holy Qor-aan in its verses 003:020 and 003:086 has called this religion as الۡاِسۡلَامُ (Ul-Isslaam).   That Book was revealed to the Prophet Mohammed s.a.w by messages that Angel Gabriel brought.   It was like God’s messages sent to Moses in the form of Torah and to Jesus as contained in Bible.   The revelation of the Holy Qor-aan started when he s.a.w was 40 and lived in the town Makkah.   The revelations went on for 10 years in Makkah and the last 13 in Madina where he had migrated.   The Holy Qor-aan calls the believers in Islam as Moslems, Followers, Obedient, Worshipers, etc.

The westernization including that by some Moslems have transliterated this Arabic word to sound so bizarre.   The first syllable ISS of Islam is spelled in such a way that it is pronounced as IZ.   The second syllable LAAM of Islam is spelled in such a way that it is pronounced as in bat, cat or sat.   The accurate pronunciation of the first syllable demanded that it be spelled as in the words bliss, hiss, kiss and miss.   Even on Morning shows (Last Sunday of November 2015) the word MOSLEM was repeatedly pronounced as MUZ-LIM.   Why so much emphasis to spell the words correctly?   Because presently this site can only show the correct pronunciation of a word in print.   Phonetically accurate pronunciation requires that the word is transliterated as Isslaam [the first syllable as ISS like it is in the words brass, class, bliss, hiss. kiss and miss, and the second as LAAM like it is in the words hard, fall, hall].

The Arabic root  س ل م (Seen Laam Meem) carries inherently the meanings of peace.   It is similar to the Hebrew word ‘shalom’.   One noun from the said root is Salaam meaning peace.   The word Salaam when pre-fixed with the Arabic alphabets Alif and Laam became Al-Islam and meant The Religion of Peace, The Peaceful Life-Style or The way to provide peace and live with peace.   Ul-Islam or Al-Islam is commonly abbreviated as Islam. This site has interchangeably used all spellings (Isslaam, Islaam, Islam, Al-Islam and Ul-Islam) due to the following reasons.
a) The need to correctly spell Isslaam for its phonetically accurate pronunciation.
b) The need to enable an on-line research on Islam for the content on this site.
c) The need to provide the exact quotes with spellings different from American English.

The Holy Qor-aan has 30 Parts (each also called a Jooz or Separa) with 114 Chapters (each called a Soorah with a specific name).   In its about 6,340 verses of commandments, prohibitions, historical narrations, comprehensive teachings, reasons and arguments it has provided guidance that cumulatively is called the الۡاِسۡلَامُ (Ul-Isslaam).  It fundamentally is a lifestyle that the Creator knew would suit Mankind the best.   It revolves around the concept of the Unity of God, personified in one word Allah.

BELIEFS required by Islam are that in order to be a Moslem one must believe (See verses 002:178 and 002:286) as follows.

  1. Belief in Allah.
  2. Belief in the Angels.
  3. Belief in His Messengers (Prophets)
  4. Belief in the Books (Scriptures) He has sent.
  5. Belief in the Latter Day (Resurrection or Judgment)

Some sects have added Divine Preordainments (See the Translation of verse 064:012 by  M Mohsin Khan and M Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali have added) as the 6th Mandatory Beliefs.

It covers every aspect of human life including the following. Character.   Children.   Charity.   Commandments.   Compensations.   Conduct.   Conflicts (of laws, nations and religious doctrines).   Crime and punishment.   Defense.   Democracy.   Divorce.   Drinking.   Education.   Forgiveness.   Gambling.   Giving.   Gods.   Happiness.   History.   Honesty.   Houses of worship.   Infidels.   Immigration.   Inheritance.   Integrity.   Law of war (Jihad and the right of private defense).   Law of Personal Relationships including detailed rights and obligation of spouses, child-raising, even the unborn.   Laws of property, inheritance and distribution.   Leadership.   Leniency.   Lying.   Marriage.  Media.   Minorities.   Modern Inventions.   Mosques.   Nations.   Obligations.   Orphans.   Peace.   Poor.   Prayers.   Prohibitions.   Prophecies.   Prophets (from Adam, Noah, Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Hood, Lot, Moses, Jesus, Mohammed and others).   Religions.   Sacrifice.   Satan.   Science.   Sick.   Society.   Statesmanship.   Tribal system. Truth.  Unity of God.   Vices.   War.   Women.

WORSHIPS (see our Commentary titled as “Islam – 104 – 5 Acts of worships or pillars of Islam“) are as follows.
1. Professing belief by the word of mouth expressed all the time.
2. Praying at least five times daily.
3. Paying as charity a part of the earnings received whether daily, weekly or monthly.
4. Properly fasting for one lunar month in every year.
5. Performing Hujj at least once in a lifetime

Some sects have added Jihad as the 6th Mandatory Worship

The Holy Prophet s.a.w is reported to have said that ‘The Difference of Opinion in my followers will ensure them a lasting life.’   Difference of opinion sprang up within minutes after his demise and resulted in electing his 1st Caliph.   That difference in opinion contributed in the subsequent murders of 2nd, 3rd and 4th Caliph in Isslaam.   The academic rift among the scholars resulted in establishing major rival Sunni and Shiite schools.   Each school in the next fourteen centuries then got sub-divided into several sects, and sub-sects.   Each sub-sect flourished when controlled by clergy who took the title Imam, Khaleefah or Moolla.    Each sub-sect grew muscle when patronized by a general, king, dictator or power-hungry politician.   Mostly the clergy led in labeling others as infidels worthy of being killed or waged war on them.    The Commentary  The Holy Qor-aan and Different Translations  shows how small differences started.  The wrangling by word of mouth and wars has distorted the facts and today the Truth must be found.   Required now is the study, research, prayers and divine guidance to reach and reveal what is Ialam.   And that is the mission of this site where all visitors are urged to spend time and explore its content.

Almost every one of the aforesaid aspects of human life have been debated, differed and disputed. The conflicting opinions by the religious leaders have developed serious issues. One result is the formation of untold number of schools or sects (See Law – Islam and Sect Formation and Law – Islam and Sect Recognition). Religious fervor turning into violence like Sunni-Shia animosity and Iran-Iraq war in 20th Century has continued throughout past fifteen centuries. The trend to use force, national administrations and persistent persecution appears escalating. Laws against Ahmadis promulgated in Pakistan, Saudi Arab, Uganda and Bangladesh are the latest example of religious fanaticism.

This site is dedicated to point towards the Truth, the whole Truth, and nothing but the Truth – the Truth about the Holy Qor-aan and Isslaam, Islaam, Islam, Al-Islam, Ul-Islam or any way the word is spelled  (or misspelled).  That is why the following steps are suggested.

The Holy Qor-aan                                          105:001                                      ○بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ‏‏

Bis-mil-laa-hir-rah-maa-nir-ra-heem

With the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful I begin.

(Beginning, commencing, starting)

  • بِ — B(is) –With (= This Arabic word literally means ‘with’. Its translation in English is more accurate with ‘with’ than with ‘in’)
  • سۡمِ — M(il) –The name of (= The way to be addressed or called)
  • اللهِ — Laa-h(ir) –Allah (= The Almighty God; the One Only worthy of worship)
  • الرَّحۡمٰنِ — Rah-maa-n(ir) — The Most Beneficent (= The One who fully; totally and wholly benefits all fully and to the maximum with no condition, limitation or restriction. Compassionate. Gracious)
  • الرَّحِيۡمِ — Ra-heem — The Most Merciful (= The One who fully, totally and wholly showers mercy again and again to the maximum continually, indefinitely and perpetually like the endlessly incoming waves from the oceans)

The Holy Qor-aan                                        105:002                           أَلَمۡ تَرَ كَيۡفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِأَصۡحَـٰبِ ٱلۡفِيلِ

Alum-tara-kaifa-fa-aa-la-rubbo-ka-bay-us-haa-bil-feel

Didn’t you  see what your God did with the owners of elephants?

  • اَ — Aa — Have (= Word asking a question like are, can, could, do, did, have, had, shell, should, will, would, what, etc.)
  • لَمۡ — Laum — Not (= Absolutely never; no, not at all; nothing)
  •  تَرَ — Ta-ra — You looked (= v., past., pl., 2nd person. Looked; observed; pondered; seen; viewed; watched; witnessed. See Note 002:244a)A/t/a ‘bethink ye’)
  • كَيۡفَ — Kai-fa — What (= How; what manner or method; which way)
  • فَعَلَ — Fa-aa-la — Did (= Dealt; treated; reacted)
  • رَبُّ — Rub-bo — God (= The Almighty Allah who fills needs of all creatures;
Creator; Guardian; Master; Lord Provident. The Only One Who provides all that sustains life. Ultimate Provider of air, water, food and whatever we and all other creatures need to live and subsist)
  • كَ — Ka — You (= pro., s., m., 2nd person. You single male. The addressee of this divine message is initially the Holy Prophet s.a.w and secondarily every Moslem, in fact every human being. See the Note under 002:005)
  • بِ — Bay — With (= Literal translation and best sense conveyed is ‘with’)
  • أَصۡحَـٰبِ — Us-haa-b(il) — Owners (= pl, Army; controllers; masters; possessors. For other meanings of this word, see 002:082 and 002:083)
  • ٱلۡفِيلِ — Feel — Elephants (= Huge animal with thick skin and big-wide four feet that were used by the medieval armies to trample over enemy soldiers without being greatly hurt and damaged by their arrows, spear and swords)

* Note 105:002a. A simple straight forward translation of this verse includes all readers as its addressees. Historically, an army riding elephants came under the command of Abraha who was the viceroy in Yemen under Abyssinian King Negus who amassed the elephants as an undefeatable instrument of war. Dr Khan correctly stated that ‘The Elephant Army which came from Yemen under the command of Abrahah Al-Ashram intending to destroy the Kau-bah in the town of Muk-kah‘ — but he translated the operative verb to only ‘O Mohammad’ and so narrowed down the scope of this word and verse to only one person. No wonder some Moslem sects believe that nearly 20% of the Holy Qor-aan had become non-practicable — Report by Punjab High Court. See 106:002 and our Commentary titled as Abrogation Theory. Such translations, implications, assertions or conclusions are totally unwarranted. Not a word, clause, verse, message or teachings of the Holy Qor-aan has or ever will become obsolete.

** Note 105:002b. The first eight words of the verse 089:007 and 105:002 are exactly the same.

(===)

The Holy Qor-aan                                         105:003                                       أَلَمۡ يَجۡعَلۡ كَيۡدَهُمۡ فِى تَضۡلِيلٍ۬

Alum-yuj-ul-kai-da-hoom-fee-tudz-leel

Did He not turn their evil plan in a total disaster?

  • لَمۡ — Lum — Not (= Never; no, not at all)
  • يَجۡعَلۡ — Yuj-ul — Make (= Cause; convert; destroy; foil; reduce; render; ruin; turn) *

  • فِىۡ — Fee — Into (= 1. Concerning; in the matters of; in reference to; regarding; relative to. 2. During; duration; inside the duration of an event, time, period, place or thing)
  •  تَضۡلِيلٍ۬ — Tudz-leel — Total disaster (= Absolute disaster; destroy; foil; gone astray; loss; utter failure; lost in confusion; miscarry; brought to naught)

* Note 105:003. The basic root (the  three letters ج ع ل ) involves  the meaning of actively taking steps to make a change – for the better or worse as the doer intends. The derivative word يَجۡعَلۡ used in this verse (105:003) is grammatically present-participle; in the instant context it conveys and shows Almighty God’s universal rule to eventually down and defeat the terribly the rude and crude ruffians. The derivative word جَعَلَ from the aforesaid root used in the verse (105:006) below is past tense grammatically that conveys as shown by the context that Almighty God’s actually did defeat and destroy terribly the rough, ruffian, rude and crude army that had come with the evil intent to demolish Kau-bah under an illusion that such a demolition would end the people from coming there for a pilgrimage.

Reproduced:

  * Note 002:040. The word خٰلِدُوۡنَ  literally means they will ‘abide, dwell, live, remain, stay or reside for a long time’.  It has been used in several verses including 002:026, 002:040, 002:082, 002:218, 002:258 and 002:276.  It has been also been used in a different format as the [خٰلِدِيۡنَ فِيۡهَا  ] among other places in 002:163, 059:018, 098:007 and 098:009.

Scholars including A Yusuf Ali and Dr Hilali, Dr Khan have added the word ‘forever’ in translating this word.  So the concept for a long time in the meanings of this word was replaced by forever.  Such addition appears to be right in case of ‘Heavens’ or ‘Paradise’ as the reward to the righteous for doing good deeds in this life is known to be forever and perpetual.

But attaching words like forever, perpetual or everlasting to Hell, Hell-Fire or Purgatory as a punishment for doing wrongs in this life is quite different.  Many scholars have maintained  that any human addition, extension, extrapolation, minimization or subtraction to the simple and straightforward meanings of the original text due to any spiritual or temporal, social or cultural, or punitive or reformative consideration is NOT warranted.   Additionally, adding the concept of ‘forever’ to the “punishment for wrongs done in this temporary life on earth” runs counter to the Ahaadeeth – the reports attributing quotations to the Holy Prophet, s.a.w, like A day will come when the gates of hell will flap and flutter in the wind” which imply the following.

  • That the fires of hell would have died and there would be no more need to guard its gates.
  • That all people sent there initially would have finished serving their punishments as the sentences for their wrongs done in this life.
  • That people after due correction [as in a Correction Facility] or cure [as in a Hospital] would have finally become fit to be admitted to the Paradise.
  • See also 002:168 in the translation of the word خٰرِجِيۡنَ [ Kha-ray-jee-na = Those coming out and exiting]
