The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                  084:001 to 006

Verses of the Holy Qor-aan are quoted on this site with the numbers, the first set of three being the number of Soorah (Chapter) followed by the last set of three being the number of the verse. The numbers include بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ‏‏ as the verse #1 in every Soorah except the Soorah #9. The original Arabic word is shown first, or in Col #1. The phonetic transliteration in English is shown next, or in Col #2, and is based upon words commonly pronounced like bat, cat, sat → fate, gate, hate → bait, trait → bay, nay, say → be, he, she → bet, pet, wet → bit, fit, sit → cot, dot, rot → boot, hoot, root → bout, rout → but, cut, hut, ultimatum. The English equivalent to the Arabic words (shown first, or in Col #1) are provided next, or in Col #3. Some other alternates in English used in other translations are given last, or in Col #4.

Chapter # 84                                     Soora-tool-In-she-quaq                     سُوۡرَةُ الانشقاق

بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ
اِذَا السَّمَآءُ انْشَقَّتۡۙۙ‏‏○ وَاَذِنَتۡ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتۡۙۙ○ وَاِذَا الۡاَرۡضُ مُدَّتۡ ۙ‏ؕ‏ ○ وَاَلۡقَتۡ مَا فِيۡهَا وَتَخَلَّتۡۙۙ‏‏○ وَاَذِنَتۡ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتۡ ؕ‏○ يٰۤاَيُّهَا الۡاِنۡسَانُ اِنَّكَ كَادِحٌ اِلٰى رَبِّكَ كَدۡحًا فَمُلٰقِيۡه ۚ ○ فَاَمَّا مَنۡ اُوۡتِىَ كِتٰبَهٗ بِيَمِيۡنِهٖ ۙ‏ ○ فَسَوۡفَ يُحَاسَبُ حِسَابًا يَّسِيۡرًا ۙ‏ ○ وَّيَنۡقَلِبُ اِلٰٓى اَهۡلِهٖ مَسۡرُوۡرًا ؕ‏ ○ وَاَمَّا مَنۡ اُوۡتِىَ كِتٰبَهٗ وَرَآءَ ظَهۡرِهٖ ۙ‏ ○ فَسَوۡفَ يَدۡعُوۡا ثُبُوۡرًا ۙ‏ ○ وَّيَصۡلٰى سَعِيۡرًا ؕ‏ ○ اِنَّهٗ كَانَ فِىۡۤ اَهۡلِهٖ مَسۡرُوۡرًا ؕ‏ ○ اِنَّهٗ ظَنَّ اَنۡ لَّنۡ يَّحُوۡرَ ۛۚ‏ ○ بَلٰٓى ۛۚ اِنَّ رَبَّهٗ كَانَ بِهٖ بَصِيۡرًا ؕ‏ ○ فَلَاۤ اُقۡسِمُ بِالشَّفَقِ ۙ‏ ○ وَالَّيۡلِ وَمَا وَسَقَ ۙ‏ ○ وَالۡقَمَرِ اِذَا اتَّسَقَ ۙ‏ ○ لَتَرۡكَبُنَّ طَبَقًا عَنۡ طَبَقٍ ؕ‏○ فَمَا لَهُمۡ لَا يُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ ۙ‏ ○ وَاِذَا قُرِئَ عَلَيۡهِمُ الۡقُرۡاٰنُ لَا يَسۡجُدُوۡنَ ؕ ۩‏ ○ بَلِ الَّذِيۡنَ كَفَرُوۡا يُكَذِّبُوۡنَ ۖ‏ ○ وَاللّٰهُ اَعۡلَمُ بِمَا يُوۡعُوۡنَ ۖ○ ‏ فَبَشِّرۡهُمۡ بِعَذَابٍ اَلِيۡمٍ ۙ‏ ○ اِلَّا الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا وَعَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ لَهُمۡ اَجۡرٌ غَيۡرُ مَمۡنُوۡنٍ‏

16. Ba-laa-in-na-rub-ba-hoo-kaa-na-bay-he-ba-see-raa
17. Fa-la-ooq-say-mo-bish-sha-fa-qay
18. Wul-lai-lay-wa-maa-wa-sa-qa
19. Wul-qa-ma-ray-ezut-ta-sa-qa
20. La-tur-ka-boon-na-ta-ba-qun-un-ta-ba-qin
21. Fa-maa-la-hoom-laa-yoe-me-noon

23. Ba-lil-la-zee-na-ka-fa-roo-yo-kuz-zay-boon

1. With the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful I begin.
2. When the sky has split
3. And has listened to her God and justifiably
4. And when the earth has expanded
5. And has delivered all inside her and emptied herself clean
6. And has listened to her God and justifiably
7. Listen, you Man, if you really work hard to reach you God, then you will meet Him
8. So as for him who is given his book in his right hand
9. So he will soon receive an easy reckoning
10. And he will return to his family happy.
11. And as far him who is given his record from behind his back
12. So he will soon cry for his own destruction
13. And he will enter in flaming fire.
14. Surely he used to be happy in his family
15. Surely he believed that things would never change
16. Indeed. Really his God has always watched over him.
17. So I certainly swear by the twilight
18. By the night and all what it covers
19. And the moon when it has grown full
20. Certainly you will move from stage to stage
21. So what is with them that they do not believe
22. And when the Qor-aan is read to them they do not prostrate.

PROSTATE here

23. Really those who disbelieved reject that
24. And Allah knows best what they hide in their minds
25. So inform them with the news of a painful punishment
26. Except those who believed and performed good deeds. For them the reward is without an end.

The Holy Qor-aan                                         084:001                                  ○بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ‏‏

Bis-mil-laa-hir-rah-maa-nir-ra-heem

With the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful I begin

(Beginning, commencing, starting)

  • الرَّحِيۡمِ — Ra-heem — The Most Merciful (= The One who fully, totally and wholly showers mercy, to the maximum, again and again, continually, indefinitely and perpetually like the endlessly incoming waves from the oceans)

When the sky has split

Wa-aa-zay-nut-lay-rub-bay-haa-wa-hooq-qut

And has listened to her God and justifiably

The Holy Qor-aan                                         084:017                                           ○ فَلَاۤ اُقۡسِمُ بِالشَّفَقِ ۙ‏

                Fa-la-ooq-say-mo-bish-sha-fa-qay

               So I certainly swear by the twilight

                 Wul-qa-ma-ray-ezut-ta-sa-qa

                And the moon when it has grown full

                 La-tur-ka-boon-na-ta-ba-qun-un-ta-ba-qin

                Certainly you will move from stage to stage

  • لَ — La — Certainly (= Absolutely; assuredly; definitely; doubtlessly; indeed; earnestly; in all seriousness; in all sincerity; positively; really; surely; truly; verily)
  • تَرۡكَبُنَّ — Tur-ka-boon-na — Move * (= March; journey; pass on; ride; travel)
  • طَبَقًا — Ta-ba-qun — Stage (= Level in the evolutionary process; plane to plane; stage to stage; state to state)
  • عَنۡ — Un — From (= About; concerning; regarding; relative to)
  • طَبَقٍ — Ta-ba-qin — Stage (= Level in the evolutionary process; plane to plane; stage to stage; state to state)

*  Note 084:020. This word has been translated in many ways and some of them are directly opposed to others.
1. Moving upwards – One set conveyed ‘ascending, developing, evolving, growing or improving into next better stage.’ M Muhammad Ali and M Zafrulla Khan did that.
2. Moving downwards – Another set conveyed ‘deteriorating down to the next lower stage’ based upon the two verses that follow this verse, 084:020. Many translations did that
3. Moving sideways – Another set translated it with ‘pass on’ and covered both sides. Maulawi Sher Ali did that.

The Holy Qor-aan                                         084:021                                          ○ فَمَا لَهُمۡ لَا يُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ ۙ‏

               Fa-maa-la-hoom-laa-yoe-me-noon

               So what is with them that they do not believe

  • فَ — Fa — So (= Consequently; as a result; so; then; thus; therefore; yet)
  • مَاۤ — Maa — What (= Whatever; whatsoever. What ails. What is the matter. What is wrong with them)
  • لَ — La — With (= Concerning. Regarding. Relative to. For the attention, benefit, purpose or reason of. With regard to)
  • ھُمۡ‌ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl, .m., 3rd person. Refers to aforesaid persons moving up or down from one stage to another)
  • لَا — Laa — Do not (= Absolute denial; never; not at all; total negation)
  • يُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ — Yoe-me-noon — They believe (= v. Accept or enter faith. Follow the Holy Qor-aan, the Islaam and become Moslems)

  • الۡقُرۡاٰنُ — Qor-aa-no — Qor-aan (= The Book to be read again and again, repeatedly. See Commentaries titled “The Holy Qor-aan, The Most Read Book In The World” and “The Holy Qor-aan is no joke“)
  • لَا  — Laa — Do not (= Absolute denial; never; not at all; total negation)
  • يَسۡجُدُوۡنَ — Yus-jo-doon — Prostrate (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person, Action in worship wherein one prostrates with his head down and forehead on the ground expressing humility, obedience and reverence. Adore God. Bow down, kneel and put head on floor in prayer and submission. A/t/a, ‘Prostrate themselves in adoration’

               Ba-lil-la-zee-na-ka-fa-roo-yo-kuz-zay-boon

               Really those who disbelieved reject that

  • بَلِ — Ba…( lil) — Really (= Aye; nay; but the truth is; however; instead; of course; nevertheless; on the contrary; rather; truthfully; the fact is; verily; yea but; yes indeed)
  • الَّذِيۡنَ — La-zee-na — Those who (= pl., m, 3rd person. Ref is to the disbelievers)
  • كَفَرُوۡا — Ka-fa-roo — Disbelieved (= v., pl., 1. Denied, refused or rejected faith or belief in Allah, the Holy Qor-aan & Islaam to become Moslem. 2. Became faithless, heretics, infidels, non-believers, resistors to God or unbelievers. 3. Acted ungratefully by failing to appreciate, thank for, use or utilize God’s
    given abilities, blessings, capabilities, capacities, gifts, opportunities and talents by their abuse and misuse)
  • يَكۡذِبُوۡنَ —  Y0-kuz-zay-boon — Reject (= Deny, falsify, misstate, practice hypocrisy, tell lies and keep disbelieving the Holy Qor-aan and the Holy Prophet s.a.w)

The Holy Qor-aan                                         084:024                                      ○    وَاللّٰهُ اَعۡلَمُ بِمَا يُوۡعُوۡنَ

                Wul-laa-ho-au-la-mo-bay-maa-you-oon

                And Allah is Well Aware of what they hide in their minds.

  • وَ — Wa…(ul) — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally)
  • اللّٰهُ — Laa-ho — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)

  • بِمَا — Bay-maa — Because (= Combination of two words. بِ means ‘with / in’ and مَاۤ means ‘all that, whatever, whatsoever or whenever.’ The combination بِمَا (be-maa) means ‘because of; on account of; for the reason; due to; with / in all that’)
  • يُوۡعُوۡنَ — You-oon — Hide in minds (= Falsely and secretly conceal, cover and cling in their heart, mind and soul. A/t/a gather or accumulate)

                 Fa-baush-shir-hoom-bay-azaa-bin-aleem

                Then inform them with the news of a painful punishment

  • بَشِّر — Baush-shir — Inform * (= Announce, give, inform, make aware, proclaim, share, state or tell a news, story or tiding)

  • اَلِيۡمٍ — Aleem — Painful (= Grievous; painful; severe; stern)

* Note 084:025. This word conveys a “congratulation for good, glad and happy news.” The same word also conveys a “warning about a grievous, painful, severe or woeful situation.” The context shows which of the two directly opposed meanings it conveyed in a particular case. The phrase ‘painful punishment’ following this word shows that here the 2nd alternative is meant.

اِلَّا الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا وَعَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ لَهُمۡ اَجۡرٌ غَيۡرُ مَمۡنُوۡن

               

Il-lul-la-zee-na-aa-ma-noo-wa-aa-me-loos-suaa-le-haa-tay                                                      La-hoom-uj-roon-ghai-room-mum-noon.

Except those who believed and practiced proper acts                                              For them the reward is without an end *

Holy Qor-aan has used often the “Phrase Aa-ma-noo …” in next five (5) words

  • الَّذِيۡن – La-zee-na — Those (= pl., m, 3rd person. Refers to the Believers)
  • اٰمَنُوۡا — Aa-ma-noo — They Believed  (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Believed in the Holy Qor-aan; became Moslems; entered in Islam. See Note 002:026c and our Commentaries Islam – 101 and BELIEVE and DISBELIEVE)   
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • عَمِلُوا — Aa-may-loo(s) — Practiced (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Acted; carried out; did; kept up; followed; led; lived out; performed; practiced; pursued; persisted in; strived. The Holy Qor-aan has used both verbs  اٰمَنُوۡا  and  عَمِلُوا  in the past tense but many authors inaccurately translated them in the present tense or as noun [O ye who believe; one author as ‘Believers’] as shown in Note 002:026c  )
  • الصّٰلِحٰتِ — Sua-lay-haa-tay — Proper acts (= n., pl., Appropriate, befitting, correct, decent, fit, good, holy, honorable, moral, pious, proper, respectable, right righteous, upright, virtuous or worthy acts, activities, deeds, manners, operations, practices, performances, pursuits or righteousness or works. Righteous actions which are appropriate in manner, time and place — not the likes of a soldier who stands up for a prayer during a sword-fighting battle for life and death)
  • لَ — La — For (= For the benefit, object, purpose or reason of; with intent to)
  • ھُمۡ‌ — Hoom — Them  (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Points to the Believers)
  • اَجۡرٌ — Uj-ro — Reward (= Consequence; outcome; recompense; result. Paradise)
  • غَيۡرُ — Ghai-ro — Without (= Besides; not; other than; out of)
  • مَمۡنُوۡنٍ — Mum-noon — End (= Bounds; cut off; limits; severances. This word when combined with the previous word mean everlasting; perpetual; unending; unfailing; never failing)

* * Note 084:026.   But for one letter فَ (that comes after the words عَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ and before the words لَهُمۡ in 095:007)  the verses 084:026 and 095:007 are repeats. Both deliver an identical message.

Praying for others

as a prelude to the following prayers)

PRAYING  FOR  OTHERS 

The 110:001 starts with God’s names, counts the blessings of God’s help, victory and increasing numbers of followers entering Islam in successive waves, and then directs to ‘Seek forgiveness.‘

The Commands in the Holy Qor-aan are addressed to several persons, some to the mankind, some to the believers, and some addressed to ‘كَ, the pronoun for a single, male, 2nd person.’

The initial addressee in 2nd person is the Holy Prophet s.a.w.  However, secondarily anyone who reads and practices said teachings must obey the Commands. See the note under 002:005.

The direction in the word اسۡتَغۡفِرۡ  that literally means ‘Seek forgiveness’ was principally addressed to the Holy Prophet s.a.w but merits to be practiced by all his followers, really all human beings.

Prophets are known to exemplify the revelations to them.  That is why the interpretation has been to ‘Seek forgiveness’ for others who join in waves in regard to their human shortcomings.

However, enormously broader meanings are to “Implore forgiveness for not only yourself but also for all those who already have joined you and those behind who have yet to join you in regard to all their human frailties and shortcomings.”

The concept was well-worded by Dr Majid Ali in a poem that can be translated as follows.

                         The Greatness of the Great God (Azam) is for everyone                                                                The worship of His worshiper (Abid) is also for everyone.

Indeed the prayers and worship of a true worshiper are for all – for everyone and not just anyone.  The Great Glorious God mandated the Holy Prophet s.a.w to do that to benefit all.  He directed him s.a.w with the “You Say” specifically and singularly as an Abid (109:005).  He labeled His bondsmen as Qao-min Aabedeen (a nation of those who are Abid) (021:107).  He declared him s.a.w as the “Blessing and Mercy for all those in the Universe” (021:108).  He entrusted all of the followers of the Holy Prophet s.a.w with that responsibility (002:005). He had set up a similar reward (and the duty) in the Zaboor (the Book of David) and the Zikr (the Book of Moses) that His servants will ‘inherit the land’ meaning  rule the world (021:106).

In fact the last word of the verse 110:006  makes the aforesaid meanings even more clear.  The meanings of the words from the Arabic root of التَّوَّابُ are so vast and varied that they can’t be compressed or condensed in a word or phrase in English.  They imply BESEECHING for 1) forgiveness, 2) recovery, 3) reversal, 4) rewards better than those sought even when the acts seeking them prove to be mistakes and 5) the Almighty God generously forgiving all mistakes and granting all that was initially requested in the prayers (002:038 and 002:055).

The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                  085:001 to 010

Verses of the Holy Qor-aan are quoted on this site with the numbers, the first set of three being the number of Soorah (Chapter) followed by the last set of three being the number of the verse. The numbers include بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ‏‏ as the verse #1 in every Soorah except the Soorah #9. The original Arabic word is shown first, or in Col #1. The phonetic transliteration in English is shown next, or in Col #2, and is based upon words commonly pronounced like bat, cat, sat → fate, gate, hate → bait, trait → bay, nay, say → be, he, she → bet, pet, wet → bit, fit, sit → cot, dot, rot → boot, hoot, root → bout, rout → but, cut, hut, ultimatum. 9. And they the persecutors did not hate them the believers except for that they believed in Allah, the Mightiest, the Most Praiseworthy
10. For Whom is the sovereignty of Heaven and Earth. By God Allah is a witness to all things.
11. Certainly those who oppressed the believing men and women, then do not repent, then for them is the punishment of Hell and for them is the punishment of burning.
12. Certainly those who believed and practiced righteousness, for them are gardens beneath which rivers flow. That is the greatest triumph.
13. Most certainly the seizure by your God is very strong and severe.
14. Surely Only He creates and repeats creating
15. And He is the Most Forgiving, Most Loving
16. Master of the most Glorious Throne
17. The doer of what He intends.
18. Has come to you the report of the armies
19. Of Pharaoh and Thamood?
20. Really they all disbelieved, excelling in the denial of Truth.
21. And Allah will encompass from behind them.
22. Really this is the Glorious Book – read again and again
23. In a safe and secure template.

Dr Al-Hilali and Dr Khan referred شَاهِدٍ to the “Witnessing day, the Friday'” and مَشۡهُوۡدٍ to the “Witnessed Day, i.e., the day of Arafah (Hujj) the ninth of Dhul-Hijjah.” 2. Allamah Nooruddin referred شَاهِدٍ to the Holy Prophet s.a.w and مَشۡهُوۡدٍ to his community.

* Note 085:005. Burning dissidents on stakes for opposing established religion has been one old practice. Abraham for that reason was ordered to be put on fire that was extinguished by timely divine dictate. Mediaeval Europe witnessed many lives sacrificed at the stakes for exactly that deplorable reason. The Jewish King of Yemen Zu-Nuwas persecuted Christians of Najran by burning them on pits. That was “In the generation immediately preceding the Prophet’s birth in 570” wrote A Yusuf Ali. And today in the 21st century the ISIS in Iraq is burning the people of religions other than theirs. Islam prohibits such atrocities and actually protects the rights of minorities to practice their faith. The teachings of the Holy Qor-aan such as in this verse apply to all mankind for all times to come. See our several Commentaries that start with the word ‘Qor-aan’ on this site.

As a forecast, the word descries for the believers in the Holy Qor-aan and the followers of Islam that like the earlier Men of Faith they too must be prepared for tough times ahead)
  • شُهُوۡدٌ — Sho-hoo-d — Witnesses (= Observers; onlookers; watches; watchers)

○ وَمَا نَقَمُوۡا مِنۡهُمۡ اِلَّاۤ اَنۡ يُّؤۡمِنُوۡا بِاللّٰهِ الۡعَزِيۡزِ الۡحَمِيۡدِ  ۙ‏

               Wa-maa-na-qa-moo-min-hoom-il-la-un-yoe-may-noo-bil-laa-hil-azee-zil-ha-meed

               And they the persecutors did not hate them the believers except for the reason that they believed in Allah, the Mightiest, the Most Praiseworthy

الَّذِىۡ لَهٗ مُلۡكُ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالۡاَرۡضِ‌ؕ وَ اللّٰهُ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَىۡءٍ شَهِيۡدٌ ○ ؕ‏

               Ul-la-zee-la-hoo-mool-koos-sa-maa-waa-tay-wul-eardz–wul-laa-ho-alaa-kool-lay-shai-in-sha-heed

              For (= belonging to) Whom is the sovereignty of the Heavens and the Earth. By God Allah is a witness over all things.

  • لَ — La — For (= Belonging. For the attention, benefit, purpose or reason of. With intent to. With the object of)

اِنَّ الَّذِيۡنَ فَتَـنُوا الۡمُؤۡمِنِيۡنَ وَ الۡمُؤۡمِنٰتِ ثُمَّ لَمۡ يَتُوۡبُوۡا فَلَهُمۡ عَذَابُ جَهَنَّمَ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابُ الۡحَرِيۡقِؕ

                In-nul-la-zee-na-fa-ta-nool-moe-me-nee-na-wul-moe-me-naa-tay-thoom-ma-lum-ya-too-boo-fa-la-hoom-azaa-bo-ja-hun-na-ma-wa-la-hoom-azaa-bool-ha-ree-q.

               Certainly those who oppressed the believing men and women, then do not repent, then for them is the punishment of Hell and for them is the punishment of burning.

اِنَّ الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا وَعَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ لَهُمۡ جَنّٰتٌ تَجۡرِىۡ مِنۡ تَحۡتِهَا الۡاَنۡهٰرُ ؕؔ ذٰلِكَ الۡفَوۡزُ الۡكَبِيۡرُ○ ؕ‏

                

In-nul-la-zee-na-aa-ma-noo-wa-aa-may-loos-suaa-lay-haa-tay                                          La-hoom-jun-naa-toon-tuj-ree-min-tuh-tay-hul-un-haa-r                                                      Zaa-lay-kul-fao-zool-ka-bee-r.

Certainly those who believed and practiced proper acts                                              For them are gardens beneath which rivers flow.                                                        That is the greatest triumph.

  • عَمِلُوا — Aa-may-loo(s) — Practiced (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Acted; carried out; did; kept up; followed; led; lived out; performed; practiced; pursued; persisted in; strived. The Holy Qor-aan has used both verbs  اٰمَنُوۡا  and  عَمِلُوا  in the past tense but many authors inaccurately translated them in the present tense or as noun [O ye who believe; one author as ‘Believers’] as shown in Note 002:026c  )
  • الصّٰلِحٰتِ — Sua-lay-haa-tay — Proper acts (= n., pl., Appropriate, befitting, correct, decent, fit, good, holy, honorable, moral, pious, proper, respectable, right righteous, upright, virtuous or worthy acts, activities, deeds, manners, operations, practices, performances, pursuits or righteousness or works. Righteous actions which are appropriate in manner, time and place — not the likes of a soldier who stands up for a prayer during a sword-fighting battle for life and death)

However, M Zafrulla Khan treated both the words الۡعَرۡشِ and الۡمَجِيۡدُ as two independent nouns and translated them as “The Lord of the Throne, the Lord of Honour.” The quote is as in the original; it used the spellings of British English and not of the American English.

People Of the Pits

The 085:001 starts with God’s names and conveys the eternal message that those who hurt the Believers will be punished even though they can’t see it today with naked eye. They can repent truly to make amends because the Almighty is All-Forgiving, All-Loving – 085:015. Otherwise all worldly control, power or kingship (002:259) won’t save them from God’s wrath. He cites (085:002) natural elements (الۡبُرُوۡجِ Bo-rooj) of starry patterns, constellations, galaxies, mansions and spindles He made visible to us to lead us to believe in what He chose to keep invisible.

Allah swore by His creation of the Space and Stars. He chose the scene of cruelty by a few men who controlled the pits (085:006) where the fire was fed with a lot of fuel (085:006). The controllers put other human beings on stakes, burnt them alive and sat (085:006) watching (085:007) them. The victims were believers (085:009). The abomination was staged publicly to warn the others. This practice is as long as man’s history. Abraham was set up for that but God saved him. Pharaohs did that. Jews did it to the Christians. Christian crusades did that to the others. Moslems were fore-warned but they still practiced it. They burn their opponents even today. One of the significance of this Soorah is that it has prepared all future believers in advance. Those violated are consoled that His Seizure Is Strong And Very Severe (085:013). Those committing the atrocity have been put on a very clear notice of their total ruin (085:005). Forever all have been told of the divine scheme of things though some men do not understand. He knows the reasons why He planned that way and told man to wait (086:016 to 018). After all He Is The Doer Of What He Intends (085:016).

085:004 states the ‘witness’ شَاهِدٍ and the ‘witnessed’ مَشۡهُوۡدٍ although some translations have extrapolated them to mean differently. For example, Allamah Nooruddin referred شَاهِدٍ to the Holy Prophet s.a.w and مَشۡهُوۡدٍ to his community. And Dr Al-Hilali and Dr Khan referred شَاهِدٍ to the “Witnessing day, the Friday’ and مَشۡهُوۡدٍ to the “Witnessed Day, i.e. the day of Arafah (Hujj) the ninth of Dhul-Hijjah.”

085:005 shows that those who victimized ( اَصۡحٰبُ الۡاُخۡدُوۡدِ , us-haa-bool-ookh-dood) were ruined. A translation referred this phrass to a long story of a ‘Boy and a King’ and unfortunately tried to belittle the divinity of the message to the triviality of a fable.

085:009 provides the reason why the controllers, persecutors, patrons and spectators sat watching the brutalization. They disliked, hated and ill-treated by burning the victims alive for no fault except that they had believed in the Almighty.

The Almighty God concludes the lesson relative to the People of Pits as follows.
1. He tells all that everything belongs to Him and He witnesses everything (085:010).
2. He warns the persecutors of the believers with dire consequences (085:010).
3. He promises the Believers the Paradise as the best reward (085:010).
4. He reiterates that His Catching is indeed very severe (085:013).
5. He is the Doer Of What He Intends (085:016). He will surround the People of Pits all around (085:021) so they can’t escape the punishment for having wronged the Believers.

Prayer to protect from evil

The 113:001 starts with God’s names and urges man to seek His protection from evil of all kinds. He made everything and can unmake it. He tears apart things when He wills. He can protect from all evil in His creation — in the dark, in the planners and plotters, in the works of jealousy.

113:002 directs to pray by saying قُلۡ (‘You say …’) that carries numerous connotations such as the following.
1. It commands a reader to deliver the message to all other persons in the whole wide world.
2. It orders him to tell himself too so that his telling only others is not an act of hypocrisy.
3. It directs the reader to acknowledge that he has received the message he gives others.
4. It mandates him to express his state of mind with the resolves like “I will do that.”

113:002 further exhorts to seek the protection of God of Cleaving (ٱلۡفَلَقِ, faluque) that among other things means as follows.
1. To cause something to burst open like the dawn or daybreak tears apart a night.
2. To cause the appearance, emergence and prevailing of the truth.
3. To split especially along a plane of natural weakness.
4. To broaden the depth of the request by seeking ‘protection from all evil ‘out there’ by ‘tearing it apart’ and ‘cleaving’ it.

113:003 elaborates the sphere of Evil. Man knows certain evils such as ‘mischief, bad things created as a test, set back, speed bump or stumbling block albeit temporary.’ But he can’t know ‘all that (مَا , maa) whatever, whenever and wherever’ that lies in all that He has created (خَلَقَ, kha-la-qua), brought into being, designed, fashioned or structured. Narrow meanings are conveyed by translating the prayer to ‘Seek protection from the evil He created.’ But very broad meanings appear in translations to “Seek protection from the evil of whatever He created.’ The broader meanings are obviously justified by the fact that God Almighty created everything and nothing really is inherently evil but its misuse or abuse by man is that makes it bad. Just as the Almighty’s blessings, forgiveness, grace, kindness and mercy have no bounds, man’s prayer like all prayers should be as broad as possible.

113:004 quotes one environment that breeds all kinds of evil for Man regardless of his color, creed or culture. Evil thrives in darkness, particularly when it has (وَقَبَ, wa-qub) become thick and is intensified into pitch dark, overspread with the thickness similar to what appears when the full moon has entered a total eclipse.

113:005 enumerates the evil of the blowers (ٱلنَّفَّـٰثَـٰتِ, nuf-fus-saa-tay) in the knots. Their kinds can be the breathers, the conjurers and evil whisperers who try to deter or obstruct good pursuits, the practitioners of secret arts and malignant methods, the promoters who join hands in witchcraft or the witches who cast evil suggestions. Their overt acts can be entering (لۡعُقَدِ, oqud) accords, agreements, compacts, pacts, pledges, resolutions, solutions and settlements which are agreed upon and firmed up between parties like in one or all of the following scenarios.
1. The age-old custom of concluding a solemn affirmation by blowing into hands.
2. The final step in the process of firming up an agreement, compact or mutual relationship.
3. The removal of complications which may have hitherto hindered finalizing a settlement.
4. The opening the knots that were tied up earlier.

113:006 specifies the evil of a jealous person when he perpetrates jealousy (حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ ). It is a fact of life we all experience, all the time, in all places. There have been in the past and there will always be in the future innumerable types of prejudices. Burning alive on the flaming fire for flouting established religion (085:005) may be just in the past. Protection from the evils of all kinds of biases and jealousy is as important today as in days gone by. Examples of this harsh reality abound all political, fiscal, social, professional or clerical arenas. In the world of today 2015 AD the most prominent may be have’s, have-nots and color-prejudices. Not at all is uncommon phenomenon to see the real impact of the evils of jealousy, grudge and biases. Ask the victim when an act of jealousy inflicted on him a harm or committed a crime against him.
 Ask a religious minority member in Pakistan or ISIS-controlled Iraq.
 Ask a ghetto resident who can’t improve his housing in many rich countries.
 Ask a black unemployable person in several places because he never got training.
 Ask a convict who lived a dozen years on death-row until DNA proved his innocence.
 Ask a poor who must feed his family in less than his rich neighbor spends in his dinner.
 Ask a child who attends integrated school hungry as his rich seatmate eats lavish lunch.
 Ask hundreds of first-responders battling cancer as Congress won’t fund insurance.
 Ask thousands of dependents of the innocent killed in World Trade Center on 9/11.
 Ask hundreds of thousands of dependents of Iraqis killed by oil-hungry foreigners.
 Ask millions of victims of religious and ethnic prejudices everywhere in the world.
The reasons go on and on why God taught to seek protection against the perpetrators of jealousy.

15. And it is not packed with the idle talk

16. Surely they plot a plan
17. But I too have a plan

The Holy Qor-aan                                        086:008                       ○  يَّخۡرُجُ مِنۡۢ بَيۡنِ الصُّلۡبِ وَالتَّرَآٮِٕبِ ؕ‏

               Yukh-ro-jo-mim-bai-nis-sool-bay-wut-ta-raa-ib

               That comes out from between the loins and the ribs

  • يَّخۡرُجُ — Yukh-ro-jo — Comes out (= Brought, bursts, emits, flows, issues or spills out.  Emerges.  Emits.  Exits.  Grows.  Is produced.  Proceeds)
  • مِنۡ — Min…(m) — From (= Among, from or out of a class, category, count or kind)
  • بَيۡنِ — Bai-n…(is) — Among (= Between; betwixt. Also ahead, facing or in front of)
  • الصُّلۡبِ — Sool-bay — Loins (= Back. Backbone. Spine)
  • وَ — Wa…(ut) — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • التَّرَآٮِٕبِ — Ta-raa-ib — The ribs (= Breast bones. Protective cage of bones around lungs.  The above three words a/t/a “result of the conjunction of sexual area of a man and sexual area of a woman” – Ahmed Zidan

The Holy Qor-aan                                        086:009                                     ○ اِنَّهٗ عَلٰى رَجۡعِهٖ لَقَادِرٌ ؕ‏

                In-na-hoo-alaa-ruj-ai-he-la-qaa-dir

               He most certainly has the power to return him to life

  • اِنَّ — In-na — Certainly * (= Absolutely; definitely; doubtlessly; earnestly; indeed; positively; really; seriously; surely; truly; verily)
  • هٗ — Hoo — He (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to the ‘Creator’ Almighty Allah)
  • عَلٰى — Alaa — On (= Above; against; before; for; on top of; over; upon)
  • رَجۡعِ — Ruj-ai — Return (= Bring back; restore; reversal. God Who created man the first time in above manner is able to give him life again. Translations vary between ‘returning him to life’ that is physical or spiritual or both physical and spiritual)
  • هٖ — He — That (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to ‘the man’ created)
  • لَ — La — Certainly * (= Absolutely; definitely; doubtlessly; earnestly; indeed; in all seriousness; in all sincerity; positively; really; surely; truly; verily)
  • قَادِرٌ — Qaa-dir — Has the power (= Able. Capable of. Controller. Has the power)

                Yao-ma-toob-lus-sa-raa-ero

               That day the secrets will be divulged

  • يَوۡمَ — Yao-ma — Day (= s., A period, term or time that ends; juncture)
  • تُبۡلَى — Toob-l…(us) — Divulged (= Disclosed. Exposed. Revealed. Let out. Searched. Tested by being brought out. Tried)
  • السَّرَآٮِٕرُ — Sa-raa-ero — Secrets (= Thoughts buried deep down a person’s consciences. Consciences will be searched to determine intentions. Ideas concealed, hidden and pushed under the rug. A/t/a “All the secrets, deeds, prayers, fasting will be examined as to their truth”)

               Fa-maa-la-hoo-min-qoo-wa-tin-wa-laa-naa-ser

               He then will have no strength and no helper

  • فَ — Fa — Then (= Consequently; as a result; so; then; thus; therefore; yet)
